Dammit, I wanna meet Finney.
Anyone who has the radar and integrity to not accept work because of other creators cheated by that publisher is someone I want to meet!
Gail
Carlos is coming back to Arizona in a couple months for some lectures and he's going to bring Fin with him. Fin is already planning to link up with Sarah Beach at Comicon, and we plan on hanging out a bit (as well as throwing a pizza party) so if you're coming this year, I'm sure you'll meet him.

Rick's new song:
Riki Tiki Tavi by.....wait for it.....Donovan.
What new song title or artist will he look for next?
I don't know, but that's a great song and a great album.
So I'm sure he's never heard it.

I noticed that!
I'm more of a "sunshine superman" type of thing.
So in "Riki Tiki Tavi" which is he? The snake or the mongoose. Either way it doesn't end well for him. As I recall Ricki died at the end of that story (between that and charlotte's web I was scarred for life as a child)
He's either a dead mongoose or a snake that killed the mongoose and was subsequently killed by Riki's family.

Ouch! Bad pun.
Hey Gail... The Defendant won't show at any convention with an Unscrewed! presence? That would be, pretty much... every convention there is, now.
And Misty (Mercedes Tamryn Lackey) and I (Larry Tamryn Dixon) have been delighted with our new names.
Oh! And trivia: Joe Phillips was one of my roommates when I lived in Atlanta. I remember him laughing with me while he was working on Speed Racer, saying, "Why am I even on this book? I don't even like cars!" Last I corresponded with him, he was living in San Diego and doing very well.

Yeah I am pretty sure that's the point. lol. He's not going to the Roanoke show, he's not going to have his own con, he's not going to PittCon, he's not going anywhere.
There's a reason he has to get talent from outside the US which goes against his insular paranoia. "You can work for me for free, but DON'T DARE TRY TO COME INTO THIS COUNTRY YOU FORIGEN COMMIE!"

While we're on the subject of translations, can we do this too?
The open letter to Comics Professionals which a bunch of people have signed: http://www.unscrewedcomic.com/staticpages/index.php?page=letter
It differs from Tony's standard warning in several points. Can we translate this into as many languages as possible? I'll upload them to the site and add links for them so that the appropriate page can be forwarded to anyone who needs it.
E-mail the translated text to me at jim@jimmacq.com and I'll format it and put it up.
Thanks!
Done. And sent. Swedes, danes, and norwegians will be able to read it.

You know, there are such things as right and wrong - and the difference is not hard to distinguish.
Someone asked (in another thread) why we are perpetuating this thread against Rick Olney. My answer was easy: it's because he's threatened people, made them feel upset, or worried, or just sick that they might get sued (for NO valid reason).
I could care LESS if I ever participated in ANY thread that involves his name. But I'm doing what I do in exposing him (with help from my friend Carlos) and contributing to Unscrewed! and offering legal support to people he's threatened (like Josh) because Rick is a BULLY.
Well, just now someone shared an email with me, in which Rick basically tells someone (who is going through a bad patch) that he hopes they DIE.
I won't quote it precisely, or name the guy until Josh gets permission from the recipient to post it himself. But that's as low as it gets.
Rick, you're a liar, a bully, a coward, and after this, about as meanspirited a piece of shit as exists.

If you're thinking of c. 1980's comics publishers based in Chicago that had appalling contracts, you may be thinking of First Comics, a company with a bad track record in a number of ways, not the least of which was the way they used to sell themselves as a creator friendly publisher of creator-owned comics when in fact they waltzed off with the trademarks, leaving the creators with copyrights-only, enabling the publisher to fire the creator and hire another team to continue the book, with or without the creator's approval. When First went down, the trademarks were caught up in the proceedings, and creators spent many years trying to wriggle their rights away from the First Comics death throes. Which explains a lot about the fate of properties like American Flagg and Nexus.
{snip}
Wow, that's appalling. And very disappointing, because I loved the First comics line.
Gee, maybe if they'd dealt squarely with people, they'd be celebrating an anniversary now instead of being in the "whatever became of" dustbin.
There's a reason outfits like Now and First go under and ones like Dark Horse and Slave Labor are still going strong.
Thanks for the information, Colleen. It's going into the Comic-Con panel file. Would you mind if I post an edited version on Unscrewed?

Seeing the name "Andrew Rev" brings back memories of a Chicago convention conversation from Hell.
This was before the con moved to the Rosemont Convention Center and before it was sold to Wizard.
Rev plopped himself down at my table in the hotel bar - I was waiting for a few friends - and proceeded to explain in detail why I should be writing for him and not for DC and Marvel and their higher rates. It was bizarro logic, something along the lines of...what he paid me for a script would be a bigger piece of the Comico budget than what DC/Marvel paid me would be of their budgets. I'd be more important to Comico than I would be to those other companies. Comico would love me more and promote me more.
But the bottom line remained that I'd be "paid" less money and working for a company that was already skirting bankruptcy, had no decent artists, and was reportedly already behind in paying freelancers. My friends arrived and sat at another table just to watch my discomfort.
My mind was leaking out my ears with every word Rev said. I don't remember exactly how I survived. Either another publisher (who I wasn't working for) pulled me away to discuss a non-existant project, or my friends walked over, loomed over Rev, and told him to leave me alone.
Normally I would have sent the guy packing myself, but I was stunned by his moronic attempt to con me.
He wasn't exactly the Rick Olney of his day, but I bet they shared a common cockroach ancestor.

Just so the wrong folks don't get tarred with this story: Comico never published Speed Racer, nor were they Chicago-based (at least for most of their existence; I'm not sure where they were based once Andrew Rev took the company over.)
You seem to be confusing them with Now Comics, which did publish Speed Racer and was based in Chicago.
--Nat (writer of two issues of Speed Racer and of the English script for 3/4s of Speed Racer Classics volume 1)
Yup, you must be right! All parts of my story are based on a real conversation, Joe Phillips is a real person who drew Speed Racer, but it must have been NOW. I don't know why I remembered it as being Comico, besides unflattering things being said about those two and First, by other creators.
I'm pretty sure Ron Fortier, as Danny hinted, is still owed money by NOW.
I'm just bummed about Eclipse, still--Editor Fred Burke told me he liked my work and my ideas--we clicked, and I would have had a place with them if the company hadn't slipped off the edge. I wouldn't have taken every proposal rejection or silence by Marvel and DC for the next four years as a personal assault on my ego, and I wouldn't have gone off into commercial art and animation obscurity, picking up a crappy small press gig here and there, dealt with an 'Olney do-nothing but talk big assclown' every two years like clockwork, and wouldn't have had to completely start over in going back to my 'first love' in my 'forties. Not out of choice--I just can't stop myself, and other than music, comics is the only thing I've ever loved doing.

STARCHILD (and the career path I took) exist in part because First screwed me over on an adaptation of SILAS MARNER. I had sixteen pages drawn, inked, lettered, and delivered them to Chicago in person.
There were a lot of reasons I escaped unscathed, the least of which was finding out they were actually cheating other people - and guys like Mike Grell were having to demand payment a year late.
Then I found out they'd contracted me AND Alex Ross (seperately) to do THE ILLIAD. And that was it for me with First.
So, Silas Marner became Ezekiel Higgins, and those sixteen pages (rewritten) became half of STARCHILD #1.

