Well, I'd offer to share the hotel room with you (the room I always get does have an extra hide-a -bed in the couch), but not quite sure how that would go over with my wife. ;) Not sure even an NDA would protect me! :p
Hee! Wear body armor? :p
Just teasing!
But I AM, however, extremely jealous of anyone who gets the cheesecake! :(

The guy who made the custom clocks got reimbursed for some materials.
Someone else got reimbursed for sending out some kind of promo thing.
But the only payments I remember coming up on the thread were reimbursements, not actual payments for services.

Yeah, We even know Gail got some money out of him for reimbursement. The question is, did anyone get money that wasn't some form of reimbursement?

My apologiues if this was already discussed. I was just surfing around this here intarwebz looking for some places to put the Press Release. After hitting all the major places I am just trying to find some corner I have yet to see it. :)
I was going to hit Jazma since they host that F3 interview. I looked on the forums and it seems the head of Jazma has had it up to here with him as well. He posted one of Gail's messages on his forum and said this:
Unfortunately I have had dealing with Rick as well and he has stiffed me as well. I am a lifetime member of ORCA and have been promised a membership bundle each year which I have not recieved.
He promised to send me a t-shirt a few months ago and I'm still waiting.
And if asked about his promises he says yes i'll get to it but he never does.
Gail who is mentioned above he has told me is one of his best friends. It doesn't seem like it.
Rick is always making promises he has no problem with that but keeping them well he seems to have a huge problem with that part.
Richard Vasseur
to which Rick responds:
Well, Rich -- You appear angry that I removed you and those fine interviews of yours from the forums over on the MMC.
Far as your ORCA stuff, the new ORCA hasn't yet surfaced. We're still pulling it together. I assure you that you will get what you deserve via ORCA and its new website on/around April 15th.
All in all, very undignified way for a Vice President to act. You're just playing into the hands of people that could care less about the fans.
Regards,
~Rick

If Rick Olney actually sends me anything I will let everyone know here. But the chances of that happening are slim to almost non-existant. I have been waiting years now. I recieved one membership package from him in the 6 to 7 years that I have been a member. I was suppost to recieve one per year. It didn't happen. In this very forum here at Jazma he posted about 6 months ago he was sending me a t-shirt that didn't happen.
The newsletter that is suppost to come out a couple times a year in 7 years has come out twice.
He told me he would contact comic book talent and set up interviews for me to do that never happened not once.
One time he sent me an e-mail where he misspelled his own name by one letter. He hit the wrong key typing it. He went on that it was my fault I didn't notice it and correct it when I e-mailed him back. It was like it was the end of the world. It was a simple little mistake no big deal.

I can't believe that's actually his defense, but it is.
Too bad no one was snapping pictures when he put us up in a dump of a hotel, or when everyone but me left my area to go play football, or when he acted like an utter creep to the young cosplay girls, or when he repeatedly lied about payment, or when he forgot to book us a hotel and then his credit card was rejected.
Gail
This just floors me.
If somehow I convinced a big name creator like Gail to travel on her own dime to my little bodunk locale for a convention and my credit card was declined in front of said creator, I think I'd crawl under a rock and never ever dip my toe in the water of running a convention again.

It's his activist stance that kills me. The comments about people who don't care about the 'fans'. It's is SO disconnected from his reality.

It's his activist stance that kills me. The comments about people who don't care about the 'fans'. It's is SO disconnected from his reality.Yeah, but that's a consistent Olneyism; to disagree with Rick is to be against the fans or the comics or somesuch.
Here's a response I posted to such an attack on me three years back on Newsarama:
Gee, Rick, that statement might have some impact, if it weren't coming from someone who wasn't in the midst of demeaning everyone who doesn't share his views on a narrow topic, and if it weren't addressed to someone who is in San Francisco to attend one day of a comic convention (as an attendee, not as a huckster), skipping the second day to head north and lunch with the artist of the delightful Alice graphic novel, then head up to the Charles M. Schulz Museum to talk with the text writer of a new book of Charles Schulz's pre-Peanuts work, to then have dinner with the intro-writer to the book, and then drive halfway home so that he can spend most of the day with an old cartoonist he's never met before. Oh, and if I hadn't been a comics fan hanging with comics fans for decades, hadn't wandered away from more lucrative fields to focus on comics-related work, dealing with respected folks in the field, hadn't.... well, the lists goes on and on. Yes, I disagree with you about comics ratings. No, that doesn't mean that I or the people I hang with don't care about "comic books and the entertainment portion of sequential art."
Reality and Rick's view of things have some compatibility issues.

