By the way, it occured to me the other day just how ridiculous Olney is.

I have a blog (www.whyilovecomics.com- go check it out to see the connection between Gnarls Barkley and the Riddler!). It's built on Wordpress, which means I can take any theme from the thousands out there, customize it, and plug it in easily. The code's easy to understand, and there's plenty of support docs.

One problem- I'm not a good designer. I can code, but I can't put fonts and colors together in an attractive format, and I'd like a pretty blog.

I found a designer who did some fantastic work, and it seemed like she was just getting started, and I thought she could take a theme she designed for another client, change up the graphics and fonts, and do the whole thing for no more than $100-$150, $200 at the most. Instead, she gave me an elaborate, well-thought estimate for $800. She explained why she'd have to do it that way, and I couldn't see any fault in her logic, even if the project would be impossible for me to afford.

If I had been Olney, I would have either lied to her and told her I would pay her, then stiff her over an NDA, insulting her at the end. Instead, I thanked her for her time, reaffirmed how much I liked her work, and remarked that at least I knew what a good professional would charge.

I'm still without a theme I really love, but I'm sure I'll find something. And I'm not Olney. :)

Couple of Unscrewed! things because I know a lot of people watching this thread aren't over on the Unscrewed! site.

I intend to set up a page listing everyone who has been shafted by Olney along with links to any works they have available for purchase. No one is required to participate, but if you would like to be listed on the page, I have set up a thread on the Unscrewed! forum, post the information and I'll start working on the page.

Everyone, not just the screwed, if you have a web strip or an idea for a web strip, Unscrewed! is accepting web comics. More information is up on the Unscrewed! forum.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Olney watching.

No you didn't do the following steps.

1. Contact and get well thought estimate.

2. Wait weeks and weeks as she soon forgets it. Then tell her again you want it. When she quotes the price again you must slam Devon Grayson as a creator in the industry . Use vulger terms too as you scare this woman.

3. After she does work claim your Enertainment Company will soon make a check payable to her account.

4. Weeks pass. After numerous e-mails claim your great Aunt Petunia just died of old age at 103 in some far away state. You've been gone all that time.

5. Weeks pass again. Claim you suffered a mild stroke and can't use your right check writing hand yet. She'll have to wait awhile longer.

6. By now she's angry but tell her she'll have to sign a NDA and then clear it thru your lawyer Jackie Chiles . He'll send her contact information on a Monday.

7. More weeks pass as by now she wants that information . Warn her that going public will unleash Jackie Chiles and his Sienfeldesque lawyer skills !

8. By now she's went public. Go to her site and let loose a barrage of slurs against her , gays and anyone that can read her blog.

If you follow this list you shall become THE ONE. :p

By the way, PLEASE tell me the project you two are working on is even "maybe", a new Gryphon book.

If not I'll settle for some more Jennifer Talldeer. I like that girl- she's got SPUNK.

Well I guess I'll make your day... Doc A & Wil R here at YABS are, in fact, doing summaries & notes from the three Gryphon book for new Mage Wars era Gryphon books. They're also doing the same for a new Tannim Drake/Shar/Foxtrot/Chinthliss SERRA book.

It occured to me today that the proof that this thread is NOT a "dogpile" - especially an unwarranted one - is in the fact that it has quieted down in this waiting period. We are actually content to twiddle our thumbs waiting for real news.

Sure, if we find yet another example of his past stupidities, we examine it and comment on it. But beyond getting out of our systems our astonishment at this particular specimen, we're not endlessly ranting about him.

We wait on REAL events - either another eruption of Himself, or news (at the appropriate moments) of legal actions.

It's not that this thread is "out of life". It's that we're now in vigilance (as in watching) mode. Waiting. But moving ahead with other stuff.

Like I said, that should be proof that this isn't the "ganging up" that RO has accused it of being. At least, not the way he meant it.

Fuck, Rick's pissed off a Catholic institution ?

He's beyond screwed.

More than that. He pissed off an organization founded by Danny Thomas. There are very few people who really frighten me, but one of them is Marlo Thomas, and one of the things she will go all mother bear over is her father's memory. Do not cross her.

