Apologies if this is off-topic. :)

I had a bunch of cool Pokemon cards when I was younger...a holographic Charizard, a non-holo Articuno, a Gengar, and a Mew, among other cool things. Then I gave them all to a friend. :o

Another thing I remember about them when I was younger is that I was terrified of the Rocket Pokemon, like 'Dark Charizard' or 'Dark Hypno'. They scared me because I knew that Pokemon shouldn't be evil and stuff.

Plus some of the images were scary, like the Dark Charizard, if I recall correctly, was setting everything on fire.

Anyone else have memories of Pokemon cards?

'Cause he was probably way too old to buy Pokémon cards when they were popular. Now, if this thread would've been "Transformers Comic Memories" it'd be a different story. :p

Kids today are getting old too fast
they can't wait to grow up, so they can get some ass
They get nostalgic 'bout the last ten years
before the last ten years have passed.

From the song "Bastard".

I was working for some old guy and he paid me years ago with cash and handed me a card. Seems his kids didn't care and it was in a special box to view it. The old guy told me his grand kids didn't care it and when I finished his yard he handed me it.

I kept it in my truck the longest time and would look at it. The card was gold and it was a Pokemon. I didn't care for it and forgot about it. Til one day my young cousins were in my truck and asked if they could keep the card so I let em take it.

Fast forward a few months and I'm down south passing thru and stop into a comic and card shop. I'm looking around and inside a case is an exact card that I had gave away. It was gold and in a case. I told the shop owner and he looked at me: " You still have it ? I'll give you $ 50.00 for it. " as I tried to explain I had gave it away he upped it to $ 60.00 .

So thats how I blew $ 60 bucks because I thought the card was a piece of crap.

Ditto. I still have them somewhere, in storage most likely.

I have a holographic Jolteon which I still remember getting, cause it was the only holo rare card I ever got in a booster pack. Stupid things.

They were stickers. You could put 'em wherever you wanted.

Art Spiegelman came up with the idea for the cards themselves.

Putting them on lunchboxes was the brainchild of children who bought them in the 1980s.

Well you are only 23. And you don't appear to be in the U.S. Unless your bio is wrong. :D

Anyhow, Garbage Pail Kids were popular in the mid 1980s in the U.S., mostly because they looked like deranged Cabbage Patch Kids.

I wasn't allowed to have any.

My son got into Pokemon in a fairly big way for a time. No idea what he did with the cards. All I know is, I was glad when he moved on to better games, because POKEMON sucked.

I still have my M:TG cards. I have piles of spudge cards - crappy commons and extra land cards - that I use as bookmarks.

The cards could be used to play a game. It was meant to serve as sort of the juvenile version of MAGIC: THE GATHERING, in addition to feeding on collector frenzy.

The problem is, it was a really shitty game.

MAGIC isn't a particularly juvenile game at all. It's a lot more complex than the likes of POKEMON.

I eventually became completely disenchanted with the game because of the marketing aspects of it, but as a piece of basic game design, it's pretty good.

In comparison, POKEMON featured simple rules and was designed for kids. Nothing wrong with that. It's good to have kid games. The problem is, POKEMAN was a sucky game.

Just funnin' ya, Jeff.

That's cool. A lot of people dismissed MAGIC as juvenile, just because kids got into it as well as adults. That was stupid. There are lots of legit reasons to dismiss MAGIC, but it being juvenile wasn't one of them.

It being a huge ol' money sink and an example of sacrificing a good game design to rampant greed... *those* are good reasons.

Way back in 2000, I worked in a games store for a few months. I had to learn various different collectible card games in order to run demos to anyone who wanted to learn about them.

That included Pokemon, so I had to have my own deck and know how to play.

On the other hand, I did also get to play Magic: the Gathering, Legend of the Five Rings, 7th Sea, MLB showdown, That WWF game and other games.

However, I've long since tossed my cards. That stuff is almost like a drug in how addictive it is. I was broke in college from Magic alone.

Are you talking the card game or the video game? Because the video game will draw blood, sweat and tears, especially on the levels where you can't take one bloody step forward without a random Wild Pokemon attacking you.

Yeah, it does get incredibly warped and nasty after a second's thought.

It also undermines the character's opposition to Team Rocket - "They're evil for trying to steal and abuse the creatures that we abduct and make fight each other for our personal profit!" It's like the mafia complaining that the yakuza are meanies.

I had Overpower and Pokemon cards. I still have the Pokemon cards in a shoebox on my shelf. I didn't mind the game, personally. But then, I'm a freak in regards to Pokemon-- mostly due to the wackiness of Team Rocket.

I stopped collecting the cards because they're way too expensive and I know of no one else who plays the bloody game. I played the game twice-- once against my five year old (at the time) cousin and once against a friend who was humoring my insanity.

Overpower was indeed quite sucktacular though. I just was happy to have some of my favorite characters.