Gail, just remember for next time. If not having a good time... squarely look the camera man in the eye, flip the universally known finger of fate, and grimace. That way we'll all know your real feelings. OR.. if you don't want to be that obvious... Just cup both hands in a circle, and we'll all know you're having an "Olney of a good time".

More words from the peanut gallery.
This is actually old stuff. From 2003, on the small press creators forum.
Apologies. I posted this in the wrong forum earlier. Brent or moderator-at-large, I've edited it in the other forum.
So many people think they know what ORCA is, yet they don't.
My earliest contacts with people within the various sector of the industry date back to the 1993-1995 years. I used to trade letters and then emails with people like Steve Geppi and other people at Diamond. I would espouse my thoughts and ideas on how the comic book could be more affordable to a wider readership. I also told them of ORCA's antics at giving away free comic books to inspire reading. And, I plugged the Comics in the Classroom thoughts and ideas that I had from working with two teachers directly back then in using the comic book in their school environments.
I've been doing this for ten years now. Anyone that is curious and look at coverage like this:
http://www.orcafresh.net/Comicons/pcc/class.html (http://www.orcafresh.net/Comicons/pcc/class.html)
Please pay particular attention to the date of the above coverage, because it is two years BEFORE anything proposed by MoCCA. You'll see that it mentions CrossGen Entertainment. I put that working relationship together. On ORCA's side of it, after Bob Stronach brought his two younger sons to a local club meeting, he found himself drawn to what I was saying regarding my thoughts on innovative approaches to taking and making a comic book serve a purpose slightly different, yet just as rewarding, as being simply read and collected. Classroom teaching environments were good places to teach kids about sequential art, their imagination, and possibly realizing that they had creative energy within themselves.
I wrote to retailers. Lots of them! No doubt some thought me insane. Heck, that wouldn't be anything unique. I've had parents and other former comic book readers tell me that I'm crazy for taking the approach that I do. So then why do I do it? Simple. It serves my purpose. Anybody that really knows me knows that I'm prone to eccentric episodes now and again. That doesn't make me a bad person. Other people think I'm a wacko and an egotist. Again, even if I were -- That doesn't make me a bad person. Frankly, if you take anything away with you of me from reading this post; it would be that I realize that this industry on all levels, be it Small Press, Indy or mainstream, is in need of all the help it can get to become a better attraction for readers of all ages. ORCA was originally created and founded 10 years aback to erase the ignorance of kids looking at comic books as instant money makers. Not enough was being done to inform them that the REAL value to a comic book was what was gained from reading it!
People are petty. People in this hobby and industry are petty. Very rarely does a person or entity get credit for its efforts unless its done by the rank-n-file. A very small percentage of people treat this hobby,my hobby, like it is theirs alone to do with as they choose. I have my own approach. My friend, Jonah Weiland created Freecomicbooks.com after trading emails with me. My friends at Marvel tried that .99 cent line of comics on my suggestions. My friends at CrossGen just launched their own BRIDGES program. Does ORCA have creative ties to Free Comic Book Day? It wouldn't surprise me if Joe Fields and forces at Diamond tapped into any of that which they've seen in letters from me or read illustrated upon the face of the hobby. If ORCA giving away free comic books somehow influenced aspects of the industry to look inward and be charitable a tad in allowing new readers to find this hobby, then great! Every idea begins somewhere. Where *free comic books* are concerned, ORCA has the credit for starting the idea and the longevity distinction. So you be the judge. Common sense will be your guide.
Before I step down from my cybernetic soapbox posting here ORCA has always promoted and endorsed the various values behind Small Press and people exploring their creative energies. We are a small press friendly environment and despite what you may think of me personally... I'm a great guy. The future belongs to us, the innovative creators! It doesn't matter if we're talking about creating comic books or creating comic book clubs here, my friends.
I'll shut up now. Heh, heh...

