Dread, thank you. Actually, for some reason I thought that the MA thing went down during the time when you weren't posting much at CBR, so I was sort of giving you a pass. Anyway, I accept your apology and I'll offer one of my own:

I apologize for my earlier comments that smeared the whole Community Forum. I should not have done that, and I regret any hurt I may have caused anyone.

I just told Oz this in PM, and I'll say it here.

I shouldn't post when I'm tired and something annoys me. When I do, I post badly.

The point that I was trying to express, and which I utterly failed to make, is that the Community Board as a group, in my opinoin, has zero moral ground from which to criticize anyone else's behavior. We dogpile on jerks here; they just hang their friends out to twist in the wind. I'm not seeing how that's superior conduct.

I probably did (okay, definitely did) overreact this time. Hell, I overreacted in the CBR memories thread. But, as has been made clear here, everyone thought that I was stewing over a decade-old flamewar. I wasn't. I was stewing about the current mocking presence of one of the instigators of that flamewar and his utter lack of regret or embarrassment for his actions, and the forum's complete acceptance of him without any regard for his prior actions. This time, my anger is not so much directed at my perceived abandonment by my friends, as at the misplaced moral superiority displayed by them.

If YABS is a stain on CBR, it's not the only one. We dogpile on a creep who deserves it; Comm leaves their supposed friends to twist in the wind. So which is better? Add in the fact that there are dogpiles a-plenty on the Comm board, and there doesn't seem to be much in the way of a moral high-horse anywhere around. If the Olney story had surfaced on Comm, this thread would be exactly the same, except that some of the names would be changed and mods would be deleting the excesses.

But that doesn't alleviate me of my responsibility for my words. I apologize once again for unjustly hurting people by smearing the whole group.Wow. A classier, more sincere and heartfelt apology, I've never seen.

I can just imagine the reception he'd get at any major con at this point. Not that I'd want anyone to confront him in any way, but I can't imagine it would be a very cheery reception.

Gail

I would pay his airfare and convention ticket to Wizard World Chicago just to witness said reception.

And that means pays for it in advance. In like, money, and stuff. Gratis.

I can just see him making the rounds through Artist Alley looking for dupes only to be met by the icy death glare daggers.

Or maybe sitting in on the big DC panel when Mark Waid stands to his feet, points a righteous finger at Olney and exclaims...

"You sir, lack the basic humanity God granted all his children. Your soul is tarnished, your honor threadbare, and goodness has fled from your personage long ago! Go! You are cast out from us! Go and darken our fellowship no more!! Go!!"

I've never pretended to be a paragon of virtue. I'm an asshole and well aware of it. I try to keep a lid on it most of the time.

Yeah, my apology was backhanded. One of the things I've learned over the years is, when somebody says they are offended, insulted, or hurt by something, nobody else gets to say whether or not they should feel that way. Nobody else gets to decide whether or how wronged I feel over these things. The fact is I feel that way.

And once again, it's not the actions of MuchMouth and his asshole friends weight years ago that upsets me. It's the actions of people now who make excuses for them and tell me what I should and shouldn't feel.

Are you honestly telling me that you never heard of the Monkey Alliance before MuchMouth showed up to gloat? Nobody ever mentioned the worst flame-attack in CBR history?

Even if it's true that you never heard of it, are you saying that you don't know me well enough to know whether or not I'm making something up?

All I remember is a bunch of people telling me that I was ruining all the fun. Nobody told MuchMouth that he shouldn't have brought it up, or that he might apologize for his abuse, since it clearly still bothered me. No, I was the party pooper. Having a good time is more important than the question of whether somebody thinks an injustice has been done.

Which brings us to the present day. It's apparently still the policy at the Comm forum that calling attention to somebody's rotten actions is worse than those rotten actions. Let 'em get away with anything, as long as you don't bring down the room. Got it.

I've been away for the weekend. Have there been any Olney sitings over the weekend? Has he continued to maintain silence post-serving of papers? Has the name of his alleged legal council been obtained by either JT or Renee?

Nothing further to me other then his last ranting email. Though "the attorney" supposedly has all my contact information, none has been made (attempted?) so far. So... "Alls Quiet on the Wacky Front" would be the best description so far.

Exactly.

And although he had been specifically mentioning MegaCon for this year, I know in the past he's gone to the Comicon in Pittsburgh. And one would think that the New York con would be "reasonable" for him to try to get to.

