View Full Version : Why no Warlock in Annihilation?

Was just wondering.

Warlock and Thanos are two of my favorite cosmic characters even though I don't know them that much.

I know that Warlock is off somewhere, but why didn't the writers have Warlock in the story?

Just speculating...

From a writers standpoint, he's proved saved the universe enough times. It might be time to give someone else a bit of spotlight.

Also, I honstly think Warlock could beat Annihilus in 3 seconds flat with that soul gem. He's probably too much of a plot device to be involved in the story.

Since one of the main points in the book (for Thanos/Warlock/Silver Surfer at least) was to alter Thanos' role in the Marvel Universe. I think they ruled out Warlock only because he seems to be linked to Thanos in every story one of them is in. Now that the Mad Titan is dead (at least for a few cosmic arcs of whatever) there is room for more cosmic super villains to become popular, like Annihilus, hence: "Annihilation". Now that the cosmic characters are getting more ongoings and minis next year I'm sure you will see Adam Warlock soon after Annihilation is over.

Maybe he's refusing to help since Nova's nailing his ex.

Because Warlock has been overexposed in the past (well... so has Thanos) and the story is better off without him. ;)

They should have had more Quasar in it! :D

Poor Warlock ain't gonna be pleased when he finds out his girl is sleeping around, Drax just killed his best pal and the Illuminati are planning on stealing his soul gem :(

Wait...what? The Illuminati are planning on stealing the Soul Gem? When did this happen? And how exactly do they think they're going to get it from Warlock?

You think I'm joking? Andy Schimdt has said that Rocket Racoon will be in Annihilation.

Not anymore; here's the latest word on Rocket Raccoon (from the Ask Andy thread):

Bendis discusses it right here (http://www.newsarama.com/marvelnew/Illuminati/01/Illum01_Bendis.html), hasn't quite come about yet. The Illuminati aren't trying to steal all the gems, and I'd assume they're not after Warlock's gem. I'd think they're more just trying to get a fix on the other gems that aren't currently accounted for, make sure they aren't being abused. Reed has the power gem already.

Hey. Now's a good time to bring back Tyrant. He could stop the Annihilation Wave with ease and if they followed the story I've come up with, he'd be a big ass universal threat. Tyrant is one of the very few characters who, mainly due to lack of exposure, has really no low points. He gets a lot of respect among comic fans for his intriguing story and character as well as his power. If they bring him back now in the vision I have for him he'd gain even more of all of that.

Personally, I'd say his whole existence is a low point.

I mean, I only had limited exposure to him in the original COSMIC POWERS mini, but he struck me as incredibly lame at the time. He positively reeked of mid-'90s "kewlness."

Was I the only one who enjoyed Pak's take on Warlock? I thought it was...different. And a fresh take on him. Plus, I loved the outfit. It definately beat out that stuffy old cape he had fOrEvEr. Does anyone know how many issues that series lasted for? I only got the first issue, but my comic shop didn't get anymore after that one.

I really loved Pak's take, although not everyone on this board (or even this thread!) felt the same. The mini-series was four issues... I reccommend getting the other three through mail order (usually, I go to midtowncomics.com or mycomicshop.com). And don't read too much of this thread or the plot twist in issue four will be spoiled for you!

Thanks. You're a peach. So, would you prefer Pak's version of Adam or would you prefer Starlin's in Annihilation?

Tyrant- I don't know. I think if someone could actually do something with him, other than have him punk all the heroes just to show how powerful he is- he could be interesting. As it stands, that's all he's ever been used for. He has no real motivation, nothing unique.

I'd hate to see them suddenly bring him in to take care of the Annihilation wave out of the blue. If he'd appeared before, or had some previous part in the story, and they had some long range goal for him, I could buy it. Otherwise, it would be just another example of "Tyrant's a bad mo-fo because he can beat everyone else."

Tyrant needs to live up to his name- actually ruling or being tyrannical.

Here’s my idea for Tyrant. It’s not legendary or anything but further explains his origins and existence as well as pushing out a new story from already told information.

As revealed by Galactus himself in Silver Surfer #106 or #107 Galactus created Tyrant as a permanently subservient to him. Tyrant feeds of the biospheric energy of living planets and every planet Galactus consumes decreases Tyrant’s power. Last we saw Tyrant, he was missing half his body but hesaid he could regenerate so that works. Galactus escaped the Ultimate Nullifier’s explosion by dimensionally teleporting himself the hell out of there. It could easily be said Tyrant did the exact same thing (he is Galactus Jr. Kinda and we never saw too much of him for this ability to be ruled out). So Tyrant slips into another dimension but when he tries to get out, he finds he has landed himself in a new universe (there’s a crapload of these already. What’s one more?)

In this universe Tyrant is not linked with Galactus. Galactus’ existence is not withholding his powers and he can his proverbial bonds are broken as he draws on the unrestrained full power of this universe. He begins to conquer this universe, completely unstoppable and merciless; a cosmic dominating juggernaut. The Galactus and Eternity of this universe confront him in a desperate attempt to free the universe from his grasp. Eternity of course embodies the universe and is thus its existence and powers almost cancel out Tyrant’s own and it appears he’ll lose...until he starts to consume the universe and draw it into himself. (Other beings have done similar feats. Shuma-Gorath for one I think). As more and more of the energies and life of the universe are consumed by Tyrant, Eternity’s power weakens until such time that Tyrant effortlessly strikes it down. Seeing now that he has basically destroyed this universe and the only thing he can rule over is rubble, he finishes up drawing in every last bit of it and then departs.

He finds another universe and uses his power to destroy both Galactus and Eternity, consuming their powers and then ruling for eons and eons unchallenged in this universe. However, eons there is hardly any time in the 616 and so when he travels back to 616 and sees the current state of affair swith the Annihilation Wave, he lies in the waiting for their inevitable victory or defeat. Perhaps a shadow of him in a panel with something ominous written. "a figure awaits the coming end to this comis quarrel and plans to claim the spoils from whoever emerges the victor." After he does return, we can get a few issues documenting his travels in the other universes and somehow discover how he's come into these godly new powers.

His inevitable end can come via a plot device. Galactus of the 616 still remains the inhibitor to Tyrant having full blown access to the powers of the 616 universe. Thus, after a long lengthy time where various parts of the universe are conquered and/or destroyed by Tyrant and his forces, he battles the 616 Galactus who has consumed Eternity itself. Thus, at the maximum power he can reach, Galactus battles and defeats the more powerful Tyrant. The battle, of course, has to be massive with waves of energy described as shaking the very reality and the effects being felt in other universes. And it has to look good. =P

Tyrant is eventually defeated and then...who knows. I know it's rough and all but I thought of it yesterday in my head. So..if it really blows, bummer.

Hmmm... that's a tough one to answer without giving too much away about the end of the Warlock mini...
