Stinks something fierce.
The graphics look about 10 years out of date.
The controls are iffy.
The voice acting is wretched.
Aside from a fanboy thrill at the beginning as you start to get the hang of your powers during the meteor shower, this game is a waste of time.

Y'know what game was awesome? Superman for the N64. I'm gonna' rent this one, just for the fun of it (I love open-world action games, especially comic book ones like this and the Spider-Man 2 game), but I doubt it's worth buying. Games based on DC characters are notoriously crappy.

Aww damn. The adverts in the back of the comics made it look like so much effort was put into it that it couldn't go wrong. And the fact that it was delayed made me think it'd be even better as more time was spent on it. this is such a shame. I still wan to play it to experience myself but my free LoveFilm trial ends in a week and I wasn't going to carry it on so I'm not sure what to do.
Oh, I was really looking forward to this too.
What else is wrong with it [Bored..[/b]? Is there anything more specific you can say?

It seems to have the classic problem all super hero games have. Y gets repettitive and doesn't have much story. So I've heard. I just got it today but I'll find out tommorrow when I play it. I'm not expecting a killer out of this world game but I at least hope it's fun to play a pass the time.

I'm finding it a lot of fun so far. Most of the difficulties I've had have to do with the controls, but those go away the more I play.

I'm liking the game so far. I only wish there was little more to do in Metroplois though. There's not enough variety of enemies/tasks to keep things fresh.
Then again I'm still not too far into the story.

From what I've heard thats the way it's going to stay the rest of the game.
I pray to gaming gods that that won't be the case. But they have been known to ignore my requests. -Looks at Batman Begins game...shivers-

Eh, way I see it, most games just let you beat the storyline and then it's over. If you can have some fun flying (or swinging, in Spider-Man 2's case) around after beating the game, that's all icing.

I finished reading the review over at Gamespot and it sounds like crap. Doing all those side missions and earn nothing for completing them? Why bother? Also, completing 25% within one hour of play? How short is this piece of crap?
Jack Zodiac
11-25-2006, 10:19 PM
As short as most of the comic-to-movie-to-game transitions. The first Spider-Man movie game took all of five hours to beat, and Spider-Man 2 was even shorter than that, but in Spider-Man 2, you could waste your time being a hero in a free roam New York, which I'm betting is what's going to occupy most people's time with this game. That's why I wanna' check it out.

According to the Gamespot review, city missions involve saving kittens and fighting tornados. That some crappy side missions.

I dunno , the trailer makes it pretty cool.
Nowadays , most free roaming superhero games are repetitive once you play around with it , but the enjoyment of webslinging or flying or jumping is still cool to play with. If this was strictly just based on the movie , it would be hell of a boring game as the movie doesn't have much action. But the game has mongul , bizarro , metallo etc so i will try it out. :)

To be fair, I haven't played the game past the Mongul mission, so I can't speak for the entire game. All I can say is that I have very little interest in playing the game again after what I've seen thus far. Maybe when I've got some spare time, I'll give it another chance to wow me.
If you're a Superman fan, I would recommend renting it at least. The first meteor mission was kinda fun and breaking the sound barrier is very cool.

I bought it and I am REALLY enjoying it. I bought the game so I could be Superman. I don't want to sit at a computer for 8 hours as clark kent, I do that at my day job. I spend my life as Clark Kent. I never get to be Superman. This game gives me that.
I swear, it seems like people just get on the internet and give their opinions because they're misreable and want to make other people misreable too.

