I had this conversation with my sketch book group the other night, and we decided that the subject of horror movies itself was too general. Thus we broke it up into subgenres.
What is your favorite horror movie? (by genre)
1. slasher flick or horror movie heavy (ie a flick with a single badguy, like Jason, Freddy, Leatherface etc)
2. zombie flick
3. pure gore, blood and guts
4. monster flick
5. sci-fi
6. torture
7. Comedic
my list goes thusly:
1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
2. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
3. Saw (all)
4. The Thing (1982)
5. Aliens
6. Wolf Creek tie with the Hills Have Eyes (2006)
7. Dead Alive

What the heck, I'll play along.
Slasher - Halloween
Zombie - Night of the Living Dead (Original)
Gore - Day of the Dead (Seriously, that movie takes evisceration to a level of art.)
Monster - Jaws
Sci-Fi - The Thing
Torture - Audition
Comedic - Tie between Evil Dead II and Big Trouble in Little China
