I've heard it's quite good. Right up there with Brubaker's run, even.

I HAVE read the beginning of the current volume and it is very good, IMO. Very noir, very early, early DC feel to it. The trade paperback has a distinctly Batman Year One feel to it, too. Highly recommended if you like gritty street drama or early BTAS, maybe not so much if you like cheesecake art and superheroing.

Hope that helps. ^_^

Catwoman is the best heroine book out right now, if you ask me. On the one hand, she's got down-to-Earth problems. She's a single mother now, and she's handling the responsibility incredibly well (all things considered). On the other hand, she's still a vigilante, one who just pulled out more stops than a Summer box office smash.

These past four issues have been so much fun. Pfiefer's created a hero worthy of rogue status, with as much flair for the dramatic as both The Joker and The Riddler combined, and with an endless wealth of gimmicks at his disposal. Film Freak's just one more step towards making Catwoman a steady hero with a real rogues gallery and her own personal psycho.

Recent issues will disappoint if you're a Bat-Cat 'shipper. Other then that, yes it's been good.

Prepare to hate Zatanna & Co. if you catch up on the stuff immediately before OYL.

I completely loved the Brubaker run (#1-37).
Everything that followed has been borderline unreadable crap IMO.

Especially the brilliant plot twist in which
SPOILER

Catwoman is revealed not to be a strong character who reformed on her own, but instead a victim that was magicked into reforming just to keep Batman happy.

One of my favourites. And one of the more mature and adult (in the strictest sense) books on the market. If you want something intelligent and well written you can't go wrong with Catwoman.

The current Will Pfeifer run has been mediocre at best. I haven't really been enjoying it that much, but it has not yet gotten to a point where I would consider dropping the series.

However, I highly recommend Ed Brubaker's run (#1-37). Catwoman was the best comic book on the stands when written by Brubaker. The majority of Brubaker's run has been collected in four TPBs: The Dark End of the Street (#1-4), Crooked Little Town (#5-10), Relentless (#11-19), and Wild Ride (#20-24).

Brubakers run was amazing in fact i would say it was that good i can't see another writer ever topping it.

Pfeifers run is good and if you are looking to just hop aboard now you wont be disappointed but i would definitely recomend Brubakers run.

I really, really liked the title for the first 40 issues or so - but I think it's in a bit of a slump right now.

I'm still buying it, reading it and enjoying it - but no where near as much as I was two years ago ...

Just adding that Darwyn Cooke's graphic novel 'Selina's Big Score' was quite excellent as well and at least on par with the Brubaker issues.

Yeah, I thought Brubaker's run was amazing, up until Gulacy took over penciling duties. It was my favorite ongoing title at the time. I definitely recommend the first 24 issues or so and the Selina's Big Score GN.

The current Will Pfeifer run is pretty good, but it doesn't grab me as much as the early Brubaker run. Manhunter has taken up the title of being my new favorite DC heroine comic.

I like Pfeifer's villains.

And that's all I'm going to say.

Yes.

Criminally under-rated.

Yep. Film Freak is one of the best new villains in the past few years and I really hope he sticks around Gotham. He isn't just a great Catwoman villain, he's a great gimmick villain who fits right in with the Arkham regulars.

Became an instant fan of Film Freak over the last few issues.

He's crazier and funnier than the Joker has been in years!

I love this series, but the recent issues have left a bad taste in my mouth, especially with the reveal of who the baby-daddy is, and the circumstances by which he became the babydaddy. ugh. Badly written porn-dialogue.

Damn straight! He has a much more interesting hook than either The Joker or The Riddler, while maintaining great aspects from both- Joker's insanity and Riddler's mystery.

I agree, it could've been pulled off a whole lot better, but I'm not disappointed in who the father is, because honestly; who would it have been? Bruce can't have a kid in his life, as Morrison's pretty strongly pointed out, Ted's way out of left field, and Slam's older than dirt.

I agree. I thought it was pretty obvious from the start who the father was. I mean, if it was Bruce, I tend to think that he would've done a bit more than come by with a teddy bear, make some promises about paying for college, then just take off.

As for Film Freak, he's a fun character, and I enjoyed all the movie references, but his arc dragged on so long that I never want to see him again, or at least not for a few years.

Ok, I have no explanation for this, but 29 days out of the month, I think about "Hmm, which books could I trim from my monthly pull list? I know, I could get rid of Catwoman. That's what I'll do." Then, bam! Day 30 rolls around, and I get the book in, and I really enjoy it. I have no idea why, exactly, but it's a good read.

Brubaker's run was truly a masterpiece. Pfeifer's--though not as strong as Brubaker's--is nonetheless still very good. It's unfair to criticize him on the basis that he's not Brubaker. Catwoman is still one of the best OYL titles IMO.

Is Holly still Catwoman?

The way you guys are talking it seems like Selina's got a baby at home and STILL goes out at night dressed up.

Can I at least get you to tell me if your "issues sans babynapping" counter is correct?

There were three Catwoman issues OYL before the baby got kidnapped.

When it turned out she had a baby, someone (Corrina?) said we should put up a counter to keep track of how many issues before the kid got kidnapped. I did. Three.

Corrina
11-24-2006, 06:23 PM
Three. Yep, that's about right.

Not much to do with a kid in superhero comics except kidnap them, have them be hurt by a villain, or be given superpowers of their own, at least so I surmise from the fates of all the superhero kids.

Kate Spencer's kid apparently wins the trifecta.

Holly was Catwoman for a while, but she got picked up by the cops, so Selina had to don the costume again, and now they're both Catwoman. Odds are, they'll both keep the title so Selina can stand down from certain things and let Holly be a hero for a while while she takes care of Helena, while giving her the chance to get out and fight crime here and there herself. She's already had Ted give her fighting lessons so she can protect herself better, and hopefully not get dropped by Angle Man again. :p

When I first saw the counter, I thought that every issue of the current Catwoman series involved a baby being kidnaped, except for three issues.

Sort-of like a Number of Superman issues without Lois or Jimmy being in peril counter.

Though Superman hasn't had to save Lois in a few issues.

I quite enjoy Catwoman OYL. Some might not like Film Freak or the fact Helena's daddy isn't Bruce, but I can't get enough.

It's one of the few Bat-titles, and even DCU titles that I actually look forwards to still.

Jack Zodiac

Yeah. On the short list of titles I can't wait to read month-to-mothing, Catwoman is right in there between Superman and Blue Beetle.

Yes, but a better explanation would have taken up more tag space... which would have meant removing "YOUR VILLAIN MEMBERSHIPS ARE HEREBY REVOKED!", one of my favorite scenes.
