Blake, I agree with Gail, though. Cool job closing that dangling matter.

I did the same when I realized after 2 weeks (the same 2 weeks I was moderating him down on the Dixonverse board) that he wasn't going to cough up a mere $35 to have me rewrite his crappy front text. And after that amount of time, I didn't want to do it. But I also didn't want "the job" hanging out there, since I had sent him a formal invoice before beginning.

His reaction to my "Pro Forma Termination of Job Agreement"? He said that now that he'd seen my "true colors" there was not chance that I would ever work for his company.

Like it was supposed to crush my dewy dreams.

Heh. Peanut brain.

Dan DeCarlo is unfortunately deceased. He was a giant in cartooning and comics, but rarely got the credit he deserved. The character JOSIE was based on his wife, and he was responsible more than anyone for the look of the Archie books for many years, I believe.

There are a few books about him, and the one I love best was written and designed by the equally great Bill Morrison, and covers his career and life in a warm, funny way. Guy was an absolute genius.

I was blessed enough to get to work with him in a way that never really saw print directly. Some of my earliest published works were Bart Simpsons stories for Bongo. At the time, Bongo had hired Dan to do layouts for these stories, to teach new Bongo artists his layout skills, partly because Archie was not treating him properly at the time, if I remember correctly.

These layouts were STUNNING. They were wildly off-model, somewhere between the animated Simpsons show and his usual Archie style. Everything was much more 3-d than usual. People were elongated and a bit more human looking. And it turns out, he didn't watch the Simpsons and didn't really know the characters.

That's what made it so surreal. The craftsmanship is impeccable, but the characters seem very reimagined, which I fricking LOVED. I lost the faxed copies of those layouts which bugs me to this day. But it was unbelievable to see him work off of my silly scripts. I honestly couldn't have been more thrilled if Neal Adams or Jack Kirby (bless his soul!) had drawn a story I wrote. It felt that nuts.

Great, great talent, and the guy KNEW how to sell a gag.

The reason I asked is because we are watching Weakest Link and the contestants name was Dan and he said that he was a cartoonist for Archie and Veronica comics. He was very young maybe early 30's and I remembered that D'Carlo was one of the creators for that......could it be his son carrying on for him or do you all know?

And yes Dan DCarlo was fantastic, I have loved those comics since I was a kid. I had not heard that he had died though and thats sad. What was the reason he passed do you know?

What in the world happened that triggered this sudden attempt to whitewash the existence of Tightlip and any of Olney's comments? Did people actually follow through with a case against him? If so who and for what? To my knowledge Olney hasn't broken the law so everything would be via civil court but this whitewash just seems above and beyond, especially since it doesn't really help his case. Exposed attempts at a cover-up rarely go well for the one doing the covering.

Anyway, it looks like he forgot his myspace page: http://www.myspace.com/orcafresh

Enjoy. No frothing at the mouth today. Just a lot of nice quiet fun, a discussion of trademark and copyright law, and a debate on the merits of Mike W. Barr's "Batman and the Outsiders" and the role of whimsy in comics.

Trollney has not graced us with his presence, but I'm sure he's one of the many guests browsing the forum. We can tell because every time somebody finds another sample of his idiocy, he runs to delete it.

Oh well, it gives him something to do between dodging process servers and hiding from the mailman.

Reminds me of an exchange from Steve Martin's "Roxanne"
C.D. Bales:I really admire your shoes.
Drunk #1: What?
C.D. Bales: I love your shoes.
Drunk #2: What do ya mean?
C.D. Bales: And I was just thinking: as much as I really admire your shoes, and as much as I'd love to have a pair just like them, I really wouldn't want to be IN your shoes at this particular time and place.

He deleted all the bad stuff from the myspace blog some time ago. There were like 5 or 6 posts during December that were libelous or nearly so. And nasty.

