It may a bit early, I mean I still haven't listened to Joanna Newsomb's Ys which is supposed to be good, but looking at last year's thread, I posted it on December 5 too, so I guess it's time:

1.Mojave 3 Puzzles Like You – Perfect pop-rock. This one wouldn't leave the CD player. In a world where Paris Hilton makes pop songs, I ask why aren't these guys played on the radio?

2. Silversun Pickups Carnavas – Mix two parts Smashing Pumpkins and add a dash of Shoegaze is the recipe for my #2 album of 2006. Lazy Eye has to be the song of the year.

3. Neko Case Fox Confessor Brings the Flood – Is this country music? I don't know, but it sounds way better than modern country which sounds more and more like reheated Eagles.

4. Band Of Horses Everything All the Time – I'm not sure if there's a bad song on the entire album. It is a short album, but there's not filler.

5. Birdmonster No Midnight – A rocker that manages to incorporate harmonica and banjo seamlessly. Spaceman may be the best hard rock-to-acoustic-ballad-to-hand-clapping-hoedown-jam ever.

6. The Twilight Singers Powder Burns – It's like Greg Dulli has distilled every album he's ever done as a Afghan Whig or a Twilight Singer and crafted this super album, weeding out all the bloat and excess that sometimes overpower his songs.

7. Phoenix It's Never Been Like That – Man, more pop-rock! I think this would've even charted higher, if not for the instrumental North which is really filler and breaks the flow of the record.

8. M.Ward Post-War I'm not sure how such a great record as Post War makes number 8, figuring that everything in the top 10 are essentially ties, it makes sense. Standouts are the Neko Case backed To Go Home the Jim James backed Chinese Translation and Rollercoaster.

9. Hard-Fi Stars of CCTV They say that this Dance-Punk sound popularized by Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party is on it way out. And if Dance-Punk is on it's way out, Stars of CCTV is a great last gasp.

10. Regina Spektor Begin To Hope – Regina Spektor can be profound and silly and shocking all in the same song. Who would've thought that she likes Guns and Roses' November Rain and that the "solo's awful long."

11. Cat Power The Greatest
12. Robert Pollard From a Compound Eye and Normal Happiness
Prolific as ever, Uncle Bob manages to put out two albums in one year.
13. Jenny Lewis And The Watson Twins Rabbit Fur Coat
14. Camera Obscura Let's Get Out of This Country
15. Paul Westerburg Open Season Soundtrack
16. Lily Allen Alright, Still
17. Beck The Information
18. Tapes N Tapes The Loon
19. Gnarls Barkley St. Elsewhere
20. Sound Team Movie Monster
21. Pretty Girls Make Graves Élan Vital
22. Bishop Allen February EP and June EP
Bishop Allen did a EP record every month this year. There's a lot of good stuff on these records, but also a lot of so-so songs.
23. Viva Voce Get Your Blood Sucked Out
24. Yeah Yeah Yeahs Show Your Bones
25. Kite Flying Society Where is the Glow?

The most disappointing album of the year:
Built To Spill You In Reverse – I loved Goin Against Your Mind but man, the rest was real long and real boring.

Yeah, I've only heard of 6 of those bands, and of those I think I've heard maybe two songs.

It's amazing how many bands there are that you never hear about.

Heh. On your list, I've only heard of Phoenix, Hard-Fi, Cat Power, Lily Allen, Beck, Gnarls Barkley and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. That's the music fan's favorite pastime, right, being obscure? ;)

On your list, I would only include Cat Power and Gnarls Barkley on my "Best of 2006" list. I'll have to think about it before I post mine, though.

Considering that I haven't bought many CDs released this year, I don't even have enough to make a top ten.

That said, these are all of the 2006 albums which I've purchased:

Augie March - Moo, You Bloody Choir
The Cat Empire - Cities: The Cat Empire Project
Muse - Black Holes and Revelations
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Tenacious D - The Pick of Destiny

I actually really like all of these albums, so I guess I've been lucky.

There's so much old stuff I still need to catch up on, I don't have much to go towards the newer.

Oh, and the artists of yours that I've heard of are The Twilight Singers, Cat Power, Gnarls Barkley, Lily Allen, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beck. I quite like Lily Allen's "Knock Em' Out", but I haven't heard any other stuff.

I've heard of 20 of them. Go Team Me!

Hm, a top 25 list...so much I haven't listened to yet, and probably so much that I won't get around to listening to. I'll have to get back to you on this. Yay, something new to use as procrastination.

Like others, I don't think I bought enough new albums in 2006 to make up a Top 25 list, though I probably listened to 150 or so. Thank you, the internet.

I have heard of pretty much all of those albums, but I do not know if I would put any of them high on my list.

I have listened to so much old stuff this year its hard to find even 10 I like this year.

