Yes, he's driving us all away from any kind of behavior remotely like his own.

Here's something fun for those of you coming to Wizard World Chicago next month.

Unscrewed! will be holding daily silent auctions at my table in Artists Alley. We'll place out a couple items a day, take written bids, and at the end of the day announce the winners. They'll go home with a nifty item in hand and we'll take a nice donation to help stiffed creators.

I have stuff like a Steve Rude signed sketchbook available, original signed art by Tim Seeley, and a lovely handmade doll by Mercedes Lackey.

So if you're a fan going to WWC, please stop by and bid. Heck, even buy a couple of copies of my books with letters by Olney Orphan Dave Rothe. Dave loves it when I pay him for his work. He's funny like that.

If you're a creator at WWC, please feel free to donate something on the spot. We'd be pleased as punch.

Don't have any money but still want to support Unscrewed! at WWC? Stop by, I'll have fliers. Let's wallpaper the joint.

Oh, I will also by them nice Honor Brigade books you are publishing!!!!!

I'll be at Tom's table a lot of the time, and I might could be persuaded to do a few scribbles for people who toss a couple bucks in the jar. And maybe Tom will bring some of my originals from MonkeySpit's The Fourth Wall.

I found a couple-few more of them while cleaning my office, including this one. (http://www.monkeyspit.net/4thwall/020706.php)

Come on, you know you want it. Signed! Personalized for you!

Are you goning to be there Saturday as that is the only day I will be there.

Thanks Bev, Cam, Alice, EVERYBODY! etc! for the birthday wishes. (Lance, you aren't belated yet, there's still 30 minutes of birthday left here on the east coast, and an hour and thirty minutes up in your neck of the woods I believe, although the central time change confuses me greatly as to what state it begins in.)

Anyway today was a decent day in so much as it didn't suck. I didn't leave my bedroom for much of it (how is this different than any other day?:p ) and ordered some pizza and other not so good for you foods, and played Knights Of The Old Republic on the XBox360. (It's a backwards compatible game from the orginal XBox) and before anyone says anything, I know I'm a good 4 or 5 years behind the gap but dammit it's a fun game.

Every choice you make changes the outcome of the game. You can be an agent of the light of fall to the darkside. Being a good boy I'm a good little Jedi.. Recently restarted even though I'm near the end of the game because I wanted to get that extra party member before I beat it (they didn't tell me you could turn the bad guy to your side I thought she was just being a total beyotch so I killed her!)

Made some things for other people, and um, did a lot of nothin'. :)

Having y'all a part of it meant a lot.

Awww... Chicago is a tad too cold for me! 'Bama has mild winters, with just a light dust of snow last year. Besides, I'm quite enjoying the country! Lots of dogs, cats, chickens, ducks and kids (my nieces and nephew) to chase around, my own little apartment, and family allllll over the place here! And a pool-hall-disguised-as-a-convenience-store across the road! What more could I ask for? ;)

I have to admit, though, asking for directions here will take some getting used to... "Take this road all the way down past the old Miller farm, turn right at the orange mail box, an immediate left and then straight down to the old Hanson barn..."

Bev, (first off... nice to see ya back)... secondly, you'll get used to those "southern directions".

I was down in Kentucky once... and this is the EXACT conversation I had...

Me: "Can you tell me where....(asked for directions)..."
Good Ol Boy: (in a heavy ass drawl) "From here?"
M: (in my mind) No Gomer... start me back about 5 miles... and I'll drive by again and wave like we're old pals... (in reality) "Yes... from here."
GOB: "Wellll, you go down the road a bit..."
M: (in my mind) how the hell far is a 'bit'?
GOB: "Then you're gonna go left at a brick building, looks like a post office kinda... it used to be the beauty shop..."
M: (in my mind) Well what the hell is it NOW?
GOB: "Then yer gonna take a left, not a sharp left, but a little left..."
M: (in my mind) why did I have to ask Opie here...
GOB: "Then yer gonna come up to where a big barn used to be..."
M: (in my mind) Why not just shoot myself and get it over with now...
GOB: "Ya know... if it's where I THINK it is..."
M: (in my mind) so far thinking hasn't sounded like your strongest trait...

It went on for like 5 more minutes like this... and I went off, STILL not knowing where the hell I was going.