Wow, that's appalling. And very disappointing, because I loved the First comics line.Yes, but the truth of the business is that there aren't two separate groups of companies, ones that did great things and ones that did terrible things. The folks who brought such fine work as Jon Sable, American Flagg, and that lovely Classics Illustrated line to market suffered from their presence. The company that Gail feels is treating her well is also the company that Tony has other feelings about. Folks that Colleen feel treated her poorly are folks that I've had good relations with.
It is the special degree of Olney loserdom that it is hard to point to any mitigating achievement. You can't say "he ripped people off, but at least he put out good books", because he didn't. The claims he has made about his achievements in the comics field wither under scrutiny.
Gee, maybe if they'd dealt squarely with people, they'd be celebrating an anniversary now instead of being in the "whatever became of" dustbin.
There's a reason outfits like Now and First go under and ones like Dark Horse and Slave Labor are still going strong. It would be a mistake to believe that there is a central kindnessocracy in this business. Other publishers that have been viewed as the good guys are nonetheless gone. Marvel and DC certainly have been viewed as having treated freelancers poorly at times, and yet survive. Dark Horse is not without people who feel they've been treated poorly, and I would be surprised if there's not someone who feels similar about Slave Labor -- which is not a condemnation of them. Rather, when one is dealing with that many creative souls over that many years, there's apt to be some who have expectations not borne of their actual deal or of their understanding of the business.

I've seen you.
I wouldn't fuck with you lightly. And I fear no one.
But wanting to kick Olney's ass isn't a flaw....it shows your good character.
Well, if that is supposed to be intimidating to any degree, it wasn't... Sounds more like you two ought to get a room. LMAO Oh, and bring a lunch! You two have been so sucked in by Tamryn's lies about my physical condition that you've turned to making it a matter of being OF GOOD CHARACTER when you get bitch slapped by an old guy in his 50's. That's the trouble with youth today, they eat to much, sit in front of their computer and write comic books while living in fantasy worlds.
Sad... Why don't you bullies and CBR YABS BLABS hate group members grow up! Contrary to nasty rumor, I wouldn't have any trouble protecting myself.
This is how Tamryn controls people. She places herself atop a message board thread on a message board that she's responsible for -- and then -- acts as irresponsibly as she can to be "cool" to all her little fellow haters. Take my word for it, Tamryn... your fame is fleeting. I know. I have my thumb on its pulse. LMAO!
R.
How many things are wrong with this post by Cockroach?
first, Olney...show me one post, one email, anything where I have physically threatened you. While you fail at that, can anyone tell me where I stole the name of anyone? Do you know of any artists with the name Matt Martin, or, even better, Matt Doc Martin? The oddest thing is, I have always been Matthew, when I was adopted, I took the name Martin, and my nickname has been Doc for about 15 years. I get the feeling he is trying to make my head hurt understanding him. I mean, I know "Matt" and "Martin" are two VERY unique names. Not at all like Ric Olie.
Second: Richard saying he would want to beat your butt isn't much of a threat, as he did not say that he would, nor where he would. Want to see threats? Click the link in my signature.
Third: YOU have issued MANY threats and yet, not followed through with any. When will anyone be sued by you? When will you reveal your master plan to get back at all of us and take over the comics world? Why did you not bring a "surprise" to me at MegaCon, when you SAID you were coming with a "Posse"? Did that posse include your son-in-law., Rich BackFat? Why did you not go to PittCon like you swore you would, to take people's heads off in the parking lot? I have a list of your promises (Read: lies), what do YOU have, Olney?
Fourth: All I need to see is a picture of your sweaty face to see you are woefully out of shape. I also have the word of people that have known you. Anytime you want to prove me wrong, you know where you can find me.
She places herself atop a message board thread on a message board that she's responsible for -- and then -- acts as irresponsibly as she can to be "cool" to all her little fellow haters.
Actually, I have met her. She is genuine and stands up for herself and other people. She has a spine. That is a series of bones that everyone but you and Dennis have.
Come to DragonCon this year. Come to MegaCon, CAPE, or SDCC next year.
Give me my "surprise".
Or, shut up, pay what you owe, and crawl back to your bottle.

I don't know which publisher you think I'm referring to as "feeling" badly about, but First Comics never did me wrong. I never had a problem with them, I never had an argument, they never broke an agreement.
That doesn't mean I don't think they had sucky business practices.
And I don't "feel" any publisher did me wrong. I know it. As a matter of fact. I did not have unrealistic expectations, I knew what to expect because it was written in my contract and that contract was broken.
If a publisher that does not have a contract granting them copyright and trademark interests then claims copyright and trademark in your work, and then forces you to go through years of litigation to prove it, only to then have said publisher make a noise like a hoop and roll away in the world's most ridiculously pathetic settlement in the history of publishing, feeling has nothing to do with it. The lawsuits were simply a way of trying to harass a young girl into giving up.
A publisher who breaks an agreement, claims rights they do not have, fails to pay moneys owed, or harasses and intimidates freelancers into capitulation, is - de facto - a thug.
Facts are at issue here.
And it is not at all unusual for a publisher to treat some creators well and some creators poorly solely out of self interest, knowing that a powerful creator can do them harm, and a teenaged beginner can't.
In my case, they were wrong.

Oh, and one more for the road, Nat, my good man.
Never underestimate the profound difference in the treatment a middle aged man may receive from a male publisher, and the treatment a cute blonde teenager will receive from the same publisher.
The same publisher will settle out of court with the cute blonde very, very quickly when the blonde makes it very, very clear all the letters he wrote her will be made a matter of public record when the shit hits the fan in court.
Just sayin'. As an example, see.
Glad you had a nice time at this mutual ex-publisher...whoever it may have been.

I figured you're a pretty dim bulb, and it might be embarrassing if you have to ask your leggle team to explain it to you).

My esteemed apologies to the noble and majestic Mongai. I have long been been very pro Mongoose and I believe my record proves this!
Riki is one of the greats in the fictional rodent patheon. Who has not only the distinct honor of being a childrens book classic but also animated by the master of merry melodies, and the titan of Tom & Jerry, Tex Avery himself.

Matthew, I have comic books that are older and smell better than you. I saw where you remarked, " I can do Pig Latin....." From what I heard went on at CAPE, you can do pigs too! But we won't go into that until your trial. Sorry that I'm not as politically correct as the rest of you are.
Nat's a crossdresser online! "Oh, Susanna! Won't you cry for me!? 'Cause I came from Alabama with a banjo on my kneeee!"
Who is Paul Smith? Not the Paul Smith, is it? 'Cause I thought that guy died from a drug overdose or fell down a manhole or somethingback in the early 80s... Sorry, Paul... I can re-invigorate your career. Talk to Tony, my brutha from anotha mutha.

After all, you went to a convention with him and have had numerous emails back and forth over the years.
Yet he still someone doesn't remember even what your first name is.
Is his memory that bad?
Well,
1) He's one of the dumbest people I've ever met. I wish I were kidding, but two hours listening to this blowhard talk about his non-acheivements is enough to convince ANYONE he's barely keeping it together.
2) He has no business acumen of any kind, as indicated by his constant inability to pay bills or keep promises, and his many failed endeavors. My guess? Like an idiot, he simply lost all the records. Where he came up with 'Tamryn,' I have no idea.

That's really funny, because I actually joined his MVCN group, and he let me right in. I never posted, just observed, but he didn't ask me any questions or accuse me of being a spy or anything. I actually left because I was bored, and because anyone who's serious about creating a semi-pro zine wouldn't create a yahoo group so he could just sit around and chat.

