View Full Version : The best/worst television commercials

Best
*Any Burger King commercial with The King. Does it speak poorly of me or the state of TV comedy that the Burger King makes me laugh hysterically? The recent spots for The King's videogames are great, especially the one where he jumps his dirtbike and eats it on the landing. As The King lies amidst the wreckage, he gives us a thumbs up indicating everything's OK, with that dumbass grin firmly affixed to his oversized plastic head.
*"I'm a PC..." ads, if only because John Hodgmen's in them.
Worst
*The ad for some navigation system where the guy gets lost and a choir sings about what he's doing. That I can't remember the product name despite 5 or 6 viewings speaks of the ad's failings.
*Citibank's series of "very, very rewarding!" spots with Victor and that other (Russian?) dude. They tried to come up with an absurdist ad campaign, but failed miserably by creating the stupidest 30 seconds on TV. I never want to use a Citibank card in my life just so I can spite them for this.
*Mercury's (or is it Lincoln?) new holiday ads. Two neighbors come out and see a new car with a giant bow sitting between their homes. The neighbors take turns acting like snobbish pricks by suggesting the car is for them. The spot concludes with one neighbor saying something like "somebody's got to clean the garage" and the other smugly responding "well somebody already did." At this point you’re hoping a deranged heroin addict beats both of them with a lead pipe, steals the Mercury, and crashes it into a brick wall.

Burger King commercials with The King suck ass. I cringe whenever I see that stupid-looking costume. I also hate McDonald's trying to be "hip" commercials.
I like the new Geico "Caveman" commercials. Much more than the overdone gecko with a faux Madonna accent.

*"I'm a PC..." ads, if only because John Hodgmen's in them.
Sorry, but I have to disagree there. It may be because I'm a PC user, but I find those ads a bit immature and silly.. "Hi, I'm a PC and I'm a workaholic geek who needs to be put together and is vulnerable to hackers and viruses, while Mac here likes to have fun making movies and creative stuff, is ready to run right out of the box and has nothing to fear from viruses!"
Funny how those ads never mention how the PC, unlike the Mac, is upgradable and runs far more games then the Mac, or that the Mac isn't invulnerable to viruses so much as no hacker cares enough about Macs to make viruses for them...

We certainly don't have the same taste in commercials. I have hated everything Burger King has done for the last few years. The King, the dancing ingredients, the Whopper family, the cheesy guy....I don't like any of them.
I do agree with you on the CitiBank Victor ones. I don't like them either.
I do like the cavemen.
I like most of the ones Bud Light comes up with (odd, since I hate beer), especially the Magic Fridge.
I'll post more as I think of them.

I find it funny because a Mac IS a PC.
PC = Personal Computer.
A Mac is a personal computer. It's just a different brand name of PC.
Gateway, Macintosh, Dell - all are brands of PCs.
Heck, you can't even say "Winbox" anymore since Macs can now boot up Windows operating systems.

I really liked this phone commercial a couple months back where there were two guys in a gym locker room. ONe guy goes "my phone has this and this and this" and the other guy goes "mine has that too!" Until the first guy says "my phone has theft protection." The other says "oh yeah?" And he goes "yeah, try to steal my phone." And when he does, he chucks his phone at him. Hilarity!
And the Dennys commercials with the two folks in the car are always fun.

Apple's actually discontinuing the "Mac guy vs. PC guy" ads because basically, John Hodgman is too good as the PC guy and audiences liked him better than the Mac guy. According to Wikipedia, both actors are Mac users, funnily enough.
The Geico caveman commercials are always great
Huh... Couldn't disagree more. The first one was moderately amusing and they've been beating a dead horse since then.

