Well, one of Rick's biggest braggy boasts turns out to be, as we all suspected, more Olney horseshit.

Man, did he mess with the wrong community. Turns out one of my MySpace friends has worked for LucasFilms and knows the guy who created the Ric Olie character design. He'd never heard of Olney or Orca, flat out. He asked around, NO ONE involved had. They have serious doubts about the free comics story, too, apparently.

Nice one, Rick. Wrong people to try that on, entirely.

Well then...I think I've made my decision...tho' my target audience won't be other people named Kevin, I'll still assume that you speak for the vast majority of people out there. :)

If you're going that route, I suggest you also change your first name to Wha'.

And then there is that idea...now I'm torn...the sexy/mysterious/dare-I-say-tough version or the instantly-ready-for-open-mic-night version...hmmmmm...

My first reaction to the Ric Olie story was "SLBSTM" (Sounds Like Bullshit To Me), but it's nice to have it confirmed.

Hey Shamu! Did you really believe that story, or were you just hoping other people would? Are you crazy or just a liar?

What the --?!? He's using kids with cancer to sell the story?Yeah, it was pretty unbelieveable (http://www.grantbond.com/bulletin/viewtopic.php?t=29&sid=276a6b11bf971c4bbdf6aecbcbf63d0d) for me at first. And it happened kind of funny like, because I had gotten a request to send some comics via my connection then to ORCA (Organized Readers of Comics Associated) from SkyWalker Ranch to a kid's cancer benefit. So after sending out like 3000, I got a thank you letter signed by George that also instructed me to go see the film.

At that time, a friend of mine was also dealing with brain cancer and he was a huge Star Wars and sports figure geek and collector. He really wanted to go to see the film, and his wife and oldest daughter were both nurses ... so the four of us went. Now, I never figured on anything other than maybe a credit in the end film credits. And that would've been cool enough ... but those credits were the smallest and fastest rolling I'd ever seen. So I dismissed the whole matter. My friend, Steve...he died a few weeks later. But we enjoyed that film together and I'm glad to have seen it with him.

Now a bunch of weeks pass... and I'm in Toys R Us looking for a birthday present for my oldest grandson. As I'm like most comic book readers, I walk down through the action figure aisle ... and I'm looking at all the Episode One figures on display. Then I spot it! Looking up I see the starship captain figure that wasn't identified by name in the film. The name "Ric Olie" is just too much a coincidence and then it all comes together. It was George's way of thanking me. Like "Ric Olie" giving young Anakin Skywalker his first flying lesson, I had been giving kids (and kids with cancer via Lucas' charity event) their first comic books. That's what ORCA did. We pumped comics into schools, hospitals, and we created some of the first library outreach efforts to put comics and sequentially driven books on library shelves as early as 1994. Our free comics giving away efforts actually pre-date Diamond's FCBD efforts. And truth further be told, my contacts with Diamond back then heavily touted our efforts with suggestions for getting them to work with us in placing comics even on the slightly damaged, yet readable level, places where ORCA had tread. Then Joe Field and Diamond created FCBD. Were those things related? I don't know. Most of us that worked within ORCA at the time thought so, and it was a good thing.

Anyway, I bought all those "Ric Olie" figures that day. And I later found out from a toy collector/dealer that of the two most rare figures of that film were the "Rick Olie" one and a Queen Amadala figure in some different, more elaborate costume. 'Course, my love of Star Wars and all things George Lucas has never waned.

Thanks for letting me share this here, Grant. It is a pleasure being here on your message board.

He ain't coming back. Real action is coming down on him now. You have people who are passing his information around now and you have people who are covering people's legal expenses (Mark Waid rocks!)...he's too dense to think he's in the wrong here at all. So he either comes on here and begs for mercy or he melts down and makes a bigger ass out of himself, or says nothing. Which at least can't bury him any further.

This has nothing to do with a lawyer. More to do with the fact that he's panicking now. He's screwed himself and everyone connected to him. If he even has a shred of sanity, he'll never come back here except to apologize to everyone he's hurt. And if he's not willing to do that...