According to Tom, he woman whom Rick banned from his yahoo group had been asked to be on the new ORCA board just a day or two earlier.
Forty-eight hours to go from "I want you on my board of directors" to "never darken our doorways again".

I still say it's closer to Black Condor which I believe predated Hawkman slightly. We may need a ruling from the mighty Waid on this. The black wings are a dead giveaway, but the costume.. could go either way. Condor had a Hawkman-esque uniform shortly after DC bought out I believe it was actually Charlton that published The Freedom Fighters originally but I could be mistaken about that.
Condor was the go to "Hawk" character everytime DC killed off Hawkman. One of the FEW native american characters in the DC unverse prior to Apache Cheif.
It is a rather geekish nit to pick but whether it was Hawkman or Black Condor, it's still a rip off character. YOU NEED SEVEN POINTS OF DIFFERENCE RICK!

Black Condor was originally published by Quality Comics in the '40s. He didn't really look much like Hawkman, other than both being bare-chested:
http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/b/blakcond.htm
Plus, he had the best origin ever: He could fly, but not because he had some mutant powers, or special flying gadget. No, he could fly because he'd been raised by birds. Now that's an origin!

History: (Crack Comics #1 "Origin of the Black Condor", ga) Richard Grey Jr. was only an infant when his parents' archeological expedition to Mongolia were all killed in an ambush. The sole survivor, Richard was raised by giant black condors local to the region. Studying his condor foster parents, the child learned to fly.
When he reached adulthood he befriended a hermit monk, Father Pierre, who convinced him that he should use his unique attributes to do good, before he too was killed. Richard travelled to America, where, as luck would have it, he learned he had an exact double, the recently murdered Senator Thomas Wright. He took the identity of the recently murdered Senator (and the dead man's fiancee Wendy, for good measure), and created the costumed persona of the Black Condor, which he used to fight evil.
That origin is oddly appropriate considering he debuted in a comic called "Crack".

I never had a problem with them, I never had an argument, they never broke an agreement.I wasn't referring to First there (nor obviously when I was talking about the company that Gail and Tony have had different experiences with). Nor was I denying the accuracy of your beliefs of ill-treatment (or for that matter confirming them; I've heard your side of the story but only your side, and I have no need to try to form an opinion based on it.) I was merely pointing out that publishers do not split down into purely-good folks and purely-evil folks, as convenient as that would be for us discussing them.
However, despite your suggestions later, I was not a middle-aged man when I was dealing with them as a publisher.

I wasn't suggesting you were a middle aged man, and don't even know what publisher you think I am talking about.
I don't even know who you are or what you have ever done in your life. Until today, I did not know you had worked in publishing.
I certainly don't know how old you are.
I don't even think we've ever met.
But I am busting with curiosity about what you THINK I am talking about, though I think I'd probably better not go there...heh.
My point is simply this: just because you haven't been robbed by someone doesn't mean they are not a thief.
Just because a man didn't grope you doesn't mean that man's not a masher.
Someone who has robbed others is still a thief. Someone who abuses the weak is still an abuser. Someone who molests young girls is still a molester.
Even if they never did a thing to you.
Not wanting to call something black just because they never blackened their hands on you doesn't make the situation grey.
c
There aren't two sides to every story. There's only the truth. But how interesting that there's no disputing the ill treatment of others here, while my claims of ill treatment are matters about which you have no need to form an opinion.
Nice.

For anyone who might be interested:
Some days ago, Mr. Mac made reference to people who had no clue as to how clueless they really were, and so overestimated (badly!) their competence in a given area (like, oh - say - writing comic books, just to pick an example off the top of my head...). I had read an article based on some of the Cornell University studies and I finally tracked it down.
For anyone interested, the article is available as a PDF here (http://www.apa.org/journals/features/psp7761121.pdf).
I have taken the liberty of quoting the abstract below:
--------------------
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology
1999, Vol. 77, No. 6. ] 121-1134
Copyright 1999 by the American Psychological Association, Inc.
0022-3514/99/S3.00
Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments
Justin Kruger and David Dunning
Cornell University
People tend to hold overly favorable views of their abilities in many social and intellectual domains. The authors suggest that this overestimation occurs, in part, because people who are unskilled in these domains suffer a dual burden: Not only do these people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices, but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it. Across 4 studies, the authors found that participants scoring in the bottom quartile on tests of humor, grammar, and logic grossly overestimated their test performance and ability. Although their test scores put them in the 12th percentile, they estimated themselves to be in the 62nd. Several analyses linked this miscalibration to deficits in metacognitive skill, or the capacity to distinguish accuracy from error. Paradoxically, improving the skills of participants, and thus increasing their metacognitive competence, helped them
recognize the limitations of their abilities.

That I tried to sign on under a female name to the MVCN list or somesuch? Because if so... nope. That would be just Olney error.
Other than that, I can't fathom his insult as anything other than a random insult generator. There is a photo out there with me in fishnet stockings, but to the best of my knowledge it's not on the Internet -- it's only in a book on folks who perform along with the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Oh, and I can confirm that Paul Smith has not died of a drug overdose, or if he did so, it was sometime after 10 PM PDT last night. Although he did briefly get John Belushi confused with his brother James, but I wouldn't go so far as to assume that any particular intoxicants were needed to. Paul still has an ongoing career in comics, and is respected member of the community. It's hard to see how associating with someone like Olney would augment that at all.

Christ, why would I need to make a sock puppet even if I knew how? Every dumb thing they post gets sent to me by at least two people anyway.
It must be AWFUL for Dennis, in particular, that people can see how remarkably two-faced he is. He tells ME that Rick has no business ethics, and then he calls the people Rick's cheated 'cretins,' on the same DAY.
Why anyone would want a friend like that, I have no idea. Gross.
Gail
It's a smaller world these days, it seems.
After Tom's initial contact via email, she wrote back, asking questions about Rick and accusations made on this thread, in particular. And she asked about other people here. And my name (as well as Larry's) came up as people she could check out, and she did. And she had some questions. Which I answered. And then we found out we had more in common than Rick.
She runs an organic farm collective in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. I used to live there - and we used to buy groceries from her. And I recommended a local attorney, and that she take the correspondence from Rick (in which he implies that he will be pursuing her legally, as well making as other threatening remarks) and give it all to him.
Rick WAS implying that Nat was really this woman - and after all the requests for keeping her information private, Rick went and posted her name, online, in his little song about Nat. And she is not happy.
I also told her you have NO ATTORNEY, Rick. And that you and your threats are completely impotent.

According to Tom, he woman whom Rick banned from his yahoo group had been asked to be on the new ORCA board just a day or two earlier.
Forty-eight hours to go from "I want you on my board of directors" to "never darken our doorways again".
All because he thought she was Tamryn. Tom said she asked not to be involved in any of this- but that asking Rick about Tom set him off like a powder keg.
Brings to mind one of my favorite quips from THE WEST WING:
"What do you call a leader without any followers?
"Just a guy taking a walk."
His board of WHAT?
"Hi, I'm a serial deadbeat with the worst reputation in comics, I pay no one, and if you google my name, you'll see nothing but disgusted people chiming in how they will never participate in anything with my name attached. I leave behind an unmatched parade of poorly-conceived and failed attempts at gaining noteriety for myself, and nearly everyone who has worked for me has come out strongly against me and my (as my best friend and former Orca President put it just two days ago) 'lousy business practices.'
Will you be on my board of directors?"