Got around to finally playing it. It wasn't really what I expected. It's not that I didn't like it, I guess I just expected something else from what was being advertised and I guess my own ideas on how the game would be.
My biggest deal is with the controls mostly. They're not as smooth as I was hoping they'd be. And I was hoping to have a more interactive enviorment, kinda like Hulk: Ultimate Destruction where you can pick anything up and toss it or hit with it.
I would have liked more villan and sub-mission variety, not just fighting robots and putting out fires. The beggining meteor shower is fun to deal with, but it seems you only get to do it once. It could have been added as a reocurring event and maybe more natural disasters, maybe a tsunami or something. Also it would have been interesting to have several things happen at once, just to spice things up. Like say some horrible weather thats causing tornados and tsunamis.
Now, don't get me wrong I like the game, I've ben waithing months to play it. It's fun and it's a good game to pass the time. The city is huge and I enjoy flying around chasing baddies at top speed. These are only a few things I feel could have helped give it a bit more variety. The difference between a good game and a really good game are the details, you know the little things. Stuff thats under the surface so that after you get past the big things in the game there is still something left to keep you interested, some depth if you know what I mean.
It's a nice game considering it's both a comic and movie game which both have bad gaming fame. I say rent it before you buy just in case.
And I hope there will be a new and improved sequel in later years. :D

I swear, it seems like people just get on the internet and give their opinions because they're misreable and want to make other people misreable too.
Or, they don't simply like something and want to let people know. I can understand being bummed that people aren't enjoying something you like, but to assume that they're doing so to make you miserable is pretty ridiculous.
Granted, if the same people are still bitching and moaning about the same thing weeks and months and years afterwards, you'd have a point. But, in this instance, I think people are just ticked off that the game isn't up to snuff.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance is hella cool. Also Spider-Man 2 if you haven't played it yet.
As far as that goes I don't really know of any superhero games to avoid. Most are not up to snuff anyways. The rest I can't really account for since I haven't played 'em.

Superman Returns is THE best free-roaming superhero game out. Period. The way they IMPLEMENTED Superman is flawless. You feel like you are Superman. The world is not matched by any other superhero game. And please don't tell me that Spiderman's world comes close to Metropolis.
Repetitive enemies aside (yes, that's the biggest flaw of this game as well as other free-roaming games), I think they did an excellent job recapturing the the city, and Superman himself. If there is one superhero game that is a true button-masher, it's MUA and the Xmen Legends games. While they have great story, good characterization, and lots of replay value. That replay value is still nothing more than mashing buttons at a fast rate. And you still don't feel like you are the hero like in Superman.
This game has been unfairly judged from the beginning. Yes, it's short as hell. Yes, they should've given you more to fight other than robots and dragons during the free-roam mode, and yes, the story could've been better. But in all, it's a better start than the first Spiderman game.

Okay, just finished the game. Yes, it is an appallingly short game with very little to do beyond fight the same half dozen bad guys.
Some parts are wonderfully done, but there's so much that feels unfinished and unpolished that the whole thing feels like a wasted opportunity. A massive city with so little to do in it just feels wrong to me.
Suggestions for the sequel:
1) Let him fly up into the upper atmosphere at least once.
2) The combat system needs a little refining.
3) The "smart" camera is anything but.
4) More variety in just about everything. Missions, villains, costumes, etc.
5) More Bizarro.
6) A story that's actually interesting.
7) Zod. Kneel Before Him.

I agree; these games are really just for fanboys like me, who get a kick out of just flying and swinging around.
As for good superhero games; Spiderman2, Wolverines Revenge, Justice League Heroes, and Hulk Ultimate Destruction are all great. I haven't played Marvel Alliance yet, but it looks good. I seem to remember Punisher being fun. Superman Rise of Apocolypse is a bit of a kids game, but I liked it fine. Also Marvel vs. the Imperfects didn't impress me too much playing alone, but a friend and I recently played vs. mode and REALLY enjoyed it.

I'm probably going to get yelled at for this but...The Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is probably the best single character comic book based game in recent history. It's kinda-sorta-almost freeroam. You really get to feel like the Hulk jumping around and being chased by choppers and jets, you get to whirl tanks around and toss it at others use cars as boxing gloves and it has really nice special moves and combos. It's a surprisingly good game. In fact the biggest set back is that you end up wanting more places to smash. I really loved playing this game.