And then women wonder WHY we refuse to ask for directions. Because we may be lost... but dammit, we know that the other guy's out there... aren't THAT much smarter then we are!

Next time I go south, I'm bringing a GPS with me instead.

PS... a "bit" in Southern terms as far as mileage, can be replaced with "aways" up north in Maine and New Hampshire... sadly it usually means anything from two minutes to a 45 minute drive. There is no true measure.

PPS... I travel extensively for my job, and when I DO ask for directions (to get to the schools I have to work in), I call the office, tell them I'm NOT from the area (I'm usually in a different state) and get the question back "Do you know where Brown St is?" or "Are you heading towards the town green?" Ummmmmmmmm... I just TOLD you... I'm NOT from the area, I could be heading for the town waterfalls and I wouldn't know!

i lived in lexington, ky for 3 years. even though you have the stereotypical toothless wonders here and there- usually at walmart or the liquor stores, i LOVED it there. i'd move back in a heart beat if i could. there were beautiful rolling hills, white fences, horses and horse farms. very classy when farmer joes weren't screwing that up. spring is gorgeous there, and the winters were relatively mild (although i'm partial to florida's winters)... and there's lots of huge old farm houses! and for the most part, people were very friendly. which is probably where the term "kentucky nice" is from.

my parent's house was broken into a few months back (they live about 3 miles from me). it was during the day while they were at work so no one was there thank goodness. luckily i didn't go over to borrow the treadmill that day or i may have surprised them. and, the most amazing thing- my parents have a 160 pound newfoundland dog. of course, he's more fur than meanness and is an absolute love-bug, (and someday i'll talk scott into letting me adopt him) but STILL we were all surprised anyone would attempt breaking in with him there.

Bev, (first off... nice to see ya back)... secondly, you'll get used to those "southern directions".

<snippage>

You might want to try my method - it STILL isn't guaranteed not to get you lost, and it takes longer, but your odds on getting where you want to go go *WAY* up!

Step 1 - Find a local and ask directions.
Step 2 - Shut off long-term memory after the THIRD data point (sometimes I shut off after the SECOND...), retaining just enough short term memory to say things like "... uh-huh... left at thebig bridge..." (moving your hand in concert with the turns mentioned is a good technique, too.)
Step 3 - Thank your guide and go on your way.
Step 4 - When you reach the data point which is "LAST-DATA-POINT-MEMORIZED-MINUS-1", pray that there's another local around to ask directions of.
Step 5 - Repeat steps 1 - 4 as needed.

Except for the hazard of not finding suitable native guides as needed, this generally works well for me. (It also helps that I'm not one of those males who is averse to asking directions.)

my parent's house was broken into a few months back (they live about 3 miles from me). it was during the day while they were at work so no one was there thank goodness. luckily i didn't go over to borrow the treadmill that day or i may have surprised them. and, the most amazing thing- my parents have a 160 pound newfoundland dog. of course, he's more fur than meanness and is an absolute love-bug, (and someday i'll talk scott into letting me adopt him) but STILL we were all surprised anyone would attempt breaking in with him there.

Ah... Newfies... Yeah; my Dad used to say that "Rags", the Newfie we had when I was a kid, was a great watchdog - he'd watch someone take everything in the place!

At one time, the folks had called the store that they had bought the TV from because it wasn't working right and could they get someone out to take a look at it (which should pretty much tell you all you need to know about how long ago this all was!).

So the guy comes over the next day, and walks in. (Everybody was at work/school, but no one ever locked their doors - hell, sometimes we didn't even CLOSE them, if it was a hot day but there was a good breeze...)

He pulls the TV away from the wall, unscrews the back, fiddles around with it for 15 or 20 minutes, screws the back cover back on, shoves it back against the wall, turns it on to check it and sits on the floor in front of it while waiting for the tubes to warm up (...and there's your SECOND clue as to how long ago this story takes place...!).

Suddenly, he feels this warm, damp *Whuff* on the back of his neck. He looks around... then UP... and sees this 150 lb, mountain of fur looking down at him and tries to remember if his will is up-to-date... when this big sloppy, red tongue comes out and *SSSLLLUUURRRRRRRRPPP!*...

