I saw this in an ad somewhere and have been looking for it ever since.
Unfortunately, the only comic-book shop in town is actually mostly a game shop (two-thirds of building space is Magic/Warhammer players) which has a fully stocked Civil War section but falls flat when it comes to keeping things in stock.

Wow. I don't really know The Spirit, but this was just fantastic.
Fun, funny, clever, and it really moved along. This is the sort of thing that Jeph Loeb excels at. Good ol' popcorn fun.
And, seriously, I'd buy ANYTHING that Darwyn Cooke draws. Anything. This book was perfectly suited to his style and skills.
I cannot wait for The Spirit now.

Diana, I know we disagree on a lot of books, but if you liked this, trust me when I say you will love the collected reprints of Eisner's original The Spirit series. I don't know how the writing chores were split between Jeph and Darwyn, but it certainly had a lot of Cooke's flavor in it, so I'm eagely awaiting the ongoing he'll be doing. This book was fantastic, well worth the five bucks, and the best book I picked up this week.

Yeah, I'm sure I would I love it. The only Eisner I've read is parts of The Contract With God books. And those are amazing (actually reminded me a good deal of Kieslowski's "Decalogue" in some ways).
But aren't those archives like $6,000,000 per book? :) And my Border's doesn't have them to Byrne-steal (though, is it still Byrne-stealing if it's done at Border's? ... interesting ethical question).
Seriously, I was saying to a friend of mine that if Marvel packaged Civil War as the Marvel equivalent of an Absolute Edition, charged $100, but had Darwyn Cooke go back and re-draw the whole series, I'd buy it.
And I think Civil War is the stupidest thing ever.
So, when I say that I would buy anything Darwyn Cooke, I really, REALLY mean it. :)
Anyhow, someday I will get those Eisner editions, and I'm all over the Cooke The Spirit when it comes out.

If you want a taste of the Spirit, there is a Best of the Spirit tpb for $14.95. Cheap paper quality, but some genuinely cool stories, showing the history of the Spirit and many examples of Eisner's innovative story telling style(The Story of Rat-Tat the Toy Machine-Gun was told like a children's book, for example). Best buy of the year for classic comic fans.

This was maybe my favorite thing I have read all year.
I want Cooke to do a Brave and the Bold series and tackle a new hero every month. *drool* I could look at that art all day.
O...and the writing was ok too...y'know...Loeb...he's KINDA talented :p

Thank you for that little "jk" emoticon on the end there.
Because, I agree, the writing was simply awesome.
That panel, with Octopus holding up the drink and grinning?
I want that poster-sized. :)
