I think we've finished off the NDA excuse for good, Jamie... Yes, the end....

#43091, 43092 – Doc Absurd raises the issue that Olney had not signed and notarised the NDA’s he sent him, and that Olney may not have signed and notarised any of the NDAs; Tom Stillwell confirms an NDA would need to be signed (on paper or electronically) by both sides to be enforceable, so the NDA’s are null and void

THE FINAL END

-

#43094 – OzBat believes Olney didn’t have the ability to pay Wil at Christmas 06, and just wanted to make himself look powerful

#43106 – Olney blog post screencap: he copies and pastes the definition of cyber-stalking onto his blog [he has done most of the things it lists]; he claims he decided recently “to get back to my realistic goals of self publishing, offering my yearly comics event”, and supporting young readers “via my affiliation with the well known and respected [ORCA]” [this makes it sound like the group isn’t run by him]; he claims the MMC will be back in 2009 under a new name [it wasn’t]; he’ll be legally “confronting the cyber-stalkers and unprofessional comics industry people this year” [he didn’t], and soon start putting the “rumors” to rest

#43119 – the photo on Olney’s blog post was from “last year's [YABS?] CAPE dinner”, and Olney is using it without permission

O.o.o.p.s.

You just used a mixed metaphor I think. Olney, and decency.

BTW.. where do I get my O.o.o.p.s. membership card.

I remember when the Jack Skellington pictures were first posted, I thought Scott's expression to be rather mild.

Of course, that was before I'd actually MET Scott. Now that I've met him a few times, and gotten to know his very sociable nature -- Yeah, that's a very strong expression for him, very much on the order of "What planet did YOU fall off of?"

#42863 – extra screencaps of the last two, and one on “the origin of ORCA”:
- He states that the original West Utica Comic Book Club was him and nine kids interested in comics, who’d all met at a garage sale; he says that soon the kids took their parents to the meetings, and that “this effort” was highly appreciated & well known in Utica “and has been for a solid previous 15 years”

So what did RO do before 1993?, I mean was he involved in ANYTHING in comics? I mean those of us near his age have SOME sort of history in comics. He's never mentioned going to any comic cons in the 70's or 80's.
There were other questions about that "origin" but it is the holidays so will not ask.

I'm running into the back of my own past logging!

#43066 – further Wil/Olney exchanges:
- Wil did not receive money from Olney, and on the 27th December 06 sent a brief email saying, “I hope you had a nice Christmas... Because I didn’t”; Olney responded with “Mine was spent without my mom, mother-in-law, and my goddaughter who was also my niece. So it was a stressful time when my mind wandered looking for safe haven within itself, what with TightLip Entertainment's woes.”
- Olney states legal headway is being made over Tales of the Spooky, that he is not alone in sorting this out at his end, and that Dave Lanphear “isn’t blamed at this point”; “hopefully you'll have a firm check release date in 24-48 hours”
- Wil requests that if he and his team aren’t paid by 31 January 2007, Olney returns the copyright of their work to them; he states that since he has no contract and hasn’t been paid, he can claim copyright anyway but would prefer an amicable agreement
- Olney attacks Wil for not “let[ting] the legal process take its course”, says his attorney has been made aware of Wil’s email; he refuses to return copyright – Wil says that he’ll have to get his lawyer to look into it if he’s not paid; Olney responds “you're now stating as a mater of fact, I assume, that you have no contract. That very matter is what is being looked at presently”

#43067 – Wil states that his emails were used by Scott Reed in his successful lawsuit against Olney

#43069 – Wil states he’d still be quiet about Olney today if Gail Simone and Chuck Dixon hadn’t gone public

#43070 – Danny Donovan states Wil’s email exchange reminds him “of my discussions with [Olney] while I was trying to pay for my late step-father's cancer treatments”; “It's funny how much he touts his connection to Brian Hannois, from Ghost Hunters, as Brian thinks he's a nutjob and wants nothing to do with him”

#43077 – Tom Stillwell points out that if Olney had an attorney, Wil Radcliffe would have received a “nasty-gram” from the attorney instead of Olney threatening him

#43083, 43084 – email exchange with Wil and Olney from January 07, after Wil posted on CBR: Olney states he won’t pay Wil unless he makes a public apology, and claims he’s sent several cheques to people who didn’t break their NDAs – when Wil says he’s reclaiming copyright, Olney says “you have NO copyright” and guilt-trips Wil by saying he’s “cut the throat” of his story-partners; at the same time, Olney was guilt-tripping one of those partners (who also wanted to reclaim copyright) by saying they were cutting Wil’s throat

#43087 – Olney mass-deletes his blog posts again

Ya have to love Olney logic here. He completely fucks the guy over. And basically does it for months on end , ruins his Christmas ....but its Rick who suffers . He then demands the guy give him a public apology for not liking being fucked over.

Just complete outragous fucking behavior from an idiot.

Apparently nothing. Maybe he only bothers to count stuff he ran.

What I didn't log is that Wil actually apologised for bringing up not being paid when Olney mentioned all his dead relatives.

Because Wil is a good man.

The log reached 300 pages - I change the font to 11, and down it goes to a less horrifying 258.

Well, relatively less horrifying.

As for the thread itself, 25 pages of it to go and EVERYTHING OLD IS LOGGED. The end is in sight!

Hmm seems like he was around ..or at least he says so in the following to me for my Fandom History Section:

I was there at the very start. I wandered New York City looking for old book stores and scrounge shops to buy up back issues. I went to the cons hosted by Phil Seuling. Back in the 1970s, there were frequent notices in Marvel Comics' Bullpen Bulletins about their softball team. They'd talk about the games, mention them when talking about specific staffers, etc. It sounded like they were having a lot of fun, despite not winning a lot of games. I was on the phone with a friend talking about that and we thought it'd be a great idea to have a team of comic book fans to play against them. Fans vs. Pros! What great copy! But we knew we'd need a sponsor. One name came to both of us immediately: Phil Seuling. Besides having a fannish personality, Phil was the man who made comic conventions what they are today. Fans have almost canonized him since he passed away; I could easily do an entire article just on Phil..

Phil Seuling put on these great little weekend shows with no guests, but his best known event was his huge July 4th conventions, but those monthly cons without guests, just dealers and fans (called Second Sunday, then renamed to Comic Book Marketplace) were superb!

Then Stan Lee came into my life as a fan. Do you know that I believe I STILL maintain the record of most interviews with Stan Lee? And I discount and exclude Mark Evanier. Heh, heh... He's a pro.

Stan Lee, one of the men who started Marvel Comics. One of the men who created all those great characters and stories. Stan still had an active role in the company back then, was still writing. He didn't always attend the cons. I was at the Seuling con where Vaughn Bode drew what would be his last poster, and meeting for the first time people I had only corresponded with, among other things.) Bode, by the way, was origianlly from Utica, New York. I recalled meeting him back in the late 1960s before I was legal for the draft.

That was Vaughn Bode's last convention. Wow! The next time I'd see him was in meeting his son, now grown, and doing a stint at Kevin Eastman's WORDS & PICTURES Museum. ORCA was a organizational member of the museum and we'd take groups of our members from upstate NY to the museum in Northhampton, MA., which seeing Mark, in my mind, was like seeing Vaughn.

"Memories."

I visited Marvel nearly every trip to NYC back then. Also had contacts and friends at Warren Publishing (the publisher of Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella and Famous Monsters - Nick Cuti, who probably has forgotten me.

A few years later I became friends with Archie Goodwin. Saw Archie at Marvel twice before he left for DC Comics. I used to hang out a little at the Spring St. comic shop, I would have been soooooooooo depressed back then to find it closed. Thank you for asking. It brought back many memories."

In closing, fans and kids today are ROBBED of having things like this to enjoy. So, yeah, I advocate for younger readers and take a lot of crap for it.

My small press memories are nearly all connected to my exeriences, stange as they were, with Bob Elinskas and his little collective of tenny bopper self creative types back then. It wasn't until I founded the ORComx APA that I really found my creative side. That exists today. Ever see an issue?

GAWD! I just had a memory flashback of Mark Gruenwald.
Ha!Ha! Nobody like that in comics anymore...

He blossomed with the internet.

Rick Olney is a coward in every sense of the word.

He wouldn't have been able do what he does to people in person as he lacks the balls. He's an asshole off the net too but he's too much of a coward to assert that aspect in any way that matters.

The net allows him to act on all the baser instincts he dare not display to those that know him in real life. The web allows him to truly be who he is: a craven bully with delusions of grandeur.

The following are some excerpts from the blog my wife is keeping. This will give you a better idea of what is going on. Please keep Alana in you prayers.

Sunday, November 22, 2009 3:03 PM, EST
Once again, we have to take several steps back. I arrived this morning to a very sick little girl. I am so blown away but what I am seeing and why this keeps happening. My eyes are still on the Lord. We have to keep trusting Him. We do not understand any of this, but both my husband and myself will trust in the Lord.

Alana is acting like she is septic again. She spiked a fever around 5:00am. The nurse gave her Tylenol. Since then there has been no more fever. She is very puffy all over and her belly is quite distended.

The sad news about her belly being distended is that is her incision sight opened up. All the stitched ripped opened exposing her insides again. I saw that this morning and was very disheartened by the sight. I can't believe the damage in just one weeks time. When I left for home last Sunday the incision sight was intact. A week later and it's wide open.

Her labs are not as bad considering there is something serious going on. Her white count is going up which probably indicates an infection somewhere in the body. Her liver numbers are fine, surprisingly. Alana's lactic levels are of great concern. That level is supposed to be between 1-0.5mmol/L. Right now her level is above 7 which means she is very sick. Usually when one has a very serious illness it can cause inadequate tissue oxygenation which makes the lactic levels rise. She is at a dangerous point right now.

Alana will be going for a CAT scan anytime today. Her surgeon wants to see what is going on in the belly. If it is a perforated bowel or an abcess or other serious findings she will need to go back into surgery immediately.

Please, please pray for God's grace on Alana. I have no more words to say anymore. All I can do is plead with God to spare our little girl.

God is good.

Monday, November 23, 2009 10:08 AM, EST
I have a little bit of good news to start off this entry. Alana's CAT scan was clear of any abdominal issues. No problems there. That was a great relief to all involved in her care. To me as her mother that was the best news of the day yesterday. No surgery is required.

What the CAT scan did show was possible pnemonia. It was a little hard to tell. Alana's surgeon believes that it is pnemonia. This is probably why she has been requiring the ventilator more in the last few days. Right now she is completely back on the ventilator.

The other issue that is causing her to be quite sick, is that she has an infection in her blood. We don't know the exact bacteria yet. The culture is still growing. Once the bacteria is identified, the right antibiotic can be administered to Alana. Because of this infection her subclavian line had to be pulled. This is a line the goes deep in a vein beneath her clavical. The doctors believe this is where the infection in her blood came from. Right now she has two peripheral lines in. These are just lines placed in a vein just underneath the skin. She will also be getting an arterial line put in which is usually in the wrist. This line is used for blood draws, monitoring blood pressure and giving meds. She has had a few of these placed since Sept.

She is doing a little better this morning compared to last night. Her vital signs are stable this morning. There has been no fevers since 5am yesterday morning.

Despite the severe edema, Alana is holding steady. The doctors are going to work on getting this fluid off. Her surgeon was telling me this morning that he sees this a lot in patients, this edema. When a patient has a serious infection the network of blood vessels start leaking into the tissues of the body. The doctors often call this "third spacing". In Alana's cause it is worse because she does not have the best renal(kidney) function and she has a bad liver. It is difficult to balance in the "in's and out's" of fluid with her.

Hopefully, by the end of the day we will start to see more marked improvement. She can still respond to what is being asked of her. She is also quite fiesty, which is a good sign.

Please continue to pray for God's grace. He is her "great physician". Man can only do so much, but God can do it all.

God is good.

Tuesday, November 24, 2009 4:54 PM, EST
Alana is in the operating room right now. Her surgeon wants to get a better look at her open wound. It has been bleeding and oozing around the edges of the wound. They will attempt to stop most of the bleeds.

Everything else is as good as it can be. She is definately feeling a little better. Alana is being very contrary today doing a lot of fussing when the nurses or doctors have to do something to her. These are all good signs believe it or not.

The edema that she has going on has gone down a little. The good thing is she has started to void much more since this morning. Now, we get to watch her "deflate".

Her labs are looking much better. Everyday this area has been improving. She had another blood culture drawn today to see if the infection is gone. We are praying it is. Her lactic levels are between 4 and 5. This is an improvement. It did get up to 8, which is bad. It needs to get down to at least 1.

I will be taking a bus home tomorrow night to be home with my other children and husband on Thanksgiving. On Friday I will be back for the day. There are many things going on with the other children this weekend.

I am so thankful for the Childlife Department
here at Mt. Sinai. When I am not here and even when I am here they entertain Alana all day. Angie, her Childlife person has made up a schedule for Alana. That has worked out wonderful. She has art therapy, music therapy, story readers and many other people come visit just to be with her. She is well taken care of. It makes me feel better when I do have to leave.

Thank you all for your prayers. I will let you know tomorrow how she did in the O.R.

God is good.

Wednesday, November 25, 2009 10:06 AM, EST
Alana did well in the O.R. Her surgeon and the plastic surgeon cleaned the wound. What they found was exposed bowel again, and part of her liver was exposed. This obviously is not good.

What they have decided to do is use a synthetic material called "Integra" to patch up the open wound. Alana has nothing left of her own abdominal skin to close her exposed belly. The Integra will be sown to the edges of her wounds. In a few weeks, if all goes well she will go back to the O.R. and have to first layer of the Integra peeled off. This layer is more of a protective layer. The plastic surgeon will then do a skin graft to cover the layer that has grown into her belly.

The Integra was not available yesterday. If it was the plastic surgeon would have done it yesterday. He did get right on the phone and called a representative to get the Integra stat. I prayed last night that it would come in for today. Lo and behold, it is on its way to the hospital. Big blessing!! The surgery will be done today.

Alana is doing well through all of this. They have her completely sedated. They want to make sure no more damage comes to the open wound till the Integra is placed. Her vitals are strong. She is looking more like herself. There is still quite a bit of fluid on her but it is much better.

