Yes. I once lent $100 to a guy that promised he'd pay me back right away.

I have not since heard from him.

He was a gay male porn star.

Consider it a lesson learned and I have since not loaned anybody money that isn't my mother or brother.

I used to give change to people I knew were either druggies or alchos.

I liked to believe they'd actually spend it on something more useful.

Ditto.
My mom was supposed to raise me on $25 a week child support and he couldn't even give her that.

Right now I have three comic book shops who are consigning my books and owe me money.

Now, I'm usually not overly aggressive in collecting on my consignment money. It takes time and that's something I'm in short supply. Part of the problem is on my own shoulders.

One shop is has consigned my books the longest. It's out of state and it's hard for me to contact anyone there. I haven't tried to hard to collect on them.

Another shop is new to carrying my books and the owner is a good person so I'm not too worried about getting paid.

The third, however, is a different story.

It's been over six months that they've owed me money. I've talked to my contact person there several times, each time I've gone away with a promise from his person that I'll be paid soon.

They've been selling my books. I know, because I've had readers contact me from the area about buying it there. That's the only reason I sent my second issue after never being paid for the first.

It's not the money. It's about keeping your word.

Thankful I'm done consigning books now that future comics will be distributed through Diamond. Let them try to stiff Diamond.

Just as an aside, all three shops are well known and well respected. You'd think that being honorable would be part of the package.

Same with my dad. After years of going to court to get him to pay, his commanding officer in the Navy made him cough it up.

I was 12 when he finally paid. He left when I was 3 months old. When my brother hit 18 (a year after he started paying) he stopped paying us both, retired from the Navy, moved to Greece, and we never saw him or any money again.

I loaned a friend of mine two hundred dollars four Christmases ago to get his family some presents, and he said he'd get me back after New Year's. Haven't seen a dime of it, and to top it off, he never spent the money on his family. Before I left town, I knifed each one of his truck's tires. I did it again the first time I went back home to visit, and then once more about a year ago. Me? Petty? Naw. It's debt! It's the gift that keeps on givin'.

Meanwhile, I have a friend here in Cincinnati who's had a real shit run of luck this past year between her and her husband's jobs, so I loaned her three hundred bucks to keep her electricity running one month... uh, back in June. Her husband's finally getting a real, steady job and she keeps telling me she'll get it soon. So, we'll see about that one.

I don't loan people money for this reason. Monkey Boy and I loan each other cash occasionally, but I know where he sleeps.

If a friend needs money and I have it to spare, I'll give them the cash they need. If I get it back, great, if not, I gave it to them, so I'm not concerned.

I gave up on loaning money a long time ago. If its not someone in my immediate circle, then they can forget it. Some people were desperate to get the money, and called/left messages/sent out telepathic signals to get in touch with me, and after they got the cash, they abrubptly vanished. When I called and asked for it back I got this response like I'm a cheap bastard.

AOL Time-Warner getting behind on the royalty checks?

Need us to shake Didio down for you. Maybe we could leave Yogo on the doorstep of DC Comics as an example.

Kidding. Kidding.

Nobody ever owes me more than a few bucks because I won't loan anything I wouldn't just as easily give unless it's like an investment into something concrete.

I'm probably extra cautious because of this kid I knew in grade school named Lester Lowery. He talked me into giving him one of the G.I.Joe Crimson Twins. He wanted Tomax and Xamot but I just gave him Tomax because I didn't have the heart to part with both. I had an unbelievable emotional attachment to my comics and action figures and stuffed animals in Kindergarten and would cover my bed in them before I went to sleep, going back and forth between Green Arrow fighting He-Man and reading about Uncle Scrooge's adventures. Lester swore to me that he didn't have any toys and my heart just broke for him.

Anyway, my parents got invited to visit Lester's mother and y'know what? He had so many toys that his room in the trailer had a special loft support for his bed. He had to sleep against the ceiling. Boxes full of toys covered his walls and he gleefully confided in me, almost like a victorious Bond villain, how he had talked other kids into giving him all of those toys.

