Dave Sim was often extremely generous to various charities, paid his bills on time, and loaned thousands of dollars to friends and strangers. He paid me very high rates for a minor contribution to Cerebus in the 1980's at a time when I desperately needed the money. It would be another 20 years before any publisher again paid me so well for comparable work.
I disagree with all of his religious views and his views on women (OK, his views on just about everything), but he's no pariah, not even if he thinks he's a pariah.
c
Agreed (on EVERYTHING you wrote).
He certainly doesn't meet the definition - at least to me. Despite many differences of opinion on many things, he meant too much to me personally and professionally, to treat him like he doesn't exist. I don't want to be his roommate; and probably not a close neighbor. But if I ran into him today, I'd be happy to see him - and he's always been good to break bread with.
Rick is way off on the other end of that scale.

Given some of the publishers, associate publishers and editors I've worked for, I've managed to pick up enough "cockroach" over the years to confirm that, yes.
As long as you get the clicky accent right.

Yeah, Dave is someone I don't seek out, but I wouldn't flee from him if I saw him again. Haven't even been within 500 miles of him in years.
I'd skip dinner, though. Can't deal with the Islamic preaching, but each to their own.
Rick reminds me of this incredibly creepy guy who approaches me about attending some convention he runs every time he sees me. He is unbelievably insulting and rude. A couple of years ago, he declared that he would like to have me at his show, but I just wasn't a "big enough name".
You know, if that's the case, why announce this to me? Why not, you know, just not mention it at all?
So, this year at a show, he strolls up to me and says "It's finally time! You are going to be our guest! You have made it!" and then lets me know I rate enough to be at his show. Like being Artist in Residence at the Smithsonian wasn't higher on my list of cool things to accomplish.
He then tells me all about how wonderful the show is, and at that moment, spies the name plaque of someone a lot more important than me: Mr All That and a Bag of Chips. An idea forms in his febrile little mind. Why, perhaps Mr Convention Organizer can score brownie points with the little woman by claiming a close, personal and professional connection to Mr All That and a Bag of Chips!
Mr Convention Organizer says his show is wonderful and to prove it, all I have to do is ask for references. Gee little woman, do you know Mr All That and a Bag of Chips? Mr. All That and A Bag of Chips was an important prior guest and will tell me all about being at his show, how great it is, how wonderful they treat their guests, and what buddies Mr. All That and Convention Organizer are.
Oh, really?
Funny. Mr. All That and a Bag of Chips never mentioned Mr Convention Organizer before, and I oughta know, I have been dating Mr All That for about a year.
So, later I ask him, "Sweetie, do you know Mr Convention Organizer?" and Sweetie Mr All That says, "Who?"

Oh, good God! I know I'd read this when I was websurfing for factual data on the course of events back in January, but really! I'd forgotten the idiocy of this response!
Rick Olney on Johanna's blog to Paula of Ghostbusters--
Paula,
I’ve apologized to you regarding your feelings of anxiety over the cancelled event.
I’m also sorry that you chose to air this in public, as it is the last place to seek any balanced and honest exchange. Ms. Draper- Carlson has an agenda that is based upon hate. All anyone need do is read back and research her previous commentaries regarding myself, Ms. Garcia Bourgeoise, or anyone not carrying a “Vote for Johanna!” campaign sign…to learn her motive.
But I do understand. Unfortuntely, like the turn of events that caused your ripple of faith, I have nothing to add that will take away your pain. Just as I’m sure that your “fans” and followers were also dismayed at the cancelled event, but do you honestly think any of them would’ve set their parents aside, with one of them dying…to come meet you in person? I don’t.
I wasn’t coming back here. I done the best thing I could possibly do for my friends and readers; Sharing the vile nature of ugly people that take weak human moments to bully others is just as much a service to society.
Paula mentions the personal & professional hardship his cancellation-without-informing-them-on-time caused her & her colleagues, and he calls it her "feelings of anxiety over the cancelled event"!
Feelings of anxiety?!?
And in that condescending "There, there, little girl" tone that he uses to women who have "gotten his number" (after all, you've seen how many times he's tried to play it on me -- LOSER!).
And then he talks of her "fans" (and what's up with the quotes around that? either they are or they aren't) and followers who were inconvenienced by the cancellation. That it was just an unfortunate occurance, no big deal.
I think that although Paula was aware of that effect of the cancellation, she was actually speaking of the disruption of her and her colleagues lives by the cancellation: they made plans, turned down other appearances (ie, MONEY), arranged their lives for him, and he returned this with a brush off. Like "It's no big deal. You're my pals. Surely you understand I didn't want to see my friends so close to my mom's death! Gee, I'm sorry, don't get mad at me. It happens to everyone. Yeah, okay, so I didn't tell you right away, but so what? My mom died!"
And as far as I can tell, that attitude remains. It's his world. We're all just markers for him to move around. We have no other life, no other attitude, no other outlook than what he designates for us. "You there, Tim! - you're an okay cartoonist, but you're much more valuable to the world as my flunky and bufferzone! Forget about the stuff your ex was doing to your kids - they don't like me, so they don't count (actually, I don't believe they exist, and a little nose twitting isn't abuse anyway). And if you quit my orbit, your artistic abilities both graphic & verbal will shrivel up and die." "Hey, Gail! I gave you your BIG BREAK on the comic book convention circuit and you should remember my insight and foresight with awe and appreciation! YOU OWE ME for digging you out of your Oregon backwater and putting you in front of the fans! I MADE YOU, TOKEN-GIRL!"
(My apologies to DocA & Gail.)