Rick probably keeps him around because of his loyalty and he needs someone to constantly feed his ego.
Just because Dennis' is two-faced isn't enough of a disadvantage to "let him go".
Dennis position is impossible to replace right now. Maybe that's why he's always looking to make new "friends" online? lol

I don't even think we've ever met.Actually, we have, briefly, on at least a couple occasions. Not that I'd expect you to have any reason to recall me amongst the many folks you've met at conventions over the years.
We both had work published by WaRP. That my experiences there were good does not mean that yours weren't rotten... nor, for that matter, does yours being rotten mean that mine weren't good. And that isn't meant to be putting down your view of them at all -- I can say that I had some pleasant conversations with one of my old neighbors, but that doesn't mean that I don't think she should be in prison for setting fire to a house that her boyfriend was sleeping in.
But how interesting that there's no disputing the ill treatment of others here, while my claims of ill treatment are matters about which you have no need to form an opinion. We have gotten input from both sides here. And there is a reasonable reason for me to be involved because this is an ongoing matter, with folks currently due money and with Olney continuing to pull his schemes. My taking a stance here can have some influence on the outcome of matters. And I'm someone who has been both publicly insulted and threatened with lawsuit by Olney in the course of this, so I would be hard-pressed not to have ended up with an opinion.
To the best of my knowledge (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), the matters between you and WaRP are long since settled (and no, I'm not trying to say "happily settled and forgotten), and WaRP does not currently appear to be publishing anyone. As such, I don't see where my taking a stance would do any good. If someone were to come up and say to me "I've just been approached by WaRP, and they want to publish something I've done. Are they good to work with?", I would tell them that my experiences were good, and I can point them to other people who had a good experience, but I would also suggest that they contact you, since you had a different experience.

It was in Chicago after Andrew bought it and no it was Clasicc Comico that did Speed Racer. Andrew's company also did NorthStar which published the early Faust.

She runs an organic farm collective in the San Juan Islands of Washington State.Ah, that leaves me out then. While I've been in Washington State, I don't recall ever being off airport property there (though I hope to change that soon). I've got no instinct for agriculture; the last time I acquired a plant that was intended to be kept alive, it was a small cactus, about 25 years ago, and it was dead within a year. And running a collective wouldn't seem to be playing to my personal strengths. So no, I think we can be pretty sure I'm not her.

Tony
Yikes, I was working for Andy during that time.. hey I needed the money..oh right he hardly ever paid me. Anyway I still have his manual on how to do comics the "right" way. He had us storm a Marvel summit near O'Hare airport one time and he almost got us arrested. Good times. I hated when he would say" gimme two minutes, two minutes" which would mean two or more hours.

Well, this is what makes it all so funny. Nat is certain he knows who I am talking about, and I KNOW Danny thinks I am talking about someone completely different.
IT DOESN'T MATTER who I am talking about, I was trying to make a point about how it is completely unfair to sit around and hem and haw and state "Well, they were nice to me!" in these situations.
That's Dennis' shtick.
Rick Olney is a friend! He's always been nice to Dennis! He must be a nice guy because he was nice to Dennis!
I worked for every shmuck publisher there was in the 1980's and a lot of them pulled some dirty tricks. And you can warn people repeatedly about this stuff, and no matter how often, some yahoo will sit there and "reserve their judgment", and then turn right around and go right off and do business with them.
Not only are they basically saying your experience didn't matter, but your judgment is suspect.
While other people may never have a bad experience with your nemesis, don't discount the fact that - after their underside has been exposed - some clients do clean up their act. That still doesn't make them nice people, it just means they are on notice.
It doesn't matter how something was settled by lawyers, it matters because it happened and it was real. Dismissing that experience is just another way of muzzling creators who have inconvenient truths about people who have lined your pockets at the expense of those who came before.
And talking about contracts, clauses, and the underside of publishing is not something that relates only to Rick Olney and his world. There is more to be learned here.

Despite all the back-and-forth (Colleen, Nat, I think you guys are kinda talking past each other, but I also think there's no malice intended on either side), my original point was that people who treat their employees fairly tend to be meticulous about other areas of their business as well, and people who look for shortcuts and angles and schemes to avoid paying people tend to be equally slipshod in their general practices. Which is a major reason why some publishers have 25th anniversary issues and some barely make it five years.

Wow. I go to my writers' group, have lunch with them, we go to see Spider-Man 3... and when I get home, I learn there's been another eruption in the Olneyverse!
He kicks someone out of his group because he suspects her of being one of us? Heh.
He accuses Matt of stealing his name... I mean, why would anyone steal a name like "Matt Martin"? That just sort of reeks of being a real name. (But I am reminded of back in December when he questioned whether or not "JohnPopa" was a real person/name. (Sorry, John. I did get a laugh off that one!)
And having nothing else to do with his time (since showing up in court is just a non-starter), he decides that Matt sharing a room during a convention weekend with another man automatically means "romance". Hmmmm. Wasn't he supposed to be sharing a room with someone at PittCon? Wasn't he making jokes about it at least not being sharing a bed? (Ewww. Sorry.... need to take my brain back to decontamination.)

I'm now going to go spend some time with my new addiction - a railroad computer game. :p
What makes me laugh the most, is that we each had our own twin bed.
I suppose Rick thinks I'm a bigger dick than he is - er. . I mean HAVE a bigger dick than him (but EVERYONE here does, even the girls. Rick just has a steaming Mangina hole).and could get to Matt from across the 4 foot gap between the beds.
what a sad little "man" he is.

See, Bree, you can't derail this thread. No matter how far off the rails it goes, no matter what irrelevant tangents or freewheeling flights of insanity we indulge in, Rick will always pop up with some new foolishness to drag us back on-topic.
Is that a DARE...?
KRIS!
Yes, princess...?
Hand me my GLOVE ...!
The crowd gasps as Kristin opens a mahogany box containing a shining gauntlet. Inside is Bree's weapon of choice ... her +5 Adamantium Glove of Retcon-Punching. It's insides lined with velvet, the outside is a mixture of Adamantium with a small amount of Vibranium, Inertron, and Suspendium, bejeweled with several Soul Gems amidst golden spikes made of Marvelium. A small soft sound is heard as Bree puts on the glove and wrigles her fingers.
You want some of THIS, MacQ...? :p

Oh, and by the way - Matthew? You reading?
One of Rick's emails to Susanna mentioned the fact that ORCA never was registered as an actual non-profit charity.. But that THIS time he was going to file the paperwork.
Tom and I have emailed her asking if we can actually run his emails to her here.
Always reading. I would be interested in a copy of those emails.
I am going to try to follow up with an IRS agent in a few weeks. That just confirms what we already knew.
What a feeble excuse for an existence. That said.... I've met so many neat people through this thread, people who I hope will stay on my Christmas card list for a long, long time. So, you guys have advance warning - I'll be collecting snail-mail addresses down the road! You all are likely to drive my list over 400 easily, since it topped 350 this year. Heh. As far as stealing my name, you'd have to ask my parents about that.
And I thought he was talking about sex with actual pigs. Which made me think, "I never saw Barbara there".
The sad thing is, I think sometimes that no one could be as absolutely stone cold stupid as Rick Olney is....and he manages to show me he can be even dumber.
I wonder if he even graduated high school.

