View Full Version : Frank Cho's Interesting Interview...

Now that we are done discussing Alex Ross... perhaps it is time to look at Frank Cho's interview at Newsarama (http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/MightyAvengers/Cho_01.html).

No, I have no qualms about drawing men. They're actually easier to draw since I don't have to worry about making them attractive.

Some people I know happen to like attractive men.

I'm still tinkering with it. His armor's gonna look less like pretty boy Brad Pitt in Troy and more like a filthy Orc in Lord of the Rings with a dash of Frazetta's Death Dealer thrown in.

Well I guess we know Frank does not like attractive men.

Quite frankly, I didn't care for Sentry. I thought he was a big nancy boy.

Now that is just homophobic.

Now that is just homophobic.

Can you really be considered homophobic if you insult a fictional heterosexual man? Isn't that a "tree falling in the woods and no one hearing it" situation?

Is this a joke thread?

No disrespect if not, I'm just not seeing the same thing you are.

To be fair, Sentry does look like a big Nancy Boy. Saying so isn't really Homophobic. :D

I thought it was funny, Tommy.

I wanna' see Cho write a book where he embellishes men's junk as much as he does women's knockers. Could you imagine him on Spider-Man with Pete's package bouncin' around in those tights while he swung around Manhattan?

Oh... oh man, I just ruined my pants.

First of all, Sentry is awesome! Second, whats wrong with making guys unattractive??

Ryan Day

Is "Nancy boy" a term for homosexuals? I thought it was just like "sissy". I guess you could quibble about how appropriate it is, but I don't think it's explicitly homophobic. Maybe its origins are, but that doesn't mean Cho's usage is.

As for the rest of it... It's Frank Cho. He makes (a good part) of his living by drawing attractive, buxom women in a genre that is marketed predominantly to an adolescent (in mind if not in body) male audience. He's doing what he's paid to do; at least he's not hiding it behind lame justifications and excuses.

NOTHING! Except for Ms. Marvel having breasts roughly the size of Mexico. (And not dinky ass New Mexico.)

I just think if you are going to make one person look like she is hatching Ostrich eggs on her chest you should do the same for everyone. Particularly when you have a wanna be actor on your team.

Yeah, I agree with you. Good, bad, or indifferent, he's generally right. One of the prerequisites for being a female superhero is big boobs and a tiny waist. Men tend to be allowed to have more physical variety.

And I think people throw around the word 'homophobic' a little too easily.

Most women in comic books are suppose to be hot looking!

The statement could be read as "I find it easy to draw attractive men, so I don't have to work as hard when drawing them".

I'll keep saying it until it happens: I want a Power Girl monthly from Vaughn & Cho.

Cho does draw my idea of the perfect woman and my wife could easily be a Cho girl.

You should make a fan film where Vampirella, Power Girl, and Brandy from Liberty Meadows all move in together, and Mrs. Jay could play 'em all. Sorta' like an Eddie Murphy movie, but better because she has awesome jugs.

Make that four. Frank Cho's remarks seem to indicate that he thought this Sentry chap was a wuss, not that he's the Asiatic version of Fred Phelps. Anyways, he needs to stop giving interviews and get back to Liberty Meadows, darn it! ('course, I'll be taking Mighty Avengers for a variety of reasons, his artwork included.)

Bad Canary is still better than many other supposed greats. Shaddup and drink that urine-colored water you call beer, wouldja? Besides, Australia gave us Yahoo Serious in the 1980s; you have no standing to call anyone bad. And wasn't Miss Newton-John a resident of those parts as well? :p

I've actually actively looked for a Power Girl costume online for her but nobody makes one (yet, at least). I was going to buy her a Supergirl costume cheap after Halloween but I wasn't able to get to the costume stores before they closed for the season.

Give her darker and longer hair and she's already Brandy:
(not the best pic, but you get the idea...)

I just think if you are going to make one person look like she is hatching Ostrich eggs on her chest you should do the same for everyone.Well, you've just described the standard Cho drawing, all of his female characters come from the same body mold. What I like about his art is that he can also draw different faces, and different facial expressions, really really well.

In response to the topic starter, I say Frank Cho's entitled to his opinions regarding this! My impression is just that he is this guy that never left the frat house.

I like Frank Cho's stuff, I'm a bit late learning about it, but I do like it.

I think he's one of the guys who draws cheesecake in a way that doesn't make me want to tear my own eyes out. And I think the gags in Liberty Meadows are funny and well-done.

I do sometimes get that frat-boy vibe (that i have to say I'm completely sick of...I don't mind sexy women at all, but they have to be more than that if I'm supposed to care about them. Hot pants are not enough) sometimes from his stuff, but I don't think his comments here are that bad. If a woman had said, "I only like to draw hot guys," we might find it a bit sad, but we also wouldn't condemn her for being sexist, I don't think.

I think there's room in comics for cheesecake. I just want to see the top tier talent out there realizing that there IS a female audience and to quit acting like none of us exist or matter. Other than that, fine, wet t-shirts, who cares? A healthy mix of sex is kind of a natural in this medium and taking it out would really serve no one, in the end.

Speaking of serving in the end, did you see Ryan Choi's naked ass in Atom number one? Awoooogah!

and then you had naked Giganta in issue 2! You're equal opportunity!

I think Cho is referring to the difference in drawing men and women..
Drawings of men and monsters can be rougher edged and have thicker linework around the faces and bodies... whereas when you apply that approach to women it tend to make them look more androgynous...

OzBat!

This is all also ignoring the fact that his protagonists in just about all of his man-versus-monkey art are of the strong, loinclothed-only, well-built and hansome variety. Even if you're focusing more on the girl in the bikini being threatened by the monkey. And damn if the man can't draw monkeys!!

Cho is not sexist. He just knows what he likes drawing.

Imo, guys drawing the sexiest women right now are Ashley Wood and Chris Bachalo. Wood's an unredeemable pervert yet the breast size is just right. Melons aren't sexy...
