View Full Version : Crossovers on the TV

I love crossovers!

When the characters from a tv series appear in another series like Law &Order meets Homicide: Life on the Streets?

Which shows have pulled this neat trick and how many crossovers have you come across?

My favorite is Munch, originally appearing in Homicide: Life on the Streets, has been on something like 7 or 8 series (latest being Arrested Development).

I thought it was pretty funny when Ray Barone (Everybody Loe Raynond) showed up in The King of Queens to cause some hijinks there.

Arnold and Willis from Diff'rent Strokes showing up on Facts of Life after Charlotte Rae's character gets her own series.

Jill Hennessy and Jerry O'Connell coming over from Crossing Jordan with their characters to Las Vegas for a couple eps. With some of the guys from Las Vegas going over to Crossing Jordan as well.

CSI:LV crossed with CSI:MIAMI for a 2-parter and MIAMI did the same for CSI:NY.

The first one that I thought of when seeing this thread title was the Law and Order crossover with Homicide.

Do spinoffs count? Like when Cheers characters showed up on Frasier? Or does there need to be a story linking two ongoing shows, with each show getting an episode? Melrose Place was a spin-off from Beverly Hills 90210, and a couple of characters crossed over between the two shows for the first couple of episodes of Melrose Place.

Buffy and Angel obviously had crossovers. The Millenium storyline was clumsily wrapped up on the X-Files. Wasn't there a crossover between the Fox X-Men animated series and the Fox Spider-man animated series in the mid-90's?

One crossover that never happened that I would have liked to have seen: Mulder and Scully investigate a mysterious series of decapitations, causing the X-Files to cross over with the Highlander tv show.

Mad About You and Friends crossed over all the time. Mad About You also crossed over with Seinfeld.

Really? When did Mad About you cross over with Seinfeld? and Friends for that matter? Sounds pretty cool.

yeah there were a few episodes with Xmen on Spiderman, which was good to see Wolverine and Spidey argue and exchange insults

Lisa Kudrow had the recurring role of Ursula, a flakey waitress, on Mad About You when she was hired to play Phoebe on Friends. Since Ursula only appeared in about one scene per episode Lisa Kudrow continued playing Ursula. Eventually it was revealed that Ursula and Phoebe where twin sisters and Ursula started appearing on Friends. There was also at least one occasion where Jamie went to Central Perk.

In one episode of Mad About You Jamie discovered that Paul was subletting his bachelor apartment. Angry about it she forces him to sign over the lease to the current tenant who turns out to be Kramer.

I used to be a big fan of Las Vegas until NBC switched it to Fridays, so now I can't really watch it all that much. But when I did manage to catch an episode, what tickled me was this one dinner scene with pretty much the entire cast and their significant others, and Jerry O'Connell (as Sam's date) was there at the table, too. It was also the dinner that Delinda announced that she was engaged, so having O'Connell there to witness and be a part of it was an extra-special treat.

I don't think those would qualify as crossovers since CSI: Miami wasn't airing yet when they appeared on CSI, and ditto for CSI:NY and Miami. They were just set-ups for the upcoming premieres.

I was also anticipating a CSI: Los Angeles after Brass had to head over there to bail his daughter out of trouble. The episode seemed to be a big set-up for a new series.

Yeah, I'm not too sure if spinoffs should count in this thread. But if they do, hell, the TOS/DS9 Crossover is the king of all spinoff-crossovers.

I have an old one. The Green Hornet and Kato guest starred on a two parter on the '60's Batman series. The crossover really annoyed many of the Green Hornet fans since the Green Hornet was always treated seriously, and to have the Hornet and Kato on a camp series was rather jarring.

And in the episode, Burt Ward and Bruce Lee both refused to lose a fight between Robin and Kato, so they ended the fight with a standoff, and when Gothams finest arrived, the Hornet and Kato ran for it, since they were supposed to be criminals, even though they were really heros.

Burt Ward must've had some brass balls... Lee should have agreed to do the job, then "accidentally" knocked him out in the first take.

One of my favorite crossover jokes was when the doctor from Picket Fences went to Chicago Hope, and while arguing with the staff about treatment options there she says "maybe this isn't the best hospital in the country! Maybe it isn't even the best hospital in Chicago. More people go to that other one, what's it called?"
"We never mention the other one."

This probably doesn't count, but on several occasions, aspiring models from The Search for America's Next Top Model have made cameo appearances on other UPN/CW programs, though not playing themselves. This always happened when a model won an acting competition within the overall modelling competition. At least two Top Model contestants have appeared on Veronica Mars, for example.

Uncle Jesse and Michelle from Full House showed up in Hangin with Mr.Cooper once.

i dont know for sure of any examples but my girlfriend told me that all my children and one life to live cross over sometimes. they often mention the name of the towns on each show.

I saw Las Vegas a while ago and at some stage I caught a glimpse of the two lead actors from Invisible Man on a table playing poker or something.

I donīt know if this qualifies since I didnīt catch the dialogue, so I dunno if they were in-character but it was funny seeing there.

