Hi,
I need to figure something out. Please help.
Next Jan, 2007 when I get my end of the year bonus I wanted to get a 360. It will be my next-gen console purchase.
Ive always been a nintendo fan before, but feeling burned by the lack of games for the Gamecube, and the apparent "kiddy-ness" of nintendo Ive decided to forfit the Wii.
I will not spend my money on Sony because my PS2 broke down ofter 6 months and I never got it replaced. Ive heard some good things about the 360, and many franchise games are coming for that system (ie: Resident Evil 5). Also, spending 399 canadian seems more reasonable than the 800 for a PS3.
Am I making the right decision? I am not a gamer, nor am I a fancy kinda guy. I dont have HDTV, I dont have home internet, and I dont own a IPOD.
I just want a fun console, with plenty of games. Not a system that will gather dust like my Gamecube, or a super expensive-defective console like the PS3.
What have been your experences. And is there any advice you can give?
Thanks in advance,
TFANS

The 360 is a safe bet, and with a fair amount of backwards compatibility available (not all the games, mind you), you'll be able to play original XBox titles as well.

thats what im hoping.
but ive been reading some reviews at amazon.com about technical issues and overheating problems for this console. and some stuff about how if you dont have an HDTV some games wont work.

It depends on the games you like to play as to which system you should go with. In anycase spend a few bucks more on your system and get a two or three year warrenty.

oh yeah, I planning on getting a warranty for sure. The best I can get.
I like adventure, action and horror games. seeing as 360 has plenty of FPS game, dead rising and the coming darkness and RE5, and balzing angels, I know it has plenty of games ill like.

I haven't heard of any issues surrounding HDTV.
Keep in mind you'll need to burn a CD of the emulation software from xbox.com and buy the hard drive if you want to play the XBox back catalogue on the 360.
There's plenty of great older adventure and action titles available for $20 or less. Be on the lookout for Serious Sam, Beyond Good and Evil, Psychonauts and Jet Set Radio Future.

just dont buy Dead Rising. That game needs an HDTV, the text is actually defective and unreadable on normal res TVs.

Get another PS2. Most bang for your buck really. I only bought one last year. There are more good games for it than will be on 360, Wii, or PS3 put together for at least the next 2 years. Sorry yours broke, but I know people who still have initial releases of the system that still work. It happens. Get the $20 warranty from gamestop if your worried. They just hand you a new one if anything happens.

The Wii Is only 250 and is less of a kid system than you might think...
My brother was supposed to get one early last week but my contacts have fallen through, so we have to wait till tommarrow but yeah.
I cannot stand Xbox or the 360.
It glitches, has almost not good games and crashes.
(I am not a neautral person in this though I cant really help you. all i can do is tell you how much i hate xbox.)

The 360 is the safest bet of all the next gen systems at the moment. Get Gears of War, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Call of Duty III, Dead Rising, and pre-order Rainbow 6 Vegas. Prepare yourself for gaming Nirvana.

thanks guys.
I really cannot stand sony and will not support them any longer.
and while I dont have HDTV, I will still pick up dead rising. Im a sucker for all things zombies.
alot of systems glitch, my PS2 especially. funny thing is that I have never had any problems with any of my nintendo consoles. my N64 still works, even after sitting in a dusty closet for 3 years.
anyone else have any experience with their 360 system?

And, what, Microsoft has such excellent business practices you have no compunctions about supporting them?
Your loss, because the PS2 is clearly the best buy for a gamer such as yourself (I don't even see a point in Next Gen quite yet). There are dozens of games that you can get used for around 10 bucks that are better than anything on 360. Suit yourself I guess.

I guess I came off a little harsh, Im sorry.
Im just a little wary of getting another PS2 after mine broke down and destroyed my games. "Disc error read" and then I'd take out my games and they'd be all scratched up. When it did work, I really liked the games I played on it (RE4, Mercenaries, Katamari). But for $129.00, I could use that money and put it towards a new, next-gen system. And yes, a PS2 still costs 129 here in Canada.

If you are buying the xbox 360, don't by the cheap one w/o the hard drive. It isn't worth it. Spend the extra 100 dollars, and get the premium one. The hard drive is pretty much a necessity.