This is a great game but EA could've done so much more. I loved this game (I rented it but I'll be buying it later on) but there are many more things they could've done. They should've had more cut scenes in the game, more combos, and faster flying/superspeed. I enjoyed finally having a game with superspeed but it wasn't fast enough. The story should've also been longer & the final boss should've been Lex in which you should've had to fight him with a powerless Superman. In the next game I'd like them to make a "Villains Mode" where you can choose between Metallo, Mongul & General Zod. With Metallo, they give you a cut scene showing your origin stories & then you are able to destroy the city. You have to destroy enough to make Superman come & after a while you should be able to transform into "Giant Metallo". You have to kill Superman to beat the story but you also have to destroy Metropolis' forces & make them surrender. With Mongul they first show you on War World where you fight different people you've brought to your planet. Then, later on you go to Earth & after you defeat Superman, you take over Earth & make humans square off against each other. Now, with General Zod, he'd have the story mode that'd last the longest. You first start out on Krypton where you & your henchman Non kill off guards to try & achieve your goal which is to rule over Krypton. A fight with Jor-El also wouldn't be a bad idea. In the cut scene following the fight, the police come & arrest Zod & he's then placed into the Phantom Zone by Jor-El & they also show Krypton explode in that same cut scene. For the next part of the story, even with a powerless Zod you still have to fend off Phantoms/other Kryptonians & Non assists you. After that, you are released from the Phantom Zone via a bomb (like in Superman II) & you are then on Earth where you destroy enough to catch Superman's attention. After figuring out who Superman really is, you have to defeat him & after doing so, you take control of Earth, Superman becomes your servant & you also get control of the Fortress of Solitude. And after beating Zod's story mode, if you choose to you should also be able to play through the story again but with Non this time. Non should be able to talk in the game & should be voiced by Jack O'Halloran. Also, if Zod were to be in the next game, he should be voiced by Terence Stamp.

I'll just repost what I said on another forum to save time:
This game has been getting unfairly trounced by the critics but I can't understand why. I mean, the critisims are true to an extant, it can get repetitive but gamespot gave the game a 4.5 which is ridiculous. This is the same site that gave spider-man 2 a 9.0 and that game was also reptitive as hell and also had a crappy camera when things got hairy.
Theres no game crippling glitches or anything like that, so I just dont get such a low score. Perhaps its a bias that superman has, since he's never had even an "okay" game much less a "good" one but thats no excuse.
This game captures what it's like to be superman perfectly (ability wise), and I consider it a must have if you're a superman fan. I'm not very far, so maybe all of a sudden it goes to shit but I doubt it. It's not perfect and I would give it a 7.5, it doesnt deserve anything lower than that.
Hulk:Ultimate Destruction is still top of the heap however, but this is as good as Spider-Man 2.

ok first off let me just say im a superman fan boy..... but come on man thats a bit much too.
1) sence when does superman run out of heat vision.
2) spidermans city was more fun to swing through, supermans is good for fast fly bys. supermans reuses buildings left and right, spidermans has more of a real feel to it
3) repedative enemies (but ofcourse we will skip that as its forgiveable)
4) why cant i just fly around fighting crime why must I constantly stop to battle dragons and robots.... oh yeah cause my life bar is the city damage bar. (I like and dislike this because i for one would like to be able to ignore a crime or two if im just trying to break sound barrier or do fancy fly'n tricks)
(I do agree that you feel as though you are superman, but only to a point)

For the energy bar they shouldn't have had it go down too soon, I hated that. You're in the middle of a fight & in order to let your energy bar fill back up you have to fly all the way back up into the sky or steer clear of the dragons & robots for a few seconds.

It's plugged into a 40" HDTV with all the gadgets and gizmos that are required to get the most out of it. The graphics are still underwhelming given what current technology is capable of. The Superman from Justice League Heroes looked better on my old Xbox than the Superman from this game.
I'm not expecting every game to be Gears of War either, but I was expecting a little more care put into the look of the title character. This isn't to say there isn't some nice eye candy in the game, but it doesn't strike me as being up to the level of current gen consoles. It looks like a PS2 game spruced up a bit for the Xbox 360.