http://www.unscrewedcomic.com/

If you think that's what's going on here, then you're wrong. I'm not about to go off and do work for WaRP at this point, and I haven't worked for them for more than a decade.I think everyone's experience matters... and I think just about everyone's judgment is suspect. I don't know you well enough to assume your judgment to be flawless. But I do think you give valuable input and information.
Excuse me?
Where on Earth do you get the idea I am upset that you might go work for an ex-publisher that doesn't even exist anymore?
What?
Not only have I never spoken to you about any client, and have no memory of ever having met you, but this post wasn't even directed TO you, but to Danny. And it addressed the distressing reality that no matter how much time and effort you put into warning people about unscrupulous clients, there will always be people who will blow you off and go work for them anyway. That's nothing personal against you, nor was it directed at you.
This has been a running theme on some of the posts here, has it not?
"Gee, considering all the people Rick hasn't paid off, why would Jason Dube do business with him?" Why on Earth do people associate with unscrupulous clients when they KNOW that others have never been paid? Do they think everyone else is lying? Stupid? Retarded? What?
And I hate to break it to you, but Danny is on track about certain aspects of this about which I am pretty certain you know absolutely nothing. We exchanged some private letters a few weeks ago, and not only did a certain person never work at WaRP, but they are not even in the same state, as Danny is in Virginia where I live.
Yes, I had problems at WaRP, and I simply do not care whether you ever worked there. Having never had contact with you prior to your working there, why on Earth you would assume I would take offense at your freelance gig is unfathomable. I couldn't care less. I wasn't referring to you at all. Since you seem to want to continue to insist that you were happy there, I'm not sure why you continue to do so repeatedly to me.

There is more to be learned here.
c
When you're right, you're right, Colleen, and you're usually right!
I think there's value in citing one's positive experiences with a publisher. I don't think they should be discounted simply because someone else had a bad experience with them.
What's wrong, dead wrong, is turning a cowardly, Dennis Kininger-like eye to the bad just because you haven't personally been the victim.
Both statements below are true:
1) DC has been amazing to me.
2) DC has not been amazing to everyone.
I think it's fair to say the first, and cowardly to not say the second. The same is unfortunately true for virtually every publisher in the industry, and likely most companies in the world, as well.
Just be honest, don't be Dennis. That's all.

Ah! Server hiccups again!
That said, the Dave/Rick exchanges..... How is it that the paramecium manages to fail to understand what is fairly basic English. If I look at the sequence objectively, I can guess that either Rick was blatantly telling Jeff to lie to Dave, or Jeff didn't know Dave was supposedly doing the logos, but certainly that something got misunderstood between Jeff & Dave and Rick made it worse with his meally-mouthed pussy-footing and "I'm in charge, but I'm innocent of all this" blather.
My sympathies to Dave, I hope things pick up for him (especially that he stay alive!), I'm glad he and Jeff get on better now. And I wish the paramecium would disappear into a black hole and pull it in after himself. (The thought of him being stretched down to particles by the gravity well of the black hole brings a certain satisfaction to the imagination.)

A double is wide enough for one person to do flip-flops and stretch out and still be on the surface of the mattress. A twin... you fall off onto the floor rolling from your back to your side. "Twin" -- it's about half the width of a double. Think ... school dorm, camp bunk bed, or park bench wide (and I mean from front of seat to back.) ;)
(We will now all wait with bated breath while the paramecium seeks to come up with some "clever" bed joke to make about me. Tiresome, isn't it? When you can see it telegraphed in the plotline 5 minutes into the movie?)

A double is wide enough for one person to do flip-flops and stretch out and still be on the surface of the mattress. A twin... you fall off onto the floor rolling from your back to your side. "Twin" -- it's about half the width of a double. Think ... school dorm, camp bunk bed, or park bench wide (and I mean from front of seat to back.) ;)
And two twin boxsprings together form the base for a kingsize bed. So, actually a twin is half as wide as a kingsize. (Ask the quilter. She'd know what size is what. ;) ) Bert, I bet you thought they were "twin" beds because there were two exactly alike in there, now didn't you?

Where on Earth do you get the idea I am upset that you might go work for an ex-publisher that doesn't even exist anymore?Given that you've already acted snarky about my recent posts, and given that I was discussing dealings with a publisher where I'd had a good experience and you'd had a bad one, then it seemed quite possible that your comments about people who state their good experiences where others have had bad were commenting on my comments.
Given that possibility, I addressed it as a possibility (the "If" construct there.)
That's nothing personal against you, nor was it directed at you. I'm glad to hear that.
Having never had contact with you prior to your working there, why on Earth you would assume I would take offense at your freelance gig is unfathomable. You may want to question your assumptions about what it was that I assumed.

Yeah, that's a pretty low Olney statement.... about what is expected.
But also note that he refered to Dave as an "employee". This at the very least suggests a lack of understanding on Rick's part about his business relationships... but if he truly believes that Dave was an employee, he should expect some bigger problems. I have a real doubt that Rick was properly handling Dave or anyone as an "employee", in terms of taxes and the like.

That whole non-profit status thing was one of the first huge lies Rick committed on the internet, several years back. Another Onley-shaped skid-mark on the underwear that is Orca. People asked to see it, Rick swore it was already N-f-p, a total lie, and lost his mind when questioned on it.
I think that, combined with the all his other deceptions, is why I find the question of his supposed charity donations so compelling. Of course, Matt has yet to find a single one of those organizations that can find any proof Rick donated any of that money (raised by donations of others, not Rick at all).
Pretty creepy.

Actually, the only one he claims to have raised actual money for is St Jude's.
And no, he never donated a dime.
There are now 3 charity organizations that he has used the name and/or logo for for promoting his cons.
That is a big no-no. And, with luck, the NY AG will be getting in touch with him soon.

Again, I remain baffled by your hostility.
No, I was not directing this AT YOU. It's not about YOU. I was speaking in generalities about the recent posts I had just read regarding those who continue to do business with unscrupulous publishers after hearing all the warnings. Since, I repeatedly posted that I had no contact with you prior to this, do not know you, and never had any contact with you about any publisher at any time, I do not know how you came to this erroneous conclusion. There has been no contact between us about a publisher, therefore there could not have been a situation in which you worked for a publisher against my advice.
And since the publisher you mention does not exist, it is baffling why you would think I would be distressed that you might someday work there.
You stated yourself that it seemed "quite possible" that I was writing about you personally, and you are simply wrong. "If" you did draw that conclusion.
It has been my impression that the snark was coming from you. If that is not the case, then I stand corrected.

The advantage of having ACTUAL attorneys is that they can advise you what can and cannot cause problems for you.
The attorney in Washington has told Susanna that there is NOTHING she wrote to Rick that is actionable in any way, and authorized the release of the email about ORCA (not ever being nfp) to Matt.
Susanna herself authorized Tom Stillwell and I to post it here.

