Can't you just picture his wife having a frenzied crying fit and repeatedly slapping him in the back of the head?

"I told you! I told you to leave it alone!! You just had to piss off the internet people, didn't you?!!! It wasn't good enough to scam everyone you've ever come in contact with, huh?! You had to piss off the internet people!! Now we're getting sued and investigated for fraud!! YOU JUST HAD TO PISS OFF THE INTERNET PEOPLE!!!"

I haven't caught up with the entire thread yet... but this just reminds me so much of that West Wing episode where Toby (?) spends a day or two in futile battle against the internet people. lol

So in a couple of hours, I'm gonna be hopping a jet plane for the tropical wonderland of Pittsburgh. The hotel supposedly has wireless access, so I should be able to get online, but I won't be online as often. (I'll have other things to do. ;) )

So don't burn the place down while I'm gone, and I'll be back full-time next weekend! Let me know if anything happens!

Great WW episode.

But it didn't take long for me to grow tired of TWoP, honestly. It just struck me as pointless. I sort of wondered why so many people were watching shows that they obviously hated and could barely stand sitting through.

As I suspected, no sign of the rotund fetid one. Papergirl and I searched high and low but he was not to be found. We directed a few indy (and a few NON indy ones) creators to CBR in general and to avoid Rick Olney in particular.

Con survived us, though we both left with many edged weapons. Myself with throwing sharp and pointies, Papergirl with a two handed sword and a dagger for close up work.

Pics to come in their own thread soon with details, though that may not happen until Monday.

Thank you all for your advice and words of wisdom. Maybe I will get to see Rick in COURT real soon. Heh, heh, heh....

I was headed toward Orlando as I said I was on Friday, so if you called at that number (which is not a cell, I hate cell phones), then it is very likely no one was there.

Umm, it should be 'Nitpickers of the world, unite!', with a comma. Just sayin'.

Doesn't that really depend on whether it's intended as a command or as a simple declarative? (And before anyone posits that the fact that the original was posted in all caps with two exclamation points gives clear intent of its commanding nature, I merely wish to suggest that the original poster may simply have been shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you - to discover that nitpickers of the world DO, in fact, unite.)

In Chicago a friend and I always stay at the Marriott Suites down the street. It's walking distance and really reasonable for suites. If you've got several going it works out great because the rooms have a bedroom with either 1 king or 2 double size beds and then there is a loveseat in the living room area that is a hide-a-bed. Also, there is a sink and changing area that can be shut off from either the bathroom or the bedroom so different people can have privacy while changing.

I highly recommend them.

Lucky that you have the "stay at home option". The funniest thing I ever saw was my second year at WW Chicago -- a whole bunch of Storm Troopers and Star Wars: A New Hope Princess Leia (yes, the white dress and the double bun hairdo) getting off at the station down the street from the convention center.

Hotel is a requirement for my posse I'm afraid -- We come from three different cities and two states (Kansas City, St. Louis and Detroit).

Still -- Tom, when you know, let me know what booth you're at at Chicago and I'll drop by... Maybe I can do a little write-up on Honor Brigade for Broken Frontier.

I'm trying to remember which ones I remember, then, because unless I'm smoking crack or there was some special canadian marketing deal going on, there was this one of spider-man's head over the front of some underwear or other.

Nah. If they had a face on them, they're not underoos. Not true ones, anyway. (Think of Scooby Doo both pre- & post- Scrappy, and you'll know what I mean.)

iirc, Spidey's had a black spider on them. Maybe a little bit of webs, but not much.

Does anyone know what Rick meant by "flushing birds"? And how would a beagle do it?

"Flushing birds" is a hunting term, meaning to drive the birds out of the bushes they are hiding in, and into flight. Beagles were trained for this type of hunting, rushing in, bounching about, barking.

And I know that from reading period literature, not actual hunting experience. But he does have that much right. But he still mangled the reference by his obsession with rear ends and his need to reference them.

ANALYSIS OF TEXT:

"The 'new' Rick"
A false assumption: humans do not really get remade (in spite of "make-over" shows). They can repent, reform, even repair. Tempting as it is to speculate on religious conversion, my mockery only runs so far.

"actually has enough brains"
Debatable. Unproven. Lack of evidence.

"to not let his emotions"
Not sure he has any, at least in the generally accepted sense. His are all self-centered and self-serving. No empathy, sympathy or "common feeling."