I believe he served, But he likes to say he is a veteran who served during Viet Nam. BUT, it looks like if he signed up, it was at the END of the war, and he was never IN Viet Nam. The way he spins things, though, you would think he took out Charlie singlehandedly. I know you don't have to be in war to be a veteran, but I never call myself one. Glad to see the Ric Olie BS finally quashed.
My place as the only comic creator to be referenced in SW canon is secure.

Olney would actually have to be a creator even if the claim were true.

Can I play the dubious connection game?

Spielberg's frequent collaborator Barbara Gerard is my... ah... grandaunt by marriage, thrice removed. He named her after me when I saved seventeen orphan ducks from a burning trash compactor with my jetpack. I'm sane.

Gerard Christopher? The Superboy actor? He... changed his name in honor of me when, at the age of three, I halted a police riot in the outskirts of China by firing twinkees with a slingshot into a pit of alligators. I'm sane.

Wow. It's practically Madlibs.

I got a cool one... My birthday is June 18th. Clark Kent's birthday (distinguished from Superman's -- February 29th) has sometimes been given as June 18th. Bud Collyer, who voiced Superman on the radio, was born June 18th -- as was Paul McCartney. June 18th is Autistic Pride Day.

Obviously, prophecies of my birth led Paul McCartney and Bud Collyer's parents to conceive on a certain date. I make Autistics proud. And Clark Kent is trying to impersonate me. I'm sane.

As for why he's staying silent.... my thoughts....

In the past on the internet, when he's pissed off a community, and been kicked out, he's happily moved on to the next one. I was thinking about why he does this last night on my drive home, and remembered something from Helter Skelter about Charles Manson. DA Bugliosi was told by someone who'd been around the Family that Charlie feeds off fear.

I think Himself feeds off anger. Look at how he loves to provoke people, to get them all riled up. He doesn't mind being kicked out when people do it in a fit of anger -- anger that he continues to feed by making jabs at those folks when he talks of them in other venues. If he knows what pisses you off, he'll press that button every chance he gets. Thus, his always addressing Momma Absurd as "Daph" -- he KNOWS, because she told him, that it pisses her off. She should have punctured that by starting to sign herself "Daffy Daph" just to him. Notice how flat his insults to me have been since I didn't get pissed at the Beach/bitch play -- and instead played off it. I gave him no hold over me.

But there's a big difference in what has happened in this thread. Things have NOT gone "the usual way" here. Instead of the community closing ranks and casting him into the outer darkness, it has OPENED ranks, drawing in more and more people who have been afflicted by him. And people have been comparing notes in depth in a way that has never happened before. In the past, once he was out, the attacked community just moved on, and if he came up the reaction was usually "Ew. That guy. Glad he's gone." A side consequence of this was that his direct victims (those stiffed for money, and personally sluged with his slime) bottled the injury up in silence and tried to move on, because even talking about it felt bad. So they not only did not get paid, but had this garbage festering in them. But here in this thread, they were encouraged to vent it all. And wonder of wonders, they found that not only was the venting good, they were not alone: not alone in being the only one who got suckered by Olney; not alone in being poisoned in psyche by him; not alone in finding support in appreciation of their abilities (which his poison made them think were unworthy). All of this is NOT "the usual course of events."

The banding together took away the fear and anger - at least the stuff he feeds off. The burning fury got directed to positive action. People started mocking him, which definitely undercuts the kind of poison he spreads, because for all his pompous attempts with the language, he's not particularly smart. (Clever, yes, to dupe people for so long, but not smart.) And when even the casual posters here proved to be smarter and wittier than he, it became a losing battle.

He's afraid now. Because the smart people here are proving to be very good detectives, unearthing ALL his crap. And they're finally calling his lawyer bluff, with which he has intimidated far too many people. Not only calling the bluff, but raising him, with real lawyers and legal action. The game suddenly got serious, and it's not so much fun for him anymore.