Just a slight correction to keep the truth in focus here.
To date, since my heart attack in 2004, I have had to cancel two Mighty Mini-Con’s in 2004 and 2006 and a horror event originally billed as “The Spooky” (2003) and that has since been turned into an upstate horror attraction.
No, there was supposed to be 2 MMCs in 2004, one to replace the first postponement. The Spooky was canceled in 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2006. Remember those guests that were still listed on the MMC site a few weeks ago? It was his intention to get them to the 2006 con in hopes of signing them up for the Spooky that year.
So it's an 'upstate horror attraction'? What's he doing, giving a PowerPoint presentation of his nuclear meltdowns? Last nite was pretty horrific.
Since 1996, I have had 5 properious Mighty Minicon’s and a ORCon ‘96. I’ve also, with the help of members of Organized Readers of Comics Associated (ORCA), (since 1993) have held local monthly meetings in a formal library setting to encourage fandom and younger reader participation backed by parental support.
Let's get the math lined up here:
A con in 2005 + a con in 2003 = 2. 5 'prosperious' cons - 2 accounted for = 3. Which means between 1996 and 2002 he held 3 MMCs.
Even granting him his 'special' math abilities (Sesame Street wasn't on the morning he wrote that), that's one every other year. Not even enough to call it 'annual'.
When I met him in 2000, there hadn't been a monthly meeting of ORCA in quite some time according to his tales of woe. By 2003, he was embroiled in -- wait for it -- legal wranglings over the ORCA site and its contents with the owner of the site, and ORCA was the stuff of reminiscing. He was, in fact, posting regularly at the SPA trying to get ideas for getting comics back in libraries. Doesn't sound much like 'monthly meeting' to me.
This last Mighty Minicon was cancelled after we experienced two deaths in our immediate family. Nobody has been cheated in any way. Anyone that has anything else to add is welcomed to drag your tired old agenda over to my message board for as long as it takes the community there to give you a shot of reality.
This highlight is important. Didn't he recently claim somewhere there were 3 deaths that caused the cancellation of the MMC in 2006? Sorry, Moby, you can't claim a death that occurred after the cancellation as a reason for the cancellation.
Gotta love that last part: 'drag your tired old agenda over to message board'. Yeah, please, bring your questions to my backyard so I can lock the gate and throw crabapples at you from behind the fence! Mooooooooooooooooom! They're picking on me again!
Johanna, I really don’t know you personally. Nor do I care to, after reading this malicious tripe. I’m aware of your reviews and have actually supported you in a positive light online, in person, and in print previously. That ceased today for all intents and purposes. You appear to suffer from a small malady involving your opinion. But that’s okay, because this too shall pass.
Remember, this took place a full 2 months before this thread started. None of us had anything to do with the 'malicious tripe' there.
Oh, and I don't remember him once supporting Johanna anywhere; not in conversation, not in emails, not on the MMC forums.
Doesn't look like much has passed. Explains the constipation he still suffers from.

ABOUT THIS BANNING.
Yes, it IS against my normal principles.
But the only other guy I actually seriously considered banning was considered for racist comments LESS TOXIC THAN RICK's.
I don't care what he says about me, I think that's obvious. I find it hilarious that a guy who looks like Rick chooses to insult ANYONE's appearance. Simply put...who would trade? I mean, oh, my god, who would WANT to be Rick?
But the gay-bashing, the racist insults, and the disturbing sex problems Rick has that he seemed to transfer to the women here got to be way too much. No one else at CBR would ever, ever be allowed to pull this shit, and I don't think the fact that he's a serial deadbeat should give him special rights in that arena.
So after talking with Jonah, who had come to the same conclusion but was kind enough to let yabs keep its autonomy, it's time to throw the bad fruit OUT.
If he can get his act together a little bit, drop the racist and gay-bashing comments AND the freakishly sad sexual comments, then he can be reconsidered. I really don't care what he says about me, but this other stuff is really too fucking foul to look at day after day.
So it's a temp ban at the least. It's my first real banning, I think, and I admit I wish I didn't feel the need to take this step, but again, it's like we've been rewarding him for being a complete deadbeat, because no one else would've been allowed to stay and make racist, gay-bashing, weird repulsive sex comments, sub-literate or not.
I still think it's important that we continue to catch his lies, continue to provide a forum for new people he's cheated, and continue to work on the Unscrewed book and auctions.
I still think he needs to be exposed, to EVERYONE, for what he's done, in cheating so many people.
I just no longer feel I want to read his hate-crap on this thread or this board.
That's it for now, right or wrong, I think this decision was well past time.
And just as a final note...HOW FUCKING FUNNY IS THAT MARINE BULLSHIT HE TRIED TO PULL?
HAHaHahahahahahahahA!
Gail
Gail,
He has brought former adversaries together.
He has brought others together in a common purpose, to warn people that people like him are out and about.
And like an auto wreck, in a perverse way, he has been entertaining.
Of course, that does not excuse much of his boorish behavior which defies any civilized mores.
Best,
Samuel

He is:
A man of accomplishment.
A man of personal charity.
A man of honest reputation.
A man who is able to speak with those with whom he disagrees. One would be hard-pressed to label Neil Gaiman as someone he shares central political views on (at least in regard to those things Sim seems most apt to talk about), nor Mimi from Night Flight Comics - yet it wasn't that long ago that Mimi managed to put together a major event for him, and Neil's blog seems to suggest that he and Sim communicate with reasonable regularity.
I've had some business dealings with Dave -- his 24 hour comic (one which will not disabuse anyone of their beliefs on Sim's views of women) appears in a book I edited and published, 24 Hour Comics All-Stars. And there was really nothing problematic or awkward in the dealings.
There may be some people in comics who feel it would be too awkward to deal with him, but honestly that's probably true of anyone who has been in the business for at least a decade.