They were in the Google cache for a while after he deleted them and I totally spaced out on saving them. I looked now and there are only a handful of his deleted blogs in the cache but none of them are of the nasty sort. Well except for this part from a blog on November 30

"So after requesting assistance, I then moved over to looking for the next elusive action figure from my experiences. I wrote of it in my last blog. The Ric Olie (Rick Olney) STAR WARS: Episode One starship pilot! The store owner and I never stopped chatting with each as that 30 minutes turned into 45, and as you can imagine ... I had to share my little known Star Wars trivia fact with him on how Ric Olie came to be. I also very quickly noticed that he had a very low price on the figures. Specifically, the Ric Olie figure was underpriced. He explained that he kept one on the shelf but that he had more in storage. I told him I'd buy them all regardless of the mark-up price; explaining how hard they are to come by. He actually had them priced at $4.99 each. Upon my urging, he went and researched them in his price guide. I believe that he was glad to learn this, because he discovered they book for more like $18.00 dollars each.

Contray to the lower dregs and most ugly myth spinning sociopathic types in our industry and hobby, I don't cheat people. He thanked me too! As he cashed me out at his register, he told me that he was giving me the Ric Olie figure .. IF .. I'd autograph one for him on my return visit. Smart businessman, this guy is! I'm headed back there this Saturday! And now I have to clear another shelf for actions figures.

[Note to my pal, Doc Absurd: Let me know if you need any specific regarding action figures. If I can't pick them up for you at this new store in Herkimer ...then they might be in the quantity that I just had dropped in my lap. Any of my other old ORCA pals only need email me too! ]"

The site is backed up twice daily, so the thread posts were NOT erased.

Blake is still under contract to TightLip Entertainment for EVERTIME. Additionally, I am moving ahead to have an artist complete the began character descriptions. Plus, I have to mention that Blake's contract has a 30 day conditional provision and is NOT revocable.

As we contracted Blake and NOT Ms. Ronee Garcia Bourgeois, we'll begin also preparing a nuisance lawsuit for interference. Kindly be aware. Thank you.

The first line is in regards to the fact that I went on the MMC board earlier today and deleted all of the posts in which I discussed my property, Evertime. My agent, Ronee, assures me that my contract clearly states that either party can terminate the contract with 30 days written notice. My earlier statement is that notice, and a hard copy will be mailed shortly.

Furthermore, Rick agreed to involve Ronee, in her capacity as my agent, in all negotiations regarding me at the time the contract was drafted, and we have saved messages from him to that effect, and therefore he has no grounds to consider her involvement a "nuisance," legally or otherwise.

I have two of the books about his work, and I highly recommend both of them.

The one you're referring to, Gail, is Innocence and Seduction: The Art of Dan DeCarlo. It's a huge, beautiful book covering his life's work.

Amazon link (http://www.amazon.com/Innocence-Seduction-Art-Dan-DeCarlo/dp/1560977108/sr=8-1/qid=1168482583/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-0278091-8615226?ie=UTF8&s=books)

The other is part of Alex Chun's pinup artists series from Fantagraphics: The Pin-up Art of Dan DeCarlo. It's a collection of one-panel gags he did for men's magazines from the 50s.

Amazon Link (http://www.amazon.com/Pin-up-Art-Dan-DeCarlo/dp/1560976195/sr=8-5/qid=1168482583/ref=sr_1_5/002-0278091-8615226?ie=UTF8&s=books)

Plus it says "Blake Petit's Evertime " . That is what I'm seeing. Plus its all posted on the Journal you have Blake. Its your project. Plus how the hell is that ever gonna be produced ? Its easy to sign you to a contract and make ya sit there but I still wonder how he could possibly even produce this book ? How many creators would be taken on it ?

I just recieved the following message from Mr. Olney regarding my statement of earlier this evening:

The first line is in regards to the fact that I went on the MMC board earlier today and deleted all of the posts in which I discussed my property, Evertime. My agent, Ronee, assures me that my contract clearly states that either party can terminate the contract with 30 days written notice. My earlier statement is that notice, and a hard copy will be mailed shortly.

Furthermore, Rick agreed to involve Ronee, in her capacity as my agent, in all negotiations regarding me at the time the contract was drafted, and we have saved messages from him to that effect, and therefore he has no grounds to consider her involvement a "nuisance," legally or otherwise.heh, more empty threats, from his *ahem* "legal department"

Come on, you know you winced when you read their names the first time. Granted, execution is everything, and even the lamest concept can be turned into gold, but it does help if you're not starting with such an obvious contrivance.

For the record, I liked what Barr & Aparo did with them in the book, but the names were painful.