Eh. It's been an interesting specimen study for me. And I've gained a number of new friends that are way cool. (Oh! And Kevin & Tom! I'm dying of curiousity too. PM, please? :) )

Will he ever post here again? Dinno. His lack of caution is difficult to gage. I don't think we've seen the last of this story. But we've definitely hit a turning point in it. :D

Okay.... enough with the post semi-mortum. :)

Apparently he won't even respond to TV stars:

http://comicsworthreading.com/2006/09/18/mini-con-cancelled/

It is unfortunate what Rick and his family has been through. HOWEVER, he could have gone way of professional etiquette and given some notice that the event was cancelled. Moreover, he could have responded to any of my of my TAPS colleagues emails and voicemails asking what was going on and if the conference was still on. Many of us saved that weekend for his conference, for which he had us sign a contract months before, when we could have made plans to be at other venues OR made plans with OUR families and friends. I tell all of you and would say to Rick himself, that he is unreliable and people should not sign contracts with him, save dates for him, or book plane tickets and buy tickets for his venues, etc.

I know my Star Wars collectibles. I don't adhere to any price guide cuz I collect for the sheer joy of amassing toys, but I know my Star Wars collectibles.

Ric Olie was a peg-warmer, a figure that's usually left behind when the popular ones are well-and-truly sold out. He was never 'rare', never 'hard to find' and most certainly never 'sought after'.

I just did a search on eBay, for shits and giggles. The average starting bid is about a $1.50; shipping is more than the figure. The only expensive one is the MOC figure with the tri-color logo (those sold in Canada) and that's expensive because of the affixed sticker not because of the character. There's 21 figures currently on open bid, and 2 opening offers, for $1.91 on a Spanish chip version and $.30.

That's thirty cents, folks.

Don't rush all once. Supplies aren't limited enough.

Creating Long-Term Benefits...

My last few blogs tended toward being very pessimistic, as I described just a few of the ways in which malicious individual's have attempted to harm me and/or TightLip Entertainment during the past 6 months. I wanted those blog posts to act as a strong forewarning to anyone choosing to enter any kind of business associated or affiliated with the comic book entertainment industry: You need to be aware that there are not only sociopaths out there, but also jealous spiteful people who will work hard to destroy your successes, just to make themselves feel a little better.

So, OK, the world around us is rife with potential predators who would like nothing more than to kill our dreams. That knowledge can be bitter, especially after someone has managed to breach our best defenses and inflicted grievous harm on us. It's happened me a few times since the mid 1980's where comics and their direction is concerned. And it is still, obviously, happening today. Regardless of whether you're in business or simply trying to make your way in the world, however, the key to a successful life is able to rationalize the concept of "two steps forward, one step back." Or... simply be prepared to turn to legal or otherwise avenues of solving your mistaken steps. It is life.

For anyone following my ongoing struggle, please understand that -- I have no problem paying what is owed to those individuals that have not broken their NDA's. I'm only awaiting word of those determinations.

I'm aware that contracts were broken. But everyone was legally contracted of those individuals that worked on TOTS #1. Those individuals that have maintained their professionalism and not allowed themselves to be sucked into this mess will be paid first. Once that takes place, I assume they'll either tell the rest of those involved or primarily be glad that the mess (where their concerned) is over.

Far as the other mean spirited things said here -- Well, we'll see. It is clear to me that several people still have no concept of what has taken place or how it happened ... or even what part they now are being played or playing in it at all. Again, hence the need for legal attention. That isn't a take a cheap shot at Rick Olney thread and walk away untouched. That's all I'm going to say, and that isn't a threat -- But with Mark Waid fronting any and all comers regarding civil suits my way -- take him up on it if you're impatient and lacking understanding.

Just as you can't put the genie back in its bottle, you can't put a broken relationship back together with a simple exchange of monies due. Parties involved have stepped over those lines and it all has to be reckoned with legally. How many more ways can I say this so it is understood?