Oh, that commercial is sooooo well done!
FYI: The name of the song is "Mad World" by Gary Jules. It's a remake of a Tears for Fears song, I believe.
EDIT: I was wondering how long it'd take for this thread to be moved here.

i love the pepto bismol commercial with the giants, i ALWAYS laugh when the song goes "upset stomach diarrhea" and it shows the paul bunyon looking guy holding his ass. Alarm clock catastrophe and the snickers commercial with the guy and his guitar are also great ones to me.
and the burger king "Maybe i DO wanna be a french fry" commercial, is another great one"

That PS3 commercial with the weird baby doll really freaks me out. Why would they make a commercial like that? It's effin' scary!
Anyhow, my fav commercial right now has to be the Amp'd Mobile one where the Asian guy washes his hands in the bathroom and sings that rap song. His reaction to the other guy walking in is hilarious! That totally happens to me sometimes too.

Are you talking about the commercials with Dr Z? I hate him.
And the BK King commercial freak me out. I'm waiting for the King to start stabbing people with sharpen BK Chicken Fries.
Put me down as another person who thinks the Geiko Caveman commercial are getting old.
That Mercury (or whatever) holiday commercial feels like a joke that you never get to see the punchline for.

Hodgman's become a semi-regular on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, as the resident 'tech expert'. One ep a few months back, Jon managed to coerce Hodgman into saying, "I'm a PC" which got the audience cheering.
I'm actually partial to the current Go Phone ad that essentially redubbed "A Christmas Story".
"You'll run the bill up."
"Oh no! It's the classic parents' cell-phone block!"
Anyone remember a Diet Coke ad with two people watching Casablanca in an old theater and lip-synching the lines? That was cute.

I recently watched/enjoyed the old Discovery Channel commercial on YouTube, with the guys in the meteor (asteroid?) costumes dangling on a string.
It's the deliberate bad acting that cracks me up, along with the ending where they enter the Earth's atmosphere shouting : "Ahhh! The atmosphere! The atmosphere!"
There's another version with the same guys in mosquito costumes too. Hilarious!:p

Creeps me out, too! Not to mention, why are they advertising something that they've run out of?!
Thought of another series I like:
The new Volkswagon commercials where it's just two people in the car talking and then *BAM!* they get nailed by another car. I find them very powerful, as they are much more realistic, and therefore impactful, than the standard reel of crash-test-dummies running into a wall.
Whoever came up with it should get a raise.

I love the Fed Ex commercial where the office his having a meeting and they say that now they can ship Fed Ex to China and the boss tells Jim (?) to put a pin in China on the map. "That's Iceland Jim", and the guy gets all paniced because he can't find China. The boss says, "Do even know where China is?" and the guy Jim "accidently" falls on the map and rips it off the wall. Makes me bust out every time i see it.

I used to be freaked out by the "Wake Up With The King" BK commercials, but As they've continued, I've found the humor in them.
The Caveman Geico commercials. . . .PRICELESS!
I can't stand the Virgin Mobile commercials. They're just. . . .odd!

The best: Any commercial I can fast-forward through on my dvr.
The worst: A tie between any car insurance or cell-phone commercial. How often do people really switch car insurance? Also, it's just a phone, people. It didn't fall from space, and nobody really cares what phone you have.

I was talking to my g/f the other night about a new trend in TV ads. Several bloggers have pointed out the "Stupid Man" stereotype which has been going on in commercials for quite a few years. However, we seem to have a new contender for overused character type. I've notice a LOT of commercials now feature "Bitchy Woman" as the main character.
Also, I watch Match Game on GSN all the time and they run the same ads all the time and the one question I have from those it this: "Are there really that many people out there that have to use catheters?". I swear, almost every commercial break there is an ad for that.

My current favorite is that cell phone commercial-- I think it's for Droid 4G, which probably tells you how effective the commercial is-- where the man and woman are sitting down talking about their relationship. She's all concerned that he never listens to her, and he's cheering "Yes!" because he's watching highlights on his phone. "What am I some kind of summoner who can pull these things out of the air?" Then he cheers again.

