Rick and I briefly (very briefly) flirted with starting a comic convention promoter network, although it never got anywhere because (if I remember correctly) he wanted to do something on a much larger scale than I. But through the years, I heard more and more bad stories about him, more and more issues that made me happy that I never really pursued anything further.
After each time I read that one of his cons was cancelled (and it seems like in the past 3 years, not one has actually gone on) or with his failing (failed?) publishing venture, I always thought the same thing: before you start the process of organizing a show (or a publishing company) be aware that there's a good chance you're going to lose money, so don't expect to have anything afterwards to pay off your debt.
When I did my (failed) con in downtown Chicago, I was well aware that I could lose every penny I spent on advertizing, pros whose way/hotel I paid, and renting the space. You have to start off thinking that you could lose all of it.
It's only when you start to sell tables and start to get money from attendees do you start getting rid of that debt -- $75 at a time, $5 at a time.
Same goes with publishing -- you have to think that you're automatically in the red, between paying your creative people, printing, advertizing, etc, with the possiblity of never recouping a penny, and you have to be willing to put your money (and name) on the line.
In the end, I lost a lot of money on the 3 cons I put on, and it stung as I paid off the debt, but I'm happy to say that I owe nobody money and every show went on regardless of how much I lost.

I imagine the purpose of this thread is to vilify, demean, libel, and outright destroy my character, business, and personal life.
No, you've done that all on your own.
You know, at one time I had sympathy for you over the deaths in your family.
Now I feel sorry for your kin that have passed on. You shame them with every lie, every slimy deed, every venom-filled insult, and every deception you weave.
Every time you use those deaths as an excuse for your behavior, you shame their memory. Do you even care how they would view your actions?
Ruin your own life if you want. Stop dishonoring their deaths.

Sorry to hear they were not the success that you were hoping for.
You know, you take a chance on something, and it can go good or bad. Financially, it went bad; socially, I met a lot of great people who love comics as much as I do.
But I knew that I could lose money -- a lot of it -- and it was my money to lose. When I look at Olney's ventures, I don't see that sort of fiscal responsibility. I remember reading that he said he had to cancel one con because the money didn't come through... THE WEEK OF THE CON. That's shocking that after planning something as big as a comic book convention with dozens of guests and dealers, you'd wait for the financing just days before the show. You need to plan for that stuff weeks, if not months, in advance.

Now that's integrity. You tried, and you tried hard. Ain't no-one can fault you for that. And you went out with your obligations fulfilled.
Do you happen to know Lance 'DOC' Boucher? He's familiar with just about all the creators and promoters in Chicago, and this situation seems fairly familiar.

TC - Just because Gail doesn't ban doesn't mean someone else won't come over here and do it.Nah, he'd have to be creating havoc on multiple boards, so far he's confined himself to just here. And he's Promised to avoid this thread from now on!
Just to be clear, only the supermods have the power to ban someone. The rest of us take problem cases to the mod board and we discuss previous history, anything else that might be relevant, and reach a group concensus.
I can't recall gail ever asking for someone to be banned from this board. There's been a couple that have created problems both here and on other boards that she's not been sorry to see the back of, but the ban request came from other mods.
Gail runs a pretty free-wheeling board, and we're all the better for it. I'll occasionally reinforce the notion that CBR does have minimum standards and I have asked folks to turn it down via PM every now and then. With this crowd though that's the most I need to do, which makes a moderators' life very easy, muchas gracias!

I am continually amazed at how often those commiecon trolls like this big headed bloated oaf is drawn to the smell of shite.
I love this: "I, among many others, crossed swords with the idiot many times for quite a while over there, and he was an endless source of amusement and ridicule. Unfortunately, what he's up to now ain't so funny anymore."
You're a troll. Don't act like it was me that you were talking to back then. Because it wasn't. You trolls on the commie boards were put in your place legally. 'Course, maybe nobody told you. And -- What kind of "idiot" does it take to keep conversing, assumingly in civil discourse, over on commiecon with another thought to be "idiot"...
Anyone else find it funny and vaguely disturbing that as he gets more and more desperate and delusional, his already hideous grammar and spelling actually get WORSE?
I dare any human with half-decent English skills to try to parse the above without falling into madness. It's like the Necronomicon for deabeat liars.