Before we knew that the Integra had come in, I was speaking with the PICU attending and she was saying that she hopes the Integra comes in today. She said to me, "Alana needs something to go her way for once." About 3 minutes after that comment here comes one of the plastic surgeons with the good news. In my heart I was saying the same thing. "Please God, give Alana a break."

Once again, God had this all planned out. He is listening and knows. Trust, trust, trust Him!!!

Keep her in your prayers today that all goes well with the surgery.

God is good.

For someone that involved in Fandom as he claims, he sure kept himself under the radar till the 90's which seems to go against his personality.

Yeah, that is odd. Tom's probably right about the Internet being a boon to Olney, but surely he'd have done something before 1993 - not even something scammy, maybe he just made a lot of noise and tried to get in on projects for ego reasons. Doing absolutely nothing pre-93, he can't be THAT cowardly, can he?

Mrs. Olney has a job and pays the rent and feeds the sofa-slug. He has nothing.

His lice have since complained re your cruel remark.

#43132 – Matt Doc Martin offers to make his contact details public if Olney reveals his attorney’s details, or if Olney’s attorney contacts anyone from CBR

#43137 – Olney has deleted the posts in #43034; Matt Algren finds where Olney pinched the Cyber-Stalking list from (#43106)

#43153 – Joanne Mutch posts email excerpts from Holly Campbell the model (#28220, #28249), stating Olney “tried sleeping with me from the beginning”, never paid the photographer and tried to get her to move closer to him

#43154 – screencap of a new Olney blog post: first part is a The Dark Knight review:
- he then talks about small press comics, mentioning the small press “has its own ruling class and whorish ideals… people that hold small press back”, and claiming there are people that moved on from small press and “disassociated themselves” from it, but says he’ll name no names
- “There isn’t a small press collective existing that actually supports small press creators properly. Nope, nothing… yet.” [implication he intends to start one; he didn’t]
- Talks about the fragility of life and how difficult he’s had things, and how “I’ve done stupid things to hurt less”; says people who can’t understand that are cluttering up the comic “hobby (or worse still, business)”, “impeding the healing with the hate”
- Again refers to Unscrewed as an “online hate group”, uses their mascot drawing; again claims he’s consulted a lawyer, and will take legal action “shortly”, and claims “nobody [else] appears to have had their words or actions evaluated by a legal professional”; claims he’s “innocent until proven guilty”

#43158 – Stressfactor points out Olney has lost court cases, and therefore has been proven guilty

#43164, 43167 – MacQuarrie states Olney is getting a cease and desist and Blogger is getting a copyright violation report over the unauthorised use of Unscrewed’s image; he later posts a copy of the C&D email he sent

#43174 – Scott Reed states his words and actions were evaluated by an attorney and a judge, as part of his court case

I'm not a big Maggie G fan, looks-wise. So I'm wondering who it was in the film that Rick thought was a Luscious Fox.

I want to know what wiring Gotham to "mass ease drop" is. Is it where everyone in Gotham suddenly sits down in a La-Z-Boy?

Oh crap, I found out I have MORE pages left to log than I thought! I WILL NEVER BE FREE!

#43203, 43204 – Olney has added a copyright line to the Unscrewed art he’s using, appearing to believe this protects him; MacQuarrie restates to Olney that he needs to take it down; states Olney “acknowledged receipt of that [C&D] notice by replying to my email”, with that reply being “sending a link to something at his photobucket account”; MacQuarrie states he’ll be sending court papers next

#43206 – Olney takes the art down

#43214 – when MacQuarrie posted details on how to file a copyright complaint (against Olney) with Google, Olney quoted the whole post on his blog “under the heading "Wha!? HUH?!??" and then promptly removed it”

#43218 – screencap of an Olny blog post: Olney shows a defaced photo of his deceased mother [it’s not said whether he was sent it or found it]; he claims this is “a sampling of [CBR’s] work” [it was not posted on the CBR thread], that things like this are done “in the name of Unscrewed”, and that Lance Boucher “advocates things [like this]”

#43219, 43222 – Stressfactor and Cliff Cluniak condemn the defacing; Stressfactor points out “WE have no proof that anyone on YABS or anyone involved with UNSCREWED was responsible”, and Cliff notes we have only Olney’s word that someone sent it to Olney and he didn’t do it himself

#43226 – Linkara states “It wouldn't surprise me if he had doctored the image himself [to frame CBR], but I'm inclined to believe this is just some well-meaning but rather stupid individual that's responsible”

#43228 – Gail Simone states “this picture is so far over the line that it can't even SEE the line any more… I would be tremendously disappointed in anyone who sunk to that level”

The first post here would've settled the matter of Olney's service record.... except Olney just wouldn't stop fucking lying.

#43231 – MacQuarrie has had the jargon in Olney’s service record (#24073) translated:
- Olney isn’t a Vietnam service vet, had limited overseas duties, served in a support role, and only has the “the standard "I Was There"” awards and commemorations; he did make E4 rank in 13 months, “which in the USMC is called Corporal and is an NCO rating” (MacQuarrie’s contact made E4 in the Army, though it wasn’t Corporal rank there); he wasn’t an MP (and MacQuarrie’s contact believes the Marines don’t have Military Police but something else)
- He was AWOL for a week near the end of his service, reasons unknown, though not court martialed for it (possibly because he was nearly finished and it’d be easier & cheaper at the time to just let him leave);
- He did a standard “2 or 3 year active tour”, and by six years service he refers to the then-standard six year enlistment contract (including inactive reserve)
- “Summation: Nothing to be ashamed of, but no John Wayne, either.”

#43241 – Sarah Beach remembers Olney posting a story “on MySpace back when, about overstaying an authorized sick leave absence by a week, sneaking back to base without papers, and getting busted down”; “I was much more struck by his glee at being so clever as to be AWOL and "out smarting" the authorities”

#43242 – screencap of an Olney blog post: photo of Olney flipping the camera off, “For the YABS Schlubs and Gail She Moans”

#43255 – Bert believes Olney defaced the photo himself due to a misspelling on it

#43258 – screencap of an Olney blog post, responding to #43231 and #43241:
- Olney claims the service record MacQuarrie has must be a fake (he’s claimed this before) as otherwise “you’d know more about where I served and why” (we know he was in the Pacific, #42653, #42663); he again claims he had two Meritorious Masts [not on the record], that he was passed over for “E5 (Sgt)” twice and refused it a third time, that he received formal NCO training in Okinawa; he claims he was in sent to “several other countries in that part of the world to retrieve military prisoners” [he was a supply clerk and later in catering]
- Olney again claims he was an MP, and also that he was “an international chaserr” [sic], and as a Chaser he had “the same rights as civilian police officers only on a military Federal level” [neither are on his record]; claims he served four years active service
- He seems to confuse MacQuarrie’s contact with MacQuarrie himself, accusing him of badly treating “a fellow Veteran” [Olney has scammed fellow veteran Cesar Feliciano]; “Know this, MacQuarie [sic] – should you and I ever cross paths in person… I fully intend on ripping your head off and shitting down your neck”
- Olney claims he was never AWOL, just sick [he’s claimed he overstayed sick leave before, #43241], and that he never said he was busted in rank, and “I was NEVER busted in rank” [his record shows he was moved from supply clerk to catering, #42653, #42663]

#43274 – Matt Algren notes that MacQuarrie posted #43231 to settle the issue of Olney’s record, so it could be left alone; by posting, Olney’s just kept attention on it and his lies

The letter Z, and Zorro are cool. But like all things, z should be used in moderation. Zorro only left his 'z' mark for dramatic effect; if he put it on everything, who'd care?

"Senior! Look! On your coffee mug! The Mark of Zorro!"

"I cringe in fear!"

"Really?"

"..... no, not really."

"It's also over here on the mohogany sideboard, this mirror, every page of my stationery set, and this stuffed canary my wife got from the flea market down the street..."

"He IS a bit annoying like that, isn't he?"

#43296 – Sarah Beach believes Olney created the defaced photo (#43218) as he doesn’t state where it came from or name the culprit, and because she finds it strange he’d put a defaced photo on his own mother on his blog instead of just mentioning it if it upsets him so much

#43298 – DocAbsurd responds to Olney’s attack on Lance Boucher, states Lance “kept cutting you slack” until 2007

#43300 – OzBat googles for the defaced photo “and can't find it online anywhere”

#43307 – two new Olney blog posts, 31 July 2008:
- Olney now states that the photo originated from a “Gene Dean”, who emailed it to Dennis Kininger (who forwarded it to Olney); he accuses “Gene” of “no doubt” being a CBR member; he states the police are looking into the matter
- Olney quotes the email from Gene, which acts like Dennis is a co-conspirator disgruntled with Olney and that they’ve talked before [though Olney doesn’t touch on that]; Gene says he’ll “plant it over a likely spot for [Olney] to find and have him go ballistic” [it wasn’t planted as far as we know though]
- Olney also states he has handed “EVERYTHING” to the police, “every bit of libel and my emails to assholes (like Matt Doc Martin) and others that like to pull my chain” [nobody was ever contacted]
- Again threatens upcoming legal action and physical violence if he sees anyone at a convention; he later says he won’t threaten violence; accuses Danny Donovan and other CBR posters of calling him a paedophile [Danny called him a “chicken-hawk”, referring to Olney’s military rants; others called him “old bear” because he titled himself that on a MySpace blog]; claims he corresponds with Marine friends of Sergeant Elisha R Parker [who he claimed he’d do an auction in honour of, #42995]
- Olney boasts about having “the very BEST cable” and unlimited calling, and that he spent over $1000 “this month on office and comics” [yet hasn’t paid anyone the money he owes]
- Claims CBR and Unscrewed don’t want anyone to get paid because “then you’d have no meal ticket”, believing CBR gets ad revenue from the thread somehow [it doesn’t]
- He then claims he’s heading away for the weekend from “tomorrow morning” [posted at 1.54 AM, July 31]
- Olney quotes NY state law that criminalises “the name, portrait or picture of any living person” for any advertising or trade purposes

#43309 – OzBat points out Olney still has images of Melissa Reed up

#43317 – OzBat challenges Olney to show where his name, portrait, or picture is being used for advertising or trade purposes

#43318 – KJ_81 notes Dennis Kininger received the photo, points out “Surely it's a very short list of people who have contact details for Dennis?”

#43325 – Matt Doc Martin notes Olney has told him to stop emailing him; Matt Doc says he can’t remember the last time he did email Olney

#43329 – Charles RB notes that if Olney’s spending claims are accurate, he’s spending $12,000 a year on comics and “office”, and therefore can pay the people he owes easily

#43353 – screencap of #43307

#43362 – Scott Reed raises issue of Olney actually getting someone to carry out physical violence against people, due to his previous acts and people he has associated with

He always seems to freak out when people say he's broke, even though that was the excuse he's used for years when cheating everyone he's ever worked with.

Charles RB
11-26-2009, 12:03 PM
I AM CLEARLY FUCKING BORED. :frown:

#43375, 433379 – MacQuarrie states he will be calling the police about Olney’s threat; “while I don't consider him a genuine threat to me [due to distance]… I'm concerned that he might get violent with someone in his vicinity”

#43381 – Scott Reed points out that shortly after he reported Olney to the police (over the threats against Melissa), “he dropped off the face of the internet for nearly a year”

#43382, 43383 – Olney posts on his blog again, despite having claimed he’d be away for the weekend and taking a break from the blog; he claims this is a “break”, but the size of the post shows it took a long time; the post is screencapped:
- Olney claims many people have Dennis Kininger’s email; also claims he has never screwed “anyone associated or affiliated with ORCA” [he has]
- He claims nobody was scammed and everything was done with a contract [he claimed Scott Reed had no contract, #41867; never had Wil Radcliffe sign a contract, #41635, and never had one with Ronee because he said they didn’t need one, #82; and the MMC website columnists had no contracts, #3354]
- He claims the family deaths “derailed my cash flow”, doesn’t specify how
- Responds to Matt Doc Martin (#43325) by showing Matt did email him recently, on 16th July 2008; he claims the email has been handed to the police [the email is Matt telling him to take down Melissa’s photo, and refers to Olney’s threats; this would be odd to hand to the police]
- He states “it isn’t against the law to do what you’re all doing to me now”, despite having claimed before that it was and claiming that he contacted the police; “it also isn’t against the law to spend MY money where and how I see fit” [he has court judgements against him]; claims he’s been to Florida “twice” since “this mess” started between him and Scott Reed
- Olney claims “my youngest son and my family were ‘stalked’ at one of his high school drama plays back earlier this year” by a couple; he implies this is related to CBR/Unscrewed, and says they got the license plate of the couple’s car and gave it to “a friend of mine” in the police; claims his family have received threats
- Insults Gail, Scott Reed, Danny Donovan, and OzBat again; threatens he’ll “share” the work Scott did for him, implying it’s shoddy [he would still have to pay though]; again threatens MacQuarrie

#43388 – MacQuarrie points out that, based on Olney’s description of the ‘stalkers’ and their actions [taking photos], they could have beeen “relatives of somebody else in the show”; points out to Olney “You threatened me, and I am on record here repeatedly urging people to not make threats, not insult your family, not engage in infantile behavior toward your wife and kids… you can explain that to the police”

#43390 – Sarah Beach notes Olney claims he’s “mobile”, notes that implies he can afford a laptop and mobile access card, but isn’t paying people

#43405 – Matt Doc says that Olney reported him to PayPal “recently for the time back in April where I was raising money for the American Cancer Society”; his account was flagged, then cleared after he proved his funds had reached the Society

#43416 – screencap of a new blog post:
- Olney challenges Gail to explain “how on Earth did Dave Lanphear get all that ‘talent’ to sign on for Tales of the Spooky” if he had no reputation (Scott Reed said Dave contacted him and said Olney had “deep pockets”, he didn’t Olney before, #40484)
- He again claims CBR makes money off the number of hits on, and accuses Gail of getting paid some of it for each hit from her forum, threatens this makes them culpable and will come out in court; he claims he has no problem meeting people in court [he’d not turned up to at least four cases]
- He again claims the police never talked to him about his threats against Melissa Reed, again pretends he didn’t know it was her, and presents it as “T-shirt matters” [he’d threatened to put her picture and contact details on dodgy websites]
- He again states he won’t post until Monday

#43428 – Gail Simone points out Dave Lanphear got all the talent because Dave had a good reputation and track record; “No one knew you from Adam. It was DAVE they signed for”; states again that she makes no money from her forum

Spoken like a REAL man, Jim. Now stop frontin' and acting like a little girl. Because IF we ever really crossed paths ... our eyes would tell us both what sort of dance we'd be doing. Heh, heh...