"no longer affect the thinking processes of others,"
Error. Last time I checked, he was not endowed with the ability to control the thinking processes of others in any fashion. In fact, he successfully produces reactions in the thinking processes of others by opening his mouth, or posting "simple" statements - because their incomprehensibility requires others to apply their brains to attempt to understand what the heck he meant!

"no matter how flawed their views may be. "
Non-sequitur. The "flawed views" of others apparently NEVER affected poor peanut in the first place. Their clear views, however, may do just that, when called before courts as witnesses.

There's something sick with my brain, in that I've actually missed the exercise of trying to decipher RO's mangled prose! I need a cure or something.

What is "to drive the birds out of the bushes they are hiding in, and into flight. "?

bird hunting beagle we had when I was a kid. Now THERE was a dog that
couldn't keep his nose glued to another dogs rear end instead of
flushing birds. lol

Don't take the comparison personal. I just think that a legal matter

Wizard always books a block of rooms at each hotel. If you've booked through their travel agency in the past, you'll be receiving an email in a month or 2 I would think. ;)

So that "booked solid" probably means Wizard has a hold on rooms for the con.

Yeah, but how many did you see that were wearing football jerseys? Both you and I should have been easy to have been pointed out in that bunch of people and neither of us saw anyone with football jerseys.

I know what R.O. looks like and did not see him, but that does not mean he could not have been there; however, from past experiences of his MO, I have a strong suspicion that he was not there. I saw someone who looked like him, but the guy was too young and had too much hair to be him.

No, you're right, obviously, nobody is perfect. I just find it absurd
that the very things that I am being accused of have happened for
yaers on end within small press and indy publishing. Yet I have
unknowingly and unintentionally bridged the gap with standard publishing.

I also see that Tim Tobolski has recently joined this egroup. I hope
he can manage to obey the rules. Ian Shires didn't.

Mr. Shires has also said, "I indeed posted Ricks public words
elsewhere. If that brings sanctions against me here, I'll gladly leave
the group here. I am not going to address Rick in any way. However, I
have numerous professional friends who have real vested interests in
the current actions of Mr. Olney…and felt they needed to know he was

matters at hand. I'm not involved but to KEEP myself not involved."

Mr. Shires, you have ALREADY entangled yourself along with a number of
others from that CBR thread. Do not forget that everything comes full
circle. Make no mistake that your "numerous professional friends" are
only such while the shite can be savored. Once the matter goes
strictly into a court you'll be called to answer for anything that my
attorney feels is relevent. That also applies to Mr. Tobolski. Having
a dozen idiots recant a lie and embellish it with every telling isn't
the truth. It isn't a big bag of misconception on my part. I would
also like to know WHO these 100 people were that you claim I've
wronged. By all means, publish a list... please. How YOU or anyone
can lay claim to knowing what originally began as a legal matter
between Chuck Dixon and TightLip Entertainment, to be worked out
between our attornies, only to be dragged into "Gail Simone's"

Jim,
There are about a dozen people -- IF they are all unique and singular identities -- that have made it there 'mission' to harrass and libel me.

What I did was fall outside of my original payment agreement to Chuck Dixon (and now others involved in certain TLE book projects) during that span of time late last July during the death periods of my mother, a 26 year old niece of ours, and my mother-in-law. From that time on, it has been a 'game' by certain 'professional' people to pick the matter apart. People not having any life of their own have clung to the topic. And yes, I am in the midst of several very real legal battles that will play out in the court system. But again, the level of libel and the embellishing of fact to pure fantasy from the minds of a handful of CBR idiots is MY business and not that of Mr. Shires. Mr. Shires needs to get a LIFE of his own.

opportunity of speaking out and owning up to any shortcomings on this
matter? Contrary to Mr. Shires spout-off, I'm here to interact with a

have been told that I can address in conversation.

Lance, you have said a bevy of things that, because you see and read
others taking shots at me ... seems to give you some idea that YOU
have a right to talk as you have. This matter didn't concern you. It
does now. And, as such, I won't be addressing you or anyone else that

'Holy Christ, can't you simply staple your flapping lips shut for once!?! I only just joined the group; I haven't even made my first post yet. And already I'm being accused of ulterior motives.

I joined to get in contact with Jim to -- hopefully -- get a few projects re-ignited; I admit I also wanted to watch you side-step yourself into oblivion. But believe me, I had no intention of even acknowledging your existence.

But you had to drag me into it again. First I was shanghaied into being an ally in Rich Johnston's LitG column (which you knew nothing about even though you gave Rich permission to use my name); now I'm one of the 'plebes', part of Gail's 'sideshow', another of the faceless mob handing out torches and pitchforks to take down the Olney-beast. Don't you ever learn?

