View Full Version : CBRdraws: SUPERMAN

CBRdraws is simple, we pick a character from comics, games, cartoons, whatever, and then people post their own drawings of that character.

It never closes, so its not like you have to do a drawing by the end of the week, but if you want a challenge each week to draw something you didn't expect to, it might be a good excercise.

No level of skill required, this is just for fun. It can be a splash page or part of a story. It can be penicils, inks, colors, paint, photography... really anything goes.

This week its Superman!

Maybe, I did see it not too long ago.( Seems like he has been saving people from air disasters since I became aware of superman though.) I liked the movie (except for the Lois Lane actress! She sucked paddy water!) but I would say it was a bit of an hommage to the 1977 Richard Donner film, and therefore hardly original. I started with Superman, and then went searching for background. Trying to go for a challenging perspective shot, and then trying to frame it with a sense of urgency. Originaly the missle was behind him but it looked like he had missed it. So I moved it in front.

Fantastic! I love these CBRdraws threads! Some great stuff has been coming out of you guys!

Of the stuff in this thread so far, I love CE_Rap's second drawing...I love that graphic, big hands look. And Rik Levin's drawing has such a classic, solid feel to it. If I didn't know any better, I would swear it was a panel from a Dan Jurgens book. Or maybe early Byrne? (take it as a huge compliment...the man may have gone insane recently, but he's still an amazing artist!) And David Bovey, I've already told you that you are amazing. GOD, those lines of yours are just amazing. Hell, there really isn't a bad Superman in the bunch. (Master of Puppets, please be sure and finish that! I love where it's going!)

So, here's my first attempt. I did it today during a meeting at work. I was going for "regal" and instead got "arrogant" I'll have to try again later, I guess.

Also, is it just me, or does everybody go through periods where they just can't seem to draw if it isn't on lined paper?! Everything I do that's not on a legal pad has been $h!+ recently!!!

I think you could easily move from arrogant to regal by tweaking the eyebrow placement and shape of mouth.

I have to agree, I'll have to try going back the drawing board, and sketching it out again, but with a cleaner line. I did not really get the pesrpective the way I wanted to, regarding his anatomy. Thank's again for your comment's.

Yes, it was an homage to Richard Donner's film. Something that I totally endorsed and loved. I loved the movie. And when I say that I loved it, is because I LOVED it. :D

*Great* work. And I agree with Smitty. If you make Big Blue look towards the horizon you'll get the look you're after.

As for the lined paper, those periods are usually when I'm in class (trying to get an Industrial Engineering Master degree :D:D). This period was particularly BOOOOORIIIING.

Dude, this is some serious stuff. Simply jaw-dropping stuff. I like very much the first one. Very dynamic, and I liked the shading and the pose.

EDIT: the pecs look a bit off, though. Other than that, and you're ready to make some serious money from this.

Ha! Yes, I was totally talking about SmittyX's drawing. My bad.

Smitty, hate to say it, but cleaning up the drawing HAS lost some of what made it so good...those kinetic lines really added urgency and movement to it.

Also (and this is a bit of a nit-pick) but the fact that Superman isn't looking at the missile makes it feel like he's just flying along side of it. Like it's his buddy. Maybe if there was a before and after pic...where you could see him panic about the missile being fired, your pic would show him zooming past it, and the next pic would show him intercepting it...that would make a bit more sense. But stand-alone, it looks too much like he's not even paying attention to the missile, but to something beyond it. Maybe have him looking at it? Or even shrink him and put him BEHIND the missile a bit more?

TroyCarlson

I haven't drawn on lined paper since elementary school. I don't think I even own any at the moment.

I have legal pads at work, and I bring them to meetings to take notes. And, of course, during meetings I doodle. These doodles are never meant to be anything more than a sketch, or maybe a study of a picture that I want to finish...but they always seem to be better than what I draw when I sit down with the intention of producing something "serious".

The answer is obvious...I just gotta stop brining lined paper to meetings! :p

Well, my Supeman started off as a white guy, but after coloring him, I think I accidently turned him into a black guy. Oh well. I've always wanted to draw a black version of Superman. I really like this one. It's got such a personality to it. Those Kansas roots really come across.
And Caio... I like that better than all your CBIdol work. Great dog.
Chizel Man, that's a bit closer to his tough guy roots than usual modern depictions. Not a Superman you play pranks on.

Here was my entry for Project Rooftop's (tencentticker.com/projectrooftop (http://www.tencentticker.com/projectrooftop))contest to redesign Superman. Didn't even get an honorable mention! D'oh! (But I'm not bitter, not even tho many of the finalists/honorable mentions included elements that I used as well. No, not bitter at all.) :)

Yeah, some of the ones at project rooftop were BS. Like, Evil Mullet Man that got top of the page?! What the hell? or I'm covered in jagged crystals man....

Other than that though, I really like Kyle's, it got second place. I think Ming's was simply too busy. The third place one was real clean, though. And I liked the one where Supes was shirtless, with the fabric hanging from his waist, very "what if Superman decided to enlighten himself by living in India" vibe.

When I re-read my post just now, it sounds more bitter than I really am. Darn the internet! I gotta remember them smileys.

In any case, I knew that I would get points dinged off for not having my Superman "approachable." It's a weird design requirement in that Supes has to be 1) an alien 2) a paragon of heroics and 3) an everyday-Smallville kind of guy. I don't think that any of the designers really captured that as the holy grail of designs, but many came pretty close.

Some of those I actually applauded, because even though they didn't look like Superman, at least the artists had the balls to make a real departure from the traditional suit. For example, the concept behind the one made of crystals is brilliant, I think . Although it looked kinda "feathery" like one of the judges said.

I like the cape idea a lot. I also like the gauntlets and the belt. I'm not as sure about the boots. It's the cuffs on the boots that kinda throw me a little bit. But overall it's a fun design and really brings across the "Sun God" subtext of Superman well.

Short answer: yes. Long answer: I was trying to reason out how other people looked at Superman-- not just the people of the DC universe but how we readers/creators see his role. Why do we read/write/draw Superman in the first place? My answer, He is the forefather of a modern-day mythology, an inspiration and hope that absolute power can be absolutely what we need in a hero. It's like Prometheus. And yet there is still some kind of otherworldliness about him. So I kept some mythological elements like the cape-toga and gladiator-ish boots, but added some surreal elements like the pinstriped section and oddly S-shaped gauntlets. No mask or gloves, because that would be a deal-breaker in a Superman costume, to me. Finally, I created a pose and used a more painterly style to raise the modern-myth vibe.

I have started painting in acrylics, and the subject matter I find most interesting is comic books... I am horrible at drawing so I trace from reference and paint from there... I am more of a colorist than a painter, but it is only a hobby and I am trying to get better at it.

Here is my first... a superman painting. It is a study of a piece done by Ed Mcguiness...

First I draw (well trace) it in....

Skip ahead a few steps....

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v238/diceshooter/SANY0222.jpg

And this is with the background... this picture was done when it still needed touchups, but the painting is all cleaned up and framed now...

Exactly. Superman represents a modern take of the mythologies of old, I believe, when looked from certain POV. I also agree on the no-mask approach. Now that I think about it, he doesn't use a mask so we can trust in him a little bit more.