Is...is he hitting on Mac? Really?

Way back when he was insinuating that Gail got a job at DC by sleeping around, he mentioned that he was okay with it because 'I spent a lot of time on my back' in the Marines.

In conclusion, yes he is hitting on Mac.

I finally figured out why Rick and Dennis want to make comics. Because comics have spines.

#43439 – Scott Reed confirms that “nobody you hired in 2006 who [Olney was], beyond the bullshit [he] had fed to Dave Lanphear”

#43442 – Gail Simone posts another old email where Dennis Kininger admits he knows Olney hasn’t paid people and is lying, and says “I'd never treat people that way” – Gail notes that this clashes with Dennis’ email to Olney that Olney likes showing, where he says he thinks Olney has no reason to lie and he stands by him

#43446 – Olney’s said on his blog “There is a big difference between poor and broke. Broke can be fixed. You're all still bullies and I'm broke. Heh, heh...”

#43450 – MacQuarrie says Olney said in an email exchange “I have a degree in advertising, layout and design, working in the printing and lithography field for a dozen of my first years”; MacQuarrie notes this would have to have been after 1975 (when Olney was discharged), and asks for evidence “to support or refute this absurd claim”

#43453 – new Olney blog posts: he’s outright saying he won’t use his disposable income to pay people, claiming it's “a free country”; he threatens to go to Pittsburgh Comicon to commit violence against Colin McMahon

#43454 – Olney denies making sexist and racist comments; says he has respect for women “but not all females are women, and not all women are ladies”

#43455 – Dave Rothe disputes Olney’s claim of having printing experience and a design degree, stating “I emailed him several times and he knew nothing about printing or production”

#43463 – Olney attacks Dave Rothe on his blog, calling him lazy; “that is why you only did that ONE logo.” - Dave points out Olney’s just admitted he did work for him, and he can use this in court

#43465 – Danny Donovan confirms there’s a police file on Olney; Matt Doc Martin “called me and asked me to speak to the officer and fax them a signed statement” [there may just be a record, #43482]

#43469 – Olney says on his blog that he never “stated or threatened to kill anyone” (he threatened MacQuarrie, #43258, and posted a large iKill image of a Marine, #3014)

#43475 – Olney still hasn’t paid his court judgement to Scott Reed

#43477 – Olney deleted his blog posts again; since Google owns both Blogger and Matt Algren’s RSS aggregator, Matt “an undelteable [sic] copy of his post within two minutes or so every time he posts”; Matt is working on screencaps

Charles RB

Last for the night:

#43478 – Danny Donovan is owed $400 by Olney

#43481 – Scott Reed is owed $2,712.26 with an 11% interest rate if unpaid beginning 2007

#43484 – Samuel Catalino confirms Danny’s amount

#43488 – DocAbsurd states the columnists worked for $50 per issue; he is owed for 9 columns [$450], and was promised reimbursement for reviewed toys “but I’m not even going to bother with that”

#43490 – Samuel Catalino states Olney didn’t offer him money (and he didn’t ask) for columns, though he knows others were offered money; Olney made “pie in the sky promises”, which Samuel rejected as he doubted Olney could honour them

#43493 – Danny Donovan recounts Olney refusing to pay columnist Sarah Hasslett during a time when she had wedding & disability expenses to meet; he states Olney tried to get webcomics on the MMC website after the columnists left, though when he got GAAK they stopped updating “after the second or third strip”

#43494 – screencaps of Olney’s blog, including #43453, #43454, #43463 and #43469:
- He implies physical threat again
- He claims he was at Jeff Watkin’s first convention; claims he heard something about Jeff and “Fiddy” [50 Cent], and asks if that’s why Jeff got out of concert promotions and into comic conventions
- Claims Lance Boucher would need “a LEGAL claim with PROOF” to sue him [he libelled Lance, #43218]
- Responds to the mention of further court action and liens with “rots a ruck”

#43496 – Jeff Watkins is confused about what Olney heard “about me and 50 Cent. But we never had a problem.”; states Olney never attended his con

Sadly yes. What sadly Rick fails to understand....is this :

I'm fair from a perfect human being. In fact I fuck up a lot. If I owe someone I try and pay them back. I rarely borrow from friends (since I feel it hurts the relationship ) and If its family , I try to get it back asap. My uncle has floated me money in bad times . I have paid him back as well .

A few years back , I borrowed $1,000 bucks from him. I didn't want to but he is married to my aunt and told me ...I needed it. I paid him back $800 bucks of it and he would be like..."Take your time . Whenever ya can its ok."

I felt guilty about it....and then that winter near Christmas ...he and my aunt was there at my grandma's . I was off from work (took a local job at the time) and he handed me a card. I sit it down and ate , chatted and he left. My grandma asked if I had looked at the card , and then...I opened it.

He had stuck $200 bucks in it. "Ya don't have to pay me back anything....its X-Mas ..."

I wanted to pay him back but my aunt would be like "Nope...he don't want it. If ya send it , he'll mail it back."

Which was nice. You have to do good things to earn that goodwill Rick. Even today I bring it up and he's like.. "Nope...don't want it....are ya ok and need anything ?"

That's a cool story, Supe'.

Shame there aint more guys like your uncle.

Quick, we must post more, before Charles runs out of stuff to do!

I have heard ... now this should inspire at least 10 more pages of discussion, that Rick was in fact , practicing "black magic" and he claimed due to this , he pretty much was forced by the demons he conjured to not pay anyone !

Its said even today Rick can't bottle these demons up. Stuck to watch them wreck havoc and screw people.

...and I'm really glad he never made sergeant.

It's the "I served overseas getting POWs out!" bit that throws me.

It's possible that his overseas posting was one where he was a supply clerk for a mission/group/base/whatever that retrieved prisoners, that he worked in a support role. But what he's heavily implying is that he was in a combat role doing this, and in Marine Recon* no less ("RECOGNISE ANYONE?"). And that his service record is lying.

He claims his official service record is lying.

Just... no.

* If you were in Special Forces as a young 'un, wouldn't you still be physically fit in your 40s and 50s? I'm no expert, but I thought you were left with muscle tone that took a loooooong time to fade away.

I would think so, too.

I have one friend who was a 2nd Lieutenant in a rifle corps in the Army, who really did serve "in country", and even now he's still pretty fit. (His son is a Navy SEAL).

And my brother-in-law (married to my older sister), was an Air Force Commando (one of the first batch - when they didn't even "publicly exist"), and he's pretty fit too. Certainly not overweight to huff-and-puff conditions.

So, Olney? ... not so much.

The muscle tone will stay for a bit, but it's the training and exercise regimen that gets pounded into your system during boot camp that keeps it there ... otherwise, a former special services guy will end up pretty flabby, it'll just take a tiny bit longer for him to end up that way. Certainly not decades.

#43566 – the MMC MySpace page has vanished

#43583 – Olney blog post: he claims a journalist found out about his situation and asked him about it, then asked him “to consider adding my voice to making the online phenomenon of organized stalking or community-based harassment more widely known”; claims he is “the perfect type of person to victimize” because he doesn’t “back down” from a fight or get intimidated

#43584 – Bluecove points out that to be stalked, Olney would have to be “running away” from CBR et al; instead, he keeps engaging and attacking people

#43592 – on 3rd August 2008, Gail Simone received a message from an artist Olney cheated; the artist says Olney is “still” sending him threatening emails

#43598 – Olney blog post: claims simply buys and reads comics: “I don't want to know who writes my comics on a personal level, I don't want to know what the gossip is beyond who is going to be writing what, and I am infinitely suspicious of message boards and "fandom" in general” – this part of his post is a direct quote (unattributed) from a CBR post, #43577 - Olney says he makes an exception for “my own message board” and ORCA [this still clashes with his other message board activity, attempted fandom involvement, Tightlip and MMC etc]

#43599 – it’s pointed out that anyone who’s received threatening letters from Olney “[has] a case for cyber-bullying”; there’s a possibility of legal action

#43600 – screencap of #43583 and #43598; the second has reviews by a Scott Cooper [the text appears to be implying Scott wrote #43598 as well, but he’s not named until after that bit]

#43614 – Gail Simone has another email “from an artist who [Olney] tried to solicit work from, and when the guy said he wasn't interested, [Olney] began an endless parade of harassing and threatening emails that continues to this day.”

#43623 – Matt Algren points out “Scott Cooper” is a baseball reference, and may be a fake name

#43648 – back in 1999, Olney outright claimed he had combat experience [he didn’t]

#43650 – Danny Donovan did a Google search for Scott Cooper; some results but “nothing about a comic reviewer outside of [Olney’s] blech page”

Remember how Rick said he bought all the Ric Olie figures at his local shop, figuring they could only go up in value? Well right now, if you hurry, a guy is selling 5 ( count em 5) Ric Olie figures for $5 and $5 shipping.

I guess it means that since Rick claimed they were named after him, they can't even give the damn things away. If I were Hasbro, I would be suing him for devaluing my property by association.

#43666 – blog screencap: Olney has posted a short story by Scott Cooper

#43680 – Olney blog post: Olney promises a 2008 Fall issue of Fresh, and a Winter one later [neither came out]; Olney says a new ORCA website will be out by the end of the holiday season, and promotes a “Try One” program through it; he promises the Try One program is anonymous, “no harassing emails from the anti-Rick Olney organised, or other wise, stalkers”

#43685 – Stressfactor raises that Scott Cooper may be a real high schooler, “and that Olney is going to take this kid's stuff and make him grandiose promises of getting him published and then string him along”

#43692 – Sarah Beach notes that Olney’s said he’ll take four to five months to do a website, which is oddly slow

#43698 – Sarah Beach finds where Olney stole his post on cyber-stalking; notes the original webpage is referring to physical stalking, not cyber-stalking

#43699 – screencap of an Olney blog post, which Olney backdated for some unknown reason: he’s posted a transcript of his NDA’s, which he claims he had everyone sign [he didn’t]; he states everyone has to get it “notarised by a Notary Public”, as this makes people’s signatures “a binding and enforceable agreement”

#43704, 43706 – it’s pointed out that notaries just provide third-party witness for contracts, they don’t make them valid or enforceable

#43708 – screencap: Olney has put up his work-for-hire contract, which is also backdated; he lies that he has never screwed anyone he had a contract with, claims there are groups using “smear and fear tactics” to keep creators from signing on with independent companies, and implies he’s working with creators currently

#43712 – Sarah Beach notes that Olney’s contract has “no provisions for the rights of TALENT should TightLip fail in its obligation to actually PAY the talent”; the contract also says the talent agrees all legal disputes must be conducted in New York state courts, which goes against federal law that says workers can file in the state where their work was done

#43714 – CutterMike wonders if Olney is “trying to claim that anyone who did any work before they had a self-signed NDA countersigned by himself is not owed any money?”; notes that this claim won’t work if there are any emails that indicate he “forgot” to mention NDAs or asked people to start work before they received them

#43716 – Colin McMahon notes:
- The NDA “clearly means that "Confidential Information" is information and materials”, to the extent that the talent can’t “even state there is a discussion”; this means if a creator doesn’t take the job he can’t reveal any details about it; the work-for-hire contract mentions the same thing, but due to the language Tightlip violates the NDA when it mentions creators in its press releases (and the talent violate when they say they work for him); revealing lack of payment is not covered in either document as a breach
- The NDA mentions which states laws it “will be governed by and construed in accordance with”, but the way it’s written makes no sense; it also mentions California state law, which is “possibly unenforceable” unless both parties are from California
- Tightlip’s sole responsibility under the work-for-hire contract is to pay up, so failure to pay “breaches the contract”
- The NDA is with Olney, the contract is with Tightlip; “They are two documents dealing with two different entities.”

Well, it IS an awesome book, Tony. It's no surprise it's doing well.

As for me, I just finished a monthlong book tour for my fourth IG novel, THE SHADOW DRAGONS - and just a little while ago, I posted this:

"The Future is Bright With Dragons: My publisher has extended an excellent offer, which my manager has accepted, to publish Books 6 and 7 in the Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica. Future Octobers are looking GREAT!"

When I worked for a small press in the 1980's, they had no idea what their contract really meant, as they had plagiarized it word for word from the now defunct Pacific Comics' contract. Imagine their surprise when they realized it didn't give them the copyright and trademark to A Distant Soil as they believed it had.

#43739 – MacQuarrie believes Olney’s NDA mentions California state because “he cribbed a form from some random website and was too stupid to notice what it actually said”

#43747 – Olney has taken down his last blog post

#43757 – Olney contacted MacQuarrie, and they had an email exchange over the last few days; he says it showed him an “interesting quirk” in Olney’s psychology, and that he’ll inform people of it if they need to contact Olney

#43777 – Matt Algren states that Olney’s insult about Tom went up half an hour after a post about Morgan Freeman being injured; “he was saying 'Wow, this is such a horrible situation, let's pray for him', followed… by 'Pray for this guy too CUZ HE FAT HAHAHA'”

Well, if anyone's interested, I've finally launched my new podcast (http://evercast.libsyn.com/), where I'm releasing audio books in serial format, including my Christmas novel A Long November. I've also released a collection of A Long November and eight short stories as an eBook suitable for the Kindle or any other such device (https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/5662). And both of these, incidentally, are 100 percent free of charge. Although the eBook is only free until the end of the year. (After that it'll cost a whopping $1.99.)

Thanks to the pre-roll ads on my videos (surprisingly for Chiles and "Hornitos" tequila, of all things), I've made several hundred dollars by making fun of Frank Miller, PSA comics, the Doom comic, and even an extra $35 for a commentary track for my joint review with Douglas Walker for Superman 4.

Plus I've been in communication with awesome fans, some of which are even willing to give me stuff because they are awesome, and even a lady who makes cosplay props who's helping me out with something I'm assembling: http://proplady.livejournal.com/

Yeah, funny how being kind to nice people and cracking jokes at utter crud has actually been more successful than anything Olney has ever attempted to do, plus allowed me to meet some spiffy people.

