The only limit is that the writer has to have a significant run on an Iceman book. So say Claremont(14 issues) or Carey(6 issues) who are great writers but have only written a handful of issues won't be up for discussion.
Stan Lee X-men 1-19 - Created Bobby Drake, developed his powers a bit.
Roy Thomas X-men 20-44, 55-66 Spent almost three years writing the character and did his origin
John Byrne X-men 281-285 X-men the Hidden Years Wrote the return of Iceman during the relaunch and followed up years later with the Hidden Years stories of the earliest X-men's exploits.
Scott Lobdell UXM 287-349 X-men 46-69 The longest run by far developed his new powers had him break up with Opal.
Chuck Austen UXM 410-443 XM 157-164 After almost five years of little to no Iceman action brought Bobby back in the foreground
Louise Simonson X-factor 5-64 took over the relaunch in X-factor, gave him his most popular girl friend Opal
Mark Millar Ultimate X-men 1-33 reimagined Iceman
Peter Gillis Defenders 131-160 wrote him into another team and told some of the classic Iceman stories of the 80's.
I thought Scott Lobdell did a nice job with Bobby. And wasn't Joe Casey's favorite X-Man, Iceman? Actually I wasn't all that wowed by Casey's Drake but gotta feel the love. ;)

The only time I ever really enjoyed Iceman was under Joe Casey, and he isn't even an option. WTF? ;)

That would be Louise Simonson. Stan Lee (his creator), Roy Thomas and John Byrne all did well, too. Haven't read the stuff by Gills yet, but it's on my list of books to get.

Scott Lobdell.
He gave Iceman some really nice character moments, such as when he had a hole in his chest and didn't know if he'd survive de-icing. I also loved that issue where his bigoted father gets assaulted by Creed's goons. That was a wonderful issue. And who can forget Iceman's role in OTZ. He only liked single-handely saved the world from Bastian while wearing a speedo. 'Nuff said.

He actually turns into ice? I thought he just coated himself in it a la Amazing Friends transition. When was this established?

Ooohhhhh, don't quote me on this. I definitely know nothing about the science behind Bobby's powers. You could be right. I just remember him being afraid to power-down for fear of part of his chest being missing. But I do think his body turns into ice. I mean, we've seen him evaporate and come back in a mist for or whatever Carey recently did with his powers.
DDM would know this one I think.

i believe the first time bobby turned completely into ice was uncanny x-men 292. mikhail rasputin was actually responsible for the initial transformation.

That just shows that Iceman was turned into ice by Mikhail, which isn't surprising given the man's power. He was turned into water shortly thereafter. How did he revert and keep the full-ice effect?

I think it was more of Mikhail showing Bobby what he was capable of. He does turn totally into "organic ice" now and has for some time. He was even stuck in ice form due to Austen's secondary mutation until Milligan fixed that.

Joe Casey and Stan/Jack runs are the only time I found the character interesting. (I haven't read a huge amount of X-Men comics, though)

Louise Simonson, followed closely by Scott Pobdell. They're the only 2 writers that seemed to be really interested in trying new ideas and approaches to the character.

I have to go with Louise Simonson since she did a great job with Bobby in X-Factor, but I really love the way Jeff Parker is writing Bobby in First Class.

I love the Louise Simonson issues of X-Factor. Apparently I missed out on the better Lobdell issues- it sounds like some good stuff went on. I haven't read enough of Chuck Austen's run, but I have a feeling that might be my second favorite since I enjoyed a lot of the other characters he wrote. Humor was his strong point, and that would have worked well with Bobby.
