View Full Version : The Perfect Geeky Gift for Typo Tot
Typo Lad

I thought of a great gift for Tot's birthday this year.
We already have all her Chanukah gifts (Suzannah wants to make sure she gets a gift every night. If there's none from family, we'll give her one). They're the ususal dolls and stuff. I wanted to get her something different for her birthday. Something geeky.
Yesterday her fairly bare bedroom walls and love of certain super heroes gave me an idea.
I called up a good friend who's a pretty good artist...then i called a certain person i know who works at a print shop...
Tot doesn't know it yet, but she'll be getting a poster of her new favorite super hero... Zatanna.
What's really nice is my artist friend is tweaking it to make the costume more in keeping with Jewish standards of modesty (shirt less clingy, adding a skirt).
Now I'm sitting here wondering if I know any other artist friends who would make her other two favorite heroes for her...
When the art's done, I'll post it here.
Stellar

I didn't know if you wanted your name given out!
Wonder Woman, of course.
Her costume'd be a trick to make modest though, so I'm thinking Mary Marvel.

She's still not so into them. Loves the comics, but I haven't let her see the cartoons.

There are a few Elseworld variations that could work, plus the golden age skirt.
Mary Marvel is an excellent choice.
Hmmm, I might be able to help with this (aside from the printing). I'll let you know.

Jeff, I'm thinking the same.. Morts, what level of tzniut do you follow? I do not quite recall.

...
Honestly, if I had pictures from "Daddy's friend with the comics and the hair" and "Oh right! Her! She gave me a video!" that would rock.
(names are for peers, I guess)
Edit: As for level of Tzniut...
For fictional characters, pants are fine as long as they aren't painted on. Skirts are better, as close to the knee as possible. Sleeveless is not prefered and long sleve is best. Boobs busting out are a no-no, obviously.

You could always give her the Golden Age skirt and use her big cape to cover anything else. Or go with the old Wonder Girl costume.

However, and don't rip me for this, but I like the last picture of WW in this one.

Okay, it's not the best picture, but I always thought Wonder Woman should lose the bathing suit look if she's not swimming. Giving her pants is a good idea. Although, I like the idea of giving her straps too. I know, I know, I'm practically covering up every inch of skin on Wonder Woman, but I still think someone can make her look powerful and sexy without having her in a thong and the danger of a boob popping out of her top.

How modest does it need to be.
You could go with something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/Wonder-Woman-Journey-Begins/dp/0060565217/sr=1-7/qid=1165449002/ref=sr_1_7/002-5339282-0923212?ie=UTF8&s=books
Maybe round it out a bit, give it a bit more Trina Robbins Golden Age style.

But Mary Marvel rocks.

It's the main reason for my hetero* man-crush on him. If my dad had been anything like Morts, my disposition would bear a faint resemblance to "well-adjusted."
* - Ever since Morts' friend "J" said "explain the man-crush thing; you don't set off my gaydar," I've felt it necessary to add "hetero" to make things clearer.

In other words, the exact opposite of the direction DC opted for the Zatanna poster, as seen in the new solicits (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=9134):
http://images.comicbookresources.com/solicits/dccomics/200703/dcdirect/Zatanna-poster.jpg
Since when does Zatanna have a low-cut blouse? If Sequential Tart still had its Bizarre Breasts column, this might qualify. And the bottom of Zatanna's costume is so revealing that I'd be ashamed for anyone to see it on my wall.

Ick. That's about like the covers for the Zatanna miniseries that was a part of the Seven Soldiers event.
This is my favorite version of the stage magician costume:

Not too revealing, but still sexy. All it would need is a skirt, as Morts says above, to be reasonably modest.

In honor of the holiday, I think Typo Girl should get action figures of two great Jewish heroines:

You know Hod, I bet drawing a "modest" Power Girl'd be a real challenge. A fun one, mind you.
Although the only way Tot knows her is from her JLU comics, and isn't all that fond of her.
Rob, aside from the fact that you need to learn how to not be a bandwidth leech, and the fact that her name is May, the main problem is the goal is to get heroes Tot knows.

"Bandwidth Leech"? Sounds like an idea for a new supervillain ....
Mea culpa on the misspelling of May.
And as for Tot's heroes, why don't you give her action figures of her parents? She can't have any greater role models than that.

Very nicely done, and a good compromise. It captures the essense of the character while still exposing only her neck and face. The Z on her belt being backwards is a nice subtle touch.