That reminds me; I really need to buy Tony Isabella's book, because I am interested in the works of awesome people.

I need to buy Tony's book too, but that purchase (like several others) is waiting for a specific block of money to come in.

But on the other hand, I've been at Loscon this weekend. It's the annual convention for the Los Angeles Science Fiction and Fantasy Society (their 36th). I've been having fun. Yesterday I was on two panels in a track of panels about writing. The first was "How to Write Hard Science Fiction When You are Not a Scientist" -- basically about how writers schould do research, and what of your research really needs to go into your story. We had a full room, and it was fun. (Noted SF writer Harry Turtledove was on the panel.) Then later in the afternoon, I was on a panel on "World Building in Fantasy & Science Fiction", which went really, really well -- that room was overflowing and spilled out into the hall. (David Gerrold was one of the other four people on that panel with me.) Oh, and I sold 6 copies of my book at the booth I was helping work -- for the Greater Los Angeles Writers Society (which was sponsoring the writing track at the con). I was very happy about that. I'm hoping to sell more copies today.

I admit it, self-marketing is really hard work, when you don't have a publisher behind you. But being on these panels and making these sales is a very nice kick off on my next push for the book. One of the buyers showed up at the GLAWS party last night, to tell me that she had not intended to start reading it until after the con - but she did begin reading over dinner. She hadn't gotten very far into the first section, but already it was sparking ideas for her in the story she's been working on. That was so very cool for me to hear (because of course, that's WHY I wrote the book!).

So I'd say I'm having a pretty good weekend.

NotWit, of course, can't really make any claims like mine, or James' or Blake's or Tony's. He would like to do so, but he doesn't want to do the work to get there. He seems to think we should shower him with praise just for being himself. Heh.

I have a Toy Boy special coming out probably in January. I'm sending it off to the printer next week and it will be available for fans and retailers via Haven Distribution.

Toy Boy: What Happens In Vegas

It's a Las Vegas caper tale pitting Toy Boy against his arch-nemesis and former flame Butterfly Lowenstein!!! Can Toy Boy keep the forces of C.R.I.M.E., the government and a bitter ex-lover off his back long enough to make it through ToyCon?

It's 32 pages, color and a cover by new WildC.A.T.S. artist Tim Seeley. Oh, and some dude named MacQuarrie is slapping the whole deal together.

#43876 – Olney removes his countdown to the Fresh relaunch

#43890 – Olney blog post:
- Olney bemoans that “lazy and unmotivated” people shift the blame for problems to others (i.e. him), want those others to fail, and try to bring them down to their “low level”; says failures don’t matter as much as how you conduct yourself after falling, implying he’s been a model of good conduct
- Says that the accusations against him come from “from nameless, faceless individuals who therefore don't have to account for or back up their ridiculous claims” [the claims against him are often backed up; his claims rarely are]; says that if people acquainted with him see accusations about him, “if it comes from someone you do not know, then they do not exist”

#43897 – Bert points out that many of the people accusing Olney aren’t “nameless”, they post under their real names

#43899 – screencap of #43890

#43900 – Olney blog screencap:
- Olney says he has been writing a family history book since 2001 and it’s nearly finished; claims he has a publisher [it’s not come out] and that it’ll be edited; claims again he’s going to self-publish
- Claims that his comic collection included old Journey into Mystery issues and comics from the 1940s and 1950s (originally owned by his dad); he claims he no longer has a “personal comic collection” and gave it to his son (he previously claimed he’d move it to a “secure location”, #41335); says he’s going to collect the first 82 Journey into Mystery issues [this implies disposable income]
- Posts a long, rambling childhood (age 11) anecdote, possibly to gain sympathy; the anecdote includes how Olney was “disgusted” because, after playing with his younger cousin’s playset at his gran’s house, his aunt came by to take the playset home; Olney seems to still view this as a bad thing his aunt did, and claims his gran was “actually pretty ‘put out’ with my aunt over her acts”

#43911 – Sarah Beach believes Olney means he’s using a print on demand publisher, and notes he’ll “editing services” cost money; believes Olney’s claiming he gave his collection away so it won’t count as an asset that can be seized

#43926 – Nat Gertler notes that Olney keeps calling his comic ventures “self publishing”, which Tightlip wouldn’t count as (it hired people to do their own stuff); “Perhaps he believes that any publishing he does himself is thus self-publishing”

#43928, 43930 – Tom Stillwell and James Owen state “a judge could order the comics seized based on [Olney’s] intent to obscure assets”, as Olney claimed he’d given away his collection after he had outstanding judgements to pay

#43933 – Samuel Catalino believes Olney does not have a large or valuable connection, and is just trying to bait people; he does know Olney has an X-Men #19

#43948 – screencap of Olney’s blog: Olney posts an excerpt from and link to an article about “the grieving brain”

This thread came in handy tonight.

I'd applied for an online writing job, which said "contract" in the ad - I assumed that meant payment. I got a form email saying I'd been approved and I just needed to sign the contract.

My mind flashed back to years of the Olney thread and talk about contracts and how dodgy bits can be in them, and lo and behold, I found two such bits! One revealed I only get paid a share of revenue from ad clicks on a page, and this is at their discretion, and I only get the money when it equals USD $10. Which is not what the ad implied.

I'd frown and think "okay, that's not good, maybe worth keeping in mind if I want something for the CV though"... until I see a bit that reminds me of Olney's contract, the bit on his contract where he tried to say you go through NY state courts if this goes to court. Yep, these guys had a bit like that in their contract too: if it goes to court, it has to be in the Province of British Columbia in Canada.

So if you're not a Canadian who lives within reasonable distance of British Columbia, you're a bit stuffed. So that'd be me stuffed. The company does quite well out of this though, they can avoid paying me for ages (if ever) and are protected from legal strikes from non-Canadians.

Thank you Olney thread, for training me to spot dodginess!

Charles, the "no pay until the amount reaches $10 US" doesn't surprise me too much. The Amazon Associates program has that limit, when you have links to things on your own site. (I know this as I don't get a lot of clicks through my site, where people order from Amazon after following one of my links -- in fact, my "income" has been stuck below that $10 amount for months, and keeps getting rolled over forward.)

[Given the fees that businesses are charged for internet transactions, I can understand why they wait until the $10 threshold gets crossed before transfering funds.]

But yeah... very good thing to read through the contract. As occasional spending money, being paid for ad clicks might be okay, but not if you're really trying to build a career, not as a regular gig.

Charles, the "no pay until the amount reaches $10 US" doesn't surprise me too much.

It wouldn't be too big a deal except that they didn't mention it until the contract, and gave the impression in the job ad that there was more to it and it would be a regular gig - if they'd been up-front, I'd be fine with it (it'd be a CV padder), but the way they've done it makes me suspicious. Just so folks know, that sort of "no pay until it reaches $10" clause isn't some evil attempt to stiff you - it's a practical matter for those on both sides of the payment. Cutting a check, mailing a check, tracking the information all cost money, and if the goal is mutual profit, that isn't serving the goal. Meanwhile, someone with an income source that brings in a buck a month is generally better off getting one check a year and dealing with that, rather than having to deal with a check every month. Limiting freelance pay to $10 in the US also settles the question of whether the publisher has to report that income to the IRS.
That isn't to say that it can't be done stupidly (I've got one publisher whos is spending a couple bucks per quarter to tell me that they owe me 59 cents, but won't pay me until it reachs $25... and they've been doing this for years), but generally speaking, it's a legitimate method of working.

#44136, 44137 – Gail Simone reports Scott isn’t named as an ORCA member in the apa’s; OzBat believes this means Scott is a new contributor and Olney is “trying to dodge the constant calls of non-payment to contributors, by bribing new ones with the ill-gotten gains of his "auction" collections”

- He quotes posts from CBR, with a comparison of the posts to “watercooler” gossip; Gail Simone is referred to as “the office busy body… doesn’t work well with others, consistently late to work, always looking for a free handout, never turns down a free doughnut”
- He also continues to bring up Gail using a pen-name, referring to her as “Tam” and saying “at least I am who I say I am” [he’s often lied about his former career and achievements]; claims “you have really put on weight these last few years” and suggests she has severe health problems she’s not talking about, advises her to get exercise, and watch cholestoral and blood pressure [Olney is overweight]
- He claims he has a publisher and “over 3 dozen comic stores working with ORCA too”
- He defends his deleting of posts: “Lots of people say stupid things… Why shouldn't a person have a right to say something in print and redact or remove it?” - Matt Algren points out Olney tries to pretend the things he deleted never happened

#44161 – Olney stole his (then current) blog copyright notice from Matt Algren’s blog

#44164 – Olney adds to the notice: "No permissions are given to copy, reproduce, or electronically transmit this material after its original placement. Thank you."

#44171 – Olney blog post, screencapped:
- He claims on August 12 2008 “no more nasty posts from me” [he would go on to post more] and says he sincerely apologises to various people; he asks Doc Absurd, Samuel Catalino, and Danny Donovan to contact him about clearing up the problems they had working for him [he’d done this before]; he claims again that he’ll work “on knocking those legally owned debts down”
- He claims he was being sincere when he said he was worried about Gail’s weight and health; refers to Unscrewed as “sitting on [a] pile of cash”; says he won’t “allow any of you to distract me further from settling these various matters”
- Claims he has two publishers, one for hardcovers and one “to handle my tech stuff”

Well, think about it Gail.. if you didn't know all of this stuff to be true, you'd swear it's a really bad story with a horrible cast of characters.

Maybe they just want it to be a hoax so Jesse Ventura can use it on his new series?

I just had a pro friend ask me if Rick Olney actually existed or if he was a hoax. HA!

Well, he hasn't posted on his Segmented Soul blog since October 24, and seemingly not on Twitter in just as long a time.

And, unless he's "Fairport, New York", he hasn't checked his own blog, according to Feedjit in that time either. I'm guessing it is possible that he's "Fairport, New York" given how frequently that does show up on Feedjit since October 24.

But really.... he is almost too improbable to be believed. Unfortunately, he does exist.

#44181 – Sarah Beach points out Olney “tried to “play nice” last year”… [#31334, #31444] but he didn't want to commit to the things he would actually have to do to make the situation better”

#44183 – Gail Simone states Olney’s ‘turned over a new leaf’ “so many times they actually made fun of it YEARS ago back on Comicon”

#44190 – Crowley notes that in Olney’s apology post, he puts the word damage in quote marks (i.e. “damage”), which implies he hasn’t really done any damage

#44198 – MacQuarrie responds to Olney’s copyright claim (#44164): he states that the screencapping and archiving of Olney’s posts falls under “the Fair Use doctrine”, as they preserve a record “for legal and journalistic purposes.”

#44208 – Danny Donovan states he’s going to contact Olney, as asked (#44164)

#44221 – new Olney blog post, screencapped:
- he claims he has made arrangements to pay people and started two weeks ago, and that he will make payments [he didn’t]; “there is a specific qualifying criteria for this process”, claims he will only settle with three people at a time, two people “rebuffed” him and that this means they can’t “settle with me” [again putting the onus on the people he owes]; in regards to respect and compassion, he says “I give on the same level that I get”
- Matt Algren notes Olney’s making a power grab here: “if he decides that he owes you money, then you must meet a set of criteria defined by him… ...and you'll have to wait your turn, which is entirely dependent on how he feels about you that day”

#44223 – Matt Doc Martin asks if Olney’s contacted Scott Reed to make payment arrangements

#44228 – Lance Boucher notes Olney’s blog mentions creator Jose Roberto Meserina, AKA Nino; Lance states “Nino in no way condones anything RO has done”

#44232 – new Olney blog post, screencapped:
- Olney mentions Nino, starting with saying he “never placed himself in the position of taking ‘sides’ or judging anyone based on, or in spite of, what other people had to say about, say… me”
- Presents himself as a victim because people aren’t responding positively to his apology; quotes P.G. Wodehouse on how “the right sort of people don’t want apologies, and the wrong sort take a mean advantage of them”

#44245 – new Olney blog post, screencapped: the post is headed “And so it goes”, and quotes Lord Herbert about how “every man has need of forgiveness” and the damage caused by not forgiving people

#44250 – new Olney blog post, screencapped: Olney responds to a post by Crowley [this is one day after he said he would stop responding to CBR]

You remember those people he was going to pay by the beginning of October? Or was it the beginning of November?

No word that he's paid them yet. One of them was going to let me know if anything showed up. It hasn't.

I'm betting he's going to be using his recent trip to the hospital as the excuse for doing NOTHING about any of his longstanding debts. Because he comes first, of course. Even though lots of other people manage to find ways to pay both medical expenses and other debts.

Hey ho. Nothing new.

Hey there, I'm coming late to the conversation, I know, but I wanted to find out who is this Rick person, and what's he been saying? Is he spreading hate-talk or something? I hope it doesn't interfere with your writing all the great stories you have to tell.

And I'd have to agree with you on Guapo!

Best,

Perry

Just to pop in to say that Guapo is APPALLINGLY handsome, and has a great television career. In other words, he is the opposite of Rick in all ways.

AND he's married to an unbelievably beautiful woman. There's a reason why he's been called the Mexican James Bond for years.

I'm not making any of that up, it's all true. When I needed a gorgeous Latina woman as a model for Velocista in JLA: Classified, we used Guapo's wife (with Guapo's permission).

They're THAT good-lookin'.

Just saying for the record.

Hi, all,

Just wanted to thank Bert and his kind words about HERO. Reminded me that posting here can be fun and enjoyable. (Thanks again, Bert! Love the Firestorm icon!)

Hey, now that Marvel will be in the Disney wheelhouse, I may have some opportunities to write and create some things. Any characters you or anyone else would like to see me write, knowing my work from HERO?

Thanks for considering the question!

All the best,

Perry Moore

Jeff, you're a mensch and a hero.

yeah, I said it, "Hero"

(but not the gay kind, like in that wonderful book, "Hero" by Perry Moore, who sometimes posts here -- not that there's anything wrong with that. . being a gay Hero that is, but there's not anything wrong with posting on YABS either).

#44251 – Crowley responds: points out to Olney “Common sense is that you pay people you owe first and then pursue your goals.”; notes he still has Melissa Reed’s photo up; states that if Olney sent cheques to Unscrewed, they would forward them on “and we could monitor you ACTUALLY paying people.”