Rick got in touch with a PR person from Marvel back in maybe 1994 and we (Rick, myself, and one other) took a bus to NYC to tour Marvel, DC, and Valient. Rick expressed his views on accessibility to younger readers and I'm sure he must have mentioned how comics are out of childrens price range. I believe Rick mentioned that he more inspired it rather than started it, which could be true because they must have thought over what he said at that meeting and future phone calls. I can see why his name never would have come up, giving credit, but he may have had some influence on it getting started a year or so later.

Bingo. I worked on packaging for a Comics in the Classroom program published by Gateway Educational Products in 1993, before ORCA existed. It was based around reprints of Classics Illustrated bundled with audio tapes of the scripts. I still have some of them.

It is a proven fact, ORCA did not invent the concept of comics in the classroom, and anyone who says they did is a liar or wilfully ignorant.

Olney continues inroads to Fanzine group:

...Rick recently reactivated his membership to this group and is going
to answer any question you may want to put to him now. Just remember
guys, I will NOT tolerate any cursing here, and request any
discussions be handled politely and with no violent tendencies.

One person will ask the other a question. The other will answer it.
The person who answers it can asks that person a question and so on.
Anyone else who wants to ask a question must wait their turn until the
first two people are done with their question session, which will ahve
a limit of ten questions each. Anybody getting out of line/out of
hand,in MY judgement will be expelled from this group.

PLEASE ABIDE BY THESE RULES!

Actually, that was supposed to be about the 99 cent line of comics. I'm pretty sure he didn't originate either one but you really can't be sure what influence he had.

Another story is that Rick believed a character named Ricko the Sicko from issue 3 or 4 of Green Goblin was named after him. It seemed like an odd character name but if it was named after Rick, you have to wonder what they thought of him at Marvel. At the time, it seemed like every few months he had another one of these stories.

At this point, it's not like the work is needed (I should have a fat royalty check in a month or so) on my end, but it would certainly be way more artistically fufilling than painting 3d horses (http://hollowcomic.com/dazstuff/silver1.jpg) for said royalties so other people can use them in their art projects and claim the credit. x.x

But at 50% royalty rates, I can't complain too much, even if it's dead boring.

You know, when I first saw her pic in an issue of Wizard, and her artwork beside it, I was floored.

I didn't think such a woman could exist- beautiful to look at, beautiful artwork, and drawing COMICS! The only thing that could make her even more perfecter (yeah, I made up a word! what?!) is if she were also a bodybuilder. (I'm a strange one, I know, but I love beautiful, bodybuildin' wimmins.) If I knew girls that liked comics, and we actually talked to each other, whoooo buddy, I would be happy.

I still refuse to believe that any women have anything to do with comics. I think it's just men trying to get men interested in their work by claiming they're women....

But I'm going to try my best to at least get this girl im with to get into comics somewhat...then my whole ideas will change.

But until I witness firsthand....

Dude, the reason I first struck up a conversation with the girl who became the love of my life is because she used the handle "Harley Quinn" on a totally non-comic related website. Geekgirls are hawt. :D

Quoted for truth.

When I was young there weren't any people, let alone girls, that I knew who read comics except me. I felt terribly isolated.

Now, I go to conventions and sit at my table, and I see so many females into comics either as creators or fans...it's a beautiful thing.

Terrific convention in Perth Australia that Misty & were GoHs at, at one point, a knockout model dressed as Leeloo from The Fifth Element --- in the white bandages outfit --- comes up to us. She is accompanied by several other damned attractive ladies, one in a Naomi Armitage outfit, another as I think it may have been a Gunsmith Cats outfit.

Leeloo is getting autographs on the costume. She wants me to sign it directly between the breasts. And keep in mind, she's a very close match to Milla Jovovich in her assets. So I have my Sharpie in hand, and I say, "Hold still," and she plants my left hand on her left breast to steady me, while Naomi Armitage and the others press on in. About then, Misty slips in on my right side and goes down into the classic Frazetta-painting "servile female" pose clutching my right thigh, looking up adoringly.

"I love my job," I say.

If you ever wonder if all the hard work is worth it, remember---these things happen. :)

PS: Misty signed the back of the bandage costume with "Multipass! Big Badaboom!"

You know.. when I saw your work I thought you were a guy..you draw like a guy..thats great"..What does that mean? LOL

No one hate me for this, but I often have a mental image of what a creator looks like based on their work. Various images include: The unkept slacker working in his mom's basement, the total comic book geek, the old guy, the goth girl, the married housewife who works at home. Of course--most often the preconceived images I have are quite wrong when I see a picture of X.

