GOTF wasn't as bad. Try Saikano, and Automatic Maiden Mahoromatic. Saikano freakin' rips your heart out of your chest, feeds it to you then kicks you in the guts till you chuck it up again.

what makes it so bad is the fact i don't get emotional during movies I mean I girl friend drags me so see these so called sad movies all the time and the whole theatre would be crying and i would be like it's just a fucking movie. but for some reason GOTF go me all choked up. DAMN YOU HAYAO MIYAZAKI!

Pretty much GotF wins this. The only anime I know that comes as close to ripping your heart out is "Dog of Flanders".

Still, Grave of the Fireflies ranks pretty damn high.

DAMN YOU HAYAO MIYAZAKI!

I think Grave of the Fireflies is an Isao Takahata film. Stil a Studio Ghibli production, but not directed by Miyazaki.

I've quoted my friend before on this...

"Grave of the Fireflies is a film that everybody should see... ONCE."

There's a story down here in Australia from the early days of anime fandom about how one of the clubs scheduled Grave of the Fireflies and Windaria at the same screening. The schedule was changed at the last minute to prevent club members from slashing their wrists afterward.

I myself didn't really think it was all that sad, if anything, I viewed as trying to hard to be sad.
I saw Elfen Lied as tragic though.

Really. Everyone in my anime club had been going on about how sad it was supposed to be. I didn't find it sad at all, as I said before, to me it just seemed like the movie was trying too hard, it came off as forcing the sadness to me. But that's just me. If other people find it sad, that's cool.

For me, I originally thought so but then I found out it was semi-autobiographical and basically everything that happened in the show happened in real life.

The American cartoon Exosquad had a similar moment.

The main hero, JT Marsh, sends his E-Frame suit into a volcano so it will overload and cause an eruption. Even though he wasn't plugged into it, the suit said "farewell, Operator Marsh." He then stood there stunned.

Wow, I'm surprised I actually remember that. It's too bad the show got cancelled though. It was the American Macross/Robotech of its time.

Saikano is up there.

Mahoromatic isn't that bad if you consider the manga canon.

Devilman ends pretty badly too. And by that I mean Apokalypse of Amon.

The Mahoromatic anime didn't wrap up the same way as the manga though, which is why I consider manga canon.

Haven't watched it myself, but with Mahoromatic, isn't the end the only part that is really major tragedy, and the rest is mostly farcical comedy and action?

Saikano is WAY up there on the list. So is Now and Then, Here and There.

Also, EXO Squad was way ahead of its time as an American made cartoon. Many sad moments in that series.

Grave was pretty sad, but I shed no tears, although the waterworks came a runnin in DBZ when Gohan got his ass kicked by Recoom(the scene where his eyes go totally white). When Goku finally shows up, I coulda drowned an entire city with my tears:p

Grave of theFireflies hands down...to watch 2 orphan children abandonned to starve by their heartless aunt and to watch them die just at the very moment they might have been saved, was heartwrenching......I only watched it once, thought it one of the best anime movies I ever saw but, doubt I could EVER watch it again! It's a toss-up between NGE, and FMA for me (I've never seen Grave of the Fireflies - not sure if I want to based on what I've read about it).

"End of Eva" can be really sad if you really stop to think about it... but the whole thing is so bizarre and warped that the sheer weirdness of it all can sometimes block out a sense of sadness.

Full Metal Alchemist feels a bit more realistic to me, and hence the sadness of certain parts of the anime resonates a bit more with me.

I agree. Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in our Early Days were very sad to me too.

Gunslinger Girl had some sad elements.

And Jin-Roh, jesus, that was depressing.

Gantz actually kind of depressed the hell out of me since so many of the main characters were killed off.

(these were all excellent by the way if kind of a bummer to watch)

(I have yet to see GotF, i would like to though. I hear many things about it and I am interested in wether or not what I have heard is true)

Trigun is one if the saddest things I have ever seen, the trial and hardships Vash is put through is enough to bring me to tears every time I think about it.

Voices of a Distant Star and The Place Promised in our Early Days will make me cry every time I watch them. They are wonderfuly depressing and if you pay attention and don't zone out on the slow parts, you will cry as well.

Jin-Roh was able to make me cry the first time I watched it.. now I simply find it depressing..

Blue Submarine #6 made me really depressed as well.. i have not seen the whole series, but the parts i do see now and then seem very sad.

Gantz actually kind of depressed the hell out of me since so many of the main characters were killed off.

I cried when Tae died, I shed a few tears when Izumi died, which I didn't expect to do, I cried a lot when I realised that neither Kurono or Tae would remember their relationship.

Gantz is full of tear jerker moments.

I cried when Nico Robin's past was revealed.

I've cried a lot at Berserk, but not so much these days.

I cried when Vegeta sacrificed himself to kill Majin Buu.

I cried like a child when Maes Hughes got killed. That really upset me.

I cried when Wolfwood died in Trigun.

...

I think I cry quite a lot.

Can't think of the saddest anime ever since I don't watch anime of a depressing genre, but I can think of moments.

-When Yoh was beaten by Hao and temporarily lost his soul.

-Tomoe's death at the hands of Battousai and Kaoru's orchestrated 'death'.

-When Leomon sacrificed himself to protect Jeri and the other Tamers.

- When Asahina was inadvertently killed by Ayato while she was trying desperately to write down her feelings for him before she died.

-Maes Hughes's death and little Elicia's during his funeral. The poor girl, I cried along with her in that scene.:(

-Lucy's death at the end of the manga. Even though I dislike her character in the manga, I felt so much pity for her when she begged Kouta to end her life. Makes me appreciate the anime even more.

I haven't seen GotF, and after the remarks here, I will probably avoid it. I don't deliberately seek out sad experiences. So, the saddest anime that I've seen so far was the final episode of Rumbling Hearts. That one ripped out my heart and showed it to me. The ending was just so beautiful and realistic and yet unfair and sad. If my girlfriend or I ever decide to end our relationship, I have a feeling that we're going to quote that episode's breakup scene.

Grave of the FireFlies, those kids were angst personified, and the boy was pretty much more emo and depressing than Sasuke, Shinji, Shinn combined.

I wept so much I stayed in my room for a week, that movie was just that good and soul breaking.

And theres Naruto, where Sasuke's story was in to place, Sasuke left the village and Sakura cried for him, and he left Naruto and his freinds behind. Most people would hate Sasuke for that, but I felt sorry for him because he really was emotionally screwed up. That was a sad moment.

Shell, YOU have not seen Grave yet?!? O.o

I too only caught this by accident years ago, but really, some of you amaze. If Grave does not make you sad there is something wrong with you. It's not fantasy at all, more of a war movie. If you don't get the least bit down by that movie you are too jaded for what happens in real life.
