View Full Version : Who should follow JMS on Amazing Spider-Man?
Mister Mets
11-22-2006, 05:50 PM
Apparantly the new Wizard hints that JMS may be leaving Amazing Spider-Man soon, which begs the question:
Who should follow JMS on the flagship Spider-Man title?
What direction would you like to see them take the series in?
What artists would you like to see them work with?
If you're interested in more comments about this, there are debates about this on the Millar, and Bendis Boards (started by people other than me this time).

The two best directions I can think of for Amazing Spider-Man.
Either Marvel cancels the other Spider-Man books, and makes Amazing Spider-Man into a weekly.
http://forums.comicbookresources.com...d.php?t=152215
Or they do a massive cosmic retcon, and relaunch the franchise.

As for who I'd like to headline Amazing Spider-Man, and establish the direction of the books for the next few years.
Writer- Mark Millar
Artist- Mark Bagley
I doubt they'll stay on the book for more than an year, but I can't think of anyone better to set the book's direction.
Kirkman was the first person I thought of.
Dan Slott or Fabian might be cool too.

Kirkman's Ultimate X-men work is such crap that i don't want to read a book of his ever again.
I would like to see Nicienza here, he surely can handle the Spidey humor pretty well.

Dan Slott, Robert Kirkman or Fabian Nicieza would all be great. Joss Whedon would also be fantastic, but he's a little busy.
Out of left field, I'd also like to see Troy Hickman take on Spidey.
Of course, I doubt it will be any of those guys...

Dunno if I'd go with Fabian but Dan or Robert would be good.
I'm totally expecting a choice out of left field though like Danielle Steele or something.

Hopefully Loeb and Campbell take over ASM.
I did like most of JMS' work and Garney has been great so far!
I am hoping for JRJR to return to Spidey as well! Maybe on FNSM, just for a change of pace, then get into ASM when Campbell and Loeb are done.
Paired with him, I'd love to see Millar. Miller and JRJR's Wolverine run was just Awesome, and I don't usually read Wolvie.
so my vote...
ASM - Loeb and Campbell
FNSM - PAD and JRJR (who then moves to ASM when L and C are done)
ASM - Millar and JRJR

I dunno on writer...I can think of a bunch that would be good, but none I would be super psyched about. Maybe Millar? But I already heard he's going to be working pretty much exclusively on his creator owned stuff post-civil war. Maybe Brian K. Vaughn or Robert Kirkman.
As for artist, bring back Eric Larsen!!

Well my dream writer for ASM is always Robert Kirkman but if we want the title to have a real star-writer Mark Millar is the way to go.
And although it's unlikely that she'll get away from DC, unless I'm misstaken about her being exclusive to them, I would like to see what Gail Simone can do with the character.

I'd like to say Miller is a good fit, but it doesn't sound like this will happen. I recently went back and read his MKSM stuff, and there was something that kinda bothered me. This has also bothered me in CW. He places this emphasis on the A-list of super hero's. I don't really care what list your on as long as you put up a good fight.
Also on the idea of Kirkman. I don't think it would be a great idea. I have just went back and read UXM through his run until now. I think he is a decent writer, but his dialog has issues. It is too expected, and I know I am not the first to say that. I think with a character that has to be funny like Peter he would have a lot of difficulty, it would probably seem corny.
So who should follow JMS.... I don't know. I think it should be some one that has never touched a Spidey book before. Bring some new talent in, let them spice it up. Someone suggested a return of JRJR; that would be great. However, I would rather see him come back and do a short run with JMS, their work together was outstanding. Saying that doesn't mean i don't like Garney, cause I do, but JRJR is a whole nother ball game.

Millar would be a great choice but I doubt he would have the time to do ASM while going around Marvel telling/ advising people on what to do and how to do it. I like Ron Garney. While Millar, Vaughn, Loeb or Whedon would all be excellent choices. I wonder what would happend if someone completley unexpected would come on the title, someone completley out of left field - like Bill Willingham or someone like that...
Though my top choice on a Spider-Man title would be Warren Ellis.
Mister Mets

The exact Wizard quote, referencing the upcoming movie, and high profile summer tie-ins.
"Things won't die down for Spider-Man in the comics wither, as Straczynski ends his six-year writing run on the character with a story- illustrated by Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada- crossing over all three Spider-Man titles and redefining the status quo for Peter and everybody he cares about."
So unless Wizard's really wrong (and they have been known to be) JMS is ending his Spider-man run this summer.

Warren Ellis is a really uneven writer, especially when it comes to superhero comics, although I do believe he could deliver a compelling Spider-Man arc.
I would have no problem with Marvel getting someone we wouldn't think of. That strategy worked well with JMS.