Stereotypically "guy" art: Rob Liefield/90's Image -- exaggerated man-parts, breasts, boring hair, lots of "comic book style poses"

Stereotypically "girl" art: Anything out of an Elfquest Book, Trina Robbins -- more realistic anatomy, detailed facial expressions, lack of tesosterone in male poses. (For example, I can't see a male artist ever drawing a pose like this on Valor: http://www.damianobrigo.it/valorbig.jpg -- love ya Colleen!

Both have pros and cons, and I'm not saying the stereotype is right--I can think of several artists who "draw like a guy/girl" and vice versa, but those are the images that just come into my head.

I do that. I drag whomever is unlucky enough to be with me when I feel the need to hit a comic store. I can't wait to drag my unsuspecting new boyfriend into a shop...

UM...I hate to break it to you, but a male artist DID draw that picture of Valor. That is not my work.

LOL!

Well, that is nice, but even I realize that my cute girl cartoonist days are over and there are lots cuter and younger now, and that is fine.

Except it is harder to keep my ass smaller than it used to be. I'm not fine with that...And there is nothing gender based about being a freelancer who sits around working all day, worrying about getting a bigger ass. We don't call it "freelancer spread" for nothing.

I'd like to get a look at these Byrne fans who were criticizing your appearance. Do they have room to talk about other people's looks?

Anyway, whenever women do something, it all boils down to our uterus and how it affects our ability to perform our jobs. And that pisses me off.

For me, my assumptions about the genders of artists/writers actually have stemmed from their names. For example, it was only recently that I discovered that Chris Claremont and Ale Garza were men. Not a huge shocker, mind you, but I always pictured them as women for some reason until I read up more about them. ^^;;

And thanks for the answer, Gail! I've actually sort of met you before. Over on Comicboards, I was the guy a few months ago who asked about why Power Girl was rather put-off by the roses (as if you couldn't figure out from the sigs linking to my webcomic. ^^;; ).

So what actually goes on at a Rick Olney convention? Besides for his inability to pay people, are they actually fun or are they like him - shallow and full of lies?

All I know is that in my short time as a "pro" with a table at conventions, I've seen literally thousands of people walk by me in a course of a weekend. Many are women. Teens, college age, 20s and up. Many of the creators I've met and become friends with are women.

One of the many, many reasons I'm glad to me married is that I'd probably get my heart broken a half dozen times with all the wonderful women in and around comics now.

When my husband decided to switch (for now) from working on playwriting to working on comics, and wanted grungy watercolor for his comic, I decided to branch out into comics as well, since I've been reading them since I was a kid, (but the market for my style of color is slim and I want to see stuff other than airbrushing gain ground; superhero books are likely out of the question since I don't airbrush, so I simply saw no viable opportunity until we started our own project ourselves).

Rick talking about Tightlip

Hi all!

I thought I'd post an update. I asked DOC to remove the TightLip Entertainment forum from here because I simply didn't have time to update it as often as it needed to be. But I thought that this thread might be a good way to let you in on what's going on. So here goes:

What is TightLip Entertainment?

Well, originally, TightLip was the name I picked as my publishing imprint. I made a few mistakes eraly on on this wacky internet and accepted people at face value. As such, several of my original story and character concepts were pirated from me. Live and learn, right?

I also had several run-ins on message boards and, yeah, I have a unique personality. My word inflection comes across rough sometimes. But people meeting me in person soon learn that I am not anything like my online percieved persona. Okay, so that's me in a nutshell. Well, that and my interview here:

http://www.jazmaonline.com/interviews/interviews2.asp?intID=290

TightLip actually has several things being worked on presently. TightLip employs 4 staff, and that doesn't include our PR/Marketing guy, Rich Sullivan. So tally that at 5 staff and two volunteers. We also now employ a bookkeeping service.

Presently -- The Spooky is being turned into a haunt attraction that'll open each year on September 30th and close November 1st. It is NOT a convention. I learned the hard way that hosting a horror convention is more costly than it is worth these days. So buying a piece of property which offers 4 good sized bedrooms upstairs, and bathroom, with a main entrance area, living room, dining room, sizeable kitchen, and a den downstairs seemed like a good investment once my finances cleared up after 2004-2005's bleak health and parental financial future. There's a full stand-up basement with an entrance to outside, and an attic that is drop-dead-spectacular.