Wonder if Moby realizes he goaded us into investigating his claims? I knew about this story for 2 years and never thought about it once.

Anyway.

Doing some research on rebelscum.com and found this (http://threads.rebelscum.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=UBB3&Number=1392111&Forum=f3&Words=ric%20olie&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Main=1392111&Search=true&where=bodysub&Name=&daterange=1&newerval=&newertype=&olderval=&oldertype=&bodyprev=#Post1392111).

Apparently Ric Olie is so popular, the figure is still being found on the shelves 9 years later.

Now that is staying power.

My actual birth name is Rick Olney. Through a series of contacts waaaaay back before Star Wars: Episode 1 with the gang at SkyWalker Ranch, I became fortunate enough to have a character, "Ric Olie" named after me.

You'll have to ask George Lucas the rest of the story. :D I'm just very honored to be linked in such a small way to the greatest scientific space fantasy ever created! Thank(s) to my friends at SkyWalker Ranch! I'm looking forward to the next installment!

Best,

That's the nubbin.

Yup, that's the one.
Did he not realize that the image carries (what could be defined as) an anti-Marine sentiment? It's saying that if you're a Marine, your prime objective is to kill. Otherwise it would be "iDefend" or "iProtect" or "iBrave" or somesuch.

It just seems weird for a Marine (which I know people are starting to doubt) to perpetuate that notion. Is it just me, or did he not get the joke?

Heh, heh... too funny. ;D

Hmmm... "gay" marriage, as in the 29years I've spent thus far were not happy ones?

Oh! Oh! Okay, now I get it... No, I'm not an advocate for allowing homosexual and lesbian people to enjoy the "fruits" of what I've had, benefits wise, within my partnership. I know this will offend some people, and I'm sorry... but Corporate America is just looking for another reason to raise my various and many costs of living. So I'm gainst giving them any more of an edge in defining the basics of "marriage."

Plus - I see it as a door opening to allow further acceptances to be lobbied on the American system of laws and governing. People exist in society that would have perversities like beastiality and pedophilia recognized and accepted. How long before those topics get focus by narrow lideral thinking? <he politely states, as stepping behind his rotten fruit shield>

Yeah, I sort of always felt like the bastard grampa of that FCBD stuff. I know Joe Field got it all rolling, but I began ORCA back in 1993 giving comic books away (comic books of ALL kinds to ALL kinds of readers), and I wrote thousands of letters each month to retailers all across the country and up into Canada promoting ORCA, reading, and our free comic book give-away stuff.
Never meaning to steal Joe Field's thunder... I also wrote on many an instance to Diamond and Gemstone, Wizard and all the present day of that time (now gone) fanzines. Yeah, me... still trying to help where I can. I placed my "Comics in the Classroom" concept in CrossGen's hands and after some co-working together...they crafted their BRIDGES program. I didn't care because it worked great for me to direct parents, teachers, and librarians to it.

Don't mean to blow my own horn or sound like I'm ranting... I could walk away from all this at any time, because it only seems to take from me, but I can't because to many of my group members depend on me. Besides the fcat that I really enjoy various facets of this all ... like plugging Billy's stuff whenever the opportunity presents itself.

ORCA has placed comic books (and GN's) in libraries and schools during its existence. Strangely, it was long before anyone else got recognized credit for it. Many a younger reader now in their mid-20's has learned from my group and peers. I can't help it if people are so blind they can't see...

Those "last few blogs" he mentions? He deleted them. And not because they were "pessimistic". They were bitter and insulting toward a number of folks. And "sociopaths" is, I believe liked to Mike Netzer's open letter to him, and "jealous spiteful people" references Gail. Heh.

It is life.

"Potential predators who would like nothing more than to kill our dreams." Which he has a dispicable history of attempting, by making people feel bad about the quality of the work he doesn' pay them for. Poison.

For anyone following my ongoing struggle, please understand that -- I have no problem paying what is owed to those individuals that have not broken their NDA's. I'm only awaiting word of those determinations.

