View Full Version : Anybody seen Donner's superman II?(no spoilers)

I haven't yet, but I was curious what people thought.
No spoilers please, just general impression.

See, the problem with no spoilers on this is that there's only so much difference between the Donner cut and the theatrical cut, and you can only really talk about the new one in relation to the old. You almost have to include spoilers.

I bought this on tuesday and finally got a chance to watch it. I felt that it was about the same as the original cut, at least in terms of quality, but with less of the hokiness. I think that it works alright until the very end, which just seems so unsatifying. In my opinion the ending to the original cut works better with the whole Superman-Superman 2-Superman Returns continuity, though certain elements of this one work better too. Overall, its only worth it if you really like Superman.

Since I really hated the uneven tone in the theatrical version of Superman II, I really enjoyed the Donner Cut--I think it's superior to the theatrical version. Without spoilers, not much else can be said, but it's thrilling to see Marlon Brando again as Jor-El (and that's been widely reported, so it's not a spoiler). The Donner/Mankiewicz commentary is just as enjoyable as their commentary from Superman: The Movie. Highly recommended!

I only had two problems with it. The final scene makes no sense given the end of the movie, and kinda makes Superman look like a dick due to this. Not like, marry Jimmy to a gorilla level dickery, but still.

The other problem was taking out what I felt was one of the best lines in the movie. "General Zod, would you care to step outside?"

God, yes! That disappointed the hell out of me. And the line they replaced it with was corny even for Superman.
