Do you ever find yourself buying a Trade collecting a particular story arc or mini even if you have the individual issues? Do you reserve this for your favourite series or story, so you can have it all collected in one book?
Do trades last longer than indivual issues?

I find trades are easier to display, while issues are easy to store. But really, should I be spending double the money on the same story?

For example, when Civil War is collected in trade, will you pick that up even if you have the individual issues, so that you can read it all in one sitting and not have to tolerate dated ads, cheap paper and pulling the comic in and out of mylar bags?

just wondering.

For me, it would have to depend on what story it is.

Personally, I don't own both the issues and the trade when it comes to a particular story arc, but I have considered buying a collection of the issues.

Generally speaking though, if I have the issues I wouldnt buy the trade unless my issues are signed/graded and I wouldnt want to damage them by re-reading them.

Buy a trade if you missed the issues, if you have the issues, why bother with the trade?

That being said, I think Marvel should look into releasing oversized hardcover editions as opposed to just regular hardcovers. I own the Absolute Hush, and it is gorgeous. I'd get the Absolute Kingdom Come, but I already have the trade.

If they made an Absolute Civil War (I know it wont because "Absolute" is DC), I'd definately purchase that for the oversized McNiven art.

Hope that helps.

On occassion. I buy the Hardcovers for Astonishing X-Men and Ultimate X-Men. And I'll be getting the trade (HC if possible) for Ultimates 2, Agents of Atlas, and X-Men: The First Class. Mostly my trade purchases are for stuff I don't get in monthlies. Like HC's of Ultimate FF and Ultimate Spider-Man.

Only for a couple of trades:

Infinity Gauntlet and Trial of Galactus. I only have partial issues of the second one.

I don't ever wait for a trade. I always buy the monthlies I'm interested in and, if I decide to change my mind, I'll try and track down the original issues.

That being said I do have about 200 trades. I moved across Canada and left most of my comics at home in storage (22,000 of em) but knew I'd want to read SOME comics. So I bought stuff like Kingdom Come, Avengers Forever, Watchmen, Squadron Supreme, Dark Knight, Daredevil etc. that was stuff I already had.

I will also buy trades of stuff I own if it's on sale and I like the story... it makes it easier to take it wth me on a trip. I bought (a few months ago now) Preacher Vol's 1-9 on eBay for $10.00 SHIPPING INCLUDED!!!

I buy trades mainly for books I can't afford like Golden or Silver Age stuff. Masterworks, Archives are great and I just got Captain America The Classic Years Vol's 1 & 2 which reprint the first 10 issues of Cap between the 2 volumes. I also just got Batman Chronicles Vol 2 and my next purchase is Vol 3 of the Neal Adams Batman hard cover collection.

Not me. I barely have enough money to spend on comics.

Usually, if only so I don't have to lug around lots of issues when I reread. But I wait a year or more after it comes out, so the story's not so fresh in my mind. Or if I can find it on sale! :D

Occasionally.

In the case of Astonishing X-Men, I read it in monthly format, then buy the trade and send the individual issues to a cousin of mine who loves comics.

I only buy in trades but my LCS lets me read anything off the shelf because I help promote stuff to other customers and I tend to buy a lot of stuff.

At present the only trades I have for which I also have all the issues are the three She-Hulk volumes. Aside from simply supporting She-Hulk, it's because I can grab a single TPB off the shelf on my way out the door, and have enough reading material to keep myself entertained on a longish train trip or similar. Much easier than hauling around a bunch of issues, and She-Hulk's a story-rich comic that's worth re-reading every now and then.

Re-reading is the key factor for me - if a comic is such that I read it and shelve it, rarely to return, I'm certainly not going to spend more money just to have an easily-transportable version of it. I don't bag my issues, so if I do suddenly get the rare urge to re-read something I thought wasn't worth a trade, well, it's right there on the shelf, no worries.

I plan to get the main Civil War book for the same reason - it'll be a worthwhile amount of story in one book, and I'll shell out in order not to have to haul out seven individual issues whenever I feel like reading it.

Yes, I do.

If I have the single issues of an incomplete story I will get the trade because it will be easier to get than the individual issues.

No, I buy my monthlies, so I don't need the tpb's. I buy tpb's of stories that I find out about after they've been released, anything that I want to read thats presently being released in single issue format I will buy with each issue.

I gotta admit, for Marvel I almost ALWAYS only read the TPBs, primarily because of budget. Actually, I primarily read most of the stories, both Marvel and DC, through TPBs, simply because it's easier to read in TPBs (no waiting time) and you can follow the current events in comics through the internet.

Revoke my fanboy licence.

If I already have the issues, but it's a story I know I'm gonna wanna read over and over again, or know that I'll lend out to people a lot, I buy the trade to. But that's the exception.

(I have Ultimate Spider-Man 1-7 in issues, a softcover and 2 hardcovers; Marvels I have issues, softcover, hardcover)

Sometimes, also, if I have some of the issues, but there's a trade out that seems easier to buy than collecting the rest, I'll go that route.

Also, I'll sometimes buy issues when it's convenient to have them, even though I have them somewhere in trade. (e.g. I have the Trial of Galactus trade, but it's a strange mix of issues from Byrne's FF and it's easier to also own the issues to I can read Byrne's FF in order, or read them as they tie into other Marvel books I may be reading)

For me, it depends...

As a rule, I prefure single issues to Trades, but I do have a couple of Marvel Mini's in trade, but that's all.

I buy Usagi Yojumbo in trade, but that's because there's over 20 years of story, and at least most of the issues in the first five years (or more) are out of print, mostly nowhere to be found, and even if you find them, most issues are well over $500 each, a few of them much, much more.

But in general, I don't like Trades... I don't really know why. It's the same with books (novels), I don't like hardbacks, I have to get the paperback.

However, I do buy trades to try out a new series. If I like the series, I will go back and find the single issues (eBay is my freind!) and then sell the trade. Or, if I don't like the series, I just simply sell the trade. I brought the first Astonishing X-Men trade, and liked the series, so went back and brought the single issues, then sold the trade on eBay.

I don't get that... trades aren't THAT much cheaper (if at all) and isn't it easier to spend $3.00 than $20?

I know what you're going to say... trades are cheaper on Amazon... but there are plenty of online comic shops that give 40-60% off new issues now.

I suppose a main factor would be how re-readale a book is (or story arc). I wonder now, what stories/mini/trades you guys consider re-readable?

It really varies:

1) Stories that I think read better in trade, and that I'm pretty sure I'll want to re-read, I buy in trade as a general rule.

2) The exception to general rule 1): stories that I think read better in trade, but that are also in need of financial support (Cable & Deadpool, the Exterminators), I buy both the issues and the trade.

3) Stories that I like to read as individual issues, I buy as issues.

4) Regarding 3): where I liked the arc enough that I know I'll want to read it again, I'll buy the trade. If I really liked it, I'll buy the hardcover.

5) Where I missed the individual issues, I'll buy the trade.

I only buy floppies to sample a series I might be interested in. Otherwise, I only buy TPBs.

Only if the comic series is really really good. I plan to buy the Hard Covers of Annihilation even though I have all the books so far.

I have not picked up a single issue in a long time. However i did pick up all of Age Of Apocalypse as the trades, even though i all ready has the single issues for most of it.