(...and BTW, Sunshine... If you've never tried it... lying on the grass reading with your head propped up by the back of a sleeping Newfie has MUCH to recommend it!)

Better'n maps: GPS. Instead of showing you how to get where you're going from where you think you are, it shows you where you actually are and plots you from there.

The main problem with GPS is stupid users - oddly enough, this appears to be MORE of a problem with the tech solution than with the "ask a local" one.

I've seen a faor number of articles featuring people who follow their GPS's instructions to impassable lanes (http://www.theregister.com/2007/02/20/hampshire_satnav/), rivers (http://www.theregister.com/2007/03/26/subaquatic_merc/), 100-foot cliffs (http://www.theregister.com/2006/04/05/crackpot_satnav/) and, um... other things (http://www.theregister.com/2006/10/24/satnav_mishap/).. And, granted,, to the best of my knowledge, no one ever actually tried this route while it was up (and since it was publicized, it has been taken down)... Nonetheless, presented for your driving pleasure - The shortest driving route from Stanford, California to Stockholm, Sweden:

http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u224/CutterMike/google_grab.gif

(...okay - technically, not a GPS guide at all - but funny as hell!)

The point is that with the "ask a local" method, or even the "paper maps" method, even a stupid driver might say "Y'know... this doesn't look right... I wonder if they meant...", while *WAY* too many people apparently go with the "it's high-tech and cost me good money so they must know what they're talking about," school of "thought" and trust and obey the audible commands of the SatNav devices, despite visual evidence to the contrary.

Other examples of trusting our technology too much can be found in the "Forum On Risks To The Public In Computers And Related Systems" (http://catless.ncl.ac.uk/risks). I have subscribed to their regular e-mail newsletter for years because, while I loves me my techie-toys, I also like to know when on of them is likely to bite me on the ass.

Wow. I absent myself from the internet for a day, and funny stuff happens!

Yes, I count this as the first day of my vacation. Actually, I do have some work-work stuff that has to be finished before the end of the month, so the next couple of days will be engaged in that (hopefully all I need is parts of 2 or 3 days). So I slept in, snoozed, cat-napped, and generally vegged out today. It's been very nice and relaxing. :)

Larry.... VERY FUNNY! ALL OF THEM! Hee. Much funnier than watching The Hunt for Red October (which is on A&E right now).

Maps, GPS, all that stuff.... I like maps. And my impression of GPS guides is that they usually select "main thoroughfare" routes. Although, since I don't have one, I don't know. I do know that last year, I was driving to University of Oklahoma for a conference, and from Albuquerque to Oklahoma, I ran into a string of huge thunderstorms. 2 of them, just skirted the edge. 1, it was so heavy a downpour, everyone got in the right lane and slowed below 50 mph. But that was a short stretch. I hit Oklahoma, and another huge storm, and I couldn't even see the taillights of the vehicle 30 yards in front of me. I got off the freeway, and parked at a truck stop. Down on the interstate, the torrents where falling so heavy, it was as dark as night. But off south, the clouds broke, sunlight shone.... and the road was DRY. And suddenly, I remembered my road atlas. I took to the county roads and drove around the edge of the storm. I love maps. :)

And my impression of GPS guides is that they usually select "main thoroughfare" routes.By default settings, yes. But even with the current lower-end sub-$200 ones like the one I have, you can tell it to forego certain types of roads, and you can tell it to remove a given road from the route and find a path without it.
Higher-end models can take current traffic information and automatically reroute you around the jams of the moment.

And if you were to just get off the road and wander around other routes, the GPS will always keep track of where you are and how it relates to where you're going.

My dad (who did like his technology, being an electrical engineer) might have consider that a spoil-sport aspect, though. When we drove cross-country, if we'd been making good time, he'd get off the main road, and just wander along where his fancy took him (hauling us along, as passengers). He had a knack for finding dead ends, so much so that we named them "Daddy's Dead Ends". One time, we were on country roads in farm country, we drove along this dirt road for miles and miles, and millions of little yellow butterflies flew up in front of the car as we went along. And, yup, it turned into a dead end ... in a farmer's yard. We had to turn around and go back through all those butterflies. Back to "near civilization" we stopped at a gas station, because the front of the car needed to be cleaned off. :)

But I suppose a GPS thingee could be useful. I'm not feeling a burning personal need for it yet, but maybe one day. :)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

UNSCREWED!, the comic industry watchdog and charity, is now an officially registered non-profit organization and will be holding silent auctions at Wizard World Chicago (August 10th-12th) to benefit creators owed money by Tightlip Entertainment.

