What the comics industry really needs is a CBLDF-like organization to assist creators against publishers. Kind of a Comics Creators Legal Offense Fund.

I know there are huge obstacles to the formation of such an organization. The publishers wouldn't support it as they have the CBLDF...and, sadly, many of the fans wouldn't support creators over publishers.

But, when you look at how comics creators have historically and currently been screwed over by publishers large, small, and, in the case of Olney, non-existent, the need for such an organization is obvious.

I'm going to chime in on the issue of Vietnam vets not bragging about their service.

My grand-uncle Lou served in Vietnam though you'd never know it. The guy doesn't talk about it. Ever. I had no idea until I was in my late teens when I learned through other family members that because he was latino/Mapuche he appeared more asian than most and for that reason he was shoved deep into the jungle, up on the front lines. He may have had something to do with flamethrowers because he kept a key chain with a mini replica on it.

Before he signed up he was a gregarious, happy guy. When he came back he was totally changed, reserved and quiet with this constant tension. The change was so drastic that it convinced my dad to stay at his job in the UN instead of signing up.

My dad mentioned going to see Apocalypse Now with Lou and throughout the film he would look over to see him nodding slightly. During the village scenes near the end he was shaking.

I wasn't sure I could believe these stories until we were visiting Jersey one summer, I woke up early, right at dawn. I was sitting up on the couch looking around for the time and then I looked out the back porch door window. One second I was staring at the wood lined yard, the next, he was there, out of bloody nowhere doing a perimeter. He wasn't sneaking about or pulling any weird stances, he just walked, silent and focused on the ground near his feet. It was like watching a ghost and it scared the living hell out of me.

I later learned he'd done that for years.


Good men and women went through hell over there and Dick taking those experiences to prop up his shitty business practices is despicable. Absolutely despicable.


My dads cousin went over there as well and served. He too came back a changed man. He would tell my dad few stories but he said it was something he couldn't get outta his mind. My dad said he would wake up in the middle of the night and smoke. He never smoked til he came back...but he would smoke at night to try and ease his fears.

He wasn't the same man as my dad would say. Yeah he was home but he was a haunted person and it showed.

I think that those that are in the SELF PUBLISHING level NEED it. I'm not a lawyer, but I would gladly work with whoever wanted to help build a panel to create this, and govern it in the long term.

As one of the original "screwee's" that Rick took advantage of, I find it amazing, no... ironic that he continues his ways. The man's a total loon. He professes and demands loyalty, and responsiveness.. and then does the exact opposite when confronted about things... such as paying.

I, along with a fellow creator, saw thru his endless promises of nothing, and opted out of the whole project. Sadly, not before producing a nice little cache of work for him, that (yes) still hasn't been paid for. In fact, as I look at it now, if he DOES produce one single book (or even page) of work, then by his own contract... and he's probably revised it a few times since my tenure... he'd have to pay. So I think in his demented mind, he figures, if he just collects the work, and never actually prints it... it's all free!!

My one consolation at the time of my leaving, was that I was told my departure had caused him chest pains. I'm not one to wish or inflict pain or hurt on anyone, but in this case, I felt justified at chuckling at the thought. Obviously it wasn't enough of a life altering event for him to alter his ways... so.. I don't mind bringing it up here whatsoever.

As for Kurt's generous offer in regards to some sort of legal retribution on Olney, Gail, I'd need some info so I can sent Kurt a more detailed listing of what happened, or at least what my bill is with Tricky Ricky. If you could send that along, I'd be most grateful.

To Rick I say, SUE ME!! Then at least you'd have to actually show up and face a person. And if you bring along your "laughing lawyer" (I swear, he kept telling me that his lawyer would laugh at our complaints at not being paid)... we'll have to see how much he'll enjoy working for you for free as well!!

Just thought I'd post this. Rick has several times tried to use the very nice Dennis (former President of Orca and according to Rick, his closest friend) as verifying his own bullshit.

Trouble is, Dennis remembers it differently in his letters to me, and was very disturbed when I showed him that Rick had tried (feebly, like a scumbag coward) to blame the whole thing on Dennis, who had nothing to do with the fiascos at the con. In fact, Dennis has sent me several very nice emails apologizing for the various embarrassing amateur hour mistakes at the con, even those he had zero to do with whatsoever.

Here's a letter from me to Dennis when I was trying to collect the long promised reimbursement. It's one of two where Dennis, and I'm sorry to bring him into this but Rick keeps claiming Dennis will verify his bullshit, admits that Rick has had problems paying in the past.

Another random legal thought, but I think Onley's arrogance is partly based on the assumption that he set up Tightlips in such a way that any lawsuits that where to be filed would cease to have any meaning if he where to dissolve Tightlips. However, between his posts, admissions, actions and apparent inability to get a lawyer, I am thinking he isn't as bulletproof as he thinks.

On an unrelated note, I managed to get registered
again at the DC website and I've been visiting off and
on under my real name. It usually takes me a little

Makes me wish I had saved all the mail I used to receive when I was putting together letter pages for various Topps comics. There were some incredible letters from Olney wherein he would rudely demand the company send him all sorts of free stuff for his "non-profit" organization. They were scary reading back then and would likely be more so today.