I'll have you know Batman and The Outsiders (BATO for us true fans) is possibly my favorite team book of all time.

Well, the web site is deviantart.com (http://www.deviantart.com)

But I think we should go about this the right way. Maybe someone who is already a member there should approach the administrator first and ask their opinion before posting the warning.

But I do feel that artists should be warned. If anyone knows of any other sites like Deviantart, it would be a good idea to contact them as well. Get the word out so that others know what to expect if they do business with Rick Olney.

And I love Tawky Tawny, too. And Mister Mind! I wish we could still have goofy fun comics like those. In fact, I'm actually working on creating one. It has a talking dog. And rampaging garden gnomes. Fun is good. Whimsy is good. Painful puns are good.

Meh, Meltdown is a tad overpriced on everything but comics, but they are USUALLY well stocked. Golden Apple is actually more fun IMO. But then again, Comics Ink is the best shop in town if you're a regular.

Is Meltdown a smaller sized shop? I don't mean a small retailer, but like half the real estate size of Golden Apple or less? If so, I think that was the shop I enjoyed going to the most, but still wound up frequenting Golden Apple when I lived in Los Angeles.

Outsiders is great "leave your brain at the door" fun. If you stop and think about it it's craptastic. Especially Looker.

But GeoForce is the bestest hero ever.

GeoForce?

And for those of you who follow comic book announcements, I have one in there that may surprise the one person that actually knows me in this thread....

Marty, we have gotta talk.

I read your blog and came across this:

'Promises of a salaried job with the ICC'

Did Moby inform you that the ICC was my project? Did Moby inform you that all the projects were cuz of my brainstorming? Did Moby happen to mention that . . .

I was gonna do everything for the ICC for free!?!

There was never any mention of monetary compensation for me. I was gathering contributors and lying to them all about his 'lack' of involvement and designing the T-shirts.

For free!

Like I said, we gotta talk. One, we need to compare some notes, and two, I want you on-board.

Oh, I just love it. Moby Prick fucks me again.

It's estimated that he owes over 100,000 to many, MANY different creators.
Here is a link to a thread over at the Comic Book Resources Form
http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?t=156451
Please take this note seriously and warn all of the creators on this board to beware of this crooked individual.
Thank you.
Joanne Ellen Mutch

Can I just say that I think you're a sick b**** in a GOOD way?

Guys! I've just found exclusive footage of Rick Olney when he found out he had been temporarily banned from the CBR Forums!

About 2/3 of the way through, you see the "light" dawning, as he realizes "oh crap, I can go DELETE my vile vomit spew" and thinks he's okay...

You know, that video is just damn scary. Got a translation for what the weird kid is screaming?

I'd really be interested to see a timeline for all of Olney's promises, lies, and deceptions. DocAbsurd already showed us the lying scum's actions into the week around Christmas Eve one year, that was beautiful in shooting down a lot of Olney's "facts". Imagine that on a larger scale?

I'm not masochist enough to try putting one together though.

Is Meltdown a smaller sized shop? I don't mean a small retailer, but like half the real estate size of Golden Apple or less? If so, I think that was the shop I enjoyed going to the most, but still wound up frequenting Golden Apple when I lived in Los Angeles.

Well, I dunno, it kind of depends. BOTH Meltdown and Golden Apple have moved in the last five years. Meltdown was in a smallish space, they now have a HUGE space.

Golden Apple has moved in the last month, and I haven't been to the new store, but they say it's bigger...

I suspect it's been noted, but googling Tightlip entertainment to see their websiter gives what I suspect is an accurate representation of the state of his business.

He wants to play Unreal Tournament, and his computer won't boot. He mentions something about not wanting to wait, but wanting to win.

If my friend Geoff was nearby, I'm sure he could translate the whole thing.

Actually, according to the error message it's:

"The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator, terryriv@magixpc.com and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

That's the e-mail for the SERVER admin. Not the website. Totally different thing. The server admin takes care of the physical server that the website is hosted on, and has nothing to do with the actual website.

Well, anyone that knows me at all knows I can hold a grudge. He pissed me off, and I swore to do whatever I could to make hum pay for it. I have free time, and I donate it to the cause.