Thank you for the publicity, Heidi! I am sure that anyone attending the MMC this June 23rd & 24th will have a superb time! The curious and the interested should watch www.mightyminicon.com (http://www.mightyminicon.com/) for guests news and updates.
As to all the sad little people that are passing themselves off as being owed something by me here; Fear not! Your time of facing truth versus spewing lie upon lie upon lie to stroke each other… is right around the corner!
And, regarding that old list of guests — only an idiot would have made that tremendous leap in mixing up guests clearly identified (and now removed) from the 2006 convention canceled due to three deaths in my immediate family.
Again, thanks for getting the word out on how GREAT the Mighty MiniCon is going to be! I’ll throw your picture up on the homepage and give you a plug for your trouble.

Add me to the list of people that were disgusted with Olney's promotion of his comic via the tribute of a dead combat soldier.
I actually got scared while reading this thread. But it had nothing to do with Olney. A C5-A Galaxy transport flew over my house at what seemed like 100 feet with engines whining making me wonder if it was going to crash. That is exactly how he works, Danny. No problem is too small for him to use as an excuse; and every excuse is a perfectly viable 'reason' for his terminal procrastination.
But don't you dare use those excuses.
Creators are a necessary imposition; we're tools to be used and discarded at his paranoid whim. We're not even Craftsman tools that you might take care of cuz they cost a few bucks more. We're more the cheap import knock-offs he might lift from Dollar General when the cashiers ain't looking.
I've taught the Things there's a difference between 'excuses' and 'reasons': 'excuses' are what you blame the situation on; 'reasons' are the real explanation why.
Excuses are a dodge.
Reasons take responsibility.

Oh, good God! I know I'd read this when I was websurfing for factual data on the course of events back in January, but really! I'd forgotten the idiocy of this response!
The man is, was, and (alas) always will be, deluded.
All true, and again I add, he BEGGED me to agree to attend his next con.
But by that point he'd proven himself to be such a disgusting lying deadbeat that I never wanted to read his name again, let alone show up in his stinky vicinity.

I will add that saying 'prosperous' convention is a huge stretch, as he pleaded abject poverty over the shitty attendance at the one I was invited to as part of the reason why he was way too broke to keep his word on reimbursement.
So either he was lying THEN or he's lying NOW.
Knowing Rick, I'm sure it was both.

I, too, feel a little uncomfortable having Dave sim mentioned in the same breath as Olney. Dave is a man who had been diagnosed with schizophrenia but has since decried and denied the accuracy of the diagnosis. Whether he actually is mentally ill, merely eccentric, or wiser than the rest of us is , I suppose, open to conjecture.
But beyond telling some people (women) that they're basically evil due to the design of their form at birth, and advising other people (men) that they're blind and deluded if they don't agree with him, he seems to be a well intended guy who tries to add something positive to the world (and often succeeds).
Yeah, he's quirky, and some of his opinions might be looked on as hate speech if it weren't for the fact that he seems to spout them without malice. I guess I'm trying to say that the guy is complex and a mass of contradictions, but it's only what he says that sometimes merits condemnation. His actions, in and of themselves, really can't reach any threshold of immoral. The person he's being compared to doesn't merit the same consideration as he doesn't have the redeeming characteristics that Sim embodies.

Though I am not a fan of Sim's work - I've really tried with Cerebus, several times, but I could never get into it - and I'm certainly not a fan of his... shall we say... unique viewpoint, the guy is certainly talented and intelligent. Olney is neither.
Hell, they don't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence. Same paragraph. Page. Anything.

Didn't someone far smarter than I once say that a person's psyche will reveal itself in everything they do?
Look at the name of Rick Olney's world-famous convention : Mighty Mini-Con.
Now, no armchair psychiatrist am I! But it's interesting to conjecture what Olney might be hinting at with this name, isn't it?
Mighty Mini: this could very easily be a phallus reference. His belief in it's "mightyness" (look at all the horrible things he's said about women, trying to lord his "power" over them), despite the fact that it's probably really rather "mini" (i.e. small, and probably not working too well).
And then there's this: Con. One defininion of this is "to swindle; trick." Isn't that just perfect, for someone has has TRIED and now FAILED to swindle and trick so many incredible creative people?
Mighty Mini-Con, indeed!

I can't and won't argue that it's not hate speech. You're right and it is. I'm just saying that when someone is diagnosed as mentally ill I take their ramblings less seriously than I otherwise might, especially if I don't see tham taking harmful actions towards others. My feeling, which I know he'd scoff at (he gives no creedence to feelings), is that his thinking process is warped and he's not capable of fully understanding that it is so, or how it's so. Mental illness doesn't warrant a free pass, but for me it merits some understanding.