'Course having carpenters and electricians adding things and fixing stuff to code for the general public is no small task. But when The Spooky opens it'll have 6 theme rooms, a path to follow from the cellar to attic and back that'll take our paying customers from start to finish. Each room has two different guest surprises, and after hours tours are going to be spooky beyond belief. During the hours of operation, we'll have a gift shop offering things like t-shirts, spooky novelties, movies, comic-books, tpb's, and a few small press books...if I can make the connections. The kitchen has been stripped and converted to offer a theme. We have a working plan on offering things like a seance in the attic, and I just okayed to have a small theatre situated. Well, big screen television where we'll offer horror screeners. The Spooky will offer celebrity guests during October weekends. With a more party atmosphere that third weekend in October. People will be able to buy tickets in advance from the *new* www.thespookyny.com and www.thespooky.com (once it is finished) and
we'll features less scary hauntings for the kids during October weekday evenings. It will be as simple as following the blood red blotched drippings on the floor.

The Mighty Mini-Con is still at www.mightyminicon.com

We are on track for a 2 day convention on June 3rd & 4th. You can view our guest list thus far on the rotating marque. Check it out! We also have a September 2 day MMC planned.

The MMC boards have been a long time in getting comfortable, and I believe that once the forums on TightLip Entertainment's new website are situated ... we'll be downsizing them ... and asking people to gravitate over to the new www.tightlipentertainment.com website. A revision on the MMC is planned for late 2007 early 2008 to include more columns and more active comics stuff.

Here's a basic design on it to view:

Additionally, with each book that TightLip publishes a new page similar to these two will be created.
The Monster Squad

Freedom 3

We STILL have legalities to work out regarding TightLip's 3rd book, BLOOD HARVEST, but that'll be resolved shortly. And, I'm pleased to announce that by this time a year from now we'll have two more primary titles and have our first creator owned (other than my other creative counter-part projects) title.

TightLip will offer a variety of items from its shopping cart. It also will be overseeing the re-emergence of ORCA and ORCAkids, via www.orcafresh.org

There is also space there for the ORComx APA, which shortly will mail its 60th issue.

Well, that's all I have to update you all on. I hope you're all healthy and well. Publishing comics is my last life goal. I'm involved in a couple other projects, but I'm not at liberty to comment on those yet.

So how you doin'?..

DOC, please tell Gene That I greatly enjoyed his article. I've been saying (below) the same thing for many years to people who would listen.

quote: "If nothing else it should remind some of us of the quality that drew many fans to comics in the first place: The medium's perculiar genius for seting free the human imagination in some of its most unbridled forms."

Without imagination, its all just pictures and ink.

Oh, and do yourself a favor and place a link on the page bottom of that article that'll take the reader directly to the message thread conversation.

I always admired that about you, Phil.

Realizing we had a small fallout. Can you and I patch the differences and move forward?

If so, understand that your ad -- paid for last year WILL run in this June's program. You can either update it or have it appear as it was intended for public consumption last year. Additionally, I'm on public record here stating that I'll gladly reimbuse your $35 dollars paid last year for that ad IN PERSON should you want to come set up at a table provide for you FREE_OF_CHARGE.

My apology will be in person also. Let's work together and cut out the BS. What do you say?

Steve, I'm not sure where you're located, but my convention is always looking to give small press self and independent publishers a free first table.

I can also give you some front page plug on my website, and if your book is horror related -- you can get plugged on my www.thespookyny.com too, once its back up. It is presently under a facelift for this October.

Okay, and I'm not sure if you've heard or not -- But I also have leadership inclusion in a comics reader's advocacy group known simply as "ORCA" which is the acronym for Organized Readers of Comics Associated. We've been away after a two year hiatus -- but our newsletter FRESH is being retooled as I type this and we'd welcome ADS from ANY small presser wanting to reach a bunch of our readers.

We have an egroup at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ORCAprime/
Membership is free during 2005. A comp mailing otherwise means you only need to send me your mailing address. You can email it to me at: orcafresh@att.net

Guess that's about it... I have self published and I consider myself a small press creator. Good luck! icon_biggrin.gif

What are you gonna do now?

