<The following post is intended to be annoying in order to offset my reputation for sensible posting. Although the question at the end is legitimate and one I would like an answer to.>

Ok, so I have to go to the post office and mail off a letter, right? And, like, the letter's really important, right? So, I tell the postman that is has to be, like, date-stamped and go out TODAY, right? So, the postman puts the date-stamp on the letter and then he digs out a sheet of stamps to put the postage on and he says: "I'll even put a Superman stamp on it so we can be SURE that it'll get there fast." Which I think is so cool, right?

So then I find out that there is a whole sheet of superhero stamps available! Ok, so they're, like, all DC heroes, but that's still cool, right? So I go, "hmm, do I need stamps?" And the postman goes "you can never have too many stamps!" So I, like, buy the whole sheet.

So, like, I'm looking at the stamps, right? And I notice that there are only, like FOUR superheroine stamps - two WonderWoman and two Supergirl. Which is totally, like, uncool. Although it is pretty cool that the Green Arrow Black Canary went out with is on the sheet.

So, anyway, I'm looking at the superheroine stamps and I notice: Wonder Woman wears PINK fingernail polish!

So here's the question: Why does Wonder Woman need long, pink fingernails? I think this question goes right to the heart of earlier discussions we've had on gender, writing, and the portrayal of women, especially women with mythical backgrounds, in comics.

So, weigh in, folks! Why WOULD Wonder Woman need long, pink fingernails?

She thought it would help her nab a man, as opposed to grabbing one and dragging him back home? ;)

She had a "pamper me" day at the spa, and was to polite to refuse?

She told her stylist she has to look fierce in battle, and that fool f'ed up her request.

Thanks, Stacy. Those are all good answers.

What a sensational question, Sally. If you had member access to some of the same websites I have, you'd know exactly why she needs those fingernails.

As for the stamps, I gave Sk some of them for her birthday. Get her to share some of her heroines, and you'll have more that way. Does this help any?

I'm not sharing my DC Superhero stamps! I won't even use them.

I want DC Superhero stamps... *pouts*

Lousy Australian postal system.

If it's the same sites I'm thinking of, then heeeeee you got a dirty mind.

Or I do, if I'm wrong.

Now I'm thinking things I shouldn't. Thanks a lot. :p

The pink is the dried blood of her enemies. Those amazons are animals.

Just because she's fighting evil doesn't mean she can't look pretty.

Because, she's the fing Wonder Woman! Oh wait it's the d*** Wonder Woman my bad.

Here's a woman who's the Amazon peace person to the world and to help with that peace she wares their flags as under ware. I don't think Pink nails are a problem for her.

Because, her friend told her it would look real cool, because she was jealous of how regal every one thought Wonder woman was. And she told her this because she thought Pink Nails looked trashy. And thought it would kill it. Wonder Woman is trying to play it off. Trying to make every one think it's the new cool look and every woman who wants to be Regal like Wonder woman will start warring pink nail polish. Granted first she has to stop dressing like she's trying to be Ms. America as Themascras embassies to be Regal, but hey.

Seriously why is it when she gets a hair cut it's press? Next time we care about Wonder Woman is nail polish? When your the second strongest character in a comic universe it's sad the only thing people pay note of is that your apperance changes?

I think the concern here is that it's anti-feminist to begin with.

Whereas... I think, personally, that Wonder Woman does (and to some extent should) stand for feminist principles on some levels even while playing up to patriarchal stereotypes on others (ie. the costume).

She's an empowered woman written largely to sway horny (and later transgendered or gay) adolescent males about female empowerment.

So of course she wears high heels, a swimsuit, a tiara, pink fingernail polish and uses bondage motifs.

I've seen numerous scholarly articles suggesting that Wonder Woman being more popular with girls than boys is a myth.

Batgirl, for her faults, was much more successful at finding a female audience as were the X-Men ladies.

But I think it's a faulty assumption that Wonder Woman is really all that different than Phantom Lady or Vampirella on an aesthetic level. The substansive difference is that she sells female empowerment to teenage boys to a much larger degree than the typical "good girl"/"bad girl" pinup character. She has stronger ideology and a more fleshed out world and personality.

But pink fingernail polish fits right in with my impression of her as a character.

I'm pretty sure that picture was drawn in the late 1950's, and in case you didn't know it, woman back then were required by law to wear nail polish. Say what you want, but she's just being a proper lady.

I'm not seeing how finger nails chang that. Posably she doesn't any more, but at one time she did enough to were the Feminest movment got Mad at Wonder Woman being de powered and taught Kung Fu. Not sure if it was Gala Stnem or not. But, Dernis O'Neil felt terable about it.(this is probly the man whom made Bat Girl an impowering charcter. To start with.) Still, one thing as a by product that anoyed me Basrbra Kestel gave a interview on Fan Boty Raddio saying how as a child it bothered her that she was taught Kung Fu not just by a man, but by a cripple man. Likje what she doesn't belive a disable man can teach anyu one any thing? As a disablesd man thAT anoyed me. So I don't read her work. But, I digress. True she was saposed to be the first empowering female charcter. Yep Babs was a more oe that fit that. Betty Kane not so much. Well, not till Geff Ghones wrote her in Beast boy. As fire Brid. Vamp has a desent charctersation. And was never the "tee hee" charcter. She just gets bad press. Lady Death was more the whinny charcter. As for the pink nails being dressy never took away Alexis Caractions empowering.

Whom I think was pobly liked a lot more than Chystal. Didn't watch much Dynesty, but hey I was a kid. Love of pretty things never took away her empowerment. (Or her Gay icon ablity.) Buffy as well. Same for Dolly Parton. Hey Cher minus her time with Sonny. Most of the charcters in Sex in the City. Personly I think She-Hulk could fit all that better as a super hero charcter. Minus her time in the Avangers. The Days of "Read Darling" Charcters are long gone. Granteed there are still the "Connan help" charcters from time to time. Which is sad. I hope at any rate. Hawk Girl at this point. Would be a great a great empowering charcter. But, I not a feminist. (heck I'm a strait male.) Still, Huntress odd idea of the midrift (glad it's gone.) Or Black Canrry's Stalkings and high heels don't de-empower them. Same with the gawdy make up of Elvirea back in the day. Thasnx for your time.

Ahh, the Eisenhower administration, last bastion of the feminine mystique.

Although, really ... pink and red rarely go together. She should have chosen red, since it is already in her outfit.