To be honest, I don't think Kirkman's Marvel work as whole has been consistent enough to be handed such a high-profile and demanding writing job.
Nicieza's writing, I find is also inconsistent, and with the exception of C& D, feels too dated.
Slott may be good, but I'm just not sure. I like She-Hulk, but did not like his Thing run. His Spidey/Torch mini was okay, if not a bunch of fluff.
I would like to read his Arkham mini, as well as his upcoming Marvel project, that is supposedly very dark. Just because I would like to see how versatile his material actually reads.
My top picks would be:
Gail Simone - but I think she is an exclusive to DC, and quite happy there, to boot.
BKV - but he has indicated that he wants to focus on creator-owned work. Although, would it hurt to do one consistent corporate monthly to support and raise awareness of the indie market?:D
Mike Carey
Matt Fraction
Someone mentioned Willingham, who I think is a nice out-of-left field choice. His "superhero" work is inconsistent in my opinion, though (Robin = thumbs up, Shadowpact = thumbs in the middle)
Realistically given the high-profileness of JMS's run and the title itself, its one of 3 things:
1. the Loeb/Campbell project
2. someone totally out left field, and impossble to predict, maybe even a writer from another medium. It could be Michael Chabon (who wrote SM 2), for all we know.
3. a wild card guess - Brad Meltzer. Quesada has been wanting him since the moment IC came out. I don't know if he can manage it on top of JLA and his novels, but he'd be great.

It's basically the exact same stunt they did with the Other although the "redefining the status quo" had already happened twice with The Other and Spider-Man Unmasked. While I liked The Other, it wasn't exactly the most well coordinated between writers and Hudlin's issues were on wonkiest side of the spectrum. Then there's the whole arm being broken then not being broken which JMS did a cute gag with.
I'm not a fan of it if they handle it the same way, hopefully it'll be much better in execution and the writers will all be on the same page.

McKeever is going to write the Spider-Man family ongoing. He already got a in-continuity Spidey book.
I thought that I read over at Comicscontinuum that he was only writing the first couple of issues of this book.
According to the Mid-Ohio con report over at Newsarama, he had this to say about his 2007 work:
"I can say that one's a team, and the other is not a team nor is it an individual," he said with a coy smile.
Hmm, is McKeever a Marvel exclusive? Does this take him out of the running for the ASM gig? In all honesty, I'd prefer to see more Gravity before he takes over a high profile book.
I loved Kirkman's take on the Peter/MJ relationship in MTU. However, I'm not sure that he is the right person for the book.
I'm not sure that he could keep up the schedule, but I'd love to see Dan Slott on the book. He gets the character and I generally love pretty much everything that I have read that he has written.

Is JMS leaving the title for some reason ?
If Wizard's right about him leaving, he has several good reasons for doing so.
1. He's a busy man, with Squadron Supreme, Book of Lost Souls, the upcoming Thor relaunch, and TV/ movie projects. Something had to give, and it may just have been Spider-Man.
2. He's been on Spider-Man for 60+ issues, which is an incredible run. He may jut want to do other stuff, and he has the opportunity to leave his run with a bang.
The following are not reasons he's leaving Spider-Man.
1. Marvel's unhappiness with his work.
2. Low sales.
3. Fanboy bitching (I know many fanboys hare him, but given the book's sales, I doubt Marvel's listening.)
4. JMS's unhappines with what Marvel lets him do. He's had incredible freedom on the book, and that risk seems to have paid off.

Well its official now, JMS is leaving Amazing Spider-Man.
This is taken from the babylon5 moderated newsgroup, dated 12/12/06:
> I've seen reports that the latest Wizard magazine mentioned that you're leaving Amazing Spider-Man this coming year. Is that true?
"I've been giving it a lot of thought, and what I've enjoyed writing the
most for Marvel have been the special projects, like Bullet Points, the
new one I'm writing, and I'm most especially happy with how Thor is
going. So I finally felt that the best thing I could do would be to
devote myself almost entirely to those projects...come up with really
cool 6, 12 or 18 issue special projects, in or out of ongoing titles,
or reviving titles, and keep Thor my own monthly mainstream Marvel
book, so I can give all of those the proper amount of attention."
"The cool thing about this is that I get to play anywhere I want in the
Marvel universe, I can tell whatever stories I want without worrying
about continuity for the most part, and best of all the process calls
for the books to be fully written and drawn THEN solicited, so there
are no delays. So right now, on the new project, I'm 4 scripts in out
of 12, pencils are now coming in on issue 3, and we should have the
whole thing done before the first issue hits the stands. That, for me,
is the more satisfying way of doing things."
> And how many more issues of
> Fantastic Four will there be?
"This next one is my last."
> Colleen Doran has said that Book of Lost Souls
> will be back next year. Any idea of a time frame?
>
"Dunno, it's a function of when the first batch of pencils get turned
around."

I'm a Republican, and Millar's my favorite writer in comic books right now, so I'd love to see him do another stint on Spider-Man (and would be overjoyed if that were his 36 issue project.) His last stint was one of the definitive Spider-man stories, and perhaps even the best Green Goblin story ever (I'm not saying it's better than The Death of Gwen Stacy, but it's a better Norman Osborn story.) The series also left Spider-Man in a better place, with the new & improved Venom.

Just a heads up with Dan Slott. He's a fantastic writer, but also the type of guy who'd write a mini series about prison rape in Arkham Asylum just so people wouldn't associate him with children's comics. He has said that if got to write Spider-Man, he'd write an incredibly dark arc just to subvert expectations of him (his post-Civil War project is apparantly going to be dark.)
Granted, we'd probably get some fun stories from him, but we're more likely to get a dark tale out of him.