Dude I understand you on this one. I've messed in this event thing - TWICE. You fly the guests in on your dime upfront. You can hope for the sales to offset it. At the end of the day everyone else gets paid first.
If you don't got it, don't send the invite. Don't hire that employee in hopes their work will produce the sales to pay them.

So Ric seemed to have snapped....wow lol .
I have to agree that publishing the work as a benefit book, as cool as it would be ...woudl be just keeping the presence of Ric's vile behavior alive.
Heres some ideas I had kicking around.
It might be fun to do an original comic about our collective misery/the insanity of Ric. Maybe print it and sell it at conventions, online etc...could be fun ?
I think the idea of a collective lawsuit would be great, everyoen that was screwed over by this guy band together, present our collective evidence and really teach this guy a lesson.
Also maybe we can throw a ralley/party of sorts at a bar during the NYCC ...we can all meet up drink and have a laugh together.
....Im really glad this thread exists, its beyond informative and interesting, and even entertaining.

I'd think this would be keeping Ric's presence more than doing a benefit book with the ideas many of the creators had spun in a new way as Kurt Busiek posted. This idea seems to be more " Lets get back at him personally " I feel.

Ideally, Diabolik, I would like the benefit book to be all new material, an anthology with a theme of being screwed. No mention of Troll-ney, TLE, ORCA (unless someone did a Moby Dick parody).
The best result would be a comic that not only helps the creators, but also stands on its own merits. Providing a cathartic release is just a perk.

Another way to get *some* money is through a collection agency. The small amounts they likely won't take, but if enough of you compile your invoices into one large amount owing, the agency will pay you a percentage of the full amount (which would then have to be divided up) then they'll go after Rick for the full amount.
How about one does that I'm not sure but it's another avenue to explore if some of you are interested.

I'm sure that Olney is already skilled at dodging creditors. One more wouldn't bother him.

I'll argue over all kinds of stuff, obviously, but getting paid for work I've done? God, that's depressing.

Personally I don't think anyone in Dick's family died. Or at least not those times.
Everything he says (exspecially when he's looking for a quick excuse) seems to be a lie.

I know R and he is a good guy who tried to stop the stranglehold WW had on Chicago and I applaude his efforts and hope he doesn't go away from the comic scene. R, could use you at The Jam.
He put some awesome cons together and had a great time.

'Dick', you should be ashamed of yourself. You've got people willing to cover your debts, willing to help others take the proper legal channels to recover what you owe them. And where exactly do you stand?
You've admitted to owing many many creators (Daphne calculated the total expressed since this thread started to be somewhere in the neighborhood of $17,000, not including my own). You have yet to show the slightest bit of remorse for such flagrant withholdings. What you're doing amounts to fraud on a Federal level of law.
And all you've done here is occasionally stir the sediment, call respected creators 'liars', and sling your half-baked insults like so much excrement in the monkey-house.

Sure. Their best option is probably small-claims court.
Or just cut their losses and save the grief... which is what most seem to be opting for.
The point of the idea isn't to set all things right at a stroke, but to assert control and ownership of work owned by the creators, get it into print and make some money. It's to simply go around him, rather than waste effort trying to get him to repair a breach he's obviously not going to.
Not everyone is in a position to do that -- but a lot of people apparently are.
Which is why I agree it's a worthy idea. Natural and brilliant, actually. Certainly fitting for the creators involved. They'd need someone amongst them to take the ball though... or a potential publisher to prod a little.