I'll tell you what the crappiest part is. First of all the 360 problems and yes there are problems but don't look to Microsoft to fix those problems anytime soon. This is do to how Microsoft has a bad history of fixing it problems.:( The wii is a really good system. But The wii has only one real problem is that I don't like to have to wave your hands around all over the place just to move your game character through a room. I'm sorry I know that most would disagree with me but I just don't like that idea that Nintendo has for the controllers. The only other thing I don't like about the wii is it's name the wii. Great I think I'll go wii myself now.:D The thing is I have a PS2 and that thing has never broke down at all. My brother has a PS2 and a Gamecube and those two have never broke down as long as my brother kept them. But the PS3 I mean WOW this is a great system. but the two things that really hurt it. One is that Blu-Ray crap. I mean do they really think that Blu-Ray is really going to replace DVD. DVD's are all over the place and have already set themselves in most homes. But Blu-Ray has not. Not only that Blu-Ray cost more which goes to the number two problem and that is the cost. I'm sorry but Sony has to get rid of that Blu-Ray crap so they can sell PS3 at a more lower price.
So, what's a safe bet. Well I hate to say this but the wii win for me hands down. I may not like to wave my hands around the room like an idiot. But it beats have to pay through the roof on a system or having to wait for Microsoft to fix anything and by the time they do the there next-gen console will already be announced.

How about all 360s made in 2005 get free repairs? Sound like they're not fixing problems?

Yeah, I played a ton of that Wii.

That's your opinion and that's fine. I'm just saying what really hurts 360 is Microsoft and the not so good job that they'll know for. I'm sorry but this is a fact. Microsoft with both Xbox and Windows have a known history of slow repairs. And there internet is pay. Sorry but Sony beast Microsoft by doing that for free. I don't know about Nintendo. And that's just using your own home internet that your already paying for. Free repairs is nice but Microsoft is going to need a little bit more then that.

Surely they'll have a function to turn it off, though? Cause they'd have to be aware of that kind of thing turning people away.
I dunno.

The PS2 online was free. But don't you DARE try to tell me that the PS2 online service was better than Live. Live blew it away.
The fact of the matter is, Live is worth paying for because it is HIGH QUALITY.

OOKK? Let's take a deep breath and slow things down.
Look a Quality is Quality and a fact is a fact and so is free is will free.
Quality tells ether it's High are low that it's quality.
Fact over looks quality and tells you if it's really High are low quality. It just gives you the fact.
But free. Well with free... Screw the facts and quality it's free! When you see something for free you not going to care about facts or quality your just going to take it.
By the way Microsoft has a list of all there Xbox Live users because it's pay. But Sony has no list are even cares. You just come in and use it. That's it.

You may want to rewrite that cause that's pretty confusing right there.
But as to your point, yes, free is free, but maybe a higher quality system could be done for a fee?
Choice is choice!

True. It's just that Astonishing X-Fan (AKA nutjob) seems to like Xbox live it a little then he should.
Look I got a PS2 and I like playing my game on the internet for free. Screw the facts and quality of what's better. I'm getting my internet gaming for free. I can care less about the others. But if you want to say for Xbox live that's fine. Your not sending my money and it's your to do with however you like. Sorry I made you think other wise. I don't mean it.:(

Fair enough. Doesn't effect me either way, I need to see what Nintendo's going to do.
Internet console gaming doesn't concern me too much, so if it turns out good, awesome, but if not, never mind.

You're making the right decision, if the 360's games for 2007 excite you; the currently available titles aren't loaded with surefire hits. If you're interested in Halo 3, Halo Wars or upcoming exclusives like Splinter Cell 5, then go for it.
Got mine less than 2 months ago, it's pretty slick. The HD-DVD drive is an option worth considering to get killer looking movies as well (Batman Begins at 1080p = phenomenal).

I guess I came off a little harsh, Im sorry.
Im just a little wary of getting another PS2 after mine broke down and destroyed my games.
And everyone is sorry to hear about your unfortunate Playstation experience, but I can pretty much guarantee that if you buy a new PS2 now, that will not happen again. The firs PSX I owned died on me, but I had it for nearly two years and it was used. The second one I bought brand new and it never gave me any problems and I've never felt any animosity towards Sony over it.
After two years of heavy use and my own PS2 is still going strong. I'm guessing you probably got one of the early generation systems. Early systems are always glitchy and that was especially true for PS2. They got sued over it and as a consquence have to fix pretty much any system for free if you say the magic words, "Disc Read Error." (Not sure if tha's still true. The terms of the class action settlement hav probably ended.)
Anyway, if you absolutely must own a next gen system, 360 looks like the way to go. PS3 and Wii are too new to quite trust them yet and because it's been out a while, 360 seems to have the most games worth checking out at this point.
That said, I really do reccomend giving PS2 a second look. The problems that lead to your original PS2's death have been worked out and there are dozens of great games that can be bought cheap. Lots to keep you busy until your next bonus, when it'll probably be a little more clear how the three next gen systems are shaping up.
Your decision of course, just my two cents.

First, I believe the latest 360s are much safer than the early models (red ring of death), but I'd STILL get a warrantee.
Second, I think Dead Rising is still pretty easy to play without being able to read that text. Hard game though, IMHO, and I was really looking forward to it.
Third, and most important, look st what games are coming out for each console, decide which ones interest you the most, and then make your choice. I WAS going to get a Wii first, but I'm just a LOT more interested in the games on 360.
