This storyline took place in Avengers #386-389, well over ten years ago. When I was compiling the Red Skull write-ups for the Top 50 Avengers Foes, I read the issue summaries at Jay's Comic Book Compendium (http://www.geocities.com/jshayer/comics/avg_390.htm). Frankly, I couldn't remember the issue and the summaries confused the heck out of me. What was the point of this story? What did it have to do with the Avengers? The Red Skull? A.I.M? The Cosmic Cube?

Does anyone remember? And was it supposed to originally be an Avengers/Captain America crossover?

I think it was a Grue CAPTAIN AMERICA storyline that somehow the Avengers book got drawn into. I was only reading AVENGERS at the time, and I remember being completely lost when I skipped over the CAP parts of the storyline (#440-441). The whole thing was just full-bore incomprehensible.

I'm guessing one book had higher sales and Marvel was trying to boost the other, but I could be completely off base.