Yeah, he's struggling really hard. Right. Sooooo fiercely.

"Everyone was legally contracted of those individuals that worked....." Huh? My head hurts. What is that that is passing as grammar there?

Far as the other mean spirited things said here -- Well, we'll see. It is clear to me that several people still have no concept of what has taken place or how it happened ... or even what part they now are being played or playing in it at all. Again, hence the need for legal attention. That isn't a take a cheap shot at Rick Olney thread and walk away untouched. That's all I'm going to say, and that isn't a threat -- But with Mark Waid fronting any and all comers regarding civil suits my way -- take him up on it if you're impatient and lacking understanding.

It amuses me that he doesn't really deny the "mean spirited things" said of him. Just "We'll see." Ah, peanut.... is anyone speaking up and testifying to the quality of your character? Please, I'd be interested in at least hearing from such.

Just as you can't put the genie back in its bottle, you can't put a broken relationship back together with a simple exchange of monies due. Parties involved have stepped over those lines and it all has to be reckoned with legally. How many more ways can I say this so it is understood?

That last little joyful note there, so charming, don't you think? Especially since it doesn't seem that anyone really wants to put their relationship "back together" with him. They just want their monies. "Stepped over those lines"... which lines? Breaking relationships that weren't really relationships? Exchanging monies (which hasn't happened anyway)? Ah, one could have quite a lot of fun pulling apart this facsimile of prose.

I don't have a mySpace account. And I wouldn't give him the gratification of responding there anyway. That would be playing to his audience. And why would I want that?

Hey ho.

For the period (Vietnam era), that is indeed what it means. But only 4 months? Unless he was there in '75 during the Fall of Saigon, 4 months is a heck of a short tour to 'Nam. Unless he was indeed injured there. But, I admit, that's just my reaction - I don't know for sure.

Hey, I'll admit it -- I miss CrossGen a lot. Imploding business practices aside, they made some damn good comics. (Ruse was, for a time, my hands-down favorite comic book on the stands.)

Wow, what an asshole thing to say about all those people who were shafted by Alessi.

Hell yeah. Ian Edgington has said he almost lost his house because of Alessi's bastardy and only made it out because of, IIRC, 2000AD unexpectedly picking up some pitches. As he's said, why be loyal to someone buggering you financially?

Yeah... I primarily got into CG through those funky compilation books they put out.

Business issues aside, there were some damn good books coming out of there, and even the weaker ones but god DAMN were they pretty. I was never a major fan, but I did enjoy reading their output.

And then they Olneyed. How sad.

I was a major fan. I really wish Disney would DO something with the properties since they bought 'em out. It's great Checkers (is that the name of the company) is going to start reprinting some of the CrossGen books. It'd be better if they made some new volumes. It'd be FANTASTIC if the guys who made the books in the first place were getting a piece of the action.

General / The World We Live In / Re: GAY MARRIAGE - Any thoughts? on: Tue, August 10, 2004, 10:43:18
Heh, heh... too funny. ;D

That's interesting.

I'm not finding any Richard Olney in Mohawk, NY under that age. There's a Richard M. Olney in his 70s.

In fact, doing a state-wide search on Richard Olney doesn't give me anyone at that age. They are either much older or much younger.

All of the Domains are registered to "Rick Olney."

That doesn't really help much as once a domain is registered you can change the DNS info to whatever you want.

But I have to think either his legal name is Rick or Rick isn't short for Richard.

ORCA has placed comic books (and GN's) in libraries and schools during its existence. Strangely, it was long before anyone else got recognized credit for it. Many a younger reader now in their mid-20's has learned from my group and peers. I can't help it if people are so blind they can't see...

And what an excuse for him for not writing checks. "Well... I have to convince the wife to write it." Like to see him explaining a check for a few thousand dollars to her.

I mean, any woman working full time with a teenager (I think they still have one son at home, don't they?) in the house... isn't going to be too keen on the idea of writing checks to people she didn't know her husband owed money too.

This is not going to be pretty. But it will be just.