Good morning, Susanna!
As I write this it is a little after 8am in upstate New York. I was surprised to read that there is a Mohawk Valley near you there on the WA-OR border. I'll have to do some research on that area, because the Mohawk Valley here is named as such for the Mohican native Americans that, far as I know, were the tribe here a couple centuries ago along with the Algonquin, Iroquois, and Abenaki tribes. I actually have a small percentage of Abenaki blood in me according to my family genealogy. It probably is that mean streak in me. I recall reading that the Abenaki were warriors. lol (little early morning humor)
Anyway, I fully understand about the hate group sentiment. Just do me a favor and try not to read that crappy nonsense. Take a step back from your computer and realize that it takes a certain type of trait in people to want to belong to something, anything, so bad that they are led blindly by spite. 'Course, this is all fixable with some legal address that is coming.
But I'd say that if you can look away then there is hope for you. :) Yes, Jason is in California. He's working on my manga book entitled DEVIL BUG. Its a testimony to the life of an actual Marine killed in Iraq last year. This particular young Marine loved comics and Spider-Man specifically. "Devil" as in "Devil Dog" a Marine nickname from WWII ... not the evil connotation.
My health could always be better. I've lived through a complete loss of my thyroid function, survived a cancer scare, learned I am susceptible to angina attacks, and while people online in the comics community think less of me daily ... I'm sure a truthful history will tell of how and why I tried as hard as I did to work with the major publishers for a dozen years to try and bring children back into reading, and reading comics via what ORCA and ORCAKids was promoting. I also command the run-on sentence. lol (that's a joke)
I'll never survive losing my mom and mother-in-law so close to each other and totally unexpectedly. It amazes me that these jerks are not able to see that THAT alone would destabilize a person and/or business to a degree. But it'll all work out. And their mean spirit will consume them. They don't intimidate me and I'm not afraid.
Far as helping me -- I'm appreciative of your offer. I just don't know how you could help other than to be a friend and write up that personal reference I mentioned earlier. We have a new website in the works that'll address the goals that the MVCN has and we're already picking up readers and fans, so a few words from you would probably be on the homepage with others we're collecting, with just your name and town/state to offset the flurry of negative things that losers and troll types want to circulate. ORCA is coming back. Would you want to be on the small board of directors that we're setting up? We are planning to file for our full non-profit status this time and what ORCA accomplished the last time around will be placed where the public can find it --on a time line -- and know to what degree the larger part of this industry took their lead from us back then. Much of which, by the way, was actually put in motion by us and bragged about on a large scale.
I'd also like your mailing address and telephone number, if you don't mind? I believe you're a real person ... but it must be my small degree of paranoia. Know what I mean? I have never used any screen name online except "orcafresh" and my real name. 'Course, I've learned the downside of that. But if you wanted to reassure me one last time, we could exchange contact info. If you're interested in any of this, let me know.
I also wanted to send you some stuff (books) to read that I think you and your youngster will enjoy. Is it a boy or girl. Yes, it makes a difference in reading material, obviously.
Well! Hope the UPS man hits your doorstep today! :) I actually am waiting on him too. lol
Talk to you later.
Enjoy your day!

I certainly hope so. I'm not sure what it was all about.
The other day I read a story about a Marine who was on vacation in North Carolina with his wife and children.
Two boys got into distress in the water, and he swam out to save them. He pulled the boys onto a board and then told them he would have to let them go.
The boy survived and the Marine died in front of his wife and kids.

That situation was strange and disappointing. I'm not aware of any lie being involved in there, though. Had Rick told me to lie, I would have used a very unprofessional set of words in response.

Because that's the sort of thing real Marines do.
I solemnly give honor to the man who made such a supreme sacrifice---and knowingly.
I remember the look on Misty's face when I explained to her, all these years later, what it meant to me to be a firefighter and why I missed it. It was like she was meeting me for the first time. I said to her exactly:
"I don't know if you noticed but every time, before I left on a call, I looked back at the house, and at you. It's because I knew that, three hours from then, there might be a sheriff's deputy or my chief coming to that door to tell you that I went down on that run and I won't be coming back home. But I knew that every time the pager went off, I could be going in to a position where a kid that I help out of a fire may become a researcher or a doctor who'll save a hundred lives. Or a jazz musician or an actor who'll make a million people laugh. Every time I went out on a run and I flipped the strobes on, I took that last glance, then I put the hammer down. I know that I love you, and I love what we do together, and I'd sure miss you, and I know you'd miss me. But it's something I needed to do."
And I was never a very GOOD firefighter. But I knew why I was there. I have comic books and fantasy and scifi novels to thank for that. I couldn't read that many stories about people doing good deeds for their fellow man, and not have some of it rub off.

That is one of thje biggest loads of horseshit I've read yet from The Thief!!!
His unending use of sockpuupets at Comicon.com alone, is worthy of some kind of internet record. And when he would use those socks to back up "Rick's" post....it was so easy to see, it was hysterical.
So tell me another one, Rick, Thomas Paine, Steven Harris Esq., Dutch, Magnus, etc...
Oh...and Thief/Liar....how about your own words, posted here (http://www.comicon.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/ubb/get_topic/f/35/t/000560.html)...

While some people are attracted to heroic fiction because of its lofty ideals and model of altruism, some people are attracted to it because it feeds the need for a power fantasy.
Rescuing doesn't get done because its the right thing to do, its an opportunity to show what power you wield over others, and to have people admire you for being powerful, not for being good.
That's my guess.
I read "Delusion for a Dragonslayer" by Harlan Ellison when I was a little kid, and simply did not "get it". I read it again years later after spending some time in fandom, and I had no trouble understanding it whatsoever.

Yes, I am surprised he would put that in writing.
However, the letter's conversational quality, and seeming reasonableness is what is alarming to me.
If you had no direct experience with him, you'd never guess what he's like when he's not on good behavior. It's easy to see why some people use the "but he's nice to me" refrain. They just can't imagine that they are not seeing what others are seeing. And if other people got different treatment, they probably deserved it.
The point being is that the most monstrous people can look and act like everyone else when they want to.

Amen, brother. Damn near everything I know about being a decent person I learned from either comic books or Harry Chapin.
The Defendant (I still love that) clearly missed the point.
Hey Rick! You know that part where Green Lantern says "no evil shall escape my sight"? He's talking about you.
Fun game: take any superhero's oath or motto and drop The Defendant's name in. It works:
BATMAN:
Bruce Wayne: "Rick Olney is a superstitious, cowardly lump, so my disguise must be able to strike terror into his heart. I must be a creature of the night, black, terrible... a... a..."
Caption: "As if in answer, a huge bat flies in the open window!"
Bruce Wayne: "A bat! That's it! It's an omen... I shall become a BAT!"
Golden Age Green Lantern:
"I will shine my light over dark things,
For dark things like Rick Olney cannot stand the light,
The light of the Green Lantern. "

One last time. You sent me the following email earlier:
Rick,
I received another letter from Tom Stillwell. And I responded to it. At first I was upset that he'd contacted me again - but he also sent information about a court case he said you lost just yesterday. You didn't say anything about being sued, Rick - but the fact it seems you WERE, and didn't even defend yourself, makes people like Tom Stillwell seem more credible. And he's part of that group on those message boards I wanted to avoid to begin with.
I'm very disappointed, and very sad.
I've enjoyed my interactions with you, and Dennis, and Jason, but I didn't expect to get drawn into something like this - and honestly, right now, I have no idea who to trust.
Sincerely,
Susanna
"You didn't say anything about being sued, Rick - but the fact it seems you WERE, and didn't even defend yourself, makes people like Tom Stillwell seem more credible"
That, in my opinion, is your betrayal. You are welcome to share email and answer whomever you please, obviously. But also obviously, I don't need to tell or explain to you anything about what is going on in my life, legally or otherwise, although I recognize that I did share some things with you in passing. And I did that because I thought you were real and genuine.
You answering an email from Tom Stillwell only proves to me that you're no different from anyone else that loves a train wreck or a fresh filled commode.
You trot your sadness out and tout over credibility because you read mis-truths and half baked lies. That is on you, Susanna. If my "credibility" was ever on the table in dealing with you ... I was not aware of it. And now, because you won't honor my request to stop emailing me I'm going to fix the matter myself. Good bye.

