It's a little unclear to me what happened at the end of the Breakout arc. Who was the mystery figure talking to Yelena Belova? Is this still a loose end or was this resolved later? I haven't read a good chunk of New Avengers from about #11-20. Can someone clue me in?

I believe Bendis stated that these question would be resolved in New Avengers following Civil War. The Avengers will split into two teams, the Mighty Avengers to fight major powerhouse threats and the New Avengers to deal with shady espionage and underworld elements.

Having not been mentioned in some time, it will crop up either as an afterthought or out of the blue as a major arc (knowing Bendis the latter), and Bendis will claim he planned this all along.

The guy talking to Yelena at the end was the guy associated with Hydra and AIM who also gave orders to Spider-Woman when she was a double agent. I forget his name, but him and Yelena came back in the annual when she became the new Super Adaptoid.

But... he has!

He's even said it will reappear repeatedly... so I think there's some planning going on.

I can see in some future issue someone will mention that they never finished finding out what SHIELD was doing in the Savage Land.

Just did a quick search, his name is Conelly. IIRC, he has appeared in GS Spider-Woman 1, New Avengers 14-15 (And off panel in 3 or so), New Avengers Annual and New Avengers 23.

Ahhhh, the refreshing bitter taste of a plot that never went anywhere.

I agree. He's mentioned it enough to times for me to conclude there's more to the story. it's just that Civil War has understandably shaken up whatever long term plans he had for the team.

He could have concluded it or moved on, but he's still talking about it. He goes out of his way to remind people that there's still a story there that he will continue. And he's said it all along.

I think people are just less patient with Bendis style of storytelling because he writes things in the long term. Unlike some writer, he doesn't really have to worry about not being on the book 6 months from now. I imagine he'll be on the Avengers as long as he wants, so he can plan storylines that take years to finish.