I pity (now wait) Rick as here he may have had potential back in his younger days (and several times since) to become somewhat of a force for comics but instead he turned into this pathedic creature who has become a blight onto comics. I don't know if Sam is actually apologizing or making excuses for Olney, so much as he's trying to point out that Olney is trying to build plausable deniability into his deceptions. Correct me if I'm wrong, Sam.
My sense is that Olney was very deliberately trying to decieve everyone into thinking one thing while chuckling to himself that he didn't actually have to say the lie. I imagine he was upset to be busted so thoroughly and quickly (good work there), and then tried to shift into nyeh nyeh mode but nobody was willing to buy it.
But I could be wrong.

Well, if you are, then that makes two of us. Clearly the intent was to make everyone THINK that he was in the picture, althought I tend to suspect that he almost WANTED to be busted, so that he COULD pull his "Nyah-nyahs". (Don't think about it...)
That way, if NO ONE called him on it he could say, "see? I toldja so!", and if someone called him a liar he could say, "I never SAID I was in there...! See, you're all just picking on me!"
...Or an I giving him credit for too much cleverness...?

The rumors are true.
ORGANIZED READERS of COMICS ASSOCIATED, better known (*and feared) in the comic book entertainment industry as ORCA, is resurfacing!
Turning back the hands of time during the late 1980s, you'll struggle to find any effort to congiel fans and readers. Not to mention the focus that ORCA members and supporters placed on READING comics then. This was accomplished via ORCA's Fresh newsletter mailed to countless numbers of industry talents, publishers, fans, retailers, and distribution companies. Later, in the late 1990s, Fresh was sent to both elementary and high schools, along with being sent to selected public libraries across America to encourage reading, and reading of comic books, by youngsters.
Previous issues of Fresh covered the various changes and features taking place, and it was done without leaving a single reader behind.
Fresh also didn't skip over or turn away from the small press and indy publishing area of the comics industry. Don't believe me -- Just look at some of these faces, as they guest attended theMighty MiniCon (http://www.mightyminicon.com/) in 2003:
We don't expect you to actually know any of those people pictured above, but back in 2003, ORCA gave each of them an opportunity to showcase their creative works because, as an organization ... we believe in things like free creativity and imagination. And, while ORCA no longer hosts the Mighty MiniCon, its host replacement company, TightLip Entertainment, still offers interested small press and indy self- publishers a free table at its hosted events. Folks, you can't beat that with a stick.
That's it. No smoke-n-mirrors, no wizard behind a curtain. You can watch ORCA grow over the course of this year here (http://www.orcafresh.org/).
Now -- I know that you're each dying to know why certain aspects of the comic book entertainment industry hate ORCA. So look into the eyes of creativity and chuckle at their fear.

What is Rick thinking Orca is now ? A Rock Band thats returning ala the Police ? Or Guns n Roses resurfacing to huge acclaim in an industry. I'm sorry Rick , but G'n'R tops you with this as their latest single apparntly has started kicking ass. I'd rather read this as news.
• Guns N' Roses makes their first appearance on a singles chart since 1999 as "Better" debuts on Active Rock at No. 39. The track was leaked via the Internet two weeks ago and was among four demos that made their way onto the airwaves in early 2006, only to be quickly pulled because of legalities. One of those four demos, "I.R.S.," briefly appeared on some of rock audience charts in February 2006, but didn't make our main detections-based radio charts. The last time Guns N' Roses appeared on a radio chart was in 1999 with "Oh My God" from the "End of Days" soundtrack. The single went to No. 27 on Active Rock, No. 26 on Mainstream Rock and No. 22 on Heritage Rock ... "Better" is of course from the upcoming "Chinese Democracy" album. Though the set was pushed back again from its March 6 release date, a recent update on the band's official Web site states that it has finished recording and is now mixing the album.

PRESS RELEASE
With the landmark series, The SANDMAN, Vertigo Comics and Neil Gaiman introduced the world to Dream and his brothers and sisters. The family of immortals were known as the Endless. In a partnering of DC Comics and TightLip Comics, there will be the publishing of a series based on the relatively unknown family members of the Endless for a whole new generation.
Written by Rick Olney and illustated by TBA, the new regular series will be published as The Endless: THREATS and LIES
In the story, Daniel is back and on a mission to reunite with his less-popular brothers and sisters. It has been many years since he has spoken with them, but because of the efforts of an entity known as Yabs, the spirit of justice and retribution, he will force them into the light... willingly or not.
Over the course of the series, readers will come to know the missing kin of Daniel. Each issue will highlight the unveiling of a new family member, including: Debt, Delusion, Depravity, Denial, Duplicity, and Desperation in the first six-issue arc.
Asked to comment on the re-emergence of a concept he created, Neil Gaiman had this to say: "Wot?"

He may have an arguement with Axl then. Because G'n'R are plotting out a World Tour thats starting in Japan in April. They have 5 dates lined up there and then go to South Africa in May to do...the don't laugh...My Coke Fest.

GNR may be touring, but I think the line-up is constantly changing. IIRC, guitar wunderkind, Buckethead, was part of the line-up when Robin was, too. Also, Finck is in the NIN tourfilm, Beside You In Time, just released on DVD about a week ago, of NIN's latest tour for the album, With Teeth.

Robin also toured last year with G'n'R . Buckethead quit in 2003/2004 and was finally replaced in 2006 by Ron Thal. He joined about 2 weeks before the NYC warm up shows.