More so the pity for peanut. He shoulda taken Ronee's warnings, but nooooo.. He calls ME, a former soldier, all sorts of names? He insults women? He attacks professionals? And thinks he can hide it all?

Uh-uh. Not. A. Fucking. Chance. I am spreading his shit like FERTILIZER, BABY! And a giant boot up his ass will grow from the results.

I told pRick that he should not have threatened me. He did it again and again, even here. Well, I am still standing, ass-munch. Now you prepare to pick yourself up off the metaphorical floor.

I am amazed how many people want copies for posterity. And I will keep sending them to ANYONE that asks.

I loved your email exchanges. Hysterical stuff. He's so insane. It would be funny if he could be locked in a room where he couldn't hurt anyone.

He is a deluded moron. No sense of what the real world is like at all.

But the thing that first got me is how he, like so many others, think a keyboard gives you freedom to say things you would not dare repeat in person. I hate people like that on the internet. I remember one asshole from Kentucky who was nice in person, but a dick online. He could have said anything when I was in his face, but chose not to. I have no respect for people like that.

I remember in BASIC overhearing the soldiers from my platoon on guard duty talking about others in the barracks. When they got to me, one said "That Martin sure has a mouth on him." The other said, "Yeah, but give him props, he won't back down."

I got pushed around when I was a little kid. I did not like it very much. One day, I pushed back. Hard. I challenged one kid that had been picking on me to a fight after my work shift. (I started work very young) He showed up....with 3 friends. I figured I was going to get my ass handed to me by all of them, so I did not want to throw the first punch. We talked trash back and forth for a bit, then he made to leave. I threw caution to the wind, said "hell with that!" and decided to throw down. A minute of two later I am bouncing his head off of the concrete asking the others if they wanted a piece.

That guy and I are actually good friends now, oddly enough.

Moral of the story...I hate being bullied. And I don't care what you have on your side, I will fight and fight dirty to defend me and mine.

Some 52 year old fat fuckwit with no moral compass or talent? No fucking challenge to me. But that doesn't mean I will be taking his shit either. And if you are going to treat women like that, I have even less patience.

NO ONE is allowed to mistreat women around me. Period.

So, pRick, watch your goddamn mouth and apologize for acting the ass.

Or wait to see what I have in store for round 2.

I told you bastards not to hit 5,000 posts without me!

This is the thread that never ends! Yes, it goes on and on my friends! Some people started posting, not knowing what it was, and they'll continue to posting now forever just because this is the thread that never ends...

Your face never ends! Take that! :D

It's a fine name! I actually had (had) a great-uncle named Urban Justice Busiek, who was a pediatrician in St. Louis. With a name like that, he really shoulda fought crime.

Was he a gorilla, too? I bet that went over well with the kids!

I don't think I have any pun named characters.

Not exactly "punny," but never forget Ratbag!

Ok, we are talking about creators with class, right?

You don't need to apolotize for not liking Bludhaven. It was written by Jimmy Palmiotti and Justing Gray. they are two of my favorite writers. They wrote the excellent series Monolith and are currently writing one of my favorite series currently in print, Jonah Hex. Jimmy Palmiotti is the nices profressional I ever met at a convention, seriously! And Justing Gray comes off as a heck of a nice guy online.

Lot of respect for both.

That being said, Battle for Bludhaven sucked. It was horrible. And I went to their boards and said so (keep in mind I regularly go there to tell them how much I love their other stuff so it was not like I was being a troll.

Justin Gray agreed. Well, maybe not that strongly, but he said that they had about half the time to write Battle for Bludhaven than they normally do to write a comic, and he was not happy with the final product. He was genuinely concerned that people would decide wether to base some of his future projects based on Bludhaven.

Anyway, this is the cool part. After I told them I didn't like it, I got an e-mail from Justin Gray. He said he was sorry that Bludhaven was not up to my expectations and if I gave him my address he would make it up to me. I was pretty sure he was not mad at me so I gave him my address. 3 days later I got a free copy of Freedom Fighters #1 by Gray and Palmiotti and a #1 of Red Sonja by them.

THAT is a class act!

Dude, I wish every time I made fun of a subpar comic online someone would send me a free good comic in the mail! Battle for Blüdhaven was, at the very least, goofy and entertaining. Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters have made up for every one of its predecessor's failing's, though. That book is kickass wrapped in awesome.

