I've been in a Superman mood lately (I've recently enjoyed both the Donner cut of Superman 2, the novel It's Superman and a few of the comics) and I started thinking about how cool it would be if DC were to launch a series of OGNS/ mini series with the adventures of a Golden Age Superman with modern storytelling sensibilities. This was inspired by some comments Erik Larsen made about characters like Superman belonging the most to the time in which they were created.

Superman: Gold
The story would be about 200 pages, either as an OGN, or a The Golden Age type mini series. It follows a Superman who emerges in the late 30s. It differs from the Earth 2/ Golden Age Superman in that it can use elements from later Superman stories (Bizarro, Jonathan & Martha Kent, Mxyptlk, Zod, Brainiac, Doomsday, Jor-el, etc.) One rule is that it's written in a modern decompressed/ cinematic style (maintaining the pre-World War 2 setting/ sense of wonder), so the writer makes no efforts to emulate a Golden age style.
If the first storyline is a hit, there may be sequels, although the series would have a definite end eventually (unlike the "actual" comics.)

So the big questions.
Could something like this be successful?
How could it be done>
What creators would you put on it?

James Robinson writes & Paul Smith draws: the same team from the excellent-why-haven't-they-retconned-this-to-have-officially-happened mini-series The Golden Age.

Some good choices, although it seems Alan Moore is currently unavailable.

I'd add as possible creators........(and I'm realizing several of these guys are currently working on current Superman stories.)
Tom Dehaven- Already wrote about a Pre-World War 2 Superman in the excellent novel It's Superman.
Geoff Johns- Has written about both Superman, and the Golden Age well. And he's one of the best current Superman writers.
Kurt Busiek- Has written excellent Superman tales, and Golden Age tales (see the first issue of Marvels.) Also a master of the 200 page mini series.
Carlos Pacheco- Great Superman artist, but also good at drawing other time periods/ settings (see Arrowsmith)
Tim Sale- Fantastic artist. Has drawn Superman beautifully before, and seems able to capture the spirit of an earlier time.
Mark Bagley- Great modern artist, and he has said he'd like to work on Superman, to which Joe Q quipped "I can make that happen."

George Perez
Alan Davis

Writer: Roy Thomas

Artist: Jerry Ordway

They've both handled a version of Superman (Earth-2) through much of the 1980's (though teamed with many other heroes), and I think they'd do a wonderful job on a Golden-Age-type Superman.