Sure, I'd like to get enough work at this gig to quit my day job, but so would anyone else. I mean besides that. A lot of good stuff has happened both for me, and because of my involvement here at IF. There's also been a lot of stuff happening at other sites too. A few things everyone seems to have in common is:

• Comics don't have a large fan (customer) base anymore.
• Unless you work for one of the Big 3 companies, you can't support yourself by working in this industry alone.
• Everyone in the biz would like to change the above 2 statements.

I stumbled across this site a few weeks ago. Am I the only one (again) who didn't know this existed ?

http://www.teachingcomics.org/about.php

I'll expound on this 'thought' thing later.

Teaching Comics.org was a spin off by a handful of creative people AFTER ORCA introduced my concept of "Comics in the Classoom" to the industry and hobby.

That initial first step helped to open the minds of creators into believing in themselves and amoungst each other that the comic book could influence educational settings and be taken seriously. 'Course, don't expect any of those people to ever come clean on their motivation or inspiration. Their group isn't the only group to take on such a task. Find me any of them that pre-date 1993 as a collective. I've done the looking. None of them existed prior to ORCA's efforts and my audacious behavior on the Internet and out in the society sector. Of which, I'm nothing in person like my online personna. Grasp the mission, see the goal, strike the target in the heart.

Oops Tightlip in trouble?

Posted: Thu Mar 10, 2005 4:34 pm Post subject: Reply with quote
I had a tremendously bad business year with TightLip Enteratinment in 2004. 'Course, thanks to our Uncle Sam -- That will mean I'll have a great tax year.

TightLip Entertainment was set up to administer to several areas of this hobby and business I've been involved with over the last 13years. 13 years out of a total of 47 years in this hobby is nothing.

I know that there are still areas that NOBODY is concentrating on.

I opened up the educational factor on how this industry looks at, respects, and inter-relates with teachers, parents, and other educators.

I helped greatly in introducing the .99 cent comic book concept employed by Marvel, DC, and then a number of other publishers.

2005 to 2010 will focus on spotlighting small press AS independent publishers. It doesn't matter what sort of format you use in small press as long as you're being creative and people ARE reading and viewing your efforts. If they ENJOY your creation(s) that's even better.

TightLip Entertainment oversees and mangaaes the Mighty Mini-Con (check my sig link). You'll see tremendous changes there in the next 14-16 months. Changes that wil make the common curious person want to explore sequential art and comic books. ALL KINDS OF COMIC BOOKS!

TightLip doesn't mean lip service. It means not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Stop by the columns section of the MMC and read my column IN A NUTSHELL. It will soon feature an ongoing column on Small Press.

More MMC Hype

Hi Rod,
Yes, I'm aware that this message thread is old, but I wanted or NEEDED to respond.

I actually got into conventioneering BECAUSE there was no event being held in upstate New York. Lots going on in the big apple ... but nothing from Albany, NY all the way to Buffalo.

I also have long encouraged small press in a variety of ways over my career in this hobby and business. That hasn't always made me friends with everyone, I mean -- I got bounced outta the SPA for speaking ill of how Wizard treated Crazee Comics last year. My words were edited and censored and a long litany of nonsense between Ian Shires and at times, myself, began. I've heard that he still tends to vilify me. Anyone close to me knows that I'm not intimidated. Nor am I going to stop assisting and supporting small press independent publishing where I see I can. All the lies and half truths in the world can't erase the full truth.

So, when you're looking again for a nice convention to introduce your comics to new readers ... consider the Mighty Mini-Con.

Among other reasons, I just didn't have the hardware to handle such resource-intensive work until recently. (And I was working on other stuff until a couple of laptops died ad took a good chunk of my projects with them.)

I saw the colors you did for Hollow, and I gotta tell you, I LOVED them. I loved them so much that I'd like you to color a book of mine, once I get it approved and get the right artist for it. I'll definitely be in touch if/when this book happens.

Ya know DC's Vertigo Imprint ? I saw Karen Berger at a Convention and told her they needed mature comics line at DC. See the Max line at Marvel. I started swearing at Marvel over raising the cost at Captain Marvel in 2002 and it was the reason it was created.

I think thats how his stuff goes. That he takes the credit for things in a way that is pretty silly and many have proved he's not done anything except hand some comics out to some people like Busiek's Astro City.

But on more fun things ...I loved your Firestorm & Captain Marvel Mr.Cross. I was bummed when you and Jolley left that series. Anything lined up at Marvel/DC ? Love to see ya on a monthly book again.