Point out the betrayal. Where is it? What did I say to warrant your attacks on me?
I should point out that you were the one who, believing I was "Tamryn", threatened to track my ISP and pursue me through legal channels. If you think this email warrants that, so be it. You don't have to read or respond to my emails; you COULD simply delete them. But you're the one who has chosen to continue threatening me, Rick.
And I am NOT Tamryn.
Rick Olney < tightlip.entertainment@gmail.com> wrote:
Susanna,
I have done NOTHING to you to warrant you questioning my honesty, trustworthiness, and integrity. It is as simple as that. You're not a friend. This is all another little sick drama played out by one of the trolls or by Tamryn herself. Fine. I expect to see it plastered all over that libel thread for entertainment purposes, and you'll no doubt parade in and play innocent and disillusioned, right? If you are indeed sincere and a real person then you've betrayed me. We spoke about you not wanting to get involved. And you're the one that involved yourself, so don't email me anymore. Ever.
I've asked you several times now to not email me. You're the person that began this. I frankly don't care one iota about your sick little drama escapades. Next email from you goes the official complaint route. I don't want to hear from you ever again.

Then, when I address it (respectfully) with you, you become hostile, and threaten to have me tracked (and accuse me of being someone I am not).
I don't care about your legal issues. All I've done is talk about comics with you. Tom Stillwell brought up your legal issues. And for that, you take MY head off.

That's very sad, Rick. And you mention making a formal complaint - for what? All I've done is participate in your group and trade emails with you. I have no idea who Tammy is. Whatever it is you think you know is completely wrong. I was really beginning to empathize with you, Rick. And to have you respond to me this way, when I've been NOTHING but decent to you, is hurtful beyond belief.

It's quite draining, isn't it?
I've had to take a couple of long term breaks from the thread to get it out of my system.
It depressed that nothing has changed in all these years, there are still young creators being rooked, there are still poor people going unpaid, there are still folks who will take the word of a deadbeat about the definition of copyright over the definition available online at the US Copyright Office, and there are so many people who will respond to this situation with their emotions ("OH! Why are those artists getting so worked up about this nobody publisher and using harsh language!") when they should be responding to the content.
To me, this isn't just about Olney, it's about a situation that is endemic to the creative arts, and if I have to spend the rest of my natural life dealing with people who get snarky when I get motivated about creator rights, so be it.
However, I predict he will never be gone for good unless he is 6 feet under. That's not a threat, that's just a fact.
People like this never go away.
They never stop.
People who disappear never to be seen again do so out of a fear of prosecution or a sense of shame. He has no fear of the consequences of his actions, and if repeatedly not even showing up for a court date isn't proof of that, I don't know what is.
And his actions show no sense of shame.
He's going to be at it for the rest of his life. In some form or another.
I'd bet money on it.
I have NEVER had one of his kind simply go away. It can be years later, but they always show up again. They are certain they are always right, and if they just wait long enough, the world will turn on their axis.
He'll be back. Mark my words.

Rick Olney
It takes considerable knowledge just to realize the extent of your own ignorance.
--Thomas Sowell, Creators Syndicate
"You would serve your self creative efforts at building a stronger readership for your finished efforts if you concentrated more on trying not to turn people off to sequential art. Those "fanboys" mature into adult readers every day. Alienating them with name calling and sarcastic talk from ignorant ilk will not help this business and hobby grow."
"I've never heard the civil rights movement or the advancement of gay rights in America described as a phenomenon or as being unique. Gee, isn't 'cool' to go to a convention and make small talk about who's killing the comic book entertainment industry THIS week? Let's blame it all on everyone else EXCEPT those people (sadly, in every aspect of this business & hobby) that fail to see how very ignorant they really are. I don't like people that are racists. I think the people of color in America have worked very hard to contribute to the betterment of American society. Gay bashers are ignorant also! They attack people that are different by choice or birth because of their victims sexual preference. People that verbally 'bash' or need to grasp a mental image of an imagined threat to THEIR sanctity are not worth knowing in my book. What about yours?"
BWAAAHAHHHAHHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!
"I'm not going to apologize for thinking the way I do. I talk with kids that read comics (and their parents) everyday. Since I've gone 'online' ... I've begun to get more feedback from other sources. I'm not an authority, nor do I present myself as one to this forum. I just know "the Truth" about this matter. It takes away from the hobby and business!"
"I've heard the kids talking about "fanboys" can you tell me what that is?"
Yeah, right ... like I need to be trying to explain the ignorant shortcomings of those of you that embrace this stereotypic wordage. But I try to ... while trying to recover from the question, hopefully bringing the conversation to a positive conclusion so we can send them some books to enjoy."
"And I've heard us described as "a club for fanboys" ... despite the fact that we're actually MORE top heavy with older members enjoying nearly every genre of comic produced today."
"As a society, we should never drop our guard when someone tries to "label" a group or contend that a kind of person is unacceptable."
" really believe that a person that is capable of tagging someone "a fanboy" is capable of calling gays and people of color derogatory and socially unacceptable names."
And my personal favorite...
"I'm for real ... I just wish I was ignorant and unkind enough to inspire a name for the other segments of fandom and the industry. "
Oh...and read how "Thomas Paine 99" responds to Rick, and it was later proven that "TP99" was really Onlney. BWAAHAAAHAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!

Hooooooooooooooly Hannah James!
Rick has serverely gone down the meltdown tubes. No wonder he's taking 10 days off. Usually its 2 days per meltdown at the most but my goodness he's gone off the rails this time.
I severely feel sorry for this poor woman, whom like most people just wanted to take part in a forum. Can I say that going back to my days at the MMC, Rick wanted me to generate some attention for the forums by bringing in my other professional friends in, BUT everytime I had someone sign up to partake on my board he would give them the third degree and make them feel like a criminal.
He all but asked for an essay on why people wanted to join his forum. (actually he did..)
Much like Larry said, and most all of us know to be true... HOW can you read these stories and act like this? With great power comes great responsibility, no evil shall escape my sight, INUCK-CHUCK! for God's sake! :p
"You betrayed me"
What in the blue hell?
"I don't have to tell you about my personal life"
True. No one needs to know about the time you pushed a kid in the mud in sixth grade or what you do in the privacy of your own home. However, if you are starting a group like this AND YOU ASK SOMEONE TO BE ON THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS, you must be up front with any and all legal challenges facing the endeavor, because they will be guilty by association.
Fraud is still fraud if you know something is going on and stand silent on it. So asking this woman to be part of this group and continue to lie, cheat, and steal, (not in the good way like the late Eddie Gurrero) it will wind her up in the same pickle Dennis is in.
I used to feel sorry for Dennis, that he was going to be burned by the damming fires that got Rick but over the past few months... Whoever lumps themselves on this ship, knowing what we brought forth, knowing what he's done to others, gets what they deserve.

