Okay, I'm a little late to finally getting around to kinda sorta discovering them. Now the thing is I avoided them for the longest time due to Danzig. Can't stand the guy.

For the longest time, I thought the song "American Psycho" was by GWAR (long story, I'm not that familiar with GWAR either though). I finally broke down a while ago and acquired the album American Psycho, and then Famous Monsters followed soon after. I like Michael Graves, and I love both albums. Now I need more.

I've been tempted to backtrack a bit on their earlier material, but there's that whole Glen Danzig thing. Anyone able to compare Danzig Misfits and Graves Misfits? And/or anyone able to recommend anything else in the vein of the Michael Graves era Misfits?

I wouldn't be able to fulfill your request on the last one since I'm not familiar with Michael Graves-era Misfits and have no desire to try them after hearing about how awful they are. Though Danzig-era Misfits is some of the most gloriously fun early American hardcore out there. Early-Damned taken to its logical conclusion with catchy melodies buried under the relentless speed. And I doubt Graves' could pull out anything nearly as catchy as "Last Caress." Their first album is Walk Among Us and can recommend that though I have yet to hear their others ("Last Caress" is on the Static Age compilation though).

I too am mostly unfamiliar with Graves-era Misfits, and I'm willing to bet it's quite unable to trump Danzig-fits. That said, Project 1950 is a fun covers album of 50's rock and roll and is worth a listen.

Just enjoy the Danzig Misfits and forget your distaste for the man.

I wouldn't say that Grave's stuff is all that different from the earlier Danzig Stuff. What don't you like about Danzig, you mean the band, or him himself? He had another band called Samhian, although I haven't heard it, it's meant to be Black Metal.

I hate to be the one to go all scene, but early AFI, Avenged Sevenfold and My Chemical Romance have bits of the Misfits in them. I'd suggest Aiden, but they are basically Misfits - Skill - Originality + Zombie fans = Popularity.

At either side of the melodic hardcore exteme is Queen adreena and Black Flag, respectively.

Wednesday 13 is probably your best bet at getting a modern take on their sound, at least as a far as I know. But it's not quite as good, not bad, but the Misfits are above the not bad level, so everything else just sounds like drool.

I'd say out of everything mentioned get AFI's 'best of' from their time at epitaph records, it's misfits-lite which is very very good.

Personally I think Famous Monsters is the best album they've done, its like Elvis on steroids, which is pure gold.;)

The early misfits are an essential listen if your a fan of punk rock in any way. They are like the menacing B-movie horror version of the Ramones. Glen Danzig might have his personality quirks, but this music comes from a time when he was spot on what makes great melodic punk. The Static Age and Walk Among Us albums are the misfits finest moments.

The Mikael Graves era albums suffer from only one flaw. They cannot touch the feeling and sound of the original Misfits. Otherwise they are catchy ass tunes. Graves is no Danzig, good or bad, but he knows how to write great songs.

The current version of the Misfits concists of only one original member Jerry Only on bass and vocals, Dez Cadena from Black Flag on Guitar and Robo on drums who was an early drummer for the Misfits and did a stint with Black Flag. Marky Ramone was the drummer for a couple of years before Robo. This group put out a covers album and a lounge song version of classic Misfits songs. I wouldn't touch either of those albums with a ten foot pole. They are a good live band but not a great live band. Evidence of bootlegs from old Misfits show tends to be they were never a great live performers.

Finally for those who liked the Mikael Graves era songs, he is now a solo artist. I've seen him twice and he puts on a great show. His new songs are more personal and less about cheesy horror movies. He has two albums ,Punk Rock Is Dead and Return To Earth. They are well worth checking out.

Great non-biased info by Generic Eric.

Its really hard to talk about Graves-era Misfits without it turning into a debate about which version of the band was better, so I applaud Generic Eric for his reply to the original question.

Thanks. I'd hate for a discussion about the Misfits to devolve once again into which musicians are assholes or what is the most legitamite version of an overall great band.

Neat. Thanks for the replies.

That’s what I was looking for, really. Just to get an idea if it was a similar sound. Got enough recommendations, I’ll get Walk Among Us and Static Age when I can.

What don't you like about Danzig, you mean the band, or him himself?

I don't know the guy, but I haven't heard much positive stuff about him. I don’t like the band Danzig, not my thing. I’ve also heard some Samhain and wasn’t impressed either. Sounds like he'll get a pass though for the Misfits. :D

I have some early AFI, the All Hallows EP, and the self titled one. I have the Murderdolls album, kind of forgot about Wednesday 13. I still think he sounds like Sebastian Bach sometimes. I’ll look into Hallowmas. I’m getting Graves’s solo stuff as soon as I can get around to it. I have no idea if it's similar at all, but anyone familiar with Nekromantix? Any good?

Yeah, what I've heard is good, but I've only heard their stuff on Hellcat compilation CD's, so I couldn't recomend an album. They're are basically to the Misfits what Megadeth were to Metallica, soundwise. I can't get into to much detail, because - as said - I've only heard a handful of their songs. Same with the Horror Pops too.

Also, I just remembered about Tsunami Bomb and Tiger Army, who IMO sound dead on tee with the Misfits, although not dealing with the same lyrical subjects like B-Horror movies from the 50's, the melodic chorus and groovy/punk riffs are there.

I can see a lot of The Misfits in MCR.

About every punk band that is either dark or spooky seems to have mad love for the Misfits. Living in So Cal it's petty much a given that if you go to a punk show you'll hear at least one Misfits cover song that night.:D