#44253 – Lance Boucher has contacted Olney as requested:
- Lance demands an apology for the claim that InterFan had anything to do with defacing Olney’s mum’s photo (#43218), as this is libel and could damage InterFan; “I will give you by Friday to have an apology or I may have to take alternate avenues”
- Olney responds, starting with the insult “please read this reply slowly”; refers to Lance’s demand for an apology as a ‘trick’, as “any response of substance from me will only be turned around to make your event appear to be needing sympathy attendence… I'll not begin to try and satisfy your bruised ego”; accuses Lance of making damaging comments about ORCA, which he says is “operating under not-for-profit standards”
- Lance asks what not-for-profit standards means, “do you have a Tax ID number?”; again asks for an apology; asks Olney to show the email address the defaced photo came from

#44257 – MacQuarrie makes a demand to Dennis Kininger and Olney for the email of the photo defacer, pointing out the sender could then be tracked; states if he doesn’t receive the information, “we” will conclude Olney altered the photo to defame Unscrewed and CBR, “and legal action for libel will be forthcoming… We will go into court and request a subpoena seizing [Dennis’] computer as evidence and will find out in a court of law who sent the image”

#44263 – screencap of an Olney blog post: Olney responds to Samuel Catalino, while saying he only wants to be contacted by those “supposedly owed by me” [emphasis his]:
- Olney again claims Ian Shires put ‘back doors’ into the MMC forum, claims he spent money trying to fix it;
- Claims “ “Gail Simone” ” said a portion of the industry “laughed at what I was trying to do in calling attention to the reading value of comic books… [and] focus on younger readers”, presenting himself a victim
- Again claims his family are in potential danger; again claims he can and will prove he was right about everything he said; again claims again he’s being bullied and is “an easy target”; again claims he’s never used sockpuppets
- “My sons have asked me to invite a few of you to our upcoming family gathering this Sunday. I guess they were hoping to play football. No doubt nobody would show no matter how much of a good time they’d have”
- Insults Samuel repeatedly

#44265 – Cutter Mike also offers to help Olney find out who sent the defaced photo

#44271 – Jared Humpherys notes that despite his apology, Olney keeps refuting any suggestion that he’s done anything wrong; asks what Olney is supposed to be apologising for then

#44272 – Lance Boucher asks for InterFan to be added to MacQuarrie’s libel suit if it occurs

#44275 – Olney/Lance Boucher exchange:
- Olney states there will be no apology; claims that by insulting the ORCOMX apa, Gail Simone is insulting “the Kapa-Alpha and MZS APA that I participate on” and showing disrespect for the small press
- Olney claims again that DocAbsurd’s ICC was “mostly my idea… see how I can prove that -- Remove Olney from that mix and it drops into the silent cold balck pit of nothingness where Tolbolski [Doc] wants it”; continues to insult DocAbsurd and use his real name against Doc’s wishes
- Claims he’d like to show the email of the man who sent the defaced photo, but can’t; claims legal cases are going to happen soon [they didn’t]
- Claims he does have a Tax ID number: “TightLip Entertainment has its own EIN. ORCA has refiled as a NPO”
- “I'll pay those I see fit the criteria and the rest won't be paid because they had no contract. End of story.”

#44277 – Gail denies she’s slamming other apa’s

#44288 – Gail is contacted by a second ORCOMX-APA contributor who never wants to talk to Olney again and has “nothing but bad things to say about him” (#44173)

#44295 – Olney told Lance he’s going to a Baltimore convention; Danny Donovan is going to the same one, and notes he can invoice Olney in person if he hasn’t been paid by then

"“My sons have asked me to invite a few of you to our upcoming family gathering this Sunday. I guess they were hoping to play football. No doubt nobody would show no matter how much of a good time they’d have”"

Ew. Pork n' beans and a reacharound...I don't think anyone wants to attend that party!

And Perry, Rick Olney is one of the industry's worst deadbeats and a genuinely horrific human being. He cheats everyone he comes in contact with, and has delusions of being an industry big wheel despite failing at everything he's ever attempted.

And those are his GOOD qualities!

Charles RB
12-08-2009, 09:32 AM
I wanted to find out who is this Rick person, and what's he been saying? Is he spreading hate-talk or something?

He has, yes. He's also made repeated threats to sue people (which he never did) and verbal assaults on people who went against him, going back to the late 1990s. He's scammed convention guests (both comics and horror genre), con-goers, comic creators, retailers, people who thought they were donating to charity, a man running a "comics in classrooms" program, and a coach company; he's been doing that for years and years too.

This thread was started because he'd scammed Chuck Dixon and it spilled out into the public; Gail, scammed at a con, backed Chuck. This caused dozens and dozens of people to come forward with Olney stories. She still gets new ones from time to time.

EDIT: Also, he lied a lot about his military record. One great lie was when he posted a photo of a 1973 Marine Recon team and the words "RECOGNISE ANYONE?". Kevin Brown found that Olney had pinched the photo from a real Marine Recon vet's website, and he wasn't in it at all. Olney then claimed he never meant to imply he was in the photo.

EDIT 2: He also once posted a photo of an overflowing toilet, directed at Gail... on the front page of his comic convention website.

#44299 – Joanne Mutch/Hansen talks more about the damage Olney did to the Small Press Association (SPA), #10100; adds that Lance Boucher, DocAbsurd, and Ian Shires weren’t seen as the bad guys, though Olney tries to paint them as such

#44303 – MacQuarrie disputes Olney’s claim of ‘back doors’ being built into his forum by Ian Shires (#44263); points out that the back doors Olney complains about are “Administrative access, and are necessary for installation and moderation of the forums…they come with the program”; he believes Olney “screwed up his own forum” and is blaming Ian to shirk responsinibility, offers to help Ian sue Olney for libel

#44305 – Samuel Catalino backs up MacQuarrie’s theory

#44313 – DocAbsurd says Ian Shires gave Olney the forums for free, and that “Ian had backdoor safeguards installed; what intelligent webdesigner doesn't?”; states that Ian didn’t hack the board though, and only Olney had the power to have administrators removed

#44319 – DocAbsurd states that when he was working on the ICC, Olney had someone else working on it “at the exact same time I was. You fed him the exact same sales pitch you hooked me with. The only difference was you were gonna pay him”; restates the ICC only got people because he told them Olney was not involved

#44322 – Crowley denies Olney’s claim that he “somehow managed to get your hands on my private family pictures on Photo Bucket”

#44323 – Olney has again threatened to contact the US authorities about Joanne [he believes she’s a bootlegger; she isn’t]

#44325 – Olney blog post, MacQuarrie responds:
- Olney claims he won’t repay more than two people at a time, “I simply can't afford that and pay my attorney and get these first issues on my books produced by years end”
- Olney claims MacQuarrie offered “to moderate the repayment aspect of whose owed what and when”; MacQuarrie states this is a lie, and he can prove it with the original emails
- Olney claims it’s a “generous gesture on my part” to pay for work even though he hasn’t received it all yet; MacQuarrie points out Olney’s own contract says he doesn’t own the work until he’s paid for it, and therefore won’t receive the art until then
- Olney tells MacQuarrie to “go ahead and file [suit]” (#44257), and reveals nothing about the email; MacQuarrie takes this as proof that no one from CBR defaced the photo, as otherwise Olney “would eagerly say so”

Yeah, I'm wasting all my time at work on you Rick. I couldn't possibly be using my iPhone or home computer.

#44326 – Olney says DocAbsurd “'skunked' me and was never in one place long enough to be worth a damn to me that day. His concern was that he wanted to stay at his spot at the table where Shires had his set-up” – Doc states he was always in the hall, and that he was running about because Olney “left me with the chore of inviting all the guests for my panel” & only told him this at the last minute

#44329 – MacQuarrie restates he will take a libel suit out if he doesn’t hear from Dennis Kininger by “Friday”; states that if the police are looking into the defaced photo as Olney claims, “feel free to have them call me”

#44330 – MacQuarrie notes Olney is using “Koop” as a character witness [#44358]; he asks Olney if “you[‘re] sure you want to do that?”, and that he can call Koop now to see if he’s happy about it

#44331 – Gail Simone notes that Olney’s “"I'm a CHANGED RICK" didn't even last a day!”

#44334 – Olney says “An offer is not contractual, and neither is a promise.”; Colin McMahon points out they are, and an “email with and [sic] offer and a reply with acceptance… is sufficient to prove a contract in court”

#44352, 44353 – Joanne has spoken to her local police about Olney, says she will do again because of his last threat; she asks for Olney’s address, Matt Doc sends it to her

#44355 – Olney responds to Tom Stillwell saying Unscrewed have found a counsel in Herkimer, saying “I know exactly who you're talking about and I pretty much know who pointed him to you”; accuses Tom of “using your company's resources to do things on the Internet” - Tom replies that he found the counsel via Google, and that he does work for Unscrewed on his own time

#44358 – screencaps of Olney’s last few blog posts (see above for more details):
- In the first, he again pretends he doesn’t know it’s Melissa Reed in her photo, and states “I don’t owe Scott Reed nothing”; again claims he’s being “instructed” as if he has an attorney
- In the fourth, he denies Joanne’s account of the SPA meltdown, claims she had bias (“had been ‘courting’ Wizard”) and altered one of his posts, and “leveraged” her friendship with Ian Shires’ wife to get Olney punished; claims Ian Shires “has treated other people like that too”; claims the SPA affair happened after MMC 2003; claims “I did turn you and your husband into the Border police, btw” [Joanne has visited the US since then]
- He also claims that at MMC 2003, he spent all his money on renting 80 tables after the venue let him down, and “I was broke” afterwards; he then claims he paid $300 for everyone’s breakfast the next day [the hotel breakfasts were complimentary to all guests, #44326]; he blames the college venue and other people for all the problems
- Claims he didn’t give retailers their table money back at the cancelled MMC 2004 because “it was a recognised standard with shows and some conventions (at that time) NOT to give back table monies”, writes about this as if it was someone else’s decision; says at the 2004 The Spooky, he had horror website Guts and Glory hire Friday the 13th guests for him and “they didn’t do a damn thing in helping to keep the venue cost down… as they kept adding more names to the guest list” [he didn’t stop them?]
- In the fifth, when responding to Gail, he says “thank God it is nearly over!” and insinuates he’s going to sue soon
- In the seventh, he believes Al Dorantes and Richard Sullivan are the disgruntled former apa members, “Big whoop!”; claims he did the important work on the ICC

YOU HURT MY FEELINGS! I'M CALLING THE FEELINGS POLICE!

>dial dial dial<

>ring ring righ<

Hello, Feelings Police? This is Rick Olney, I'm sure you know me from my non-existent club, the Mohawk Valley....what's that? Yes, I've called a few hundred times in the past, but this time, it's REALLY SERIOUS!

What happened?

Oh, well, this lady I called a stripper and a sick bitch, well, she said something MEAN about me and I think you should go arrest her right now.

#44361 – Joanne has no idea what Olney’s referring to when he says she courted Wizard; denies Ian took action because she’s friends with his wife, denies altering one of his posts (she deleted it); “If he has somehow talked to the police about me, he is in so much damn trouble. If you haven't, you're still screwed.”

#44366 – Olney blog screencap, responding to Tom (#44355): again threatens legal action, claiming Tom “allowed this whole matter to be a hunt to harass and malign me and my family”

#44367 – Olney blog screencap, responding to DocAbsurd (#44326): Olney again claims Doc was supposed to do work at the MMC that he skived off on; “the blame game is foolish”, then blames Doc for not “living up to what you said you’d do”; claims Doc is lying about being ill that day, says it was only a cold; doesn’t dent that the hotel provided complimentary breakfasts - Olney then backdated this post so it would appear before the last one (#44370)

#44369 – Lance Boucher says he was around for the ICC and Olney isn’t telling the truth; says Olney showed off him and DocAbsurd on his site “as you wanted to make sure Ian saw that so he would go ballistic and making a uncomfortable situation worse”

#44370 – more Olney blog screencaps:
- Olney responds to MacQuarrie (#44329), saying the police can find out how to contact Mac if they want to [so he’s not pointing them Mac’s way]; makes legal threats, tell him to “muzzle the threats towards Dennis”; tells MacQuarrie to call Koop if he wants, says he helped Koop load his truck after the con
- Olney responds to Gail, claiming he always tries to be polite to her in print [he doesn’t] and CBR starts the slanging matches; later, he again claims Joanne’s a bootlegger and Gail is supporting criminal acts; claims the MVCN still exists, but the MMC will be back in 2009 and appears to claim it’ll be a non-profit group [he may have meant the MVCN and just wasn’t clear]; claims he’d be able to pay people and he wouldn’t be insulting anyone if Gail et al left him alone to settle matters on his own
- Olney responds to Colin McMahon (#44334), again claiming he had “NO contract or implied compensation for services” for MMC columnists, beyond the promise that the “matter would be re-evaluated” if the site started making money [all of the columnists claim he made a different offer”]

#44371 – DocAbsurd restates his claims about the MMC, including that Olney begged him to come; says that he used the same table as Ian Shires because Olney didn’t have enough tables, and that Olney didn’t pay for his meals; “let's ask someone else who moderated one of the other panels… let's see if you mentioned to them that I was running the panels and the lack of coordination was my fault.”

#44375 – Lance Boucher responds to Olney’s claim that Tightlip has an EIN and ORCA is now an NPO (#44275), asks what the EIN is and when & who with Olney put in the NPO application; “what category are you using? Who is on your board?” [this information would be public domain]

#44379 – Olney claims his family photos were never posted anywhere, and that he’ll press charges if he find out who hacked them from Photobucket (he implies again Crowley did it); OzBat points out Olney put the photo of his mother up on the blog at the end of July, “You can't even keep your lies straight less than two weeks apart, on your OWN BLOG.”

#44380, 44384 – Olney steals material from other websites again; he adds a dig at small press publishers to one of the posts, which shows ignorance of small press being edged out of Previews by Diamond’s cut-off policy [Diamond had been doing this for a year by that point]

#44390 – Gail Simone states Olney’s wrong about the two apa contributors who contacted her (#44358), meaning “at least FOUR of them hate him… the total roster is only 12-15 at most”

And I find it amusing that Rick feels that it's his civic duty to protect us from the Canadians.