I did just start listening to The Cassettes and really dig it. Besides that, I guess a list would look like:

1. Old crow Medicine Show - Big Iron World
2. Chatham County Line - Speed Of the Whipporwill
3. Mutemath - Mutemath
4. RX Bandits - ...And the Battle Begun
5. The Black Keys - Magic Potion
6. Blind Melon - Live At The Palace
7. Matisyahu - Youth
8. The Black Hollies - Crimson Reflections
9. The Purrs - The Purrs
10. The Village Green - Feeling The Fall

Honorary mentions:
Embrace - This New Day
Snow Patrol - Eyes Open

And then advance stuff for next year:
Bloc Party - A Weekend In The City
The Shins - Wincing The Night Away
The Apples In Stereo - New Magnetic Wonder

I FINALLY got to see Dulli in November, and man, if that guy isn't a god. I can't wait till that collaboration with Lannegan (the Gutter Twins) comes out.

That Band of Horses album is incredible, and I completely flaked on that Westerberg score! Guess I'm off to buy it on my break.

Wasn't there another power popster doing a soundtrack? Matthew Sweet maybe?

Well, this is telling. I listen to too much music.
I think one of the reasons have so many CDs is that when a act comes through town, I usually will pick up their CD from the merchandise table. They're usually a few dollars cheaper than the record stores.
Also telling is that only Hard-Fi, Cat Power, Beck and Viva Voce were only albums I bought that I didn't download at least one mp3 off of a blog first. I swear, I buy more CDs the more mp3s I download.

Man, i missed Duili when he came through Tucson this year, due to lack of funds. I have seen him a couple times in the past, but still it sucks.

Yeah, that Band of Horses was hard to place. I listened to it non-stop for at least a month, maybe longer.

Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs did an album of covers called Under the Covers, Vol. 1

If I can get away with doing a top five instead of a top twenty-five.

1. Calexico - Garden Ruin
2. Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings The Flood
3. The Decemberists - Crane Wife
4. Bonnie "Prince" Billy - The Letting Go
5. Band of Horses - Everything All The Time

I didn't get a ton of new music this year. I have so many back catalogs to plow through, tossing more on the pile seems futile.

In no particular order -

Artic Monkeys - Whatever people say I am, Im not
Mastodon - Blood Mountain
Gnarls Barkley - St. Elsewhere
Iron Maiden - A Matter Of Life and Death
Killswith Engage - As Daylight Dies
Jay Z - Kingdom Come
DMX - Year of the Dog
Pink - Im Not Dead

From what I'v heard its not a good year for trance or neo-classical. I hope next year proves better with more hits. I've heard some good underground stuff this year but hardly any of the bands or artists have albums out.

I don't know how I forgot this:
Chris Thile - How To grow A Woman From The Ground - bluegrass done very well, including covers of The White Stripes' Dead Leaves and The Dirty Ground, and The Strokes' Heart in A Cage, along with Gillian Welch's Wayside(Back In Time). The musicianship on the album just blows me away.

This year was kind of slow in my opinion, not a lot of terrific records released. Plus being a jazz musician I buy so much older stuff it was hard for me to scrape together a list. But here is my top 10.

Chris Potter-Underground
Funky, experimental, melodic, creative, this is jazz headed in the right direction. Potter has been one of New York's greatest tenor sax players for years now, it's good to see him making great records as a bandleader.

Murs-Murray's Revenge
The West Coast is still producing great hip hop. I think Murs is second only to Doom.

Christian McBride-Live at Tonic
The baddest bass player alive releases a three-disc live album. The first disc is the best and features a live set by his band. The other two are extended jams with different guest artists including Charlie Hunter and DJ Logic.

Jason Moran-Artist in Residence
Not as focused as his trio discs, this record still features great arrangements and compositions from one of the best pianists in jazz.

Brazillian Girls-Talk to La Bomb
It's good to hear some creative dance music.

Medeski, Scofield, Martin, and Wood-Out Louder
The best Sco/MMW collaboration yet. Funky as hell.

Gnarls Barkley-St. Elsewhere

Aceyalone and RJD2-Magnificent City
Another great L.A. rapper. This record loses a little as it is obviously going for some crossover appeal.

John Mayer-Continuum
Yeah, yeah, yeah ... I dig John Mayer. Ever since he started working with his new rhythm section featuring Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan I've been in to his sound. And with guest artists like Roy Hargrove and Charlie Hunter this record has a depth you don't find in much pop/rock music anymore. Check out "In Repair" if you haven't yet.

I still want to check out Guillemots and Kasabian 2006 efforts.
And I could never get into Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan's album which is weird because I like both Belle and Sebastian and Screaming Trees.

