At least to me, and in my opinion, Wolfmother and Army Of Anyone.

I saw another thread where Wolfmother was ho-hum to some. I think this is one of the best debuts in quite awhile. Definitely old school hard rock-sounding (Sabbath, Maiden, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Motorhead). I even sense a little early Pink Floyd in a couple of the songs. I find this album impressive considering the age of the kids, showing that youth hasn't quite forgotten the good, old hard rock groups of lore. The lyrics are perhaps "goofy" to some, but I actually find them refreshing to some of the lyrical crap that gets put out again and again and again. I also thought the singer sounded like The White Stripes at first, but I think that's just more in-line with what a hard rock Australian singer is going to sound like with the "down under" accent.

Army Of Anyone is the brothers from Stone Temple Pilots -- one of the most under-appreciated rock bands ever -- and the singer and drummer from Filter. Don't like this one quite as much as Wolfmother, but it's a solid buy for $10 (Target is where I got it). I'm not a huge Richard Patrick fan, but I like this body of work from him versus the Filter stuff. As usual, the DeLeo brothers are solid, and the drumming on the album is stellar. I would have preferred Eric Krentz (sp?) from STP sticking with the DeLeo brothers, but Ray Luzier is a comparable replacement.

Agree or disagree with these choices? Any other hard rock bands to note as of late?

My only problem with Wolfmother was that I got bored with their album very quickly. Like, after listening to it twice. There are some good songs in there, but I can listen to my favorite albums over and over. Hell, I once spent an entire week listening to Iron Maiden's Somewhere in Time while I was working.

Army of Anyone was on the radio here about a month and a half ago. They played a couple of songs, but nothing that made me want to get their CD. You can download their performances here, though, if you like them. (http://www.roverradio.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=category&sectionid=8&id=19&Itemid=69)

I'm trying to think of a new hard rock band that has struck my fancy lately.

Oh I know, Red Lotus did a five song EP called De Pinche Nada. Really good stuff. Howyadoin raved about it after I pointed out their myspace page when I did a review. (Which got posted on the band's press page on their site by the way).

Hm. I haven't heard of this band before, but the combination of musicians has me interested. Might have to check it out.

And although it's not new, I'd definitely recommend Silvertide's Show and Tell.

What else can I hype up here? How about a trio of Vancouver indie bands:

Catapult (http://www.catapultmusic.com), Sonic City (http://www.soniccityband.com), and Damsel Fly (http://www.damsel-fly.com).