Gonna take more then that Danny boy... first we have to get rid of all this Rap Crap... and the idea that "American Idol" is actually turning out the next big thing in the biz... and then the music scene will start to heal.
Personally, I suspect that "big music" will never heal.
Not to say that there aren't talented musicians out there, but too much of music today resists change. ("Change to what?" you ask... I don't know; I'm not a musician and I can't imagine it.)
30 years ago, or so, Frank Zappa talked about the impossibility of getting anything other than what people were comfortable with out into the air where people could find it and things haven't gotten any better, really.
Consider the fact that the act that you hope will "save music" (GnR) was formed over twenty years ago.
I'm just saying...
For anyone who has a couple of minutes and wants to read Zappa's "Drooling Midrange Accountants On Easter Hay" (as well as more of my ramblings on the subject) I actually wrote a short screedlet on my infrequently-updated blog. The entry can be found here (http://yankeeclipperjournal.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html).

Olney just posted several times on my message board. Apparently, he changed his ISP from the one I had previously blocked.
I deleted his messages and blocked him anew because his racist, homophobic, moronic crap is not now and has never been welcome on my board.
But I saved two of his posts for you:
And:
The only surprises would be if Olney paid his debts, apologized for his vile conduct, and went away for good.

Um...
I like Cerebus. A lot. I even subscribed after Reads and the anti-women stuff. Sorry.
I'm old enough to remember a time when Cerebus was recommended to women readers as one of the more progressive comics out there. Church & State, Melmoth, and Jaka's Story were lifechangers for me. I still remember reading the infamous "Men=Light, Women=Void" issue for the first time, and realizing he wasn't kidding. That was...a really strange, awful moment for me.
He's still one of the all-time best graphic novelists I've ever read, and I think he's going to be remembered for how influential he was as a businessman and cartoonist. He just has incredible, undeniable problems with half the human race. It's a testament to how good he is at sequential artmaking that his misogyny doesn't completely blot out his strengths as a cartoonist.

If you fondly remember The SANDMAN, you'll love The Endless: THREATS and LIES.

Kevin,
First, let met compliment you on the swiftness of your research as to where this photo came from.
I am not making an excuse for R.O. I am just calling it as it is, not what it is not. You all are entitled to your views about this incident, as I am mine. I suspect that this was a R.O. trap, I suspect being with the mindset of many here. Of course, R.O. may not be that intelligent to set such a trap.

I can honestly say, without the slightest hint of doubt, that I have only been this utterly disgusted with a single individual once before in my life, and that was with my ex after Thing 1 finally admitted she was abusing him and his sister.
The day I took Thing 1 down to the police station to have him file a report against his mother, the devotion I felt to her changed instantly from love to utter contempt. The more I talked my case over with real living, breathing attorneys, the more I discovered about her past. And the more I realized I had been fooled into caring for her. She has a record deep within the social services system, one I only discovered after 10 years of marriage.
She, too, treated everything like a game. Her insults, her negligence, her various affairs, it was all fun and games. And when it came time for court, it was just part of the play, another scene in a sick, twisted little drama.
Even when she was arrested and hauled off in handcuffs, it wasn't a serious matter. She showed complete disregard for the divorce proceedings, right down to refusing to appear until the judge was forced to order a warrant for her arrest if she didn't bother making the time in her busy 'schedule'.
She drank frequently, coming home with the trunk loaded with empties; the bedroom was 'decorated' with bottles of vodka. She did drugs with her friends at work; I found a pipe and a bag of weed stashed in bedroom where the things could easily have stumbled upon them. She stopped bathing. She became a glutton.
She hit the Things. Not the usual spanking, mind you; she struck Thing 1 till his nose bled; she left welts on Thing 2's bottom when she wouldn't sit in the tub. And worse. And more than once.
And all while I was out working to pay the utilities late at night, after I had finished my duties with the Things and meals and household chores and such.
I won't bother mentioning what I went through. Suffice to say, at the very end and for the next year, I felt a strange cross between betrayal and guilt.
That's exactly what I'm going through again.
....
Olney's a scumbag, and I'm sorry for you having to go through this again. You've had a hard life, and did not deserve this. None of this is your fault. It's not your fault Olney took advantage of you, and it's not your fault your ex was abusive and a user. People like those two delight in taking advantage of people. They're sick.
I hope Olney is forced to pay for his debts. I hope the justice system takes away everything he owns and gives it to those who need it.
But if I ever meet your ex face to face, I will beat the living daylights out of her.

I won't debate that he fucked up--he was being obviously misleading, and left a way out that was, to his inferior cognition, foolproof. I think you're right. But...
A wonderful Psychology teacher I had in high school once pointed out to the class that based on educated conclusions from certain studies done in the 1970's, people with high IQs seem vastly less prone to deceit and dishonesty than the less gifted. It's manifest in the often slower social development (NOT peaking out in high school) of those called Nerds, Geeks, etc. Rick is just stupid enough to have fooled a sizable group of what I've found to be, here, MUCH SMARTER people--into believing that he had his shit together enough (mentally and fiscally) to publish comic books, and pay them for it. When you're that stupid, know it, and resent it, the entire force of your will is directed at hurting smarter, more emotionally mature, and more talented people.