Oh! There was a South Park episode where Mr. Garrison seeks help from Dr. Katz.

There was also a team-up episode of Johnny Bravo and the Scooby Doo gang, which pretty much was a parody of all the Scooby Doo crossovers from the 70s.

A live-action Beavis and Butthead made multiple appearances on Step By Step too. They were a very B&B convincing imo.

Belzer has, canon wise, appeared in the following shows:

The character has spanned over 14 years and 17 seasons. Along with 122 episodes of Homicide and 158+ episodes of SVU, Munch has also appeared as a character in eight episodes of six other series:

Law & Order - 4 episodes: "Charm City (Part 1)", "Baby, It's You", "Sideshow" and "Entitled (Part 2)".
The X-Files - 1 episode: "Unusual Suspects"
The Beat - 1 episode: "They Say It's Your Birthday"
Law & Order: Trial by Jury - 1 episode: "Skeleton (Part 2)"
Arrested Development - 1 episode: "Exit Strategy" (Belzer also appeared in episode "S.O.B.s", but as himself.)
Sesame Street - 1 episode: "Law & Order: Special Letters Unit" (He appeared as a Muppet version of the character, still named Munch.)
The character is also slated to appear in an episode of a new, yet to be titled French equivalent of Law & Order: SVU.
Munch also appeared in the 2000 made-for-TV-movie Homicide: Life Everlasting.
Munch's appearance on Sesame Street, which aired August 14, 2006, made him the only fictional character played by a single actor to appear on eight different television shows. These shows were on four different networks: NBC (Homicide: Life on the Street, the Law & Order shows), FOX (The X-Files, Arrested Development), UPN (The Beat), and PBS (Sesame Street).

John Munch is one of the most prolific characters on television; his appearances on so many different TV series is a record in television. Some fans believe that, via his Homicide appearances, the Law & Order/Homicide universe becomes part of the Tommy Westphall universe (named for a character on the show St. Elsewhere), although the connection already existed because of the appearance of Dr. Roxanne Turner (played by Alfre Woodard) as a regular character on St. Elsewhere and as a guest appearance on Homicide.

Oh, speaking of Law & Order, but surprisingly not involving Munch, the recurring psychiatrists Dr. Olivet and Dr. Skoda popped up a few times in New York Undercover, as the show was also by Dick Wolf.

Take that, Det. Tutola :)

Lea Thompson had a show called Caroline in the City. Back when it was on, she cameoed as her character in an episode of Friends. Chandler and Joey try to hit on her while taking care of Ross' son and she thinks they're a gay couple who adapted.

I could have sworn Angela Lansbury's character on Murder She Wrote guest-starred on Magnum PI once.

In addition to their appearance in a two-part episode, Green Hornet and Kato also did a cameo in one of Batman's window sequences.

The character of Dr Lewis in ER once interacted with characters from Third Watch after her sister and niece went missing in New York. The story started in ER then continued in Third Watch.

X-Files was going to do a cross-over with Picket Fences.

Then something halted it unfortunately (TV networks couldn't come to an agreement I think). But if you watch the two episodes, you can see where the writers had to backpedal to fix the hole in the plot where the cross-over should have been.

You are correct sir. Jessica Fletcher did met Thomas Magnum in an episode. Also the characters from Simon & Simon met with Magnum as well.

Wasn't there some promotional thing NBC did during the 90s where all the Thursday shows revolved a blackout in NYC? I remember that Friends and Mad About You had this, I forgot the 2 others were but I distinctly remember this.

Madman of the People with Dabney Coleman was the third one. The fourth show on that night was Seinfeld but they refused to actually tie in with the crossover. I think I remember reading that Paul Reiser was pissed that Sienfeld didn't participate.

I remember a crossover between Simon and Simon and Wiz Kids.

Another one that comes to mind was that The Practice crossed over with Alley McBeal even though it was on another network. It also crossed over with Boston Public. Ironically, IIRC Ally McBeal and Boston Public never crossed over despite being on the same network.

Oh another one that comes to mind is that Larry, Darryl and Darryl from Newhart appeared on the final episode of Coach.

One of the teachers was on trial for something, or was suing someone or something like that. They hired the laywers from The Practice to represent them. Here let me look it up.

Okay did a quick google search. The school coach on Boston Public got fired for not coming forward when he found out that one of the teachers was having an affair with a student. The Coach hired two of the lawyers from The Practice to sue the school for firing him.

The used to be a really cool website that kept track of all these various crossovers and which groupings of shows existed within a shared universe due to these crossovers.

Sadly, it seems to be gone since I can't find it, but there've been a ton of corssovers that've been just brief little mentions or blink and miss 'm cameos that were all counted and it was cool to see how many shows were connected to each other by various crossovers.

IIRC, the Picket Fences episode (which dealt with cattle mutiliations or something like that) did include a mention of the FBI having recently investigated a similar case in a nearby town. The X-Files episode had aired first.
