I keep hearing the Hoff is big in Germany.

Can pip and/or any German posters explain the appeal without resorting to the infinite Hasselhoff crotch image?

Well, I think Knightrider was huge here (Germans dig the car). And then the success of Baywatch in European markets led to it being uncancelled in the US, so Hoff ended up probably doing more promotion and talkshow appearances here than in the US. Which (for some ungodly reason) led to an album, with a single that was mostly bought by 13 year olds that went to #1. The album itself ended up in the DM 5.- bins very quickly and it's become more of an in-joke that Hoff is considered a big deal here... I think his new single (yes, he has one...) did much better in the UK than here in Germany, where a new generation of 13-year-olds prefers Paris Hilton.

The last time I heard Hoff's big hit single "Looking For Freedom" it was performed by drag artists in East German communist uniforms at this year's gay pride in Cologne. And it felt strangely right.

It's true, we have a knack for that.

Now you did it. Its only a matter of time before Pip is going to post the psychedelic photo of David that makes me sick to my stomach. After that he's going to post the dog photo that's just wrong on so many levels.

Nah, this has already derailed into a discussion of German culture, so here is one of our national delicacies, Labskaus:

That...is not nearly as disgusting as it should be.

Except for the fried egg on top.

It's a bit like some Rose Nylund might come up with on Golden Girls. It looks bad, but really isn't when it's done right. It's actually a mix of cooked meat, mashed potatoes and beets, the latter giving it that unfortunate color.

Actually, the colour is not that bad. I originally thought it was a kind of steak tartare. Then I looked it up on Wiki.

Do you do yours with herring or ham? Wikipedia says either are an option (in addition to the corned beef).

I think that could be right, but that is quite likely in part down to a big push by the 4PM-7PM weekday presenter on one of the UKs biggest radio stations. Novelty factor, as such.

As far as I know, his new reality TV show is not going to air on any German TV channel.

What he said.

And I think Hasselhoff is quite popular with the older ladies. He appeared recently in several "music shows" directed at the older generation.

Around a year ago, I remember talking to a woman visiting from Germany, and I asked her about the Hoff's popularity in Germany.

She said his music was popular with a variety of age groups (Like many top 40 pop songs are), and that people predominantly liked it because it's a song in English which the German populace could easily decipher the words to, due to the Hoff practically talk-singing (Is that a word?) through the song.

I guess he's got that "Tom Jones factor". Guys who have grown kind of gross, and yet still gets panties tossed at them.

Tom has finally decided to age gracefully, both with his music and his look:
