SLC CITY LIBRARY FEATURED IN ARCHIE COMICS
__________________________________________________ _____________________
Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, and Chuck pay a visit to the
Main Library in issue #570 of Archie Comics. The issue will be released
on October 4, 2006, with a cover that proclaims, "In This Issue: Archie
Visits the World Famous Salt Lake City Library!" Inside, a short
vignette by veteran comic writer George Gladir follows Archie's group as
they visit the library for a report to the fictitious Riverdale Town
Council on ways they can improve their own library. During their visit,
Mimi Cruz, manager of Night Flight Comics, gives the gang a tour of the
library, meeting Director Nancy Tessman and other staff in the process.
The artwork features a fantastic interpretation of the Main Library,
showing how Archie and his friends are impressed by its architecture.
They visit Level 2's young adult Canteena and ride the glass elevators
up to the top of the building. They also discover the retail tenants,
including Joy's Deli (much to Jughead's delight) and Night Flight Comics.
George Gladir visits the Main Library for the annual Literary Luminaries
event on December 2, 2006. He will present a workshop for teens about
graphic novels and the comic book industry, and will deliver an informal
lecture with an autograph signing.
The Main Library's appearance in Archie Comics comes in a banner year
for both the library and Night Flight Comics. In May, the Salt Lake City
Public Library System was awarded Library of the Year 2006 by Thomson
Gale and Library Journal. Last summer, Night Flight Comics received the
2005 Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retail Award, naming the store as
one of the best comics shops in the world. In 2007, Night Flight
celebrates its 20th anniversary in Salt Lake City.