Me too. Particularly the "Jake from State Farm" ads. Dear sweet zombie Abraham Lincoln, how did this man get a driver's license? And what insurance company would give him a policy anyways?
Other commercials I hate:
"Mayhem" commercials for Allstate. Why don't they just have the guy come on screen and say "BOOGAH BOOGAH BOOGAH! Buy our insurance or your car will explode!"
Those "Feeling Richer" commercials for Android. Those commercials don't make me want an android mobile. They make me want to stay far away from those phones, cause they make you stupid.
Now, for something completely different: A commercial I like.
Those Flo ads for Progressive. She's just so happy and excited about doing her job, it's infectious. And the commercials are actually entertaining, particularly the "Chipmunk family reunion dream" one. Just so... out there.

One that makes me want to do physical harm to all my senses just to avoid it is Boston Pizza's Wing Critique by Carl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StWFp86IkFY&feature=related)
Honorable mention goes to Valerie Bertinelli shilling for Cindy Crawford shilling for Dr. Jean-Louis Sabagh's "Meaningful Beauty" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Owji16tge0). Sounds like they're following trends made popular by lowbrow sitcoms.
My current favorite is that cell phone commercial-- I think it's for Droid 4G, which probably tells you how effective the commercial is-- where the man and woman are sitting down talking about their relationship. They have one with two women eating lunch and one with two dorks tailgating. You just wants to grab all there phones and smash them and watch those asshats cry.
I like some of the side characters, though, like the guy who violates company policy and the guy wondering how to post videos to Facebook.

I guess since they're aware so many people get annoyed with their commercials, they feel like they should use that (but they'd have to split the difference and still keep the repetitive phrase).
[font=Palatino Linotype][color=navy][size=3]One of my faves at the moment is Frank's RedHot ("I put that $#!+ on everything!" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdqwWo13pyw&feature=relmfu)), makes me laugh every time.
I liked those at first, but then it got to be ridiculous and Ethel started putting Frank's RedHot on things that sound DISGUSTING.

PSYCHOLOGY LESSON BITCHES:
So, the reason why these companies make commercials with these "memorably annoying" characters is due to a condition where after a little while you only have the "memorable" part of the commercial in your head.
You start to forget what was so annoying about the product which in turn means you're only left with the product on your mind and what's on your mind leads to better impulse purchases.
So yeah, they make them annoying on purpose.

Woohoo!! He's back! Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!
That adorable little piglet that cried weeeeeee all the way wherever. "Pure adrenaline."
Really tired of the T-Mobile commercials with the girl in the pink dress. The Christmas one was the final straw. They made "4G Wonderland" sound like "orgy wonderland." But really... her just standing around, talking is boring. No wonder T-Mobile is going under.
And I don't like the Progressive commercials with that redneck guy that travels around. Thank Flo for Flo!
And yeah, Transient Guest, I get that. But I tend not to buy from companies whose commercials I find annoying. I will purposely avoid their products. Might be a reason why I don't own an Apple anything. Speaking of which, those T-Mobile commercials remind me of the old, extremely annoying Mac/PC commercials.

Is there a person alive who hasn't heard or been aware of that "psychology lesson"? It's practically a staple of every negative commercial/ad discussion, somebody has to be the "Yeah, but you remember it, right? They win" guy.

Um.....nope. Not everyone has.
Hell in the class where it mentioned to me you'd think it was the missing ingredient in that immortality elixir.
My bad for sharing a little something that a few people knew.
FFS we've all already seen these commercials so why are we mentioning things that others already know?
OH. Wait.
Discussion board.
Grats on knowing stuff I know though, makes you smart.

Oh good, that was the last item on my bucket list. Looking forward to your "DARTH VADER IS LUKE'S FATHER, BITCHES" post in the next Star Wars thread to pop up.
It's a thread where people are mentioning what they think are some of the best and worst commercials, there was no request to go any deeper than that nor did anyone ask or seem flabbergasted as to the nature of bad commercials. I find it hard to believe that your "lesson" is as scarcely known as you're saying it is, I've heard it so many times that it's practically a cliché.

