View Full Version : So...whats the deal with Supergirl?

I know NOTHING about this book, but for some reason I picked up #11 and 12 today. Now, I actually really enjoyed them, I find this Supergirl's personality to be very...strange, and somehow interesting. I was curious though, I read the solicitations on #12, and not only was the book not written by Kelly as advertised, but the plot was completely different as well. Is Kelly still the writer, or is it Palmiotti and Gray now? Or did Kelly just need a fill in to catch up?

Also, I havent read the Outsiders in god knows how long, is Supergirl now a member or is it just a short lived plot in her own book?

And last, having only read 2 issues of the series I am curious, whats the general opinion of the book? People like it? Hate it? I'm thinking about adding it, I very much enjoyed the issues I read but if it was a rare 2 quality issues, I may hold off and just try and grab some more off the shelves first.

Thanks!

General opinion is that people hate it, but those are the same people who dont even read it anymore. (Not trying to paint everyone with the same brush, really)

Gray and Palmiotti are just writing that issue so it can lead into their new TERRA mini-series. Kelly is still the series writer and should be back by next issue (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

Myself, and a few here on CBR, think Kelly's starting to hit his stride on this book, finally finding a voice, so you may want to stick around if you liked the previous two issues.

You should pick up the next issue, even if it wont pick up the threads that Kelly left dangling, for the Amanda Conner art alone.

Yea, I loved Conner's art in #12, kara's expressions were fantastic. The part where she tell's Boomer (whoever Boomer is...) that she "met a girl" was damn funny, the little eye roll was great :D

So Conner's going to be the new artist? That's good. I sort of enjoyed this last issue because it broke away from Kelly's unfortunate writing style, but I really loved Amanda's art, so if she were to remain on the book, there's a better chance I might check it out again, once Kelly decides what the plot's going to be.

Not according to the solicit, it isn't going to be Conner.

Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund will be back on art chores, with a cover by Ken Lashley.

Ah, well, nevermind. I'll check out the first issue of that Terra mini, but I can't say I'm too enthralled by the character from this cameo. Great art, but a character that should've stayed deeply buried and forgotten.

I picked up the latest issue because of Terra. I wasn't very interested in the Supergirl stuff and I dislike Outsiders so their inclusion was just okay.

Terra was cool, though, and I loved Conner's art. I may even pick up next month's issue because of her art (and I'm curious about Power Boy).

Um.. this was the first appearance of Terra III.

Terra I and II were kinda interesting... especially when it turned out they were the same person, but with amnesia. II was terrified of finding out that she was really that psycho bitch I, so when her brother got back the DNA results he lied to her and said "nope, you're your own person".

Okay. So?

The Terra character should never have been revived, whether or not this one has anything to do with the last one. Especially considering the last one. She should've stayed dead after The Judas Contract and had it stuck.

Amanda Conner's art is AMAZING. It would be the bomb diggity doo doo dog if she stayed on this title.

I'm a new reader to SG, but I dropped the book after the Kandor arc soley because Benes wasn't on it anymore. But if Connor stays I'm commin' back.

Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund are remaining on art duties. There has been no announcement to the contrary.

This was a fill-in issue, on both the writing and the art front.

Yea I heard.:(

It's unfortunate, but oh well. I'll see how the book goes from here.

Honestly, as much as I like Amanda Conner's art, I don't really feel that she would be a good fit with Joe Kelly's writing style.

It's just a gut feeling. But I don't think they mesh. Whereas Kelly and Churchill fit together like tomato and mozzarella. So, I am glad to get my Joe Kelly back, and to get my Ian Churchill back. I can't wait, and it is (supposed) to be this month.

We'll see.

No, I think that would be the fastest way to convince me to stop reading Supergirl.

Her art was interesting to see for one issue but its faaaaaaaar too cartoony compared to the beautifully drawn Kara in all the other SG issues.

It didn't even feel like Supergirl as a result, and the cover Conners did was probably the ugliest Supergirl cover, in my subjective opinion, that I've seen so far.