Momma

You saw Dan Parent, who's written and drawn for Archie Comics for at least fifteen years or so. He was also behind such Oddball Archie titles as JUGHEAD'S TIME POLICE, ARCHIE'S R/C RACERS and JUGHEAD'S DINER.

As for Dan DeCarlo's death, he was in his eighties, and had a number of health problems, but those of us that knew him think that the emotional and physical strain that Archie Comics put him through when he was trying to get some sort of payment for creating JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS and co-creating SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH -- they refused to give him any more work -- was what ultimately did him in. And this was to the man who essentially established their "house style" for half a century.

Tragic.

Good luck with a criminial case. Considering this crosses states lines, it theoritically could be a federal matter. The main problem though is finding anyone, federal or state that would want to go through the trouble of investigating and prosecuting Olney. Thats why if any compensation, one way or the other is to come about, a civil case is your best chance. Not saying criminial isn't worth trying but just go in recognizing that a DA may not want to bother.

As an aside, considering Olney's tendancy to screw first in all matters involving money, what are the odds he pays his taxes correctly?

One the other hand, some of his posts to some of us, especially the women, are still jaw-dropping horrific. Obviously, he was going for shock to bait us, but still, I still find it hard to believe that anyone would dare come up with such noxious bile.

Aloha,

Scott!

P.S.: Thursday night, Nat Gertler, Jim MacQuarrie and I will be attending the annual business meeting of C.A.P.S. (Comic Art Professional Society), Southern California's organization for cartoonists primarily working in the print media, including comic books. Believe me, we're gonna spill ALL the beans on Rick Olney's and Tightlip Entertainment's "wolf ticket" scams, and dozens of pros -- including Sergio Aragonés, Stan Sakai, Bill Morrison, Tone Rodriguez "...and all the rest..." -- will be present to scoop 'em up. We'll also provide a write-up for the C.A.P.S. monthly newsletter. -- SS!

I do have to say that beyond mocking you for being overwieght I still can't believe he'd type out that you , Waid and Busiek were holding him and other young talents down. Keeping them from spots in the industry.

Remember, in Dick's twisted world, every bad thing is somebody else's fault. If he can't get a break, it's because somebody is conspiring against him. Dick can never be wrong, can never accept responsibility for anything and can never ever back down. Admitting a mistake or flaw is a death-blow to the core of his being.

The comment about us holding back the young 'uns I found particularly amusing. He meant it as a slam, of course, but not only is it incredibly untrue, but to include me with bigshot industry talents like Kurt and Mark and Tony...well, remember that old game, "One Of These Things Is Not Like The Others"? Comics probably comprise only about ten per cent of my cartooning activities...although that's about to change in the next few months... Anyway, I'm now using Olney's quote as my signature as some sort of badge commemorating his off-kilter idiocy.

Pretty much quoted for accurasy. I can't help but agree. I mean he freakin blamed Gail and the YABS board for his downfall. In a comment to him that set him off I told him it wasn't plebes , commies , Gail , Rich Johnston that did the damage to Tightlip. It was his own actions that started the ball rolling.

Hey everyone! This is my first post here so please excuse me if this has already been mentioned but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Mr Olney seems to have removed his original posts from this thread (is that right?) and while I am only a lowly lurker (at least till now) I thought it may be prudent to hold onto the remainder.

Anyway, I have saved the remaining posts he has made here, both in text and jpeg format, in case anyone wants them later on down the track. :)

I have been making a valiant effort to try and catch up with this thread since my return from Holiday, but apart from getting little to no work done at the office for the past couple of days, i haven't been able to.

That said, as a big comic fan who has generally not paid too much attention to the behind-the-scenes comic industry itself (I have this whole fourth wall/ suspension of disbelief issue) I just wanted to let the people out there affected by this guy know that while reading this thread I have been touched by the camaraderie that is evident around here. The fact that fairly well known names can stand up and speak out on behalf of those a little further down the ladder of success is very heartening.

And thanks to Gail for starting this thread and speaking out - you are obviously awesome (the rest of you are fucktards though :evilsmile ).
While I was a fan before (VU was the best part of IC for me), I would be honored to be called one of Gail's "plebes" now. :D

God I just realized I sound like Dr Phil or something, how awful!

Someone contact the Law&order writers, this case would be GOLD to them on one of their versions....lots of twists and turns...

True story about Mark Waid:

A few years back, when the Hourman comic was in danger of cancellation due to low sales, I saw Mark Waid buy a stack of copies of the book from a dealer at the San Diego Comic Con. He then stood in the aisle and handed them to random passers-by. "Hey, wanna read a really good comic?" He had, as far as I know, nothing whatsoever to do with the book, did not stand to make a nickel off it, bu the took it upon himself to promote Hourman simply because he thought it was worth promoting.

I thought it was the coolest and classiest thing I'd ever seen a comics pro do. Until now.

Wow. That is amazing. And if I hadn't chosen a career in the social field that pays so-so, I would have loved to do the same for the Hourman book. And for PowerCompany.

Maybe after this crusade to bring down Olney people can start one to make Archie Comics give Carlo his due. Does he have any family left that could need the money owed ?

Sadly, I fear crusades like that would prove to be much more difficult in terms of gaining industry support than the current anti-Olney campaign.

Olney's outlandish behavior makes it easy for everyone to see him as a villain, but when it comes to bigger cases, with even more money involved (DeCarlo and Archie, the Siegel estate and the Superboy copyright, getting DC to credit Bill Finger as Batman's co-creator, etc.) you'll see less vocal support from the pro community than in the Olney case. With the Olney situation it's easy to see things in black and white, getting support from people who never had any interaction with Olney, but when it comes to a situation where bigger (and real) publishers are involved, many people decide to adopt a "wait-and-see" attitude instead of getting involved.

BTW, I'm not saying that DC and Marvel haven't taken steps to correct errors made in the past, they've certainly done so (DC more than Marvel, I believe), but there are still some wrongs that need to be addressed.

In the case of DC Comics, I respectfully (but strongly) disagree. The company is extremely arbitrary as to what wrongs it will even attempt to right.

The same may well be true of Marvel, but my personal experiences with Marvel in recent years have been much much better.

Then why's he trying to keep younger talent like me and Waid out of the industry?

That crumb-catcher!

Allegedly he is 52.

That's interesting.

I'm not finding any Richard Olney in Mohawk, NY under that age. There's a Richard M. Olney in his 70s.

In fact, doing a state-wide search on Richard Olney doesn't give me anyone at that age. They are either much older or much younger.

Or could it be a pen name? *laughs hysterically*

He should actually be in Herkimer, NY.

I have had little luck with Zaba Search, but I may call a friend of mine on the force in Long Island, NY and see if he can help.

Maybe Olney is not his real name.

Maybe his real name is Magnus Grimoire.

Or maybe he named himself after Ric Olie from Star Wars.

Don't ask about the math, it's quite complex. But that's your answer.

Start counting.

Herkimer is the County for Mohawk, New York where he claims to reside. I've been talking to the circuit court clerk out there.

One of the earlier posts gave his address, the converted funeral parlor. Would that help?

Here it is: 70 W. Main St. Mohawk, NY 13407

This is from the domain registration for the TightLip website, according to Bright-Raven's digging.

And I still think tax evasion is an interesting avenue to pursue.

Mohawk, I believe, is a village IN Herkimer, which is in Herkimer county.

You do, "Wil"? Well, "Wil", what are you hiding? Where do you get off using a pen name, "Wil"?

Well, not that I want to derail this thread, but...

CrossGen had a working ethic that people working there accepted and then pulled away from.

Wow, what an asshole thing to say about all those people who were shafted by Alessi. I have friends who went through a good year of hell because of CrossGen not paying them. Making Alessi and CrossGen somehow a victim of disloyal employees is the biggest heap of bullshit I have come across in a while.

If I ever pitched a story about "a potentially dangerous criminal who lives in a funeral home", every editor/publisher in comics would reject it on the basis of the concept being waaay too contrived.

Well, every editor/publisher except one. Y'know, the smelly, sociopathetic, criminal one. The one who lives in a funeral home in Mohawk, New York.

Aloha,

Scott!

Don't worry about pitching stories, Mr. Shaw. Your career will soon be ruined anyway, once Rick's attorney finishes his Happy Meal.