Dear Charles,

Thanks for filling me in. Now I'm happy that I've lived in blissful ignorance of this guy.

Two things spring to mind:

1. Don't mess with Gail Simone. She's a force for good, put on this earth to create incredible stories, and her participation in these forums is an inspiration to all we love about the genre.

and,

2. Don't ever, ever pretend to be a Vietnam Veteran if you aren't. I grew up with a Vietnam Vet, my father. Claiming to have been through what they went through is an injustice to everything these Vets continue to endure.

Thanks again for filling me in, and for letting me have my peace about it.

All the best,

Dear Gail,

I think I'm ready to give it a shot, writing for comics. I have too much respect for those of you who do it so well that it's always been an intimidating thought.

Man, I'd LOVE to tackle Dr. Strange. There's so much there to work with. And as you know I'm fascinated with magic, mythology, faiths, and, of course, anything strange.

(Wait til you see the next novel..."Way of the Wolf: Book One, Fire.")

Sorry this guy has been such a jerk to you.

I was approached by a Disney bigwig last week about turning HERO into a graphic novel once their deal goes through. That's sorta confidential, I guess, but I love to share here, and I need some help.

Foremost on my mind, which artist do you think would be the best to work with on HERO?

Hope you're getting a chance to enjoy a holiday season, in between all your storytelling,

Perry

Hope you're getting a chance to enjoy a holiday season, in between all your storytelling,

Perry

2. Don't ever, ever pretend to be a Vietnam Veteran if you aren't. I grew up with a Vietnam Vet, my father. Claiming to have been through what they went through is an injustice to everything these Vets continue to endure.

Fucker even claimed he was involved in retrieving Vietnam War POWs. It's possible he was involved in the admin side of things - not probable, but it is possible; he was overseas for a year as Supply Admin - but he deliberately implied he was seeing combat.

He never saw combat. Or was an MP, his other claim. He was Supply Admin, then Messman. He also claimed he had a bunch of awards, he only has the basic "you showed up!" medal.

Thanks for shedding more light on that topic for me, Charles.

I know a little bit about Vietnam. Did a ton of research from personal "things they carried" (ref. to the superlative Vietnam War book by Tim O'Brien), especially going through the things my father brought back from the war.

One of the things he brought back was a Bronze Star. Is that what Ollney says he has. It's relatively easy to look up; those medals are all a matter of record.

Out of pure interest on the subject, I usually ask Vets where they were stationed (I know Dad was in Dog Tham, Can Tho, and some other places the government claimed they never were. Research research research. I want to write about Vietnam someday, but the right way hasn't come to me yet, so I ask and listen as much as I can. If you're ever suspicious, you can always ask questions like where they were stationed, what battalion in which they served, what unit, etc. Pretty simple stuff to answer if you were there.

Thanks for catching me up to speed.

I consider it one of the great injustices, the way Vietnam vets were and continue to be treated, and like I said, I know a little about it. Those vets who do come back, like Dad, rarely if ever talk about it.

It's a real shame anyone would ever lie about their service.

I can't remember beyond him claiming he had two Meritorious Masts (he didn't, his service record mentions nuffin).

Nitpick in the interest of fairness.,,,

Rick is a "Vietnam-era veteran." Not a Vietnam Vet, but close, on a technical level at best.

He did serve in the USMC during the last couple of years of that conflict, but he never went anywhere near the place and never served in combat. He has implied both these points on more than one occasion, so he is a big fat liar on that score, but he's not quite the big fat liar one might think. He is a Veteran who served (without distinction) during Vietnam, and I'll give him that much credit.

That is true, both my elder brothers were in the service (Navy and Army respectivly) and neither ever claimed to be Vietnam vets. Unless the war was in Hawaii or South Korea.

#44406 – new Olney blog screencap: Olney denies Lance’s claims about he treated him and Doc (#44369); continues to insult Doc and use his real name, says Doc dropped the task he was meant to do for the ICC and caused it to suffer; he refuses to answer Lance’s questions (#44375), claiming he normally would but not now that Lance has been “trash talking”

#44410 – new Olney blog post (screencapped):
- He says he can “prove otherwise” about everything Doc said (#44371); implies DocAbsurd keeps getting fired from jobs and that Doc uses his single-parent status as an excuse for not doing things
- He again denies that he has been contacted or visited by the police; he lies that he never threatened Matt Doc with physical violence (he did, #6696 and #33238)
- “You [Unscrewed and CBR] leave me alone and stop the harassment and libel and I promise to get to a final resolution sooner”
- Responds to #44379, admits the photo of his mother was taken off his blog [which is true but clashes with #44379]; then claims three people, including “Martin” [Matt Doc Martin] and Crowley have stolen other photos and have been “having fun” with them [he doesn’t say which photos]
- Claims he never bullied Joanne (he did; #3064, #3080, #3085, #3087)
- Attacks Ian Shires as helping keep small press comics restrained; claims he has big ideas “regarding ORCOMX and the general public” that he’s not going to tell us, says people will be envious when he implements them
- Keeps posting the “Block” icon, once following it with “BOO!” and another with “Ha!Ha!Ha!Ha!”
- Says he’s unaware of any other ORCOMX posters who have a problem with him

#44412 – MacQuarrie states he’s interested in the defaced photo of Olney’s mum because “you saw fit to tag it with my name, thereby insinuating that I had something to do with it”; says that he’s not dragging Dennis into the matter (#44370), Olney did that; “If he doesn't like it, he should take it up with you”

#44413 – MacQuarrie contacts Dennis Kininger about the defaced photo

#44414 – three minutes later, MacQuarrie reports Olney “took my name off the post with the defaced photo of his mom”; notes the original post is still screencapped

#44418 – there’s a new Fresh Countdown timer on Olney’s blog, now indicating the fanzine will come out in late September/early October

#44419 – Olney blog screencap, responding to Gail:
- In response to being told “go ahead and sue”, Olney claims “that isn’t actually my decision”, threatens that if he does “you will never forget the experience”
- Claims “a number of industry people” request not to be seated next to Gail at conventions, gives no source for this; complains she’s “vile and nasty”, “vulgar”, and “full of [her]self”, then later says “sorry to hear that you’re still sore, con virgin” and “oh Gail, I just love it when you talk dirty to me”
- Olney claims Jeff Watkins sneaked into MMC 2003 and implies Heroes Expo is only successful because Jeff learn “all sorts of good nad [sic] bad things from that 2003 MMC”
- “Why do I owe Mike [Kaluta] money too?” [Olney admitting owing Mike, #14780]

This may be the first time in leaggle history that a team of lawyers in a civil suit - who do not appear to be being paid by a client - went into leaggle team action in their mighty leaggle team efforts without the client's permission.

But it is all out of control, now!

Fear the leaggle team.

Tremble in fear.

Ooohhh.

#44430 – Olney blog screencap:
- Matt Algren reports Olney has been using animated emoticons that don’t show up in the screencaps [they come up as a “block” icon]; “At the bottom of this one is a sort-of racist Chinese one with the fu-man-chu and everything”
- Olney responds to #44412-14, with the header “Jim MacQuarrie ISN’T GUILTY, really he isn’t!”; he says in his response that he removed MacQuarrie’s name because he realised “[you] had mistakenly been placed there. Did I do something wrong? Would you prefer that I leave it there”; insults him as being “childlike” and “rude”

#44438 – Lance Boucher notes Olney hasn’t taken his name or InterFan’s off the post about the defaced photo

#44442 – Danny Donovan again confirms that Matt Doc contacted the police about Olney and that he made a statement to them

#44448, 44449 – MacQuarrie notes Dennis Kininger “isn’t answering his phone”, so he’s emailing him

#44454 – Samuel Catalino says “from past experience, it is very difficult to reach [Dennis]. I do not think it has to do with whether it is due to bravery or not.”

#44456 – DocAbsurd responds to #44410, points out all the excuses and “whining” that Olney has done; states he’s not doing anything with the ICC or cartooning because paying work and his children are the higher priority

#44458 – Lance Boucher points out it’s Olney who “dropped the ball” with the ICC, not DocAbsurd

#44468 – DocAbsurd compares how small-press comics normally work, compared to Tightlip

#44470 – Jeff Watkins denies that the MMC was the inspiration for Heroes Expo (#44419); he points out he’d worked in the entertainment industry and managed events before 2003, including comic shows

#44474 – MacQuarrie responds to #44430: states that even though Olney took his name down, Olney clearly intended to libel him (as well as Lance Boucher and Ian Shires) and “until you name names [about who sent the photo] or admit it was a fraud, I'm holding you responsible for your words, and Dennis as well”; states “Sometimes rudeness is the appropriate response”

This'll all be over by Christmas!

#44476, 44480 – Scott Reed and Gail Simone state that every indy comic company/convention (respectively) they’ve dealt with has paid or done what it promised, except for Olney’s

#44481 – Gail states she wasn’t a “con virgin” in 2003, she’d already been to many conventions

#44503 – MacQuarrie has received confirmation that someone did email the defaced photo of Olney’s mother to Dennis Kininger (#43218, #43307); “if (as is most likely) Olney faked the whole thing, he did it without Dennis' cooperation. As far as I'm concerned, Dennis is an unwilling pawn”

#44509 – CutterMike has received no emails from Olney accepting his offer to help find out who defaced the photo (#44265); snarks “It's almost like he doesn't WANT anyone to help him find out who sent it”

#44514 – Crowley points out “why would anyone e-mail [the photo to] Dennis and not e-mail [Olney] directly?”

#44516 – MacQuarrie reports: “Based on what I've been told, there is zero reason to believe it was anybody associated with YABS or Unscrewed” who defaced the photo; he doubts the other accused groups were involved, but is sending DocAbsurd and Ian Shires “a possible name to check out”

#44518 – Matt Doc Martin notes Olney’s been quiet all day, believes it’s because of MacQuarrie’s threats of legal action

#44512 – Gail Simone posts the transcript of an Olney MySpace blog from July [she was forwarded it]:
- Olney claims he’s working on “my new home in the Adirondacks”; that he “volunteered to help organize and conduct a huge family picnic for several families connected to the Olney family”; and that he’s spent over $1000 transferring 8mm home movies onto DVD for his family history book (#43900)
- He claims he’s done two thirds of his family history book and will publish it through Xlibris [a print-on-demand company]; claims he’s written twelve issues of Freedom 3, that “a publishing house that has offered to supply the creative team and handle all the production tasks”, and that it’ll launch later in 2008 [it didn’t]; that a renamed Monster Squad and a new comics camping convention will launch in 2009 [they didn’t]
- He also claims he’s writing a comic about the “woes” of his Tightlip and CBR/Unscrewed experiences; brags about getting attention from The Comics Journal over Freedom 3, due to it not being “ ‘politically correct’ ”

#44524 – Gail reports that Olney is trying to “rebuild his network of people he hasn't cheated yet” on MySpace, is requesting to be added as a Friend by everyone he sees, is writing to “‘famous people’ as if he knows them” (example #44529, explained in #44531), and is “already hassling artists”

#44525 – Gail reports Olney is trying to befriend every comic store he finds on MySpace; “they already know all about him on the private retailers' forum”

#44528 – Gail reports Olney’s “already trying to talk to all these pros about working for him, like Matt Busch”

#44531 – Gail reports a number of people on MySpace have now been warned about Olney

#44535 – Howler finds a message board where Olney’s implied to have various old comics

J-bolt and Olney really are a lot more similar than I used to believe. Both never accomplish anything, both think promises are the same as actually doing something, both believe they have fans, both feel they are hugely important in comics even though the only thing anyone knows them for is their failures, both seem to alienate and injure everyone unfortunate enough to trust them and both still try to scam everyone into believing they're still going to to meet their fake goals even though all hope of that is long since past.

Creepy.

Family picnic will last until at least then. He'll see Roger Jr. there and remember the Fort Apache play set, then come home angry with a little too much booze in his belly and start posting around 11:00.

It would be easy for someone like Colleen to turn into a supervilain. In fact, there's a supervillain that strikes around her who is almost exactly like Colleen. Same height, same flowy hair, same sharp fashion sense... only she has a green eyepatch!

I don't know if Colleen has ever met her. I don't think I've ever seen them two of them in the same place at the same time.

#44553 – Colin McMahon points out Dennis could’ve been emailed (#44514) because Dennis’ email was on a late July “Join ORCA” post

#44563 – Olney announces on his blog “I'm done mixing with losers. No more vile back-n-forth games”; says he’ll be away tonight and Sunday, but be back on Monday, August 18th 2008 [he didn’t post that weekend as promised, but didn’t on the Monday either]

#44565 – the above is screencapped; Olney has deleted “at 26 posts from the last week”

#44582 – MacQuarrie believes Olney’s trying to change the subject from the defaced photo

#44688 – Dave Rothe made his offer five days ago and Olney still hasn’t produced the details about the person who defaced the photo

#44696, 44699 – Nat Gertler and Matt Algren note on the 19th August that Olney’s “been redacting his blog again”; Olney has replaced the last post with a self-congratulatory one about how people find him “sinister” because he has “courage and character” and they don’t

#44700 – Olney claims his blog contents are trademarked [you can’t trademark writing, that’s covered by copyright]

Though J-Bolt did produce a comic, once. That's one more than Olney.

That should be soul-crushingly depressing, being worse than J-Bolt.
I think we should take a closer look at that...

J-Bolt produced:

- 24-page ashcan comic (actually just a collection of ads and promos for a bunch of comics that never actually existed), doing most of the art himself

- "limited-edition" promotional poster

- lots and lots of hot air about movies and videogames and so on.

Rick Olney produced:

- 3 (possibly more) covers for comics that never existed, using art other people created and for which they were not paid

- "Tales of the Spooky", a full comic book's worth of material that other people created, for which they were not paid, and which consequently was never published

- Various ORCA newsletters and websites, all of which were actually done by other people, who were not paid, and Rick took credit for their work.

And so on.

Summary:

J-Bolt's primary failing was his inability to follow through on even the most minimal baseline level of his projects, coupled with an inability to restrain himself from making grand announcements of plans he was incapable of ever carrying out. If he had Olney's ability to bullshit people into doing his work for him, he would be a lot more successful.