Why do you feel the necessity to launch into an instant defense of yourself whenever you join a group? Are you that starved for attention? That why you constantly kidnap me into your dramas, knowing I'll inevitably have people follow? You coulda given me 30 seconds or so to catch my breath before hurling your 'warnings'.'

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by posting only part of my response here first. I really don't wanna lose my membership, but I've had all I can fecking take from this gobshyte.

I appearantly mistook his agreement. I posted the proposal, his next post was sure why not, but appearantly it was a reply to something else.

I tried to talk to him about it, he said he wouldn't be bullied. I asked how he can have a fair Q+A about this if he's only listening to one side.

Soon after, I said I was done there. And I mean it. I'll only bounce my body off the door a few times, if nothing gives, it's time to walk away.

Its really unbelievable someone would take 1 persons word over countless creators who have stepped forward and many ( Dixon, Waid and Busiek carry enough wieght it shouldn't be an issue) . I'm sorry...but that guy deserves to discover the truth about things on his own and when it happens , he will only have himself to blame.

Well, I'm sorry to learn that someone (in this case, Jim Main) is falling for Rick's "poor me, and I'm such a reasonable guy" act. For now. Although you'd think the language RO uses of people would be enough of a warning (comparing people to a dog with its nose stuck in another dog's butt? not cool).

Still... How long will Rick be able to keep it up in such a small arena as someone else's closed yahoo group?

In any case, even though I need to do some updating on the Chronology, in addition to RO's posts (in his own words), there is the cold hard data on the sequence of events. I've tried to keep from editorializing in the Chronology itself, just presenting the bare facts. But even the bare facts of the sequence of his actions doesn't make him look too good.

RO keeps claiming that people that he hasn't been contractually bound to have no right to stick their noses in "the business". Sorry, but when people care about each other, and victims allow the "outsiders" to give them support, then the "outsiders" are involved. By choice. Because they care. His saying they don't have a right is irrelevant. We happen to care about the situation, and about how it reflects on our profession as a whole.

He also tries, rather deserately, to make it seem like the only legal matter he's facing is the one with Chuck Dixon (and Chuck's artists), on the TOTS matter. But we know that to be wrong. Ronee hasn't been paid, Tim hasn't been paid, so many others haven't been paid -- over the course of several years. It's ridiculous that he thinks he can still brush things off dismissively. That his word really is "good enough".

My dog just got a PM from Rick's dog, and apparently things there aren't as good as Rick implies.

According to the dog, Fred, his relationship with Rick began well enough, but soon thereafter disintegrated into a morass of broken promises, unwarranted legal threats, and the difficult realization that affections and loyalties had been misplaced.

Fred would like it known that the current hunting-related story being bandied about by Rick is false. There was no work-related sniffing of hindquarters, and moreover, when it was proposed while on said trip, Fred had to first politely, then vehemently decline to participate.

Things went downhill from there. Fred was entered in a dog show, which was cancelled five times before going forward, and was then asked, at the last minute, to go for a tick dip and manicure. Rick had generously offered to pay all costs, but when the bill came, begged off on the excuse that he had offered to pay for dog biscuits for another canine attendee - who proceeded to bring along his whole litter. Rick apologized profusely, and even claimed that, in retaliation, he covertly sold the other canine's puppies to someone named Cruella De Ville, but subsequent inquiries revealed De Ville to in fact be a cartoon character.

Fred paid for the tick dip and manicure, and attended the dog show, expecting Rick would compensate him afterwards... but on inquiry, Rick flew into a rage, stating that "Fred" was a pseudonym for the dog's real name, "Buster", and therefore the promise to pay had been made to a dog that doesn't exist, nullifying the obligation.

Fred politely chose to begin severing ties, but on realizing that stories were being posted which indicated he was supportive of Rick, decided to come forward and shed a little light on the matter. Fred is on his own now, but feels he is wiser for the experience.

Edited to add: My dog just got another PM from Fred. Apparently, Mark Waid's dog got him a job as a guard dog at Steve Geppi's Comics Museum, so all is good with Fred. Thanks, Krypto!

Where in that CBR thread is there room or fairness in allowing me the
opportunity of speaking out and owning up to any shortcomings on this
matter? There was plenty of room for you to do so.

