View Full Version : The Boys 5 *Spoilers*
Mr. Palmer

Quick synopsis:
Hughie talks to Starlight in the park. Only thing is, he doesn't know he's talking to a Supes...
Meanwhile, The Boys have bugged the Teenage Kix. They've given them a day to out one of their members (of which all have a perverted past), or have The Boys decide one for them.
Teenage Kix offers up Shout Out, who tells the world he is a gay black superhero.
Meanwhile, Butcher apolozies to Hughie. However, Hughie is still uncertain about joining the team; though he does seem to be growing closer...
The Seven have been watching the Teenage Kix episode. They appear to know The Boys are behind it. At the same time, Starlight is told to get a new costume; one which will majorly show off her cleavage.
Finally, via an e-mail, Teenage Kix hunts down The Boys. The Kix are ready for a fight, and that's just what The Boys are prepared to do...

Another good issue.
Even though there's plenty of perverted talk, the nasty sexual angle that the book hinges on has been slightly toned down.
And it's nifty to see that we're (hopefully) finally going to see some knockdown dragout action in the next issue!

A step up over the last issue. Still, this isn't up there with The Midnighter or A Man Called Kev. Interesting to see Hughie and the superheroine meet up - you know they're going to meet again under very different circumstances.

Just one complain about the comic:
The coloring. It's too garish, and doesn't show off Darick's art very well. I almost expected the art to match the high standards Darick has set in Transmet but the coloring in all five issues ruined his art. I mean, look at Starlight, she doesn't look good in every issue I've met. I'm saying the colorist needs to improve his skills or The Boyz should get a better colorist soon.
Other than that, this is nice. I know Hughie & Starlight might meet sometime, but I never expect this issue.

I don't think Robertson has quite nailed Butcher's look yet. It seems pretty inconsistant, especially when he's in the park talking to Hughie. I don't think that it has much to do with the coloring.
I kind of got the feeling that Hughie is gonna turn against the Boys in the future. (I'm talking way in the future). Something about the buddy relationship that Billy's going for seems forced and I can kind of see Billy becoming one of the villains in later stories kinda like...

Aye, I can definitely see Hughie going up against Butcher in the future. Like the Seven are using Annie, the Boys are pretty much using him.

I doubt The Boys would explore deeply their own Nietzchean irony: That if the Boys can defy the Supes, would they themselves become Supes? Would they end up wrenching the world from their hands, and become more than supes? Conquering & controlling the Earth instead of actually just enforcing the law? Would they become gods themselves?
I doubt Garth Ennis would do such a thing, despite what he did with Preacher.

I bet Hughie is suddenly happy he was given that injection at the end of the issue. Next issue should be a blinder, and hopefully the Teenage Kix will get what is coming to them.
Anyone else think Homelander is a little scared of Butcher?

He does seem to make him a bit nervous...
For me, nothing will be settled until A-Train gets his teeth knocked down his throat.
Yes, it seems that The Boys really does have a strong moral centre as represented by Wee Hughie and Starlight. The conflicts between The Boys and the superheroes seems to be providing the dramatic conflict (oh and the humour - in spades) whilst I imagine that those two will go through certain trials and conflicts and ultimately be brought together amid the chaos.
I'm really looking forward to getting a better picture of the Young Americans now, I think thats gonna be brilliant.
I thought that #5 was another excellent issue. My favoruite moment: Homelander casually drawing Starlight's new costume onto her. Oh and Butcher explainign why Teenage Kix had to drop ShoutOut. Its all so wickedly funny!

great issue--this comic is the most interesting thing out there right now.
agree with the 'casually redrawing of the costume' comment--shows that to the homelander, she is just property. or perhaps a better way to put it --there is a hierarchy that is not violoated.
I am thinking that the people behind the seven (marketers, etc.) are actually supes themselves and the supes and villians that the public 'sees' are actually sort of like proffessional wrestlers--just putting on a show. the most powerful supes hang back and run the show from behind the curtains.

My only complaint about this series is the incredibly slow pacing-- it's definitely geared towards the trade paperback, since it's taken us 5 issues and the team has only just formed. Obviously not designed for the single issue format ( though very few print comics are these days ). I would have preferred that instead of a " forming of the team " arc, we'd instead have the team already formed, with Wee Hughie's problems detailed in flashback.
Beyond that, it's my favorite comic currently on the shelves. :)

I'm not sure if 'The Boys' is allowed to be a Wildstorm book.
Since it's being released on schedule and all.

I love the concept of this book. Anti-cape and spandex. Think about it, if the average human, with average to poor ethics and morals, like the president or any politician had super powers.
This book totally fits the times.
i heard Garth intends to out preacher Preacher with this book, and is in it for the long haul as he has a 5 year plan.
This is going to be added to my pull list. I give it 3.5 stars out of 5 stars, with the more inappropriate issues receiving even higher marks

Cockney rhyming slang? Sure it fits in with the characters, but how many readers actually got that joke even after Butcher explained it?