Happy Meals come with ketchup. I despise ketchup. I've despised it since I was first given a taste of that foul, salty, mushy tomato-paste ... stuff.
I have only bad memories of trying to wipe all the ketchup off the burger when the staff refused to listen to the grumpy looking five year old who didn't want ketchup on her burger, or salt on her fries (because salt tastes like crap too).

Speaking of fun things. I am currently working on the cover to Civil Action Comics #1. I will preface this with the fact that I suck as an artist, but I think it will have some very interesting features for all. Once it is done I will post a pic of it.

He has some huevos (did I get that right? and if I did, will I be reported to Homeland Security?) I have to give him that...
I wonder if we should send a Cease and Desist order? Or if we should marvel in the idiocy of having a product, based around your own downfall, as a selling point for the show that your not going to have anyway?
Although honestly, I kind of want that glass now.

More words from the peanut gallery.
This is actually old stuff. From 2003, on the small press creators forum.
I was going to edit the stuff out that has already surfaced here but if I edited every stupid thing out.......
I work extra at a music hall, answering the phones, taking care of the mail and other stuffs. Every now and then I'll get a call or a letter from a lady in her 60's, who's absolutely CONVINCED she's best buds with one of the female singers. Not only that, but that she's helped advance the singers' career, helped with press-relations, organized group trips to see the singer live etc etc.
She'll send packages of highlighted articles where the singer appears, and claim she (the fan) is also mentioned in the article (she never is). She's sent musical notes and added her own name to them, claiming other composers have stolen her works (they haven't), and that the singer can help her in up-coming court cases. (sound familiar?)
The reason for all of this is that the woman is a failed cello-player who once met the singer somewhere and just fixed on her like a tick to a dog. And there's no getting rid of her!

This has got to be my favorite part:
Anyway, this is the last public post on this matter by me. We do have a venue for the June 23rd & 24th Mighty MiniCon event. We hope you'll bother to come check us out!
So, come check it out although there is no location listed. Just drive around New York on those days and if you see a place that looks like it might have comics, just stop on in. And since this is his last post maybe only psychics are invited, since they will know the guest list and location. By the way, I guess if having a bunch of your own comics to sell while you sit around by yourself is considered a convention then I run one every day that I am at the shop. So get ready because tomorrow will be Calliope Con # 370.

Oh sure,
I leave the shop last night and then everyone starts talking about canes, when I have a cool cane story. So I will relate it now. 2 years ago I went into an antique mall in Chicago. I walk up to this case and see one of the coolest things ever. It is the head of a cane carved to look like a demon, with rubies for its eyes. The little blurb about it says that it was the head of Anton LaVey's Cane. I was ready to buy it , but the seller could not provide any provenance, so I decided that $700 for something that might real was a little too expensive. Oh and also:
What should Calliope's Realm name their publishing imprint? Answer the question "Matt" "Doc" "Martin" or you will face CIVIL ACTION. :D

And ya also gotta love that only money orders will be accepted for prepayment on tickets for a con that's months away, eh?
You know, if I was having money problems, and had court judgments against me which I had not yet paid, and had no morals, no scruples, and no manliness, I might want people to send me a form of payment which did not require me depositing it in a bank account or other trackable account.
And you know, if that secured location doesn't actually exist, and if the convention doesn't materialize and monies spent are not refunded... I suspect that qualifies as mail fraud.

Yes, it does. And, if you keep the stub from the money order (that part that has the MO# and aaalllllllllllll the tracking info), that money CAN be traced to the person that cashed it.