However, when given the chance to post here, you made statements that you knew you owed people money but placed additional conditions on their being paid. And you were rightly judged on that.
You also engaged in homophobic insults, threatened folks, and made statements that were untrue on the very face of them. You made promises here that you failed to keep. Indeed, had no one ever heard of you before your actions on this thread, those very actions would have earned the scorn of reasonable folks.
Here's a suggestion, Rick: instead of whining, threatening, and acting simultaneously like a bully and a coward, how about you pay the people you owe money to, without them having to head to the court system to get it out of you? It will take much effort to dig your reputation out of the hole which you have tunneled it into, but that would be the obvious and most effective first step.

I'd like to ask everyone to please leave Jim Main out of this. Jim's a helluva guy and publishing powerhouse. So he's colleagues with Moby; that just means Jim's never seen the side of him that we all have.

And I pray he never does. Jim deserves much better than that.

Moby's words speak for him. As do his subsequent deletions. And broken promises. And empty threats.

Don't let this become misplaced battle lines.

Besides, we've all got enough to worry about, being on Moby's 'short list' of legal actions. I'm worried; he's got my ISP and everything! Of course, so does my attorney . . .

Jim doesn't want Ian to post responses here, and yet Rick posts responses from HERE over THERE.

Of course, with his brand of reality thrown in for good measure. (Yes, it's a brand, not a slant. It's probably made in a tub out back. There IS farmland in upstate NY. I had some great, farm fresh, white corn when I was stationed at Stewart ANG Base. There's a small contingent of Marines there for I&I duty, training the reserves during their drill weekends.)

Perhaps Jim (or someone) should point out to RO that it's inappropriate to "respond" to public posts in an arena where the probable posters cannot defend themselves.

Oh, wait! What am I thinking? He used to do that on his blog - inviting people to post on mySpace, whether they were registered there or not being irrelevant. Because, of course, he's not really interested in the free exchange of ideas or comments.

Did he go there just to find another place to spout off about how he's being persecuted by plebes and trolls? Unjustly? Ha! Coward.

Funnily enough, because they're trying to be good people.

Good people don't listen to things that may be lies.

Good people give their friends second chances.

Think about it, back in the day, if people had come to you, on the forums you managed, and started, without first discussing it, at length, burden of proof on them, to tell you that a man you're working with, a man you believe to be trying to work with you, was an evil, lying, smelly asshat?

It'd be enough to make you defensive, and the more you argued that you weren't tyring to slander the guy, and the more the guy argued that you were, the more it would seem as if you were being unreasonable.

If it were a normal situation, I'd write this one off as 'you can't save those who don't want saving' and leave it alone.

But then, usually saving people from making the wrong friends doesn't also save them from being swindled in the buisiness that they're working on.

It's a difficult position.

The problem here is that Jim doesn't want to hear what you have to say.

Even if, and this is a big if, we could present it as a rational discourse at this point, with a list of people who have been monatarily damaged by him, the damages, the list of charges, and with care and preperation, make it as uninflamatory, and informational as possible (Just the facts, Ma'am.) we would still have to compete with RO's responses, which would be personal attacks, obfuscation, dissembly, and other such things, judging from his history.

My point is, even if we could do all that, Jim is the only one who can make his judgement. It is our duty as responsible members of society to speak against rick, to present the damages, and to press court cases to seek reparation, and to punish someone who has done wrong. It is not our place to make up people's minds.

Trying to fight against people making their own choices only hurts our image.

We may not agree with their choices. We may find it best to avoid people who associate with Olney. It is a choice which they must make though.

Nani?

Where in all that did you draw that particular conclusion sir?

I'm confused.

I'm saying that people trying to be good people explains why people don't always see the manipulators around them. It's a problem of society.

I would like to believe that society doesn't need laws and rules telling us not to cheat and steal and take advantage of our good will. But the fact is, some people will take advantage of a second chance, just to hurt you further.

Being aware of that is a life lesson I've learned.

Being a good person is not wrong. But sometimes, there are people who do not change, who being a good person to only opens up their friends to further hurt and avenues of harm.

Thus, my post stands, as written, without further addition nor amendment.

It is your place to take what you will from it, and if it seems I criticize good people, understand merely that I find trust hard to give myself these days, and I think that even the best people must learn to protect themselves. No one can teach you where to draw a line for forgiveness.

Be well, and Be well, and all will be Well.

Well there's a reason it seems like "Rick against so many". He's shafted so many, and through his own action's and words, angered even more. He's burned more bridges then Sherman heading through Atlanta. It's of his own doing. He wrote that dirge himself... so let him face the music!!

I'm not saying you wish to invite a flame war to your boards, and that's understandable. But in Rick's case... anything said to or about him, is generally, well deserved... and earned.