Well, I hate to end it this way for now -- but I can't post here anymore in this thread. 'Course, this doesn't maen that you all can't keep going oabout whatever. I imagine the purpose of this thread is to vilify, demean, libel, and outright destroy my character, business, and personal life. Fortunately, I have that all under control, or so I was told. You all take care! See you in court!
Sheesh, miss a day on this thread, miss about 20 pages of comments.
Based on above I see Rick and his imaginary "lawyer" haven't yet got around to verifying the definition of libel, slander and defamation and how it applies in a court of law. The pesky first admendment and the definition of "opinion" makes it oh so difficult and that doesn't even include the many precendents that tend to interfere with proving any of the above. Even without his vomiting of words on various forums across the net confirming the accusations against him, he wouldn't have a case but now he most definitely doesn't.
More then likely though his "lawyer" is boogieman to discourage people from trying to collect the money they are owed as its an added expense to an already difficult situation. Which leads to Mark Waid and his offer. I wouldn't mind knowing who takes him up on that and what happens as a result. Hat tip to Mark for such a generous offer.

The sad bit about seeing you here on YABS is that you've had something to do with Mr Olney.
Never mind! Come for the legal railroading, stay for the coffee and donuts!

Mister Waid, I already had tremendous respect for you as a creator.
Now I have tremendous respect for you as a person as well.
It's wonderful that a thread about someone who basically personifies everything that can be wrong about comics has so many paragons of the industry posting on it. It shows him for the abberation that he is.
In personal news, it turns out that the Olney-esque person I had dealings with is, in fact, connected to Olney.
Shock!

Well, I'm going to go off on another angle here, as the current level of go-after-ness has hit it's true stride with Sir Waid's offer (we can have Gail officially KNIGHT him later).
Tim: I know you want to do a benefit book. And I know you don't have the cash to do it on a Diamond-level.
This is the Physician - heal thyself approach that Dimestore uses for our anthology as we are building our distribution system. We also used it to finance the production and distribution of the 6 #0 issues from Small Press Idol this year.
The set up is simple: We use the Dimestore distro system online to pre-order the book, then use the $$ generated to print and ship the book. We can set up books many different ways. This includes being able to give each creator their own code to order the book designated at whatever cost we want to give them. We give 50% off cover price to cover to cretors involved in our anthology. This allows them to order as many copies as they want...then re-sell them at conventions and shows and signings they do, and that is their profit on it. So individuals can order copies, retailers can order copies, and creators can order copies, our system is tested and works.
Our payout on individual sales is set to 90% of cover price. I'd waive that, to help the benefit book turn a profit that can be further spread to the designated benefitiaries as administrated by the ICC. Basically, I'd want to make sure I cover any cost of serving as order center, which would be basically what - paypal fees from orders, and the cost of a money order to send to you the $$ collected. Dimestore works directly with SIPS POD as a printer option - buy you can pick and choose any printer for the project you wish. Depending on the sales, the printer choice can be left open until towards the end of the pre-sale period.
So I'll put that out there, as an option. We've put out real books by real creators and gotten them to real readers, and have most of the bugs worked out of our system now. Not to say we're perfect, not to say we have the clout and power of other publishing options that might buy the benefit book outright...but if you want to keep 100% of the control of how things are done where you want it, it's a solid route. It's doing well for us.