I remember when I told him I would meet him at the Pittcon to settle up our financial issues... he said at first, he was attending. Then (surprise surprise) he backed out... but he DID tell me later on that he had "people" there keeping an eye on me... to make sure I wasn't breaking his precious NDA. What really stunk was that I had made special arrangements with my regular job to have me in the Pitt area to attend the Con, but if peanut wasn't going to be there, I found no reason to go. I wasn't in the mood to spend money and just walk around with no real direction (or anyone to meet, see, chat with). So I was in the area, but just sat in a hotel room for the weekend, and got some pages done instead. When "he" confronted me about his people "checking me out"... I inquired "what did they report back?"... He said he wasn't at liberty to say... I then said "I'd be amazed if they had anything to say you putz, I didn't bother going".

ahhhhhhhhhh sometimes... I almost nearly miss the idiocy of it all... (mind you I DID say almost and nearly).

I had a lot of dealings with him in my 15 seconds of "non-fame" at Marvel. I liked him. His "online persona" was nothing more than a character, much in the same way a (wait for it ECWSuperfan) a professional wrestler, who for all intents and purposes is a decent person will be a total dick to everyone so there is conflict for the story they're trying to tell.

Bill Jemas knew his role. He was always gonna be the guy who came in and fired guys. He was the asshole. So he took that role in New-Marvel and rolled with it. Quesada was the good guy Editor who had to deal with that wacko Bill Jemas. :p

But guess what....Marvels not been the same since that guy left. Quesada hasn't had the same punch and the comics aren't as daring as people have listed with " Trouble " , " Truth " and the gay Rawhide Kid stories. Theres no sense of breaking all the rules at Marvel to tell good stories anymore. Its now rushed ideas that are half assed to conclusions.

He came into this business and looked at it from "real business" standpoint. The way we do things, and the way we behave are completely different than any other business model. Especially an entertainment model. So this was someone who came in from spending time sailing on the ocean and wanted to have fun playing with radio control boats in a swimming pool.

Bill in Wizard said it best. " I made money whenever I went in a company."

Marvel needed someone who could make $$$$ . Thats why he got the job. And Jemas did that. He knew how to make the BLING BLING pretty much.

Jemas gets rided just like Bob Harras but Harras had pretty much made some awesome decisions as EIC with putting the right creators on books and helping launch Marvel Knights. So Harras may have kicked some old guys to the curb and all , but he really did some great work at Marvel as EIC in his short stint.

Aye, there's the rub. You can't seriously be suggesting that "Trouble " or the Rawhide Kid miniseries in any way resemble good stories.

Breaking the rules to tell good stories is one thing. Breaking the rules to go for shock value and stir up controversy at the expense of the story, well, that's something else again.

I actually liked " Truth " a lot. The Rawhide Kid thing was a controversial story to perhaps lure a fanbase to that character I'm sure and yeah it screams shock value. Same with Trouble as well.

But with what we saw from the X-Franchise & Grant Morrison and other work in that time period, its like Marvel decided to f-ck the rules and do whatever it took. I miss that era. That whole daring to try anything era.

Jann has a secret desire to raise an unholy Alpaca army of the night, I do believe it's a cunning plan to either take Dan's place in a very furry, bloody, coup, or to position herself as a foil for Catwoman.

I like Jann! (And Dan!) both are really nice individuals. Although I have a sneaking suspicion that Jann's a martian. Jann Jones? One well placed apostrophe and we have a Keith Giffen Manhunter love story.

Eh, at this point, if that dumb motherfucker can be happy about anything, it'd have to be something as petty as Internet squabbles. Controversy's pretty much all he has left now, whether it involves him or not.

Nor was that weird book that Jemas allegedly scripted, the title of which escapes me.

Marville.

*shiver* Almost as horrible as Ultimate Adventures.

I have no problem with people claiming Jemas made good business moves for Marvel.

It was his arrogancy and personal insults against anyone (including retailers) that didn't agree with him. Claiming that anyone who didn't see things the same as he did would obviously score low on an I.Q. test.

Then I recently read a brief Q and A with him. When asked what he thought about the current state of DC, his response was, "I don't."

So. Lame.

I apologize once again for unjustly hurting people by smearing the whole group.

OK then, I wrote the above post before I read this. Thanks for that, Mac.

And I'm sorry for reopening old wounds, though apparently I'm the only one still wounded and everyone else has moved on.