How many freakin' mascots does Geico need? The lizard, the cavemen, the money with eyes, the pig, guy in a suit. Either it should all lead up to a mega crossover superbowl commercial, of they should drop a couple.

A good one is for a new cell phone that plays songs on it. It has 2 cool hip dudes jamming The Clash: Rock The Cashbah but singing Rock the Catwalk.
Kinda similar, I loved this ad using Rocketman.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWy-LCGDsd8
Although until just now I thought it was an ad for Sirius radio, not a car.
And, for the record, I thought it was "Burning out his room up here alone."

I hate hate hate HATE those maudlin SPCA, WSPCA, WWF, etc. commercials with the shots of sad animals backed by depressing songs.
They don't make me want to give money, they make me want to club a baby seal with a sack of kittens just to SPITE those organizations.

Well, one guy recently took a psychology 101 class, and then learned something very basic and obvious that he didn't realize most people already know...then he got mad when someone pointed out that he was late joining the party.

Diversity. Not to mention all of the one-shot failures:
- "Smaller bill" duck
- That DAMN SQUIRREL that causes an accident! F'IN SQUIRRELS! KILL EM!
- The dog that laughs when his owner paid too much for car insurance.
and many others...
And for a while they were using celebs, like Charo, Little Richard, Peter Graves, etc.
I hate those dog/cat commercials too, but only because they make me want to adopt all those pets and love them to pieces... then I realize that I can't. Bastards. Makes me want to club the people responsible for their mistreatment.

As someone thats not a fan of animal cruelty I respect those commercials for not acting so smug like the Anti-Smoking commercials but I hate the fact that those ASPCA commercials had to drag on and on. It is almost like a analogy of someone talking slowly to a simple minded person just so he could finally understand what the person is saying. Those commercials last ten times longer than your standard commercials. Now I do despise the WWF for what they did with the Coke cans

Its a thread where you say a commercial is good or bad, the only arguement that should come up from this is
"That commercial isn't good."
Or
"That commercial isn't bad."

There have been some running on the Action network lately that have been bothering me because of their cheesiness, but it's kind of hard to stay bothered when that's sort of the point. It's for their movies, they have someone trying to imitate the typical voiceover for action trailers, and they say stuff like (for District 9) "In the immortal words of Phil Collins; It's no fun...being an illegal alien!", or (for 16 Blocks) "A federally protected witness and a burnt out cop get into a car. Cop asks the witness 'You ready?' The witness says...'Mos def'." (Get it? Because Mos Def is in the movie! Hyuk-yuk!)

Well what can I say, what's common for one is rare for another and if you think that is bad I was so flabbergasted by my classmates in Social Psychology that I made a list of things they asked / said in class because it's just......
Real Example: If a child loses their virginity to one of their parents can that have a negative effect on the child?
Trust me, it get's far, far worse.
But I can see you haven't ever read any of my posts. If there was a Star Wars thread there is actually a decent chance I'd post something like that just because I'm........if you listen to some of the other boards I'm an insane easily targeted scapegoat. I personally like to think I live up to all those titles.
And while it's not asked to go into their nature it's still a discussion forum. And I was discussioning the nature of bad nature commercials in a topic on a forum that is about bad commercials.
Btw, this?
Well y'see, Luke was in lightsaber duel with Darth Vader, had his hand chopped off, and was hanging off of a piece of cloud city machinery on Bespin...

Are there any good commercials on TV nowadays? I can't think of any. There was a car commercial from a few years back that I liked: all the cars in some random city had been replaced with hundreds of people running with lights in their hands.
As for worst...I've been watching a Power Rangers marathon on NickToons and every commercial break seems to have this sappy McDonalds commercial where some guy's singing about wanting to be an apple tree or somesuch while an owl brings Happy Meals to her hatchlings. Why such a moody, depressing song would make me want to go to McDonalds is beyond me.
Another one I hate is those stupid Cinnamon Toast Crunch commercials when the squares keep eating one another.