Parody ?
A lot of what I'm reading on the Comm board is how this thread will never die and the sure size of it lol. And even I said it was Olney's own doing. Thread starts to slowly ease down the page and he pulls it back up to play clown prince as usual.
I did ask 2 CBR Lawyers about things as well as another poster. But that was days ago.
I think its the size of this sucker that has people talking. Have you ever seen a near 20,000 post thread at CBR ? Had Olney not been banned we'd be crashin 25,000 at this point.
There's also people who don't even bother to check what is going on here who make posts like this:
I just don't understand how it's still going.
I would think that after three months or whatever, even a real circle-jerk would get boring. So an internet message board circle-jerk going that long boggles the mind.
I mean, what is it King of the Hill over there?
Poster 1: Yup
Poster B: Yep
Poster Alpha: Yep
Poster XII: Mmm-hmm
Repeat.
It's not like a YABS bash thread has to stop just because the person being bashed isn't around.

Some notes from Casa Isabella:
I heard from a talented inker today and he tells me that he and his penciller were screwed over by The Vile One to the tune of about a grand. He has visited the Unscrewed website and I have encouraged him to visit the YABS forum as well. I have also encouraged him to file suit against Olney.
Someone pointed out that today is my deadline for my giving an "affirmative" response to Olney's threats against me. Like that's gonna happen.
I have a policy of not responding directly to Olney because he is so utterly inconsequential to my life and well-being. I almost never say this about a human being, but he really is nothing.
Olney seems to be trying to turn "Super Hero News" - which was created to be a repository of news and press releases - into a discussion list. I don't want to follow suit, but I don't want anyone reading his posts to take even the slightest pause when he makes his impotent threats.
My Olney policy is simple:
He doesn't owe me anything. I'm in this because I want to support creators who have just claims against him and because I don't want anyone else to suffer from his monstrous business practices.
When he posts news or press releases advertising his "projects" in legitimate forums - which rules out his various masterbatory websites - I will post the appropriate warnings with a link to the Unscrewed site.
As it turns out, the TONY'S ONLINE TIPS column I'm writing for tomorrow is going to address this Olney stuff as well as some other issues. It'll probably piss off some bad people and some good people.
However, if anyone wants to interview me on the Olney stuff for their own websites, I'd be happy to oblige them. Then they can post an actual news release to Super Hero News. That will serve to answer Olney's threats in a more appropriate fashion than if I responded directly.
Or I might just post a press release to SHN after my column posts tomorrow.
I'm thinking out loud as our kitchen contractor bangs away downstairs from my office.
More later.

Gail,
He was just playing with us. He never claimed to be in the photo. Please don't fall for this petty game of his.
Of course there is enough stuff on R.O. that makes things interesting.
But he is banned, so that is it.
Best,
Samuel
Gail,
I respectfully disagree. He put this picture on this forum, asked if anyone here could recognize anyone in the photo. People assumed that he was referring to him as the one to be recognized.
With someone like with his kind of character, one never assumes.
Best,
Samuel
Kevin,
First, let met compliment you on the swiftness of your research as to where this photo came from.
As for his bed of lies, well he has to deal with it, not I. I have heard many myself.
Best,
Samuel
Sam...I have seen you do two things with frightening regularity. The first is you name drop like no one's business. Is there a comic's creator or media person you HAVEN'T met? If so, I have yet to hear about them.
Secondly, you act like a Rick Olney apologist. Rick was most definitely trying to imply he was in that photo, and he got busted. Rick is not a complex man. That is what he attempted and he failed. And we all are still laughing at the fat fuck.
Stop trying to get attention by apologizing for Rick.

I don't know if anyone hates ORCA. But we all hate you.
And no one is scared. Not. A. One.

Welcome to Earth.:D

I know it's a losing wish, but I still wish the whaleflesh would just give up with trying so hard to sound impressive. He has these favorite terms he drags out that he things are sooooooo intellectual sounding ("descriptive" anyone?) and slaps them into the wrong place.
When he talks about gathering people together in the new Orca venture (thought he was going to wait until April? is someone getting desperate?), he uses the word --- nope, sorry, it's not even that! -- the letter combination "congiel". (Never heard of a spell check, did he?) I think he means "congeal". But even that is soooooo incredibly misapplied.
Congeal: to solidify by or as if by freezing; to coagulate, jell.
Yeah, I really want to come together with friends in some sort of frozen solid mass, or stuck together like a blood clot.

I was asked to pass this along, by Chris the clockmaker.
Hi Matt
sorry for the lag in responding - been crazy busy with regular work (my
website/ebay).
Here's what I remember about the check.
It was a business check, with TightLip Enterprises as the business name
(maybe just TightLip Ent.)
it listed both Rick and Barbara Olney's name, and Barbara was the one who
signed it.
It was from Mohawk NY (Mohawk Valley maybe?)
and the most astonishing thing about the check - it did not bounce.
Unfortunately I don't remember the most useful part - the bank it was drawn
from.
I apologize I couldn't be more helpful!
I would also appreciate if you'd pass along to the forum, I haven't posted
anymore simply because I cannot keep up with how fast the forum goes. Also,
I decided I had put Rick behind me, as well as all the crapola that went
with him, and it's just psychologically more pleasant to leave that behind.
I know he's a lying, cheating, dick, I've plowed through 800+ pages of
people reiterating he's a lying, cheating, dick, and I just don't have time
to plow through the additional 400+ pages of people confirming he's a lying,
cheating, dick. However, please definitely do not hesitate to contact me if
there is anything at all is any way that I can do to help Rick get nailed to
the wall - after all, he is a lying, cheating, dick.
Do please also pass along my website info in case anyone wants a clock, LOL.
Also Matt, I want to thank you and applaud your actions in following through
to bust Rick's balls. That takes guts, initiative, and energy, and I very
much respect and admire that.