I've kept my eye on this mess ever since it appeared in Johnston's LITG, and registered especially to post this.
I've read the majority of this thread, and I am amazed at how low this Olney-character has allowed himself to sink. Maybe he meant right at the very beginning, but he just kept on ziggin' when he shoud've zagged. But also, I'm amazed at how long it took for people to take action: he's not living up to his end of an agreement, mindlessly uttering legal non-sequiturs, blurting out all sorts of manic nonsense, being a professional/social hazard to himself and others...
Of course I don't know what happened outside this thread/messageboard, but I do hope that Kurt Busiek's idea of taking the matter into your own hands, and not revert to a useless back-and-forth, by collectively shopping the (ex?)Tightlip comics to another publisher, was not just thrown to the side. A project like this helps to heal some wounds: emotionally, professionally, and perhaps to some extent financially.
And I can't praise Mark Waid enough.
Being a comic reader and somewhat of an "struggling artiste" myself it was frustrating going through the whole thread, going "Jesus Christ almighty, get your asses from behind your computer screens, grab yourselves a lawyer or contact the CBLDF and put a stop to this loon!!! AARGH!!!"... and that was only fourteen pages in, I still had some eighty pages to go, and Olney himself hadn't shown up yet to make matters even worse! But I do realise legal action costs money, maybe more than it would generate, I don't really know. And that might scare off people from taking this guy to court to settle this. It might scare 'em more than some nut calling everyone dissagreeing with him a liar and threatening them with "legal action".
And I swear, if I had enough dosh, I would do exactly the same as Waid.
"Fuck this, this guy has to pay one way or another... Trial's on me, guys! Let's rock 'n roll!"
Unfortunately, I don't. Heh.
Waid?
You rock.
I hope this means (the beginning of) the end of this.

Shades of Mark Alessi.
I remember Gail's phone calls from the road the weekend she attended Rick's show and, when recounting her tribulations here, she's being kind to the man. The crap he put her through was absolutely absurd and unconscionable, and I remember at th etime really starting to worry that the next time I saw Gail, it would be on the side of a milk carton.
Attention, all creators who have been stiffed by Olney:
if you want to file a claim against the man but can't afford the expense, I will cover you out of my own pocket. No joke. I don't care if Olney owes you ninety bucks or nine thousand, if you're willing to put together your case but reclamation costs, filing fees and professional legal consultation are standing between you and your day in court, I will personally foot those bills. Contact me and we'll work out the details. If you're one of the three people on the internet who don't know my e-mail address, contact Gail and she'll forward your correspondence.

Well, I've been a regular at comic fesitvals/expo's in the UK for the past 15 years (the past 5 of which have been more in a position as assistant than the previous 10 years worth of fanboy, although I will NEVER renounce that title) and this thread has just confirmed what I have always believed; there are a few idiots in the comics world, but they are far outweighed by the upstanding, honourable and downright likeable creators, many of which have popped up in this thread.
One thing that has stood out about this thread however is its polarity; normlly when I see threads with arguments/disagreements/questions of belief on forums there are always those few who take the side of the accused, be it in their belief he/she is correct, or that they enjoy instigating conflict.
Not Here.
There is a voice of ONE for one side, and MANY for the other.
I dont think I have EVER seen that much of a landslide since the eviction of Sezer in Big Brother UK (91.6%)
What is sad is that he doesnt seem to realise this...
maybe we should just pity him.
As a side note, at a convention a couple of years ago I was chatting to Neil Googe at a convention...He was chatting to me about a new title he was in dicussions with at DC, and asked what I knew about a certain Miss Simone...Now, I have never met you Gail (never had the pleasure), but without a seconds thought, I said "amazing, simply amazing".
Why?
1. I love your books; well written, balanced between action and pathos and downright fun.
2. You are a "name" in ther industry. Cynical I know, but EVERY artist/writer gains a boost when teamed with a good counterpart.
3. Wherever I have heard your name, it has been linked with intergrity and honesty, and with a fair hearing.
Of all 3 above points, I think the third held the most weight in my chat with Neil, and i'm guessing i'm not the only one with that opinion. It says alot about that person when they give out that appearance. At the end of the day, we all create opinions of those we meet on the net PURELY from how they act, reply and react.
I have a very high opinion of you Gail.

And Mr. Waid, that is a hell of a generous offer. Honestly I'd take it if I was someone that got robbed like this. You'd take this guy to the cleaners.
That all said, I really like Kurt's idea. You guys should get together and do a book with the material. I'd buy it and promote it as well. Who wouldn't at least look at a Gail Simone or Chuck Dixon book?
Good luck guys.