I didn't even know about this thread until yesterday and I can't recall even mentioning YABS more than once or twice, much less condemning it.

As someone who went to Amish country in PA this past summer for a holiday (at the urgent request of my spouse), she and I were both taken aback by their not only having websites, but cell phones as well. We went to one of those incredibly touristy buggy ride sites, and there they were, setting up appointments for the day, on cells. Neeedless to say, the "charm" was instantly shattered.

Errr... uhhhh.... (how to tie this in with the main focus of the thread)... I think Chucklehead must have traded in those donated comics for a slew of cell phones, and infested the formerly pure Amish community with another evil of the "English" world. (that should do it)...

Just a couple things...

First, guys, we have to face it. This thread has already developed its own impacted center of gravity, and is pulling the moon slowly towards us, which will doom us all. No amount of late-coming, add-on rules is going to tame this twister. So I'm fine with the thread drift as long as we eventually find our way back to our holy and sacred mission, laughing at a dorkus McGorkus.

I know you don't want to derail things anymore than they already are, but I just wanted to give the basic answer for it. Everyone's decided that sometimes we need to take a tea break to catch our breath inbetween bitching.

Basically just using the anger sparingly. Just like when you're in a room with a group of people discussing something for a lengthy period of time, often people will take side tangents, but eventually they find their way back to the topic at hand.

After all we have to be careful, this thread runs too hot for too long, some of the ladies here might wind up as firey fems with a touch too much. ;)

All of the tangents in this thread are springing off from remarks that may have had some tangental bearing on the topic. Starting a new thread to address an off-topic remark in an on-topic post would be pointless and require some extra effort. The "start new thread" button only appears on the index. When reading a thread, if one wishes to respond to something that's said, there's a "quote" button and a "post reply" button, but no "start new topic quoting this message" button.

But I do think somebody ought to either split the thread or delete all the off-topic stuff.

The thread is going to be what it's going to be. It's just that simple. I'm not going to moderate it, people can say what they like on it, and quite a few folks are having some fun still, which is fine with me and a nice, if unexpected, end result.

If someone wants to do recaps of the important stuff, that's fine, but this thread isn't any different from any other Yabs thread, meaning it's its own creature and I'm not interested in 'steering' it, respectfully.

By the same token, if someone wants to take this cup from my hands and start one of these somewhere else, where it can follow whatever rules that mod believes in, trust me, I'm FINE with that notion.

This is Moby we're talking about; tact ain't got nothing to do with it. I mean, really, would someone with tact complain about how people are talking about him behind his back then create a blog to talk about people behind their backs?

If this weren't so sadly hypocritical, it'd be hysterical.

Ah, but Doc, making the new version of his blog "friends only" lets him hang on to the illusion that he is smart and witty and has a sharp edge to his retorts. Because the only ones who will give him feedback on what he says on the blog will be his syncophants anyway. His fingers have been burned: he's tried to be witty and smart in the public arena, and we turned his words inside out on him, mocked him and made snappy retorts all at the same time. He couldn't cut in on the big kid's playground, so he's gone back to the sandbox.

Just goes to show that he's not the writer he thinks he is. A real writer should have confidence that his writings will stand the test of being pulled at, once they are out in public. If a piece of writing is truly (and consistently) misunderstood, the responsibility for that is the writer's, not the reader's.

That's the thing that amused me about peanut's regular protestations that he was being "misunderstood" and "misrepresented". When many, many people read your words and keep coming up with the same reaction (and it's not the reaction that the writer intended), you can fairly safely assume that there's some flaw in the writing, not the readers. Except that peanut doesn't quite get that -- because in his own mind, he's the tops. Even when better educated folks tell him his writing is incomprehensible.

It's apparently still the policy at the Comm forum that calling attention to somebody's rotten actions is worse than those rotten actions. Let 'em get away with anything, as long as you don't bring down the room. Got it.

That's not just Comm policy, sadly. It's general CBR policy, just like it's okay for someone to lie right and left on CBR, but it's not okay to call a CBR poster a liar, even when they are demonstrably lying.

It's irritating that he's trying to sound magnanimous, but otherwise, I think it's pretty tactful, considering the source. In any case, he's 'giving' you nothing you didn't already own, except proof, should it ever be necessary, that he's got no claim to your work.

It strikes me that he's giving what he was asked for, for once -- an acknowledgement that the contract is indeed terminated.