Idlewild is a disappointment, in my opinion. I mean, it's good because it's Outkast, but it's a soulless and self-conscious record. Jay-Z is on automatic on "Kingdom Come", but he's still one hell of an MC, and he can save almost any song.

Do one up, Jonathan!
The last time I mentioned what new music I was listening I got tons of shit for it, so bring your A-game, haters.

Here are all the albums released in 2006 that I own, in no order except where they happened to be on my CD racks:

01. Bob Dylan, Modern Times
02. Lily Allen, Alright, Still
03. Gnarls Barkley, St. Elsewhere
04. James Luther Dickinson, Jungle Jim and the Voodoo Tiger
05. Regina Spektor, Begin to Hope
06. Tom Waits, Orphans: Brawler, Bawlers and Bastards
07. Demetri Martin, These Are Jokes
08. The Decemberists, The Crane Wife
09. Various Artists, Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs & Chanteys
10. Bruce Springsteen, We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions
11. Belle & Sebastian, The Life Pursuit
12. The Pipettes, We Are the Pipettes
13. Outkast, Idlewild
14. Johnny Boy, Johnny Boy
15. The Strokes, First Impressions of Earth
16. Nellie McKay, Pretty Little Head

Apparently, I only like pop music that references and/or rearranges the past, and a few heritage acts that keep on putting out the same old stuff. And the Strokes. And Demetri Martin (it's a comedy album, but there's music on it, he said weakly). Three of them have not yet been released in the US. And one of them I have not yet listened to, even though I bought it months ago.

I don't think it's fair to mention albums that I've downloaded but not paid for -- obviously I didn't think enough of them to want to own them -- so I won't.

I have to agree with what you said about both, OutKast and Jay-Z. Actually, you've probably said it better than I. For OutKast, there was something missing on some of those songs. "Soulless" never came to mind, but it really fits. And for Jay-Z of what I heard of Kingdom Come it seemed like Jay-Z was teamed up with the rapper or R&B artist du jour and made an album.

I didn't know AAC released a new record this year.

I'm going to give these two albums a try. My fingers are crossed...
if you do, let me know what you think

picked it up, and the Neko Case disc as well, I really like what I've heard so far

Both were on E-Music, so I got 'em both. I've listened to the Aceyalone/RJD2 album, and I really, really like it. Funky, and Acey's got a good flow. That's something I'm going to be listening to for a while. I haven't listened to the Chris Potter one yet, but I probably will before the weekend's out.

The last time I mentioned what new music I was listening I got tons of shit for it, so bring your A-game, haters.
Was that from Illash? I don't remember that.

Well, I sampled some of James Luther Dickinson's music. Interesting stuff. I've never heard of him before.
Belle & Sebastian's is another one that just missed the top 25 cut. Not sure I understand all the Strokes love. First Impressions sounded like the other two Strokes to me. Of course, I only listened to the whole thing once or twice.

1. Acid Mothers Gong - Live in Nagoya
Eliot, I'm gonna have to look up some of the artists mentioned here, but I have started listening to Joanna Newsom's Ys and wow, what a strange record. Just when I think that her music is something I'll not like, it gets interesting, and kinda grows on you.

I don't understand it either, really; I only got it because I liked the first two. I didn't say it was one of the best records of the year, just one of the ones I own. I've only listened to it once too.

The new Yo La Tengo and Sonic Youth records were good. Both bands have been around for a while and they are still trying new things out. The new Bonnie Prince Billy album is good too. But not much of a departure what he usually does but it's still good. I kind of dig the new Beth Orton record. Her songs are nothing spectacular but she has a grat voice and Jim O'Rourke's production works well with it. It's a good chill out record. Nothing else really wowed me this year. Then again I haven't been keeping up with new music lately outside of bands I already like.

Built To Spill You In Reverse – I loved Goin Against Your Mind but man, the rest was real long and real boring.

I have to agree. I really love these guys but their last two albulms have been disappointments. Not feeling the new Flaming Lips either. I wouldn't say they are bad records just mediocre especially for two really great bands.

It's a shame, really. The Strokes could be an interesting band if they would try something different.

Yeah, after hearing The W.A.N.D., I was really looking forward to At War With the Mystics but it was kinda a letdown.

This thread has gotten far off track. Its become more of a discussion on other posts then the individual's list.
Anyway, 25 is too many. So I'll include my top 5, in no order.

Slayer "Christ Illusion"
Witchery "Dont fear The Reaper"
Trivium "The Crusade"
Celtic Frost "Monotheist"
Shadows Fall "Fallout From The War"

I keep meaning to construct my own list, but, dammit, it's just too much work. I don't know how youzguyz do it. If I start talking about a song I like, I can't shut up. I can't write succinctly, either. I think the latter's probably the real problem...or maybe it's just laziness...or maybe I don't want to stop listening to the Talking Heads right now to review what I bought/liked this past year...or maybe I'm afraid if I start listing mine, I'll check back on some of the previous lists, find a song I haven't heard, buy it, and risk the wrath of the spouse...okay: it's DEFINTELY the latter...I think....