I've really got to stop paying even bemused attention to the wannabe. He really seems to believe that "all publicity is good publicity". And that the fact that folks like Gail Simone & Kurt Busiek are mentioning him must mean that he can write well. (And isn't it interesting that when he wants to make himself look good, Gail's name is worth dropping? Gosh, just as if she were something far better than the "hack" he's been calling her!)
"Worth mentioning" (and it's a really limited worth now) does not equal "quality writing". Heh.
I'll say it again, this thread will live a while longer as people vent off their frustrations. But already those injured are recovering, and looking forward. And the support, interest, and common feeling expressed in the thread are part of that. But none of the credit goes to Himself. Rather, the fact that the folks here are good quality folks.
Anyway... heh. Now he thinks he's a writer. Oh, man. Someone who can't recognize that the use of "fambly" was for intentional fun. He's got a loooooong way to go. But then... we've got plenty examples of his abuse of the language, don't we? Say, where's that rolled newspaper? That nose needs swatting again.

Only his promo copy, which is some of the dumbest, most impenetrable stuff I've ever had the displeasure to read.
When I commented on it, he tried to blame Ronee, who'd had nothing to do with it and writes a thousand times better in her sleep than Olney could channeling the ghost of Hemingway.
And I love how he's trying to convey that anyone actually is ASKING for his stuff rather than it all, every speck, being for a made-up vanity imprint where no one was actually PAID.

So Mark Waid -- How about you hire Reed to create 5 or 6 websites for you, she can afford a real lawyer!? Mark, seriously -- I am pleased that you've involved yourself in this matter. Thank you. Umm... you did talk to your attorney, right? I mean, before making such a bold statement (and whatever remarks)?
Wow...as if you need to further demonstrate having lost touch with reality...you can threaten Mr. Waid with legal action, yet "can't get into that, obviously" when pressed for what in the world you could actually sue him for...after demonstrating that you have far looser lips than any legally savvy and cautious businessman would ever have.
Tell you what...just to shut you up...I'd like to suggest that maybe the effected creators try to pick a law firm by some sort of consensus and then have them establish a fund to accept donations to pay for the services of said law firm. That way, ANYONE (wink wink, Mr. Waid) can donate privately and remain out of the fray.

Bull. All of your former employees and people you owe money to deserve such consideration.
You are not arguing from a position of power, here. Your NDAs aren't going to mean anything once it's easily proven that you violated the contract first by not paying. And that you revealed employee/employer information online yourself.
If you truly had talked to an attorney, they would have told you to stop posting about all of this and take care of it off-line.
Any judge who reads this thread (and they will), will rule against you pretty quickly.

*speculation isn't defamation, it is merely pondering out loud, or in type as it were here. Also, defamation is really hard to bring to court, since most affected by these proceedings live in the US. I refer to, of course, the 1st amendment which includes Freedom of Expression, which also includes satire, so cartoon away cartooners. I mention this in case "someone" feels a desire to bring others to trial due to libel/slander/defamation etc :)

You should just thank god you didn't go to his "con."
The first night, he put us all in a hotel so horrible that one noted comics commentator, a smoker herself, slept in her car instead. He forgot to book a room for me for the last night, and when they finally found one in the middle of the night, his credit card was rejected. They did a panel where four people were in the audience, I kid you not, and one of them was my husband. And that's just part of it. It was the Keystone Cops without the sense of dignity.