RO, quite simply, is resentful of people in the industry because he himself doesn't have the talent to be a legit part of it. He can't draw, can't write, can't promote.
(He even puts quotes around 'talent', a dead giveaway-- he can't even acknowledge that they are actual talent.)
Set aside his lack of scrupules at ripping people off-- I think that he targeted this industry out of resentment. He suckers people into working with them, rips them off, and then quite gleefully vilifies them and tears into them. Vindictively, but sloppily.
Sounds like a fanboy who always wanted to get into comics, but never quite had the talent or the intelligence to go about it. A lot of people have to go through this in regards to things they love (I'd love to be any number of things, but my skills lie elsewhere), but with him, it's turned into some sick poisonous rage.

Rick, keep digging. Judges find this sort of thing hilarious. Hilarious in that "I'm going to laugh myself silly as I squash you like a cockroach under my big ol' honkin' legal gavel of justice" way.
You may have successfully played "rules lawyer" while arguing with the moderator at some message forum, but dude, we ain't playing here. We have real lawyers and real judges on the field now, and they have real Marshals and Sheriffs just itching to carry out their orders and real collection agencies just dying to bust the balls of guys like you. That dodge might work, if TLE were incorporated somewhere. It's not. It's a fictitious name (a "DBA") that's registered with his county offices as a sole proprietorship. He has no shielding. Richard L. Olney of Mohawk, NY is personally liable for everything that appears on his website, except maybe posting son his forum. But that front page is all his, and he will answer for it.

As always there will be the "challenge Jim Ritchey to a drinking contest" proceeds will go to the alcohol poisoning ward of the local hospital. ;)
And for them MMA fans out there, open cage matches in the parking lot from 12-4 each day. Two men enter, one man leaves!
And if that isn't all, there's the ever popular dunk a minority booth.

It was pretty much that way for the one con I attended for Rick. There were more people on Artist's Alley then there were attendees. And that was even before Gail got the word out. On a side note. I just found tonite (by total happenstance) a new LCS that's like ten minutes away from my home. They're originally from up in Springfield MA... but have decided to expand to little ol' CT. I couldn't tell ya how happy I was that finally there's a comics shop nearby again. (We use to have 5 in town, then the big "investment" bubble popped and they all closed down). The vendor said he's only been open at the location for two days. He DID say he was surprised at the amount of comics he's already sold there in a few days. They also stock cards of all variations.. but he said it's the comics that have been selling best. I figure I'll slowly interest him in Unscrewed! and what's going on. If anything, I'll forewarn him about ordering anything from a certain "publisher"... (now THERE'S a word that belongs in quotes).
I got a little bit o' swag (didn't have much cash on me at the time). But I will definitely return!!

To be honest... I did sell quite a few books there, and a sketch of the Wraith. So it wasn't a total loss.
If it weren't for the fact that I had freebie points to a local hotel (and obviously not the fleabag that poor Gail got stuck in. I travel for the regular job, and build up free nights at reputable hotels), it really only cost me gas to attend, and dinner the day of the con. Are you kidding?! I've already registered a booth for Mighty-Mini-Con! And I'll have lots of original graphic novels to sell with art from George Peréz (although he hasn't signed on yet... check's due anytime!), and we'll even have T-shirts to promote the event and-
My God, I can't even say that much without shaking my head and laughing. Poor, poor, Rick. I can just imagine him renting a convention center and then just walking in one day into the empty building and saying, "Hey, where is everybody?! Curse you, Gail Simone! This is all your fault!"
He won't be renting anything. He couldn't even rent a hotel room without his credit card being declined.

And i love this bit on OLNEY'S page:
Money Orders aren't as easy to track as checks. Makes it easier for teh bastard to keep money he has scammed.
OTOH - and, please, anybody, check me if I'm wrong - but isn't taking money through the mail and then not delivering the goods sort of, like, the DEFINITION of mail fraud? And isn't mail fraud a FEDERAL criminal offense?
Not that I'm suggesting anything, of course, but wouldn't it be interesting if a bunch of people bought one-day memberships by mail and then if (when) the con didn't come off, all tried to get their money back at once? (I'm hearing "The Entertainer" being played on an upright piano in the back of my head right now.) I mean, which would be worse for Rick - going to the federal pen or giving the money back?
So, whattayathink...?
Too over the top...?