Olney's primary failings are dishonesty, megalomania, and a fundamental disrespect for anyone more talented than himself. If he had paid his talent for their work, he could have been moderately successful. As a creator, J-Bolt has him beat every possible way. They are both appallingly bad writers, but at least J-Bolt can draw. As a businessman, his failings are far worse; J-Bolt fails spectacularly over and over, but he doesn't deliberately screw over other people to the extent that Rick does.

Crowley

It should also be noted that J-Bolt and Olney are a dime a dozen among many other lunatics in the comic industry that do the exact same crap.

Dear Tony,

Wow, you just made this author one happy guy. It is the greatest honor any of can possibly have to connect with a reader, that's why we do what we do. (Trust me, it's not for the money--go to law school or get your MBA or engineering degree for that purpose.)

I think you encapsulated the story better than anyone ever has, including myself, with this sentence: "It's a coming-of-age story with several elements drawn from traditional super-hero comics and a protagonist whose like is sadly under-represented in the genre."

It's always difficult for me to overcome the book's moniker of, "Hey, that's the book about the gay superhero!" Because in fact it is the story of a hero who happens to be gay, and much much more.

So ultimately, I wanted to thank you, Tony, for seeing HERO as what it truly is, the universal, epic coming of age story of a teenager who happens to be gay. There's a lot of truth in there, and I really don't believe there's a comic book on par with Thom Creed, the hero who happens to be gay. Which is why I wrote it in the first place. There are, however, some great writers out there. I'd love it if somebody one-upped me in that department. You never know.

And thanks for helping turn some people onto the book. I have about four-thousand emails from grateful young fans, all of whom feel different-and now hopefully a little more empowered-in their own special way.

With my deepest gratitude,
Perry

That's easy. Rick always does whatever is easiest at the moment, has the most immediate emotional payoff to himself, or will best serve to avoid an uncomfortable situation in the immediate moment. He is incapable of seeing the big picture or the long-range consequences of any action; it's always about "right now." Getting the ego-boo of making an announcement now is always preferable to doing anything worth announcing later.

A couple of months ago, he was in a frenzy to prove his sincerity in intending to pay people off, since making good on his obligations was what was being demanded of him and he needed to try to create the appearance that he was doing it. He was hoping that you would immediately rush here and to Bleeding Cool and announce that you were getting paid, thereby validating his intentions, deflecting some heat and letting him praise himself for his good intentions.

Once that moment passed, the need to actually follow through vanished like a fart in a hurricane.

I always loved when he'd post these big annoucements on his blog that he was paying people. That it became a need to annouce it HUGE. What was funny , was he had said he would share who he would pay with Rich Johnston , but once push came to shove he got mad at Johnston and changed his mind. He'd tell him after it....

It was so typical Rick Olney.

1.) Make huge claims of payment , paint himself as a sincere figure beset by problems and angry people.

2.) As time ticks down grow angry at being painted as a deadbeat and blame those he owes.

3.) Change deal and everything involved.

4.) Lie like hell....and run away awhile....to think up new lies....

I think its because he basically made as usual grand promises to pay a bunch of people November 1st. Once he realized that day was ticking down he realized people would again... claim he was a liar. So its best to stay away awhile and let the heat go down...

#44704 – Nat Gertler finds Olney ripped off part of his last blog post from another blog and the rest from a dead man’s quote

#44721 – Colleen Doran receives an email from Olney, accusing her of calling his father a bad businessman and claiming he wasn’t; he says he’ll “tell you once” to not bring up his parents; “It must be tough living a life of estrogen driven, dysfunctional personality psychosis, with overtones of jealousy and insecurity.” – Colleen never mentioned Olney’s father anywhere; one of her posts mentions a former employer and his son and links to her blog post about them, and believes Olney thinks this was a secret dig at his dad

#44821, 44824 – MacQuarrie says that if anyone knows anything about the defaced photo, they should contact him as he wants to know for sure he’s not inadvertently defending a guilty party; “I will keep whatever you say in confidence and will not expose you… [Olney], if you want to send me the email you received so I can see for myself, I'd appreciate it.”; MacQuarrie points out he has previously backed up Olney when the facts were in his favour [including revealing he did serve, #23981]

#44829 – Olney’s blog now has a sidebar quote from the Bible: “In anger his master turned him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother from your heart. (Matthew 18:34-35)” – it’s pointed out Olney seems to miss the context and point of the quote [it’s from a parable against nominally accepting God’s forgiveness and that not treating your fellow man in kind]

#44831 – Colleen receives email harassment from Olney; the email is headed “NEED MORE PROOF?” and taunts “I might be a moron, but it was YOUR cat that died” [there is nothing else in the email]; Colleen replied telling him not to email her again

#44833, 44838 – Colleen receives another email, telling her “Keep your mouth shut about me”; she blocks his email and informs his email provider that he sent her emails after she asked him to stop

it appears that my cat dying MIGHT be proof of his magic powers. You see, the headline on it is:

NEED MORE PROOF?

Except...my cat died LAST MONTH before I wrote my post about the guy who ISN'T Olney's dad or Olney.

And my other cat died BEFORE I ever posted to this thread.

So, apparently, I am supposed to believe there is a causal relationship between the death of a 16 year old cat with renal failure (the world's most common cause of death for cats) and the death of a 20 year old cat with pancreatitis.

But...it's all about OLNEY!

Of a surety, his magickal powers have no limit! He makes extremely old cats die from long distance!

Surely, I must conjure a Patronus for protection!

Yes, unless you set your privacy settings so that only friends can message you, then anyone on Facebook can send you a message, unless you block them personally. He sent me a Friend Request months ago, I just denied it and then blocked him.

Well, he hasn't posted on Sequential Squick since October, before Halloween. Nor, so far as the widgets on the bog indicate, on Facebook or Twitter..

Well, the profile pic on his FB badge is of Santa Clause, which would indincate that he changed that pic recently, so he has been online since the last blog post. I'm surprised he hasn't deleted all of the posts about payment yet, so that when he does resurface he can pretend that he never said that.

I'm reminded of the guy who would open the Bible and randomly point at the open page for direction. After three times in a single sitting, he got:

"And Judas hanged himself."

"Go and do ye likewise."

"That which you do, do quickly."

#44875 – new Olney blog sidebar, which includes Yeats quotes “But I, being poor, have only my dreams; I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams” and "But was there ever dog that praised his fleas?"

#44930 – Ian Shires on accusations of hacking the MMC board he set up (#9888
#10019): states the MMC forum was Snitz; “I have e-mails from [Olney] asking me how to find out if someone was trying to hack into it, I don't write code...so I could only refer him to the snitz support forum”

#44931 – Gail Simone notes this disproves Olney’s claim that he spent “thousands” on forum software and fixing a back door Ian left in (#44263)

#44936 – Ian Shires states he was IP banned and couldn’t see the MMC board, “let alone hack it”; states was kicked out right after showing Olney how the forum worked

#45000 – new sidebar at Olney’s blog: “No man is exempt from saying silly things; the mischief is to say them deliberately.”

Idjit can't even get his days right. Wednesday is considered 'hump day" not Tuesday. Course he'd know that if he'd ever actually worked a full week.

Tuesdays is when he dances "My Humps" in front of his computer, trying to audition for "America's Got Talent".

Not Fergie's, because that would put him into cardiac arrest, but the slower, sultrier version by Alanis Morissette.

#45075 – screencap of Olney boasting about a large purchase of books and DVDs, while stating a lack of interest in paying his debts (“anyone reading this thinking they have a say in how I spend my money”); he also drops the sidebar from the blog

#45077, 45079 – Jeff Watkins notes Olney always talks about mail ordering comics, wonders why he doesn’t go to the local comic shops; Dave Rothe reminds us Olney screwed up his local shops

#45093 – new Olney blog post: he posts information about libel and slander, and the line “There is a storm brewing....” [implying eventual action]

#45094 – Olney found plagiarising information on libel/slander; screencap of the above

#45095 – Olney makes an unenforceable legal threat to intimidate people into ceasing to pass on data from and screencap his blog (screencapped)

#45097 – Olney deletes “anyone reading this thinking they have a say in how I spend my money” from #45075

#45098 – Olney adds a sidebar saying you agree to his terms (#45095) if you read the blog

#45102 – Sarah Beach questions what Olney plans to charge people with for screencapping his words

#45122 – Olney refers to Dirk Deppey of The Comics Journal as a “peer” and tells him to “get well”; he then addresses his “antagonists” with “You'll never get as much respect from me as I've shown consideration for Dirk here. In fact, I hope you each break out in a rare mutant rash!”

#45151 - screencap of the above

#45152 – Olney invites Lance Boucher to join MySpace [automated invite]

#45164 – the ORCA MySpace page is claiming "ORCA put the 'free' in FCBD back before there was a FCBD!"

#45171 – Olney blog post, screencapped: Olney claims to have had “a number of interactions” with Stan Lee; he supports this claim with a standard celebrity-posing photo with Stan; implies Gail’s career will soon fail [Matt Algren believes the photo was Photoshopped, it was confirmed not to be in #45190]

#45173, 45187 – Sarah Beach and Scott Reed point out the photo is a generic pose with Stan Lee, “the type of picture you see taken at conventions all the time”

#45188 – Joanne reminds us that Olney tried to use a photo of him and Billy Tucci to claim they were good friends before

#45192 – Olney has implied he might be able to invite Steve Ditko to a convention [previously mused in #45151]

#45218 – Olney claims on his blog that he’s thinking of visiting Sacremento; Sarah Beach points out this would cost a fair amount of money (which could go to people he owes)

I shall delight on making 2009 THE BIGGEST legal clusterfuck that has EVER graced comics. And you shall each 'hang' (figuratively) from your own doings

Beware, all, for the lawyers will strike without warning on Christmas Eve!

#45235 – Tom Stillwell reports “I know for a fact Olney has told someone that he often trades e-mails and phone calls with Stan Lee”

#45237 – Gail Simone states Olney claimed that in one of his APA statements too

#45254 – Olney blog post:
- Tells Glenn Barbis he doesn’t care about Glenn’s photos with famous people as “anyone viewing that photo that you got 'lucky' and Mr. [Jack] Black could've cared less who you were or what you do” [that was Glenn’s point in #45201; he was responding to #45171]
- Boasts about meeting Joe Quesada and other pros, refers to “my friends at Marvel”, claims he has friends with “high placed execs” in DC’s “parent corporation” [Time/Warner] and had traded emails with Paul Levitz; “All the 'support' that you [Glenn] mentioned getting from Quesada [#45229, dating from before Quesada was with Marvel] ... I got 5 times as much as that or maybe more”
- Says ORCA gave away “several hundred thousand” free comics, thousands of which were autographed; claims Wizard was considering setting up a price guide for authorised comics because of ORCA; claims ORCA often donated to charities, again claims it inspired Free Comic Book Day; implies anyone who claims he or ORCA cheated anyone will be sued [this has never happened]
- Again claims that the police have never contacted him; implies he’s going to sue Matt Doc Martin [he didn’t]; claims he may be the only thing Gail Simone will be remembered for
- Claims “retail establishment” George’s Wholesale built up a large “pseudo-distributor” network thanks to “ORCA's new issue business of over $2,500.00 a month”; says ORCA alumni Brian Robson can verify this, and that Brian was screwed over by Wholesale over an EC Comics statue
- Claims he has always done “good and credible business” with any local comic store or dealer, claims a friendship with the (deceased) John Julian of Ravenswood, Inc, and how he helped John in his early days [he had a feud with Ravenswood and was banned from their premises, #32860; he may owe them a lot of money, #32835]
- Claims he can afford to go “anywhere on this planet” and has two events he plans to visit before summer ends; talks about other cons he has plans for, says he won’t be going to one in Ohio because “I'd probablybe tempted to punch Tony Isabella in the face if I went there”
- Makes random insults about MacQuarrie

#45255 – more from Olney’s blog:
- he tells Dave Rothe he will be sued, and “I shall delight on making 2009 THE BIGGEST legal clusterfuck that has EVER graced comics. And you shall each 'hang' (figuratively) from your own doings.”
- Glenn Barbis responds to #45254, points out Olney’s claims of support from Quesada is disputed by Olney previously complaining about and attacking Marvel for not doing things for him & ORCA

Reading the recaps has reminded me of his stated intention of attending the San Diego Comic Con at some point.... mainly because I've been keeping my eye on it. What with the sell out of the all the 4 day passes for the General Attendees, I want to get my Pro registration in as soon as that opens online. So thinking about NotWit and what he would do if he seriously meant to attend (I am a writer of fiction after all, so my imagination can stretch that far).... he'd be out of luck on the 4 day (because I'd guess he would miss the 4 day sale window). Which led to wondering if he would try to claim professional status, as a "comics publisher". But since all he has are pieces of cover art for comics he never produced (and that art not yet being paid for), a low res file of a short story he wrote (also not paid for yet).... I don't think he'd meet Comic Con's standards (which they actually DO check and keep current!).

There's just so much comedy in imagining him trying to justify SD CCI giving him pro status, him arguing with them by phone. RO: "But! But.... I've interviewed STAN LEE lots and lots of times!" CCI: "Within the last three years? That's all we care about." RO: "Three years? Why should that count? I've interviewed Stan almost as many times as Mark Evanier!" CCI: "But Mark has actually done new work this year." RO: "But... but... I'm RICK OLNEY!" CCI: "Who?" RO: "I have a Star Wars figure named after me!!" CCI: "Excuse me, I have to take this call coming in. George Lucas wants to coordinate about the Star Wars Fan Film Festival." Click. RO: "I'll SUE YOU! You'll be hearing from my lawyers!"

Thanks for the suggestions, Gail and Bert. Feels kinda creepy, though, to get inspired creatively by you both on this thread about this super-creepy charlatan who pretends to be Vietnam Vet (which just so happens to get this here son of a Vietnam Vet really fired up).

So my question to you both is simple. Since I'm so new, would you please help me start a new thread. Specifically there are two things I'm researching and reviewing:

1. Which comic books and which characters would you think me best suited to try? (Knowing my work from HERO, knowing the indie LAKE CITY starring Sissy Spacek I co-wrote and co-directed with my partner Hunter based on a hanted tale from his childhood, and 3. knowing my background with Narnia.)