"Gail" -- I am sure that Chicago with DOC and Raph would be better for you. Yes, I forgot ... a honda may not be big enough for you. Sorry.
Yes, my card that night was rejected -- it actually topped out after paying for other transportation costs and in covering Ian Shires breakfast bill for his brood that he dragged along. Geez... a $161.00 dollars breakfast on Saturday morning!
I had nothing to do with the PANELS. That was Tim Tobolski, dear old Doc_Absurd here. Cry to him.
Far as your Saturday night room -- Dennis Kininger covered your costs. It was HIS car you rode to the Herkimer Motel in on Saturday, and his car that you rode back to Syracuse on Saturday night in.
I know that last bit, idiot. That was the car that DIDN'T stink. We've covered this several times...listen, if people around you are holding their noses (which we all were, it was the topic of much conversation) when you're around, Rick, maybe it's time to invest in some soap.
But you DID have something to do with the panels, Rick. You put together an embarrassment of a convention that no one attended.
And once again blaming Dennis? So sad, so very sad. He was very surprised by your attempt to blame him for your non-payment screwups, by the way. Classy move for one of your few remaining friends!

Here is the first part of his ad for his comic, Freedom 3:
Perhaps the most significant contribution of heroes into the popular literature of the 20th century was made by the form of graphic narrative known as comics. It is difficult to disagree with this statement, and the serious comic collector as well as just someone interested in pop culture will want to give Freedom 3 a look, as they're characters crafted from real life scenarios of this time.
During earlier times in America, propaganda was used to support American ideals of the right over wrong, good over evil scenario. Imaginary characters contributed to escapist entertainment value in a more direct and appealing way on the patriotic and positive view of the American political situation. Today those values are gone or muddied. That younger American's have imaginary characters which address and speak to them on the level is very important. That they are capable of realizing that the "good guys" can beat the "bad guys" is also important. It touches the very real notion that, in time, being unable to recognize good from evil could give evil a foothold.
Welcome to today. Where politicans take their cue to right and wrong from corporations versus from those American's that voted them into office. Where with each growing month, terrorism takes the lives of innocent human beings on a level where previously only hunger, disease, and lack of education robbed souls.
Does that not make you want to run out and buy it?

Scott:
I wasn't planning on coming back here to post, as I was told that some of what has been mentioned in this thread constitutes a legal presentation. But, contrary to any of that, I wanted to reply directly to your above post.
I sent you the last 3 emails attempting to do as I was directed to do. In short, we were trying, attempting to talk to you about the website matter. As I told you back then, your website work --contrary to your position of thinking BOTH projects were contractual and payable together -- was separate of your comics work. There were no harrassing emails. My attorney has copies of your requests and later unrealistic demands. The attorney that you hired from Ilion, New York was very understanding and fully agreed with our presentment to him regarding your 'images' not constituting your 1/2 agreed upon completed work to be paid 1/2 your agreed upon notion that pulling images and slapping them on a template somehow fulfilled YOUR creative obligation -- and YOU wrote that contract, sir! -- So I take no credit there.
Additionally, if you have hired another attorney -- We've not seen or heard from him/her. Please expedite that asap, as I have a countersuit awaiting your pleasure. Again, much of this thread is just a compilation of "Gail Simone's" negative orgasmic throes ... combined with her plebe followers (and I really mean no disrespect,) but trolls and stalkers are just that to anyone that can differentiate between the two.
I was instructed to further explain to you that your website work was not to our liking and approval based only on your (after-the-fact) presentation of the images you provided.
Additionally, you violated your non disclosure agreement, and the confidentiality clause in your contract. Yoiu you are also on that short list of talents that need to have their interactions and due bills adjudicated. Hopefully, many people here will employ you to have their future websites created. Your abilities just did not fit the image of what TightLip Entertainment was seeking for its MMC refit. Thank you.

Gail, rest assured that Rick Olney's meltdown is on its way. His pattern, so far, is IDENTICAL to those he's displayed on other message boards. But first, our stench-emitting non-publisher requires that we hit a minimum of 100 board-pages of discourse before he'll cut loose with the inevitable fireworks. It's like Rick Olney is hosting some sort of Bizarro World "March Of Nonexistent Dimes" telethon, only he's makes Jerry Lewis look like Shari Lewis by comparison.
Then he'll apologize.
Then he'll start getting cocky again.
Then he'll begin to threaten to sue people again.
Then he'll get personally abusive again.
Then he'll proclaim that "you've heard from me for the last time" again.
Then he'll chime back in with a "I'm back! Did anyone miss me?" again.
Then he'll start threatening people again.