I really think I prefer Churchill most of all, though I've also really enjoyed Ed Benes' Supergirl art as well, including her cameos in Superman.

I look back at Supergirl #0 now and still find the art Churchill did just phenomenal. I prefer the more realistic style.

Churchill's allright in my book, although I like Benes' work the most. I think Ed only did one issue of SG in the Kandor arc, but it was still pretty amazing nonetheless. His run on JLA is great so far too.

Nice avatar btw :D

He also drew Superman v2 223 which SG was in the entire time. I was nice to see her draw some of her in her normal outfit since she wasn't in it in the KAndor issue that he did.

Thanks on the avatar, lol, your avatar is my other favorite superman picture I almost made and avatar out of too. They look like parallels of eachother.

Supergirl is my 3rd favorite DC book. It's great, but this issue was pointless and dumb. Now next month is going to be good again when we get back to the original writers. But personal opinion, the book is great.

I agree. This issue was a nice change of pace, and the art was very appropriate for the joke-laiden dialogue, but it felt like a different book entirely. Kara seemed a bit too mouthy and sure of herself (despite all of talk about how she didn't know who she was).

I couldn't agree more.

And that's P&G's style, from what I can tell. And I love their writing on other books.

The last couple of issue of SG have been really dissapointing. This whole "finding herself" plot was just way overdone. It was like a meta-Fast Times at Ridgemont High movie. Just bad.

Supergirl with the Outsiders may just improve things a bit.

Was there a scene where Kara got home from working at Hotdog Harry's and fantasized about Nightwing revealing his nipples while he went for a swim? 'Cause I'd buy that.

Meaning the issues were all about Supergirl suffering the standard cliche's of teenaged angst movies and other dreck.

Here she is the most powerful person on earth, kin to the most beloved hero on earth and she trying to fit in to some lame-ass high school clique. It was bad. Just didn't like it all.

Terra in the latest issue hit the nail on the head for me, considering Kara wear's the "S" she should feel more responsibilty to being a hero.

Only she's a vacuous, vain and selfish little brat.

Sorry for the rant...but the last couple of issue really irked me.

Well, the general thing with her is back story.

Her father was a facist darwinian psychopath who sent her to Earth to kill Clark so she'd be the the only remaining Kryptonian.

That's what she's coming from, ending up due to a fluke in a world where Clark's grown up, she's the younger cousin, and what applied to her on Krypton because of her parents (it's hinted she was forced to kill her own mother) is now a blank slate. So partly, it's because she's still a teenager, and also because she's *this* close to cracking because of her past.

But, what can I say, I give the character a chance. I expect to be shoutted down by those who've never read the book.

Well that's fine, make her a nut-case. I can live with that.

This whole going to high school and being so whiny was just too much.

As well it's been going on for some time now and paying four bucks a pop for all this rigamorole is a bit steep.

She was in high school for one issue, just to show that the secret id was not the direction to go for her.

Kara is a very interesting character, AFAIC. And Kelly is turning the book into gold.

What's interesting is that I've never thought Kara was whiny. She has all sorts of "issues", but whining is not one of them. She's a lot more likely to threaten you with heat-vision than to whine at you. :)

No.

But she drew a horribly cute drawing of her kissing Nightwing in her little notebook. There were hearts all around them too.

Meh. Let me know when Kelly starts parodying Seventies and Eighties college movies. If there were ever an issue of Outsiders where Owen and Dick panty raided the Global Guardians, I'd buy that sucker and bronze it.

I find the Supergirl comic refreshing and nostalgic too. Kara in the Pre Crisis days always dated someone that was on the run from some intergalactic police force but she was always this goody two shoes but the new Supergirl book shows that she has a dark side that is being explored so I really like this book.

I just started reading it. I find it confusing, but I'm glad she's not some bland happy go lucky do gooder. I sure wish the Kandor thing was better handled. I liked it, but ugh, that ending, ugh. I hope Ultraman and the gang stick around. That dude is nuts.