He was sent a letter terminating the contract. He's acknowledging that it's terminated. "You're free" isn't something that can only be interpreted as "I have magnanimously freed you," but just as easily as "Yes, you are indeed free, as you've said."

I don't see any reason not to bag on him for the stupid or criminal stuff he's done, but in this case, people started by mocking him over a word he didn't even use in the message, but was in Ronee's paraphrase, and then when the actual message was posted, it started all over again with people mocking him for their pretense of what was said rather than what was actually said. But all the message actually did was respond to the termination letter by acknowledging the termination.

Yeah, Blake's free. Is good. Nice to have an acknowledgement of it without waiting the full thirty days.

I tend to agree, as I said. I think it's pretty tactful, considering his previous attempts to threaten to keep clutching onto it through legal means.

Whether he's being careful or he simply realized he had no hold, don't know.

But the ultimate graceful gesture at this point would be to make some sort of payments to those he owes money to, no matter how small.

"Magnanimosity" --- but.... it's so appropriate. I think you coined a word there Kurt, by way of Freudian slip! It's "animosity blown large by ego".

Example: Lex Luthor displays magnanimosity toward Superman.

As for the new... imagery ('cause calling it "artwork" is sort of debatable) from the peanut gallery..... why didn't he just have the kitchen sink thrown in? He seems to have thrown in everything else!

Let's see: heart pierced with dagger & dripping blood (is it better than the dripping... spit from the tongue?); "cutesy" bat wings growing out of the heart; spider web around behind the central heart; skull capping the handle of the dagger; flaming hearts over crossed bones in the lower corners; all on a cheerful spring green background - oh, with a ribbon banner around the central heart with nothing written on it!

Just couldn't settle on one thing, could he?

I idlely indulged for a little bit trying to figure out the implications of all the symbology.... but you know what? Just like his prose, it's not worth it, because it's a mess.

Just.... (I bow to Gail's eloquence) ... eeww.

Yeah, there are a lot of "models" and "Actors" on his page. (and don't judge mine 'cause I know my models lol. :-p Although I do think that's why I get so many of those requests they see the other people on my thing and think I just approve anyone for attention.)

Also there are "users" like "batman" and "powergirl" although knowing him he may think Bruce Wayne actually DOES have a myspace and his request is his way of inviting Rick to join the Justice League.

His codename will be N.D.A.

That was pretty much my feelings about it as well, Kurt. Like I said, I want to, try to think the best of something.I HAVE tried to see the best in everyone INCLUDING him for nearly a year, I am done with that. I defended this man to countless people and put my name up to be associated with his. Excuse me if I mock him a bit now. He does ONE thing that makes a bit of sense and everyone just thinks it is all in the best of intentions, well I don't trust this man as far as I could throw him and everything he says is suspect with me.

It makes you mistrust everything he says, and with good reason.

After reading Mr. Busiek's comments regarding the sincerity and factual nature of Olney's release letter, I felt kinda bad about my pleasure in my agreement with the sentiment that it was written as if a message from a wealthy plantation owner to his last slave. Initially, I *gasped* at the level of arrogance and the delusion of granduer that, I admit, I inferred. Kurt's post made me feel like the short sidekick in A Christmas Story, cheering his befreckled idol on, as the bigger kid whomps away.

Then, I read Matt's post of Rick's MySpace message. Please, someone, make a worthwhile argument that supports the possibility of it not being a so, so thinly veiled threat. I had never actually seen that menacing yet empty two-sentence bit of power-pissing before. Matt, I am amazed at his ability to go from promising legal ramifications in reaction to (not at all) slanderous comments on message boards -to- making chicken-shit, unfulfilled, electronic proposals of violence to your person.

What. An. Ass.

I really don't see myself feeling bad, ever again, for enjoying jokes at his expense.

G'night! The rest of Olney's posts can wait til tomorrow. And, maybe by then, someone will let us know what his myspace post is about. Personally, I'm betting he hasn't learned a damn thing.

~Bev
The process of learning requires that one accept that one is ignorant or in error before the new information can be processed. Dick can't do that. It's a fundamental part of his nature. Asking him to admit ignorance or error, even to himsself, is like asking him to levitate. He can't do it. Ergo, he cannot learn.

I'm astounded that someone so stupid managed to do so much damage for so long. If it weren't for this thread and the efforts of people posting here, who knows how long he might have gone on. I hope he really does face criminal as well as civil charges and I hope he's well and truly put out of the business. Not that he was ever really in the business, unless we're considering con artistry a business, but he needs to be far, far away from...er...everyone.