Strangely enough about Erica (who's quite the looker), was recently a guest on Howard Stern's show on Sirius Radio (which I must concede, is a wonderful thing). OK... she said she and her hubby often have parties at their home, where all the guests are sans clothing. But she got upset (near to tears) when Howard pressed her asking if that meant there were parties of another sort going on at the same time. She opened the door a little.. but didn't want anyone peeking inside, I suppose.
So is it any wonder we've got to wait until the Maury show for the results of this particular triangle!?!?

Frankly stated — You can’t. Just another LIE perpetuated by hacks and yellow journalists looking to keep their edge by causing train wrecks where none exist. This blog could grow beautiful flowers, Johanna … it simply reeks of spread manure.
Look, I’m not counting on anyone that reads this blog to even KNOW a quality event run with the fan’s interests at heart. Much has been made of stories like Scott Reed. Scott Reed’s ‘win’ will be overturned and Mr. Reed will be explaining in person in a State Civil court how his –unapproved– website design’s (which my 12 year old niece could create with the Word Press program he utilized. It is simple fraud on Scott Reed’s part. Another day in court is coming!

Because my daughter Kelly, she who got smacked in the face by that softball, has made the junior varsity team at her high school.
This is major for her and us. Though Kelly excels at volleyball and softball, she didn't make those teams, much to the bafflement of those who saw her play in middle school. Medina's funny that way. It's almost like you need to know the secret handshake for your kid to make a team.

And I see he took Mini Con blog down...but left it up on Myspace. He posts the thing about being more of a pariah than Dave Sim...and Sim doesn't even mention him. That is how inconsequential Rick Olney is. An annoying flea is all.
Rick Olney: Moronic Megalomaniac. Sim, even with arguably being a Paranoid Schizophrenic, is a man of accomplishment, and from the accounts of an ex-gal-pal I know of his from the 'eighties, he's VERY extremely bright, but with schizophrenia-related anger management issues. One of my best friends is a medicinally-regulated schizophrenic, and from that experience, they are work-ethic oriented, obsessive DOERS, not just TALKERS. Rick is a different flavor, a sociopath, whose entire life focus is attempting to get others to do things for him for free, so that he may feel superior to much better, nicer, smarter, more talented people. It's not a game, it's his life's work, and the only way the mouth-breather can feel accomplished.
I don't know if anyone hates ORCA. But we all hate you.
I don't hate anybody, especially emotionally-stunted imbeciles like Olney. He's like a bad child who's a sociopathic bully, and should be treated like one. Truly morally incapacitated children with poor impulse control should be punished, or taken in for treatment--or made to pay for their crimes. I'd rather he grow from this than just die. Not that I think he will--there's the counterbalance that we need to make sure that he's rendered unable to perpetrate his immature behavior and dishonesty on other folks, since he has no conscience.
"Never hate your enemies--it clouds your judgment".--Michael Corleone, from The Godfather.
And no one is scared. Not. A. One.
No one here, for damn sure. Some might still be, somewhere, or might be again, in the future--that's why it's important to spread the word of successes you and others have fomented.
And how creative are you? The most recent things you posted were all taken from other sources. You ripped off Michael Netzer recently on Superhero News, and your sent me a Google-searched legal "warning". Notice when I sent you back MY warning of MY lawyer, you shut right up?
Quoted for accuracy.

And you dodged her? Dear goodness, why?!?
She did the dodging, actually, once she saw there was someone there. She was walking across Third Avenue on a windy, rainy day, and I was crossing the other way. She had an umbrella tilted forward, against the wind and rain, and was walking right at me. Each time I shifted to get out of her way, she shifted, coming right at me again.
The moment she saw my feet past the edge of the umbrella, she yanked it out of the way so she wouldn't smack me with it, and bam! there she was, Audrey Hepburn.
We smiled at each other and passed, like ships in the night.

First, I don't know what brought this on. I don't recall name dropping here, nor do I recall talking about comic creators or media persons that I have met here. Please distinguish from our private conversations and what I post here on the board. For your information, I have never met Gail Simone.
Secondly, I am not acting like an Olney apologist. I just call them as I see them, and we are not always going to agree. It looked like a typical Olney trap of misdirection to me. I have seen it before. You are entitled to your views and laughing at him.
Unlike R.O, I am perfectly happy not getting attention. Please stop trying to start a flame war with me. I am not your target.

I think that is pretty uncalled for, Matt.
It's pretty clear Sam is no kind of friend to Rick and he has taken him to task more than once in this thread.
It seems that Sam is more interested in presenting the facts as they are not as we analyze them. Does that invalidate the analysis? Not at all.
That in no way makes Sam an apologist for Rick.
Tom,
Of all the insults I have endured here, calling me an apologist for Rick is the topper.
I am no friend of Rick, have no desire ever to see his face again and will be quite pleased when people who have been ripped off by him get their justice.
He certainly deserves it. Admitting that I am biased against Rick, I try to be objective about situations as I have learned in the past you never know what can blindside you.
Thanks for the kind words.

Agreed. Differences of opinion are fine.
And of COURSE Rick wanted deniability on the Marine photo in case he got caught, but that doesn't AT ALL mean that he wasn't trying to convince everyone he was in that photo. He pulled the exact same crap before, AND very very similar weirdness with the photos from the Mini Shitty Con.