AH A husband and wife team (or wife and husband), just like my great freinds at Kiss-Me-Comix, It great that couple can share in this hobby/industry.

Yeah. (It doesn't matter, my ego is big enough to not care if I come first or second in terminology.) XD

It's useful in that he'll bounce his writing off me and I'll help with some of that, and I'll bounce colors off him and he'll offer his input. We've had creative disagreements, but we're mature enough to get over it and move on.

I think that having a dependable and proactive partner helps, because you can both lift each other up when the stresses of the industry grind you down.

I'm sure we'll eventually work on projects separately, but I figure it's better to initially storm the Bastille with your best friend and solid business partner at your side.

(I consider reading comics to be my hobby and working on comics to be my profession. I never consider any art job a hobby, I think it leads to taking work too casually and it's vital, as an artist, not to turn into a laissez-faire flake.)

Steve: Thank you, and please do! (Now I'm interested, feel free to tell me more. XD)

It's not like I don't think there's a market out there for my stuff, but being published makes it easier for other creators to know there's someone in that style out there for projects they might have had on the backburner somewhere. (Like, say, Steve!) :D

And thank you, Doc!

While I do have the benefit, as it were, of the hindsight of everyone else's misfortune in regards to Olney, I am still stunned that he's gotten away with it for this long.

People in comics are a good, forgiving bunch, I guess. It's taken a long time for people to get fed up enough to flood this thread, I don't see why anyone should be portrayed as mean-spirited given how many chances they've given. If anything forbearing and patient would be better descriptors.

Guys, is ANY of what Rick says even remotely true?

Does he really have his hands in all of this stuff?

I need to keep an eye on this thread more. I step away for a few hours a new page and eleventy billion posts have sprung up.

But no, as pretty much a bunch of people have already said, and probably even more by the time I hit the post button will. Rick has never really truly accomplished anything by himself. Anything that actually got done you can attribute to him riding on the backs of people more talented than he.

There's word he plans on relaunching Orca in April. This I will believe, when I see, if Rick isn't in jail by then which may be the case.

I think it's really funny what he said about the "legalities" of Blood Harvest. What in the HELL was that about? I had a story for that, which went back and forth, he RUSHED us to get it done by x date which meant there was no time to really proof it, and there were some snags that got in the lettering because it had to be done in 30 days for his 2004 show.

Well that thing never went to the printer. I worked my ass off to get it to the artist in time and she damn near broke her wrist drawing it. It's up on my comicspace now. When I was made persona non grata the first time at the MMC I figured it got scuttled, then he came back tried to mend fences and wanted it included in TOTS. I figured that was fine, I wasn't doing anything with it. if it got us some royalties fine, if not whatever.

Now of course that's not going to happen either. Nothing he says ever comes to fruition. He makes unrealistic demands of the people he has doing all the hard work and then drops the ball when everyone else busts their ass to get it done, and gets it there in a timely and professional manner.

Mark my words there will be no MMC '07 which would be convention 3 Rick, not 7. Planning one and putting out press releases do not mean it happened.

bleh.

I'd like to point out that Rick is a classic abusive personality.

His behaviour tends to follow the pattern of:

1) Get into a position of power
2) Pick a scape goat for why something didn't work
3) Blame scape goat, and spread story about why they caused his work to fail.
4) Make amends with scape goat, appologize for things said/done, and graciously 'patch things up' so that said scape goat feels like an ass if they continue to complain.
5) If amends cannot be made, alienate scape goat, and surround oneself with people who will help to alienate scape goat, (either innocently, or through previous dislike of scapegoat. It's good to choose someone who has argued with someone else for your scapegoat.) thusly making each individual screwed feel alone and without recourse. (After all, everyone's on his side.)

What amazes me is Not that it took so long for people to compare notes and figure this out about him, but that it happened at all. Most of the time, if these individuals are somewhat functional, they build themelves a clique, and have the brains to bring in fresh scape goats now and then to alienate.

Of course, no one said Rick had brains.

But he can't handle it. He can't keep track of everything. He borrows from Peter to pay Paul, or rather not, because he can't get the money, but he keeps promising he'll get the money, he'll get the money. Word gets around. His enemies grow. The walls start closing in, and before you know it he's in the window of an abandoned building with a tommy gun making his last stand, yelling "you'll never take me alive, coppers!"

A familiar tragedy, really.

What does it mean to have "leadership inclusion"???