His MightyMiniCon site still claims he'll be taking ticket orders in March through Paypal. If he's used Paypal in the past to take ticket orders, they might know if he refunded people or not. I know it's a long shot, but I'd hate for him to have gotten away with anything. And, unfortunately, I can see people giving up on getting ticket refunds from him since they don't cost that much. But it would be a tidy "profit" on his end. It also might be mail fraud.

That's good to know. I didn't realize Paypal linked directly to bank accounts, but then, I've never used it. Of course...that assumes he still has a bank account and that he has used Paypal in the past. Judging from the issues around people getting refunds for tables at the non-cons, he at least wasn't using Paypal for those.

Yeesh, give this thing long enough and it will suck in everyone even remotely connected to comics.

Was the guy's name Phil? I am DESPERATELY trying to remember who that was that he stiffed on a big vendor thing and eventually paid back. I keep thinking it's someone I know, I recall them posting on the MMC saying "I got my money, thank you for eventually getting it to me, this will be my first and last post, I just wanted everyone to know I recieved my money"

For the LIFE of me however I could not think of the person's name!!!!

If he did it via paypal, and didn't deliver, people could complain to Paypal and they'd refund the money by withdrawing it right from his bank account.I've had PayPal refuse to give refunds after something like a month or two.

I don't know who designed Rick Olney's "Tightlip" icon, but considering how simple it is, the thing achieves a remarkable level of creepiness.

It looks like one of those CG M&M spokescharacters moonlighting as a porn star.

>Yechhh.<

Aloha,

Scott!

I really don't think you need to disgrace spokescharacters moonlighting as porn stars by relating them to Olney.

I mean, come on: at least porn stars have a good sense of being paid and paying out.

He'd been better using the image of Dick Cheney in a leather thong.

Seriously, don't do that to me.

Seriously. Don't.

In the spirit of transmutation, specifically changing something lousy to something pretty cool:

Today I sent out the check to Doc Absurd to do five book outlines/summaries for me. Mercedes Lackey (Misty) and I are planning new books in two particular series and we want to be sure our continuity's solid. Doc's got the skilz0rz.

Got a box of neat stuff almost packed to go to Doc & his kids, to ungrinch their Olneyed holidays, too; model rockets, dolls and the like. I'll do the same for anyone who had slim holidays because of Olney---just let me know.

Doc Absurd, Mama Absurd & I met because of this thread.

I now quote Doc's favorite new catchphrase:

SUCK IT, OLNEY.

I have to say: You are the coolest couple in the world.

That's so damned nice and so damned good. Wow. You guys rule.

Oh, is that your problem? Never got your free mug, right? I don't have your mailing address. If you cared enough to send it to me in an email or PM I'd mail you one.

Just went over to UNSCREWED, and was looking at the fine work over there and ran across this post. I must have missed it when I got up to go to the can at some point that long evening. Forgive me, the rest of you here, for dragging up a post from that long ago, but some things should be addressed.

Excuse me, mister alleged-Wiccan, but you seemed to have my mailing address long after that fact when you sent me a fricking CHRISTMAS CARD, asking me how the progress was coming on your Spider-Man quilt.

Not to mention that you asked for everyone's address during that long ago SPA chat. Anyone get theirs? Anyone?

No, Rick, that was NOT my big problem with you. Hell, I don't even drink coffee, so who cares if I really ever got a coffee mug? It was your empty promises inviting me as YOUR guest to the now infamous 2004 MMC in June that year. You know, the one where you were going to make sure I got the same treatment as the VIP guests? In retrospect, looks like I did, since it never happened.

Then, promises for the fall show, which collided with another event I attended back then (thank goodness). So, you put me on for the 2005 MMC, same promises, and then I get the email saying at the very last minute that you were pulling out of that show. Empty promises, Rick. All you ever did for me.

If I would've known Olney was Orcafresh I would have jumped into this thread a lot sooner. Not sure if it's been added to Ye Olde List of Douchebaggery, but he said some infuriating things about Native Americans on Comm some years back.

Jeffrey mentioned it. Apparently the threads are long gone, probably from the wipe. It's funny when he thinks it's people believing what others say that turns them against him. When a bunch of people who don't know each other just hear him talk once and all reach the same conclusion.