UNSCREWED! will be holding silent auctions daily at table 5608. It will also be providing merchandise and information about the organization, with acting president Tom Stillwell (writer of Honor Brigade) and director Jim MacQuarrie present.

The items up for auction include a sketchbook by Steve Rude (Nexus), original art by Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash), and a handmade doll by fantasy author Mercedes Lackey. Starting bids for each item will be listed at the start of each day, and anyone will be allowed to drop in and make a bid with the winner being announced by the end of the day.

It has been recently registered as a non-profit organization in Cook County, Illinois, under the name Unscrewed Incorporated. Respected comic creators Kurt Busiek (Astro City) & Colleen Doran (A Distant Soil) and author James Owen (Here, There Be Dragons) are the overseeing board.

Tom Stilwell stated: “We are holding this auction in order to get on-the-spot donations to benefit freelancers who’ve been screwed over. We also hope that by operating in public like this, we can spread the word about what we do and what we’re about. UNSCREWED! is a serious organization that deals with very real issues in this industry.”

UNSCREWED! was formed in late January 2007, in response to large-scale fraud against freelancers by Tightlip Entertainment, which called attention to the abuses and exploitation that goes on the comics industry; the prevailing sentiment seemed to be that getting ripped off early in one’s career was normal. UNSCREWED! was founded to refute this notion and to challenge publishers to operate ethically and honestly. It has since moved past focusing solely on Tightlip to focus on the wider industry.

It provides information about creator’s rights and resources; provides access to legal assistance to protect freelancers against fraud; publicly identifies fraudulent companies; and financially supports freelancers who have been victims of fraud through merchandise sales & auctions. UNSCREWED!’s auctions to date have raised over $4000. For more information, visit www.unscrewedcomic.com.

The Wheels of Justice grind slowly. We could be looking at a few more months before we hear anything, depending on how the authorities choose to handle things.

My guess is when it comes to it, he'll fold like a roadmap and plea-bargain his ass off, do whatever it takes to stay out of jail or serve as little time as possible. Any attorney he talks to is going to suggest he do just that. It would have gone a lot better for him if he had taken the advice offered back around post #200 and just shut the hell up.

In the remaining seventy percent of my waking time, I commanded a team of five volunteers in cleaning, sorting, repairing, photographing, logging and packing 135 lots of personal and household goods, plus construction equipment and supplies including a cement mixer and generator, for Northeast Oklahoma flood relief.

In the heat of summer weather, between cloudbursts, working to exhaustion while having a great time helping our fellow human beings, my crew---including a young French fantasy fan named Clemente who spent a week of his vacation here volunteering with flood relief for Oklahomans he'd never met---swapped stories about the great times we've had in fandom, and howled with laughter about Rick Olney and his excuse-a-thon of a life.

Doing 100 things at once and when I FINALLY get some time to myself to sit down all I really wanna do is play Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic until I fall asleep.

I saved a dark Jedi's soul! I am boss! Now I am sooooooooooore and tired after offering more help than I bargined for. The cool thing about being america's darling and adorable and all that malarky, and having friends in the business district is you get lots of nice perks but the downside is whenever someone is short handed you get that call of "hey, can you help me with something real quick? It won't be more than an hour or so" and it winds up being about 7hrs.

lol.

Let me add my birthday wishes to the others extended to our friend Dave. Hope it's a great one, sir!

Y'know, when I see all these birthday greetings, I keep wondering who would be obsessive enough to keep track of comics professionals birthdays and message board poster birthdays and the like.

Oh, wait, that would be me.

Those posters on my own message board who have mentioned their birthdays (and anniversaries) or just flat-out sent me the information get greetings on those days. I do the same with my industry pals and acquaintances whose birthday information I have.

I'm just saying that if folks on this thread sent me that sort of information, it could be added to my birthday list.

I'm just saying.

Tony

P.S. As to the origin of my birthday compulsion, I told all in a Comics Buyer's Guide column that has either just been published or is due to be published.