I've been a witness to his grandstanding horseshit so many times before (Comicon.com, the Comics Journal boards, etc.), this thread is like a rerun. Except, of course, that this time a number of people are waiting for the $17,000.00 that will never come, not even in currency from Earth-Olney.
Rick, would you please do everyone a favor and cut to the chase, er, meltdown? I'm sure that Jonah Weiland would appreciate being spared the unnecessary bandwidth on CBR.
Y'know, you really don't need a lawyer as much as you need a full-service proctologist. I hear they give discounts to registered idiots like you.
Aloha,
Scott!
P.S.: Regarding Rick Olney's occupation -- and this embraces the blackest sense of humor possible -- he's supposedly a "check writer" for an insurance company. Ho ho. -- SS!
P.P.S.: And speaking of black humor...Hey, Rick, if you're SOOOOO starving for public attention, take a lesson out of poor ol' George (PENTHOUSE COMIX) Caragonne's playbook. Now THAT guy really knew how to get everyone's attention! Try it! You're guaranteed of making every funnybook news site on the Internet. But be warned; it only works ONCE. >Ker-SPLAT!< -- SS!
P.P.P.S.: I wonder if Classic Media -- the current owners of the Harvey Comics characters like Casper, Richie Rich and Spooky The Tuff Little Ghost -- ever signed off on the title TALES OF THE SPOOKY? Maybe, if he ever finds a new crop of suckers to contribute, Rick could change it to TALES OF THE SMELLY, starring himself as "horror-host". (You know, he did travel back in time to give Bill Gaines the idea for the Crypt-Keeper!) -- SS!

Ms. Beach:
I am merely behaving as anyone in my position would. Far as Mark Waid, if you or any other person professing to know the intricacies of legal matters when a lawsuit is bankrolled by a third party and the motive behind it ... be my guest in expounding. Far as my tact -- nobody here has deserved much, if any, consideration.
No, you're behaving as any irrational bullshit artist in your position would. A mature individual or competent businessman would shut the hell up.

Let's start here...this is, I swear, ACTUAL COPY from Rick promoting his vanity line of crap.
""In a world where mankind has placed self greed and material worth over morality and justice -- The entertaining values of TightLip exist to point and guide your imagination to reality." "
He honestly seems to think this is an intelligible sentence. I've seen some bad copy, but HOLY CRAP, that's hideous.
"We're a small, yet multi-faceted entertainment company, based in upstate New York that is dedicated to bringing the world of comic-book entertainment to the world beyond the present day normal. "
hahahahahaha! I mean just...OH MY GOD. hahahahahahaha!
I sure hope he is dedicated to bringing the world of comic book entertainment to the world beyond the present day normal! :)
And there's pages like this. Smartest thing he could have done was hire Ronee, but then not using her to fix this tripe is really bizarre.

Yes, my card that night was rejected -- it actually topped out after paying for other transportation costs and in covering Ian Shires breakfast bill for his brood that he dragged along. Geez... a $161.00 dollars breakfast on Saturday morning!
I am loath to reply to anything directly to Mr. Olney. My "brood" consisted of my wife, our 2 kids, a friend of our older daughter, and my mother. We paid for EVERYTHING on our own, up front, and were handed $100 in cash AFTER the show (which did not cover the travel expenses agreed upon - not that I want to revisit ANYTHING to do with the experience or to go after anything from Rick)...I have NOTHING to do with Rick's credit card rejection. I should likely not be dignifying his lie with a retort. Leave me out of this - I'm only here to make sure my name is not used in conjunction with anything you are doing.

