Manga artist and writer Ken Ishikawa died November 15, 2006, of a heart attack.

He was mostly known in the US for authoring, along with Gô Nagai, the Starvengers animated series released in English by Jim Terry Productions as part of its Force Five program.

The original title of the series was Getter Robo G. It was part of a four-part saga starting with Getter Robo, followed by Getter Robo G, Getter Robo Go and Getter Robo Ark, a sequel that Ishikawa was currently working on that will probably never be completed now.

Part of Getter Robo Go was released in English by Viz Comics under the title Venger Robo.

The series featured the first heroic giant robot to combine from individual parts. As such, it is often considered as a precursor to the whole transforming robot genre. Transformers, Go-Bots and Robotech own a great deal of inspiration to Getter Robo.

The three transforming modes of Getta Robo G became known to the American audience in the 70s as the toys "Dragun", "Poseidon" and "Raider" in Mattel's Shogun Warriors line.

Ishikawa was also the author of several adult-oriented stories in the horror genre. The best known among these might be Beast Fighter: Majuu Zensen The Apocalypse, a story of humans fusing with animals worthy of Cronenberg's most mind-boggling splatter extravaganzas.

He was 58 years old.

The opening sequences of the three Getter Robo animated series are available here (http://www.openget.net/opening.html).