I really liked all of these. I saw Hot Chip and the Presets live together a few weeks ago, and Hot Chip were a bit of a disappointment, but The Presets killed it! And they played "Da Funk" in the middle of their set, so of course they're automatically awesome. :D

And all of these songs are great. I've never heard of a few of the artists on your list, but I'm definitely going to check some out. Oh, and speaking of great live shows, MSTRKFT and Justice on Halloween was basically the greatest thing I've ever seen. Ever. MSTRKFT drank through their entire set and DJed for two hours, and Justice played all their best stuff early so I didn't feel too bad about having to leave (school night!). Lots of fun.

Well, it's a bit late (since it's now 2007), but here's my list of what I thought were the best pop/rock(& a bit of r&b) records of 2006. I've listed them in the order I have them on my playlist (and I have them listed that way because I like a smooth segue from song to song). In fact, this playlist would make a great double-CD set (unless, of course, you don't like several of the songs). Anyway, here goes:

1. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Dani California"
2. Starlight Mints - "Inside of Me"
3. The Elected - "Not Going Home"
4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Gold Lion"
5. The Blood Brothers - "Laser Life"
6. TV on the Radio - "Wolf Like Me"
7. Cold War Kids - "Hang Me Up to Dry"
8. The Killers - "When You Were Young"
9. My Chemical Romance - "Welcome to the Black Parade"
10. Man Man - "Engrish Bwudd"
11. Tom Waits - "Little Drop of Poison"
12. Beirut - "Postcards from Italy"
13. Bob Dylan - "Thunder on the Mountain"
14. The Black Keys - "Have Mercy on Me"
15. Bruce Springsteen - "How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live"
16. Solomon Burke - "That's How I Got to Memphis"
17. James Luther Dickinson - "Out of Blue"
18. Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs - "Run to Me"
19. OutKast - "PJ & Rooster"
20. Belle & Sebastian - "The Blues Are Still Blue"
21. The Flaming Lips - "It Overtakes Me"
22. Prototypes - "Je Ne Te Connais Pas"
23. Malajube & Pierre Lapointe - "Montreal-40oC"
24. Teddybears - "Yours to Keep"
25. Camera Obscura - "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken"
26. Regina Spektor - "Fidelity"
27. Lily Allen - "Smile"
28. Nellie McKay - "Long and Lazy River"
29. Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins - "Rise Up with Fists!!"
30. Adam Green - "Watching Old Movies"
31. Corrine Bailey Rae - "Put Your Records On"
32. Lady Sovereign - "Love Me or Hate Me"
33. Lupe Fiasco featuring Gemini & Sarah Green - "He Say She Say"
34. Gnarls Barkley - "Crazy"
35. John Legend - "Save Room"
36. The Subdudes - "No Vacancy"
37. Los Lobos - "Hold On"
38. Ben Harper - "Reason to Mourn"
39. Robyn Hitchcock - "N.Y. Doll"
40. M. Ward - "Requiem"

I wanted to take the time to add a comment or two about each one, but I'm afraid I'd never finish this post...or either I wouldn't get any sleep tonight.

I just got it a few days ago but Peter Bjorn and John's "Writers Block" is easily in my top 5 of 2005. What a great record.

I picked up Regian Spektor, Neko Case, and the latest TV on the Radio because of this thread and I dig them all.

Her version of "Wayfaring Stranger" is haunting and powerful, and her vocals on the New Pornographer's "Letter from an Occupant" are wonderful, too.

Yeah, I love this time of year because of the best of list that fly around. I discover more music this time of year...thanks to 'best of' lists, I've been listening to Josh Ritter, The Hold Steady, Essex Green, and Amy Winehouse.

Stellar show all around.

I've totally lost track of music since moving in June. This is all I picked up that iTunes says is 2006:

Arctic Monkeys -- Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not
Beck - The Information
Grandaddy - Just Like the Fambly Cat
The Killers - Sam's Town
Sondre Lerche and the Faces Down Quartet - Duper Sessions
TV on the Radio - Return to Cookie Mountain
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones

I also have to admit I haven't really actively listened to any of them enough to put them in order. I almost always just do Shuffle.

I did get Rabbit Fur Coat. And love it. Itunes just says that's 2005.

Looking forward to the new Arcade Fire album in March.

I really like Calexico and didn't know they had a new one so I'll try to remember that until payday. Edit: And the new Starlight Mints. Yay!

You might like Twin Cinema, their latest. It was certainly one of my favorites from 2005.
