Does anyone have a suggestion on a good trade to introduce my wife
to the Birds of Prey? She really digs Huntress and Canary and has wanted
some sort of good intro story. She isnt a big comic fan so it should be some sort of stand alone story.

All of 'em, but Sensei and Student is a goody if you only want one.

To Cam - today's big prize! :)

Sensei and Student. Then the Prequel - Of Like Minds.

Yeah, I think "Sensei and Student" is the best of the bunch, as far as being really entertaining and having a good story that is fairly self-contained.

Of course, I have a thing for Cheshire, so ...

I vote for "Sensei & Student," too, though honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the BoP trades written by Gail Simone.

Hell, I'd buy her shopping list.

Prelude. Not prequel. A prequel comes out after the thing it's a prequel to.

Although, really, Of Like Minds isn't a prelude, either. It's just the one that came before Sensei and Student.

I agree, Sensei and Student. My friend liked that and she doesn't even read comics regularly. :)

I agree. Definately S&S.

Mind you, the one girl to whom I showed that trade stopped reading when Dinah and Cheshire went pool-wrestling. :o

Another of my friends said that he didn't read comics because they were childish. So I showed him the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. He NOW thinks that they are stupid and violent. *Annoyed Sigh*

People can always find a reason not to get into something, if they are just looking for one.

Actually I'd start with "Of like Minds" It's a great introduction to the characters, witty and has lovely art.

*slaps forehead*

Duh. Thanks for the correction - too true.

I view it as a prelude, since I started reading with Sensei and Student. :) Again, my own feelings on the matter, and not at all accurate, much like my earlier choice of words.

You know, that's the one tricky thing about recommending "Sensei & Student" as somebody's first BoP arc. If I had to pick a favorite arc, it would be that one, but then I can't imagine somebody reading S&S and NOT falling in love with the characters and the tone and then immediately wanting to read more. And if they're going to do that, it works better to read them in order and start with "Of Like Minds." Among other things, I think the relationships between Huntress and Oracle and between Huntress and Canary are even more effective -- and more moving -- if you get in on the ground floor and start with "Of Like Minds."

I always say "Sensei & Student" is my favorite arc, but then every time I re-read "Of Like Minds," I spend the whole time saying to myself, "DAMN, this is great stuff -- is 'Sensei & Student' REALLY better than this?"

I've loved all of Gail's BoP arcs, and as an initial one-two punch, "Of Like Minds" and "Sensei & Student" are pretty spectacular. But I do think that "Of Like Minds" has a tendency to be very underrated, even among the hardcore BoP fans.

Plus "Of Like Minds" has major sentimental value for me because it was where I realized I'd just found a writer whose work I was going to really, really love.

Enjoyed S&S...

BTW, LordJustice, if it's Huntress and Canary your wife likes, might I recommend Cry for Blood and The Longbow Hunters? They contain a lot of the things in those character's backstories that are dealt with (sort of) in BOP.

I so loved S&S, Of Like Minds did have me saying damn, this Gail lady can write. I think I should go reread some Canary things tonight since the party I was going to was canceled :( oh well.

I recommend both OLM and S&S together, maybe DC could reoffer them sometime down the road as a two packaged set or something.

A Birds of Prey hardcover, with "Of like Minds" and "SEnsei And Student" along with Gail's pitch, Benes sketches and other bonuses?

:)

I love, love Gail's run, but I also think the very first Birds of Prey trade, story by Dixon, art by Gary Frank, is very, very good, particularly the opening sequence with Canary taking on a bunch of car thieves. That encapsulates everything that was good about Dixon's run.

Always wanting to see Canary let loose like that without Green Arrow made me laugh when she kicked open the door and hit that poor sap in the crotch.

It also has good Vic Sage characterisation in. Pity we probably won't seeing more of him after 52 though. *Sigh*