Seconded. Going after Dennis just make this all look like a petty witch hunt.
Yeah, I think Dennis enables Rick and that's a bad thing. But then again, honestly, you can say the same thing about Doc A when they were friends. Guilt is not always by association.
This is something I think needs to be said. We need a little less vigilante vengence here and a lot more trying to help the people hurt by Olney.
One by one the suits are being filed and cases lost. Olney is getting what he's earned in spades. Justice is coming in a big way.
The most important thing we can do now is help those in need. Picking fights is counterproductive.

I asked nicely, and got blown off. Now, the AG can ask if they want to. I want the truth of the matter. ORCA hosted the MMC which is most likely guilty of charity fraud. It sucks for Dennis, but so be it. I wasn't asking him to bash anyone. I want honest answers to honest questions.

I think here the point is, you've already mentioned the MMC, And Orca, to the AG. They can likely find out who was in charge of what, and ask them questions themselves.
You've done a great job in bringing this to light, and in supporting the Olney Orphans in their court cases.
But this seems a bit out of place, to try to cast blame or investigation on Dennis. The NY AG will probably investigate such things on their own, 'tipping' them off about Dennis being the president, which is public knowledge, is like saying 'I think he's guilty too, check him out!' which I think is a bit silly.
After all, the NY AG probably has already contacted investigators to explore the matter. Adding more work on a tip based on the fact that the guy isn't answering your questions just seems a bit odd.

In fact not having to deal with someone who is simply incapable of getting his head around the fact that other people have <gasp!> differing opinions, will be refreshing. (at least for a wee while)

The idea of it being legitimate never occurred to me until someone here (coke&comics?) pointed to Rick's Myspace page. Therein, Rick calmly and proudly admitted to theft, fraud, lying and blackmail and gave proof as well.
I understand the desire to purge the industry of the dishonest but, the fervor here almost pushed me away. Believe it or not, it was the calm and reasoned voice of Olney that brought me into the fold (I can't believe I just wrote that, but, it's true.)
We should keep our aim focused and beware the shotgun, let god sort them out, approach.

Said I'd never post again, but... I just had a trojan attack my computer (thank goodness for virus protection), and the last place I went was the orcafresh myspace blog. Don't know for sure that's where the trojan came from, but to be on the safe side I thought I'd warn everyone.

by the way, olney is counting on you guys in-fighting so he can divide and conquer.
That's sorta like the Red Skull imagining that if he can get Red Sox fans and Yankees fans arguing at each other, they won't work together when he attacks.
Except the Red Skull's smarter and better looking than Olney, and really did invent 99-cent comics.

SPEAKING Of Rick's blogs.
http://x.myspace.com/images/spacer.gifA Messy Desk is a sign of…
Category: Life (http://blog.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.viewCategory&FriendID=59528410&BlogCategoryID=12)
So I happened upon an article that I thought I identified with. It had to do with organization (http://www.insidehighered.com/views/2007/01/17/mclemee)of a person's space. So where else should such an article be mentioned but on a MYSpace blog, right?
Well, comic book writer and artist, Colleen Doran and I are birds of a feather.
According to some researchers, a messy desk may be the sign of an active and intelligent mind. High achievers often have piles of paper and book mess around their offices, but there is order amidst the chaos:
A clean desk really does signify an empty mind. "Office messiness tends to increase sharply with increasing education, increasing salary, and increasing experience," they write, based on studies that I am inclined to accept without reservation. My office and home used to be very messy, mostly because of the several 5 drawer filecabinets that were jam-packed with old correspondence, art from ORCA members, and old clippings that I gathered along the journey. There were piles and piles of paper from self publishing, and along with my comics and things... well, I never had enough space.
Here's an interesting tidbit:
I recently unearthed a letter from Andrea Main. For those not aware, Andrea was a simple 13 year old comic book reader that joined ORCA and went onto to not only write some 'dandy' columns (back in 1995-96) touching on topics like female characters sportin' basketball sized breasts to her thoughts on life as a 13 year old female comic book reader. See... back then, females with opinions didn't get as much opportunity to voice their opinions as easily as today. Without Andrea, somebody like Johanna Draper Carlson could've ended up deaf and dumb... er. http://blog.myspace.com/images/blog/smileys/laughing.gif
Anyway, I'll share some of those old letters from a variety of people (and drawings too)! You have not LIVED until you've seen Rich Vasseur's superhero crayon colored characters, back when he first signed on with ORCA. Ahh... revenge, a dish best served cold.
Hm…my office looks like all of these things, with different zones showing extreme organization, minor clutter, and friendly family photos. My clutter increases or decreases depending on my workload, but nowadays, I schedule time to deal with clutter every single day, so it doesn't get out of hand. "Messy desk owners typically, for example, have separate piles for urgent, less-urgent, and non-urgent documents."
Overall, I can't be as messy as Colleen is. She had MUCH more to say on the subject.
Ah a reference to Colleen....
Okay, with all this stuff going on about me...
I took the test! Now its your turn!
The Dante's Inferno Test has banished you to the Second Level of Hell, but don't look for "Gail Simone", Tony Isabella, Kurt Busiek, Collen Doran, Scott Shaw, Mark Waid, or other professional trolls there because they have space booked on Level 8!

Here is how you matched up against all the levels:

Ah and an ambigious threat to people wildly more talented than him. While cluttering the internet tubes with more memes.

Can't say, not going to accuse, but I went to Rick's blog, didn't pick up any nasty bug, but there WERE two new entries.
So whichever. best to catch them and cache them now than risk seeing them deleted before and real liable gets tossed out. ;)