Actually, Gail already got my creative juices going; she suggested that Dr. Strange and I may be a good match. (I still haven't come down from that compliment, breathe deep, Perry, just relax...

Looks like I may have a real shot over at Marvel in the near future.

Which leads to my second question. And I would value your input here more than you can imagine.

2. If I were to do a miniseries or graphic novel for MARVEL based on the novel HERO, and I do mean "if," then who would be, in your opinion, the PERFECT ARTIST to help me work on HERO. Please keep in mind the characters from HERO, and please consider that I've always approached the thought of adapting HERO with a big pit in my stomach, because I have so much respect for the artists and the writers and the whole genre of comic books....... It's truly too overwhelming for me think about selecting the right talent to help lead a new guy like me.

Suggestions would be more than welcome. Thank you for you thoughts and consideration.

Sincerely,

Perry Moore,

Some of you may know and others may not. Here is the deal. Alana is back in a place of critical care, acutely so. On Friday I received a call from Hope letting me know that she had been in contact with Mt. Sinai in NY and they infromed her that we need to get there ASAP as Alana is not doing very well. I was in the middle of doing some Christmas shopping before i went into to work and had to pull into an aisle as i was overcome emotionally. I had an odd feeling since Thursday that something was not right and this phone call shed light on what my spirit was feeling. I gathered myself and headed to my car. I called work and asked if there was anything they could do to help me with my hours. They informed me that they could cover things and to get to NY. After getting things squared away with my other little one's Hope and got on the road and headed up here.

We got here in about 3 hours due to traffic and we shocked to see that she was in the state that she was in. Hope had just seen her this past Monday and she was fine. Unfortunately she contracted and infection from the Gortex meshing that was used to cover the wound in her belly. This caused her blood to become septic and her blood pressure dropped dangerously low as well as her body temp being 33 to 34 degree celsius. We were overwhelmed and what made it worse was that the doctors were very concerned as well and they informed us that we could and should prepare ourselves for the worst possible scenario.

The kidney specialist was called in and it was decided that they needed to do an emergency dialysis treatment in order to rinse her blood. The only problem with this is that when a ptient like Alana has low blood pressure it is very dificult to find an area that they can place lines in to get the dialysis treatment set. It 2was a struggle for awhile but the chief of Interventional Radiology came in and he was able to get the line in, that was a very big blessing.

The acidic level in her blood was very high, 13 to be exact, this is a very dangerous ph level. After about an hour of the dialysis it dropped down to about 7.1, a vast improvement.
We were informed by the doctors that this would be a long night.

This morning saw Alana's blood acid levels shoot back up again. It was decided that the best thing that could be done for her was to put her on a CVVH machine. This is another type of dyalisis treatment that runs over a continuos rate as oppossed to the standard 3 hours type machine. The surgical team that did her transplant was present as they began hooking her up to this machine. That's when things went form bad to worse. We, hope and i, stood there completely helpless as the doctors feverishly worked to stabilize Alana. She did not hook up as well to the CVVH as she had to the standard dialysis and her blood pressure dropped down to 35 over 15. Hope and I were beyond knowing how to respond. She was crying and I was attempting to be strong for her. It was like a nightmare being re-lived again. We just dealt with this same situation in September of this year. This time it was worse. I thought for sure she was lost to us. But somehow, she bounced back and got more stable. There are still other issues that need to be addressed with Alana and all thing are moment to moment with her but we are trying to stay strong and all of your prayers and well wishes are a big encouragement to us all.

May God bless you and yours,

Cesar Feliciano, Hope and Alana

#45258 – Glenn Barbis points out Olney’s claims that Quesada got ORCA mentioned in Marvel Vision makes little sense, as Quesada was Marvel Knights editor at the time (later confirmed Knights “actively avoided direct influence over the Marvel line”, #45302)

#45284 – It’s pointed out that Olney’s claim involving George’s Wholesale is unlikely, as the actions described are a violation of the retailer’s agreement with Diamond

#45292 – Glenn Barbis points out ORCA gave away comics to existing readers, not new ones as Olney claims in #45454; he says Olney went into “‘meltdown alert’” when this was pointed out at Comicon

#45296 – Gail says she knows Gareb Shamus (Wizard owner) and will contact him to verify Olney’s claims that Wizard followed ORCA’s lead; points out the Marvel Christmas parties “have sometimes hundreds of guests” and getting into one isn’t too remarkable

#45298 – Paul Storrie points out that Olney got FCBD creator Joe Field’s name wrong in #45254 (calling him “Bill Fields”)

#45333, 45338 – Glenn Barbis links to “the infamous” Comicon thread where Olney said ORCA was tax deductible; he lists all Olney sock puppets in that thread (there are four of them

#45344 – new Olney blog screencap: Olney states “no one will convince me” he isn’t the motivating factor for Free Comic Book Day, still calls Joe Fields “Bill Fields” even while replying to a post that points out the mistake; denies he has made homophobic attacks by saying “queer” isn’t an insult referring to homosexuality; continues to threaten legal action and insult people; says he has “done more to promote comics on a personal level than you can grasp”

who gives a rat's patoot what an oaf like Olney thinks? Guy's got a brain the size of a walnut, just like the lumbering primeval beasts he resembles.

No insult is intended toward our dinosaur friends.

Watch it, Gail. I hear he's going to sign you up for magazine subscriptions and have pizzas delivered to your house.

#45380 – Tom Stillwell disputes Olney’s claim that Unscrewed’s anthology is going to raise money to benefit itself; “All the money we've brought in has gone to help people”; also states “a good chunk of our funds are going towards filing numerous suits against you and Barb in Little Falls City Court and hiring a real live attorney to represent… y”ou'll be getting summoned soon”

#45392 – Samuel Catalino asked Brian Robson about Olney and George’s Wholesale (Olney told people Brian could confirm his claim, #45254):
- Brian reported that he used to buy comics at a discount (40%) from George and gave them to ORCA (who gave them out to 20 members and reimbursed Brian); Olney took over picking up the comics from George, and Brian sent him “200 to 300” dollars; Olney then “[didn’t] come up with the money and the books stay[ed] up at Georges… [Brian] never got all the money back from [Olney]”
- There’s no mention of George’s Wholesale building a “pseudo-distributor” network thanks to ORCA

#45410 – DocAbsurd states that a friend of his ex-wife’s has contacted him (requesting he “ease off on the child support request”) on MySpace, and only seems to have been able to find him because Olney kept deliberately mentioning his real name & connected it with his username; Doc states that Olney’s actions have made his domestic situation more difficult and left him vulnerable to harassment

#45416 – Jeff Watkins states he knows Olney is “not welcome” at Ravenswood Comics (Olney’s claimed otherwise, #45254; he may owe them money, #32835)

#45428 – Scott Reed received an email from a friend, Dave Rawlins, who runs a Yahoo group, stating Olney tried to join the group; Dave, after hearing more about Olney, didn’t let him in; Scott also notes Olney claims he has friends in the industry but he’s never seen anyone in the industry defend him

#45446 – new Olney blog post, screencapped: it has a giant “No Bullies” picture, and links to a blog that mentions “Herd Behaviour” that gets used by bullies; complains about being bullied, threatens legal action again and claims again that his side hasn’t been heard

#45457 – Matt Algren believes Olney’s ‘bullies’ post was made because he wasn’t allowed into the Yahoo group

#45461 – Scott Reed states that Dave saw Tony Isabella’s warning about Olney, and Scott just confirmed for him that it was true

#45481 – Olney is found swiping wholesale an article by Jerry Whitworth [from Sequential Tart, linked to #45487] for his blog, one that disputes his claim to have created Comics in the Classroom [screencapped at #45499]

#45488, 45491 – Jerry Whitworth and Sequential Tart are informed about the theft

#45507 – Olney’s blog sidebar appears to be claiming he’s not stealing or taking credit for other people’s work that he puts on the blog, but at the same time bans any “third party” from copying any part of his blog

Alana Kay Feliciano March 26, 2007 to December 20, 2009.

Today after a long struggle and battle after battle Alana went to be with the Lord at 4:20. Hope and I held her in our arms and I felt the last breath escape from her chest. The grief that Hope and I felt I was and is beyond compare. We knew that things were not going well late this morning. We could see that the doctors had tried all that they knew to do and it still was not helping. The funny thing is that when we arrived in NY on Friday afternoon we felt like this could possibly be our last trip to Mt. Sinai but we did not vocalize it to each other. As the hours progressed and one day turned into the next with no improvement, we looked at each other and knew that our little fighter had no more strength to keep fighting. The doctors tried bravely throughout the night and the nurses moved with amazing skill and efficiency but no treatment was enough and she simply stopped responding. As Hope and I sat in the room this morning we looked at each other and both agreed that she was just simply to tired to continue. Our hearts ached as we vocalized the next words, "it's time to let her go." We were crushed beyond belief. We believed God would heal her and many prayed for her healing and yet it was not be here in this side of the veil. We surrendered her into the Lord's hands and prepared to spend our last hours with her. We put on Spongebob Square Pants, Alana loved that show, and my daughter Ashlee sang her favorite song to her, Jesus Loves Me, over the phone. We then had the nurses take her off of the life sustaining medicines and had the nurses clean her up and put on her favorite color shirt, pink. She looked so cute all dressed up with no tubes sticking out of her it was hard to know that she had been sick at all. Next the nurses picked her up and put her into Hope's arms were she waited with a blanket to swaddle her up in. Hope gently wrapped her up in it and she looked like such a little angel. Finally the doctor came in for a final check of her vital signs and the nurse disconnected the ventilator.

Hope held her tight and washed her face with her tears. She then handed her to me and I held her. I knew that seconds later she was gone. What followed was a deep sadness that escaped from the core of my being. I had never felt pain and grief such as this and I just kept holding her lifeless body until I could get the sobbing under control again. I then handed her to nurse and she put her back on her bed. Hope and I just fell into each others arms and cried and cried. How we loved our Alana. How she loved us. And how, she caused others to love her. Many were the nurses that were touched by her life. many were the nurses the filed into her room just before she left us to express how much Alana had showed them to have joy in even the worst of circumstances. We feel blessed and honored that God privileged us with Alana to show us joy amidst the worst of circumstances. No matter how sick Alana had felt felt she always had a smile and a giggle ready to share and brighten the day of anyone who came in contact with her.

Hope asked me what we were to do now. i looked at her and said, "we'll fight just like she did, we'll smile like she did, and we'll love others just as she did."

We know that Alana is today dancing, singing and in perfect health with God in Heaven. Thank you all so much for being a part of Alana's life and loving her even if may have never seen her. Hope and thank you and love you all for it. Be blessed,

Cesar,

I don't know what to say. I am without words.

You and your family are in all our thoughts. I feel like we all knew that beautiful, lovely baby, and I can't get that image of her dancing in her hospital bed out of my mind.

That was a unique, special, amazing child, born to unique, special, amazing parents.

If there's anything we can do...anything. Please let us know.

Thank you for sharing her with us a little bit. She's going to live on in all our hearts and make us all a little better and kinder.

I am so, so sorry.

Be blessed,

Cesar Feliciano

Cesar, I can't begin to imagine what it would be like if I lost one of my children, but through the window into your lives you've selflessly given us, you've allowed us to witness just how special and filled with joy your little girl was and is, and I'm truly torn up inside for you and your wife. I pray the pain will ease when it is time, and you will be able to laugh again when it is time, and that you will feel her close to your hearts, all of the time.

Love and condolences,

Here's a little good news....

I got a check in the mail a few days ago. You may remember that a couple of years ago, I was asked to draw three pages of Licensable Bear™ #4 for About Comics. Well, it seems Nat Gertler was able to sell a bunch of copies of the book as collectibles on Ebay, due to the fact that it included the first comic book appearance of Barack Obama, and being a generous and ethical soul, he paid out royalties to everyone involved. He was under no legal obligation to do so, but he did it anyway.

The amount of money wasn't a lot, but the underlying principle and message is huge. Nat respects and values the people who work for him, and he compensates and rewards them to the best of his abilities. It's really nice to be appreciated, and I'm happy to work for Nat any time he asks. In fact, I'm working on something now, and it's a hoot.

If Rick Olney had that same attitude, this thread would not exist. More importantly, he would be far more successful and his conventions would be popular.

Thanks, Nat! I should have some character sketches to you in the next couple of days.

NatGertler

(rewriting a message I swear I posted earlier.)

He was under no legal obligation to do so, but he did it anyway.
Actually, I was under legal obligation to make some sort of payment, as the established About Comics practice is to pay royalties; in the absence of a contract, established practice would be assumed.
Admittedly, there would've been no real leverage to come after me with if I hadn't paid, the amounts weren't worth going to court over. And I could've reasonably paid a far smaller portion; there is no contractual consideration for the fact that items are selling for 12-50 times cover, although it would've been slimy for me not to take that into account; I could have taken a cut of the royalties as writer of the work, and it would've been totally non-slimy for me to have done so.
What's sad is how often I get thanked for sending those checks. It's not a favor I'm doing, it's an obligation. It's sad how often others (whether Olney-like wannabes or companies who keep publishing based on their failure to pay for what they've published) fail to live up to their obligations.

Dude, I accepted a straight page rate, and I have no idea what your "established practice" might be. In my book, you went beyond what was necessary. The fact that some others can't be bothered to reach a minimum baseline of behavior is a whole 'nother thing.

Oh, right, you got a page rate. GIVE ME BACK MY MONEY!

:)

Technically you're correct - in your case, I wasn't so legally obligated. But I did offer you a low page rate on the assumption that this was going to be a minor-selling book. When that assumption proved false, I was glad to cut you in on the win.

(And having treated you respectfully, I could then come to you with a straight face to ask you to participate in the current project. And to those looking on: yes, the project is secret, but no, it isn't something interesting or amazing. Just secret for now.)

On the subject of people who pay people in a timely fashion (unlike Olney), I gotta sing the praises of one Colleen Doran.

She paid me for my latest guest blog! Which I wrote for the fun of it, because it was off something she and I had been talking about in email. She rocks!

I then celebrated by spending the princely price on pizza!

Seriously, I did not expect it. But she felt it was appropriate, and even if the amount was small, I like making a big deal about it because it shows how sterling her character is! She is THE COOLEST! (I'm glad to have her as a friend.)