And ya also gotta love that only money orders will be accepted for prepayment on tickets for a con that's months away, eh?
You know, if I was having money problems, and had court judgments against me which I had not yet paid, and had no morals, no scruples, and no manliness, I might want people to send me a form of payment which did not require me depositing it in a bank account or other trackable account.
And you know, if that secured location doesn't actually exist, and if the convention doesn't materialize and monies spent are not refunded... I suspect that qualifies as mail fraud.
But you have to give the peanut credit for paying attention to the lessons discussed here in this thread. Remember that I pointed out that vendors actually do have a legal right to specify the method of payment that will be accepted? Obviously, he took note of that, and decided on mail-order.
Not that any other convention makes that restriction..... but then, just about every other convention I know of is actually legitimate! ;)

The space was free... and I STILL shoulda demanded a refund!!
And what I had made for the books and sketch, it was covered.. and left me with 10 bucks. LOL (Rick actually supplied pizza for the con... I'm wondering what poor driver he conned out of those?)
Was that the 2003 Mini Mighty-Con, JT? I was sitting with Ian at the SPA table.

Was that the 2003 Mini Mighty-Con, JT? I was sitting with Ian at the SPA table.
The one comment I heard from almost everyone was how there were more guests than attendees at any given time.
I missed lunch that day; as did everyone on my panel because, due to meticulous planning, our discussion took place right during the pizza delivery. I had counted on making it up when the cake was cut after the auction . . .
Doc 'I Remember It Well' Absurd
No, slick... that was 2005 where the attendence sucked and everyone got pizza.
In 2003, the college cafeteria was open and guests, vendors, and whomever ate for free. That you were busy with your panel amazes me. You had to be dragged to it, remember?
Hey! You all come to the MMC in JUne and get a limited edition CBR Unscrewed glass as a keepsake! :D Glad to see you're all having fun here! Its like THE only thread in this forum with any action.
Yet more idiocy from he who is in way over his head legally.

Hey, Matt. Although I've taken ballet lessons, and Scottish Country Dancing, do you know anyone that teaches Monkey Dancing?
I can't find any listings for it anywhere, not even on the net. Well, plenty of references, but no lessons.
And I've got to ask you much more seasoned convention attenders (my 6 years at ComicCon International apparently aren't going to help), is "Monkey Dancing" a big evening activity? Because someone was recommending that I take it up.
I am getting older, and may not be as hip as some youngsters. Monkey Dancing is kind of like krunk, but with a bit more flava.
I only have 5 cons under my belt, so I am nowhere near as cool as you. Wow...to have more than 2 cons...what a dream!
good grief!
I cannot believe the fool has a lawyer. Any lawyer would be telling him to stay far, far, FAR away from the internet. . . especially after he was just ruled against.
Maybe he just saw someone in a suit and thought he was a lawyer?
Rick. . you really need an undertaker, because you are just digging yourself deeper and deeper.

You deleted a post because you think no one noticed it? And it wasn't even an offensive post?
Cripes, I don't expect everyone or anyone to comment on every single post I make, particularly not if they agree.
I might have missed it, but did you introduce yourself with your first post? I'm blanking here - but then there were some pages I zipped through kind of fast in an effort to catch up.

I'm hoping that Jonah does follow up with the cease & desist on the use of CBR as a promotional aspect on that little con site, though. Isn't it defamatory to imply that CBR has given some sort of approval to it?
Really. Not cool.

I would suspect that R.O. can not handle his alcohol, which may explain the behavior on the board the other night.
Maybe R.O. thought the court being discussed was a tennis or basketball one, and showed up there.

Too late! My Civil Lawyer already started the process. He was there in his tux, reading through the internets, and saw threats...and NAME CALLING! He has unleashed hell-hounds and arch-angels.
I tried to stop him, but he brushed me aside. "I have to do this", he cried. "Your permission is not needed. I enforce Civil Law"