Who talks that way? Who writes that way?

And so, he bought the funeral home with this great plan to make it a haunted house attraction that would be open just over one month a year? How the heck is that financially feasible? It sounded sooooo much like some high-school kid's dream ambition. Except that high-school kids don't buy real estate for pie-in-the-sky activities.

(Truth in advertising moment: I do understand that sometimes grown-ups do make odd purchases for romantic dream reasons. My mom was a trained church musician - and an organist. My dad was not a musician, but he appreciated good music, and talent. One summer, a church in a Detroit suburb was remodeling and getting a new pipe organ, and Dad bought their old organ. The summer was spent disassembling it, and moving the pipes to our house in Jackson. His plan was to reassemble the organ (or at least part of it) in the house so Mom would have her own pipe organ. That's a heck of a romantic gift, heh. He never did get the organ reassembled. And then we moved to Texas a couple of years later, so he sold the pipes and all but the chimes to a pipe organ afficianado in town.)

How do you feel about high-pitched male singers from the 80's arena rock period?

That will tell you everything you need to know. And yeah, it will probably "inspire" you to go walkabout. Not in a good way.

Ok " When You Love a Woman " is just something that would do that. But I always found it to be a touching sweet song. I bet its The Wedding Song for a lot of people. :p

The worst mistake Journey ever made was booting Steve Perry. The guy was freakin awesome as a vocalist. I think he could do arena shows and just hit the entire arena with his voice.

You are an evil, evil man. :)

No, sure, the man could belt out a tune. I won't deny that.

With Smashing Pumpkins , Rage Against the Machine and now The Police re-uniting , why don't the Journey members get their heads outta their asses and bring Perry back ? Imagine if they walked out on the Grammy's ! I'd love to see them back.

I think Journey with Perry could be awesome in any era. They came in in 1996 and kicked ass for a short while.

You have to be careful though... there are basically two varieties of the cinnamon plant, and one is rather toxic for your liver as it contains a substance called cumarin.

Trying to read Olneyese hurts my brain.

You have English Inclusion in a leadership capacity!

Well, the lead singer was just a city boy

Born and raised in South Detroit

He took the midnight train going anywhere

Realize that this is just a joke, but...

Steve Perry is NOT from the Detroit area. In fact, there really is no "South Detroit" -- you know what's south of Detroit? Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

As I've heard the story, Journey once played a gig in Southfield, MI. Which, strangely enough, is just north of Detroit. Anyway, when they were writing the song, they misremembered the name of the place.

Probably an urban legend, but there ya go.

Oh and, er, um, uh, to keep on topic, I'd say Mega-Giganta-Fibber.

And, no, that's not a comment on his waistline. I've got no room to be making potshots.

I had a tremendously bad business year with TightLip Enteratinment in 2004. 'Course, thanks to our Uncle Sam -- That will mean I'll have a great tax year.
As there's no aspect of his business model that would ever make any money, I bet he's cheated on his taxes before. He couldn't have had decent margins on the shows he did hold (he gave away free tables and must have paid out more than came in). And his business model was... giving away comics. How do you make money on that?

TightLip Entertainment was set up to administer to several areas of this hobby and business I've been involved with over the last 13years. 13 years out of a total of 47 years in this hobby is nothing.

I know that there are still areas that NOBODY is concentrating on.

I opened up the educational factor on how this industry looks at, respects, and inter-relates with teachers, parents, and other educators.
Lies.

I helped greatly in introducing the .99 cent comic book concept employed by Marvel, DC, and then a number of other publishers.
More lies.

2005 to 2010 will focus on spotlighting small press AS independent publishers. It doesn't matter what sort of format you use in small press as long as you're being creative and people ARE reading and viewing your efforts. If they ENJOY your creation(s) that's even better.
Again, how is this a business model for a supposed company? How do you make money "spotlighting" other companies' products?

TightLip Entertainment oversees and mangaaes the Mighty Mini-Con (check my sig link). You'll see tremendous changes there in the next 14-16 months. Changes that wil make the common curious person want to explore sequential art and comic books. ALL KINDS OF COMIC BOOKS!
Lies. Unless you count banning everyone.

TightLip doesn't mean lip service.
Yes it does. More lies.

It means not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Stop by the columns section of the MMC and read my column IN A NUTSHELL. It will soon feature an ongoing column on Small Press.
