Even though Lord of the Rings cleaned up on Academy Award nominations and awards, let's face it...
The acting was just "ok." Maybe better than "ok", but not amazing.
Which actor did the best job acting? Not only in acting, but in portraying their character the best?
If anyone says Frodo....

Ian McKellan, Ian Holm and Sean Bean all turned in excellent performances.

I think Ian McKellan as Gandalf was the most believable if not the best performance.

Ian McLellan should have won some award IMHO.
Always thought playing sci-fi and fantasy characters (exspecially ones who aren';t human, like Gandalf) were more difficult then dramas (who *always* get awarded by the Academy).

Ian McKellan, Ian Holm, Christopher Lee, Brad Dourif, Andy Serkis, and Sean Bean. :)

Ian McKellan was the perfect Gandalf.
Andy Serkis deserved some sort of award for his performace as Gollum (stupid Academy)
I'm also partial to Viggo Mortensen's portrayal of Aragon, especially in the begining when he's more like Strider the Ranger than the heir of the throne of Gondor.
And I enjoyed the vocal performance of John Rhys Davies as Treebeard.

Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Brendan Hill as Theoden, Christopher Lee as Saruman, Brad Dourif as Grima Wormtongue.

McKellan, obviously. Bernard Hill as Theoden in ROTK, though I didn't like him in Two Towers. Miranda Otto the same - loved her in ROTK, thought she was dull in Two Towers. Ian Holm was excellent, as always, in his small part.
Sean Astin and Viggo Mortensen were both good at times and not at others. It's kind of the nature of the script and the book it's based on, I suppose.

McKellan was the best, bar none. Also very good were: Sean Bean, Ian Holm, Sean Astin, Bernard Hill, Brad Dourif and Andy Serkis.
Worst is a tie between Orlando and Viggo.
All those I didn't name did okay. Weren't great, weren't bad.
These are only my opinions and should be treated as such.

Ian McKellen was the outstanding actor, of course. He's easily one of the five or six best living actors in film, worldwide.
Andy Serkis was incredible. So were Sean Bean and Bernard Hill.
Surprisingly, Frodo was one of Elijah Wood's weakest performances.

I absolutely agree that the acting was just ok.
Which is why I'll go for the "pleasant to look at" criteria and vote for...

Miranda Otto.
Oh, and Frodo, obviously. He's just dreamy...

Christopher Lee did the best job as far as making his character come to life damn near exactly as I imagined him to be goes. McKellen was good, too, but he didn't quite define Gandalf for me.

Yeah, but Lee could do that role in his sleep. Overly dramatic evil dude is default mode for him.
Which I guess is the thing that holds back most fantasy/sf movies, they don't often call for the subtle approach. At least not the kind like LOTR.
Has John Rhys Davies ever under acted?

Agreed, the acting was alright I guess. I mean, it got the job done. No one stood head and shoulders above anyone else though Elijah Wood's Frodo was pretty annoying.
Unable to pick out the best actor/actress I will however attempt to pick out the most gorgeous.
Which is of course none other than the stunning Cate Blanchett.

Eh, she did a decent enough job, but it's bad casting. Blanchett doesn't have an elfin quality in the least. Galadriel is supposed to be one of the most beautiful creatures in Middle-Earth, deceptively delicate looking.
Cate's got her appeal, but she's a lumbering Mack truck compared to the concept of Galadriel. Don't know who I would pick, but it would be someone a lot more feminine that has a lot less "bulbous" facial features. Physically, Otto comes closer, and she's still far short of the mark.

I thought for a novice, Peter Jackson had a nice death scene.

I thought Bernard Hall did a superlative job as King Théoden. Any Serkin, Sean Bean and Ian McKellen also shone. While Lee turned in a workmanlike performance, I did not view his work as exceptional in any way. The others were merely so-so.

As a whole, they were excellent. Kudos to Peter Jackson for going with no-name actors instead of the big-name actors who the studio might've wanted for BO appeal (Vin Diesel as Aragorn, anyone?)
One of the weak spots for me was Viggo as Aragorn, but I think the blame goes more to Peter Jackson and the writers than anyone else. Viggo didn't seem to have a strong grasp on the character of Aragorn - he kicked ass from Bree to Rivendell, which was a good thing. But when they start talking about exile and his not wanting to reclaim the throne a little off-putting. His conflicted character seemed much more similar to Boromir than Aragorn in the novel. He was good, and thank God they went with him over Stuart Towensend. But not quite in line with the Aragorn from the novel.

I didn't like the portrayal of Theoden much, probably because it wasn't at all how I imagined him from the books. He's should be someone who's been driven not to evil, but to madness. And it shouldn't have been so blatant from the start.
I thought Bernard Hill was worthy of an a supporting Oscar nod in Two Towers, and Sean Bean was just as worthy as McKellen for Fellowship. Nobody really impressed me to that degree in ROTK. I don't get all the hatin' on Viggo, i thought he did a solid job throughout the trilogy. The Hobbits were "meh" for me. Too much time crying, and gazing...oh so much gazing.
Kate Blanchette is a great actress, but that was some bizarro casting. She is *not* so staggeringly beautiful that it would plausibly melt the heart of a surly elfa-phobic dwarf.