Then he'll apologize.
Then he'll start getting cocky again.
Then he'll begin to threaten to sue people again.
Then he'll get personally abusive again.
Then he'll start threatening people again.
Et cetera, et cetera, ad infinitum, ad infinitum, ad nauseum, ad nauseum.

Yeah, Harvey for the Spooky is a lawsuit lock, but also, as Chuck Dixon pointed out, the Monster Squad comic is way, WAY too obviously close to the Monster Squad film.
Not an original idea in the bunch. But some of the creators he hired could obviously have come up with some good work, I'm sure.

You people are wasting your time by continuing to go back and forth with this guy as though you're going to get through to him and get paid. This is not Marc Alessi the millionaire; if his website is accurate about his location, this guy operates out of the shittiest in a pretty shitty string of houses on Main Street in Mohawk, NY. By all means spread your warnings about him to other pros, if you feel he's cheated you, but there's no money there or he'd be living... well, off Main Street, at least. He must hear the traffic going by all night long, his neighbors houses are so close you could jump from one roof to another... I suppose to some of you living in cities that doesn't sound so back but around here where a 2 bdrm house with a decent yard might only run you 60k, it'd be considered a poor neighborhood. I'm not trying to make Rick feel bad, I'm being pragmatic.

And we're not posting this for Reeky Rick's sake. We're sharing our experiences with each new person he's cheated, and in some cases, having a laugh. Rick showing up here is at best a side product.

You caught me before I went back and took out the part about "ridiculous" - I felt bad because like I said earlier it'd drive me nuts to have to squabble over money I was due, so I understand why people don't want to just drop it. But as Rick continues to post, it's starting to look more and more like a bunch of fairly intelligent people ganging up on someone who is not quite all there. He's nutty and poor; what more can you take from him?

Well, the "nutty" and "poor" guy is regularly threatening to sue us all, for one thing.
As I've said, I already told him to keep the money he still owes me. But I do want him to pay the others, and at the very least, this will be a reminder that he still owes all those people he lied to.

Says Slim Goodbody.
Tempted to segue this into a comment about his sadly-aspiring-to-be-a-songstress daughter...who he then commissioned to have drawn as a comic book character that is 10 times further away from looking like her than Alex Ross is from looking like Batman.
But...as much as that seems like I actually did go there...I can't really...because it isn't his daughter's fault that daddy is insane...but it is ridiculous that he tries to throw stones at people for something that not only he BUT HIS DAUGHTER have problems with (if even allowing for his insinuation to be correct).

Whatever you think best... I'll excuse myself now. Have a good day!
And then the junkie said, "well that's it for me, I'm quitting heroin now." And we didn't see him again for a good five minutes.
Can I get sued too? You've threatened my wife and friends. It seems to be what all the cool kids are doing. Can I be an orgasmic plebe or whatever you've calling people now?

I think he's just conniving and unscrupulous.

I'm just still here waiting to hear what the hell a "plebe" is supposed to be.
Oh, while I'm at it, am I being named as a party in your legal actions, Dick? I seem to recall you making some sort of veiled threat to that effect, but my attorney hasn't heard from you yet. As fun as it is to stand on the sidelines and watch you self-destruct, it would be really fun to be a participant.
I suppose I should mention that I once took on the Tournament of Roses and the City of Pasadena without a lawyer and beat them. If I can make them blink, I think I can handle you.

Maybe they can get a share of the proceeds from the sale of the dilapidated van squeezed into the front yard of his house with an hand-written sign tucked in one window on which someone has scrawled a $1500 sale price!
I just keep coming back to my original reason for posting in this thread - I can't get over the notion that someone with such limited resources and skills was ever able to get into a position where he was able to affect so many people's incomes (for better or worse). I hope some of the people in this thread will at least take away a sense that they should vet their future employers/partners a little more closely than they have.

Don't know if you're serious about the van thing but it's funny either way.
And you're right about vetting, however, people do fly under the radar for surprisingly long periods of time, unless outted in public, which, thankfully, Chuck Dixon did with Rick.