I was (again) rather appalled when he was mentioning his possible Native American heritage earlier. On the one hand, he mentions it a little bit as if he's proud of it. And yet.... he blames his "mean streak" (!) on that heritage. Talk about being racist!
And after sending Susanna a couple of the snottiest emails possible (accusing her of being Gail -- ooops, "Tamryn"), he then closes out with the "reasonable" voice claiming he'd been civil and polite throughout it all! Demented.
Tom... I'm sure you were quite polite and civil to Susanna. And James, thanks for getting these posted. Knowing what he does and STILL does... it's good for it to be exposed. And yes, that story about the Marine in North Carolina is one of a REAL Marine. My heart breaks for his family.
He was caught sock puppeting several times on comicon. As usual, he can't even keep his own lies straight.
Hey, Rick?
Everyone has tragedy in their lives. It doesn't usually turn them into revolting people who cheat everyone they know. Hell, some people even become better people after.

Can we add as probably RECENT sockpuppets -- ShavedBalls, and (I admit, I'm still not 100% sure, but suspect) Blackball07?
It would be nice to verify one way or another that second one, but... sometimes life has its mysteries.

Wow, my sympathies to Susanna! She remained gracious throughout. All she said was that she'd responded to Tom's email. I guess her failure to reassure the paramecium about what she said in that response made him jump to the paranoid conclusion! He's ... yup, a jerk.
It makes me realize that I got off easy. Of course, I started out being contaminated by association with that nasty meany Chuck Dixon.
What's really daffy is that he must know that this stuff will go public at some point. He's assumes that Susanna is a spy, so he writes this outrageous provocative mail. Does he think these letters make him look clever? Or wise? Or witty? Or businesslike?
I used to think he was just bad, but now I think he's also quite mad.

When the emails were more civil (before the meltdown), Rick told her that Tom was full of crap - and she replied that she'd read about CBR, and had NO desire to be involved in any of this stuff.
Tom wrote back to her, and said while she and Rick were trading emails, he was losing a default judgment in court for not showing. And that the board Rick was asking her to join was for a false charity that had misrepresented itself to REAL charities. So she asked Rick about it - and he went bonkers.

Oh. It's over? Oh thank heavens. I dig you both so much.
Hey---remember that time that Rick Olney had integrity worthy of a Marine, helmed that awesome original comic book, and had that convention everyone enjoyed?
Umm,
NO?

Nat, thank you for reposting a point that caught my attention ----
I'll never survive losing my mom and mother-in-law so close to each other and totally unexpectedly. It amazes me that these jerks are not able to see that THAT alone would destabilize a person and/or business to a degree.
Ummmmmm..... As far as we can tell he is surviving the loss. He even goes on later to say that in spite of some specific health problems, he's doing fine.
And sorry.... but although we all have suffered or will suffer the deaths of people close to us, most of us don't grind to a full halt because of them. Even if we wish the world would indeed stop moving forward.
I was at work the day my brother called me to tell my my father had died. At work in LA. My brother was in Philadelphia. My parents lived in Houston. I walked from that call into a production meeting, paid attention, made no announcement of my personal loss in order not to disrupt an important process for our organization, and then spoke to my supervisor after the meeting. He looked at me slightly horrified that I had not spoken up before, excused me from the rest of the work day, gave me the time off to fly back to Houston for the funeral. I went back to my desk, and realized I was actually in shock, and would not really have been capable of continuing to finish out the work day - although I'd initially thought I could (because my co-workers counted on me).
But "I'll NEVER SURVIVE"???? Oh, please.

Geico may or may not be evil. The Gecko has an english accent so he might be plotting to destroy the world, or he may just be light in the flippers. :p

And, for those of you who were extending the benefit of the doubt to Jason Dube - there was a post from HIM to Susanna, after she mentioned in the yahoo group that she'd seen THIS board, thought it was a witch hunt, and posted a message IN SUPPORT of Rick:

Susanna,
I was in the same boat. I have been working for Rick
for about half a year now (AND GETTING PAID FOR IT)
and I can't tell you how many emails and messages I
got bombarded with about warning me about Rick. But,
he has been nothing but kind and nice to me, and our
comicbook project is moving right along.
*****************
Getting paid for half a year, eh, Jason? If Rick had made ONE SINGLE EFFORT to make good on his debts, I'd say more power to you. But all he does is insult people he owes, threaten them, and then skip out on court. You do realize if his assets are seized, that means no paycheck for YOU?
Where's your integrity, man?
And to everyone else:
Susanna later revised her opinion (in the middle of Rick's blowup), as demonstrated by the short note she sent Tom and me: "I read the thread. You were right about Rick, in every instance. Thank you."

What the fuck?
RICK! You are the biggest IDIOT I know!
:)
Who the hell is 'Ophelia?' I never even KNEW about the Gutters when Rick was doing his moronmonkeydance. I heard about it much, much later. I visited the gutters maybe twice, under my own name, and to my memory, I posted exactly zero. Honestly, that bit I don't remember very well, but I do know I didn't like the Gutters and didn't feel like it was a good place to be.
But I can guarantee I was never this 'Ophelia' person. Anyone have a CLUE what he's talking about?
And Rick, do the math. If I'd known you were a racist-posting meltdown prone bullshit artist, do you think I would ever have attended the Shitty Mini Con?
What an idiot.
And if you're such a genius and you know so much, then compare this woman's ISP with mine, why don't you? Seems simple enough.
I have no idea where she lives or posts from, but I can pretty much guarantee you it's nowhere near me. I don't live in Washington, for one thing, genius.
What a goddamned idiot. How funny is it that he has a EUREKA moment every time he does his detektif werk, and he's ALWAYS WRONG?
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Susanna, if you find this forum, I'm sorry you ever met this deadbeat weirdo, but I'm glad you got out before you got involved in more of his fake comics endeavors.

I can tell you right now where "ISP tracking" will take him -- to a company called "Google", the providers of the gmail web-based mail system. So now he's got the identity of the send narrowed down to someone who uses Google services...

Remember that Rick has NO sympathy for anyone else's tragedies, not when they need money he's promised and he's cheated them out of. The number of people who wrote him to tell him of tragedies and needs, and they'd get back a promise that he'd toss in a t-shirt when he got around to paying them, which of course, he NEVER does.

I have never been through (and will never be through) Marine training. Haven't studied it closely.
But somehow I suspect that they don't train you to be massively ineffective for months if someone close to you dies. Perhaps they even try to instill on you the ability to, well, soldier on in the face of adversity.

"Chris,
Just to give you some perspective, the very first message board meltdown I had to deal with here, way back in '98, was centered around RICK Olney. Somehow he had pissed off everyone on the board and ended up making threats about lawsuits and showing up at people's houses and beating the shit out of them etc.
I've been cutting him slack, and getting promises from him that he would never do it again, ever since. This particular instance is the fifth that I count, and came after I made it clear to him he was on his last chance. "

Tom Stillwell.
Somebody he knew made some kind of connection with Susanna, and he wrote to her. She brought that up with Rick, and he jumped all over it, proclaming Tom a hater, and promising Susanna that Tom would be dealt with.
Tom wrote her again, and brought up the new default judgment, among other things. Susanna defended Rick as being a decent guy - and Tom told her to check him out more closely, then said she should ask the opinion of others from this forum (whom she could also check out). Namely, me and Larry.
That was when I found out I actually knew Susanna (from when I lived in Washington, and was Paul Chadwick's neighbor) - and that's when the floodgates opened.
But other than the two initial emails from Tom, Susanna had no interaction with us during Rick's meltdown. That came about from a single respectful email she sent. And Rick demolished his credibility with her all on his own.
