I know that this is already up on the X-Board, but I think it really has business here too.

Dave Cockrum has died (http://www.nightscrawlers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=6539)

It was his art on the Legion that first got me into the book and his X-Men completly redefined the superhero team for the modern era.

This is a great loss for the comic community.

Terrible news. he will be missed.
His Nightcrawler mini from 1985 is one of the best comics I ever read.

The comic's world sucks just a little more.

He wasn't even 70.

The hell?

This is not an appropriate time for humor, but nevertheless, I will say that in addition to his wonderful work in comic books, Mr. Cockrum gave comic fans endless joy through the abuse of his surname in sophomoric jokes.

For both those things, he will be missed.

Has any artist contributed as much to "Bronze Age" comics as Dave Cockrum? His work on Legion of Super-Heroes and Uncanny X-Men reinvigorated superhero comics and brought in a whole new generation of readers. His work will live on.

Can't get the article to load, but wow...

I think any classic X-Men fan has to respect just what a priceless contributor Cockrum was to the medium.

Dave Cockrum has passed away

November 26, 2006

With a heavy heart, I regret to inform you that Dave Cockrum passed away this morning. After a long battle with diabetics and its varied complications, Dave died in his sleep early this morning.

Dave’s many creations—including some of the X-Men’s staple characters—brought tremendous joy to his legion of fans. For three decades, he was a beloved fixture at comics conventions across the country where he would sketch for a pittance and encourage would-be creators. Those of us who knew Dave personally will remember him as one of the sweetest, jovial, most generous individuals in the comics industry. I’ll miss my friend very much.

There are no details of services at this time. Dave asked to be cremated and his widow Paty is burdened with the news, so well wishers are asked not to call. Email can be sent to magnetorampant@yahoo.com

I copied this for those who couldn't get the link to work. It was the firs thing I saw, when I logged onto DC's Legion board today. Such sad news. I knew he was ill, and I guess it shouldn't be a shock; but it is.

newsarama also has the story up

they mention Marvel paying him retroactively in 2004 for his work designing the new x-men. Nice to hear they did the right thing.

He'll be missed, he was a real revolutionary who did a lot to create the bronze age.

Just terribly, terribly sad news.

I'd seen the article in "Wizard" a few years ago, alerting the community to the dire straits Mr. Cockrum was in.

A great creator.