I was disgusted.

I had a very four color childhood, I think. Aside from my nemesis with the double L's. There was also the school bully Ben Grimm who was the first person I ever punched. There was a Sue Storm I had a crush on for all of ten seconds. There was an aspiring cop in 6th grade named Jim Gordon. My elementary school principal had an identical twin that he would trade out with periodically. There was a teacher's strike in which my teacher carried a gun on the picket lines and I crossed the picketers and security in front of the school as part of a protest mob. I was born where the Mothman sightings happened near the bridge that collapsed. My hippie gifted program teacher in fourth grade had us meet in a trailer with monkey bars on the ceiling that we could climb. I was in every experimental class or program I could be.

So I suppose it's no surprising that my very notion of "deadbeat" conjures up a surreal playground story.

I might get stuck with a deadbeat that might not pay me back. This could happen if I join up with Kiva.com. It's micro-loan type deal where private people loan money to people in disadvantaged countries so that they can start their own businesses. I saw it on a PBS news show like Frontline or something and it looked like a good thing. Last I knew though, they had a 100% payback ratio so far.

Oh. As an anecdotal end to the story of Lester, last I heard he ran some kind of con game with some sixth graders who got mad and threw him over a tall fence, giving him brain damage. It's been years since I heard anything about him but the last I had heard, he never spoke after that.

I'm not sure if this qualifies but a moth ago now I turned in my brand new gaming computer to have it repaired and it caught on fire in the shop. On October 30th he said they would build me a new one, but their shop is still closed and I have no way of getting in touch with them.

Break their thumbs!

Anyway, yes, I have been in a situation where someone owed me money.

At the time, we had been friends for...3 years, I think. I was right out of high school, and he was a year older than me.

He needed $200 to buy some records/misc. DJ equipment; he was trying to start up a DJ business (he actually did perform at a couple of small parties, he just needed more gear) and I said okay.

For a while, he said business was touch and go; not steady.
But he seemed to have more than enough spending cash -- he would go out to dinner with some of his other buddies, he bought toys and gimmicky T-shirts; every once in a while he'd give me a T-shirt that I accepted but was far too tacky for me to ever wear in public.

Eventually, 12-18 months later and after I had kept bugging him for my money (well, I'm gathering your money together but I gotta pay off this other guy first) he said he had it all.

He gave me a check.

That his grandmother wrote.

For $85.

What the hell is this!?!

"Well, uh, you know those T-shirts I got you? They were $15-20 each, so I just went ahead and took it off the money I owed you."

http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/images/smilies/furious.gif

But at the time, I had already been working for quite a while and the money wasn't such a big deal to me anymore.

So, bizarrely, we're still good friends.

Those guys (and girls) get paid *very* well compared to the straight (male) porn stars.

Yes, it would.

Just because they haven't treated me in a professional manner doesn't mean that I'll do the same. I'm a big believer in treating people the way you'd like to be treated.

That said though, the Honor Brigade readers that purchased the books there have taken their business elsewhere. Stiffing me on a few bucks probably cost them around two grand in lost revenue from those readers.

Karma is a sweet thing.

as a rule I don't lend people money over $25.
If I do, then I consider it a onetime gift to help them out... I don't expect it back, but then they don't ever get to ask me for money again.

Why? Because I make a very modest living right now... if I made much more then I wouldn't even think twice about giving 50 or 100 bucks.

Sometimes friends get trapped and need a little boost... I've been helped before and I always repay.

I had a roommate move out in the middle of the night, day before rent was do, and said in the note that it was all my fault for finally putting my foot down recently and making him repay me the prior three months' worth of groceries and utilities that he owed me. That's why he didn't have rent money so it served me right.

I got stiffed a couple other times after that, by other people, but didn't bother to ask for excuses.

I always have this rule...never borrow from friends. Because it could lead to a disastor and ruin the friendship. The most me and my pals will do is pay for our meals if we don't have change when we go out.

Silly I know. Even if I do have slight money issues at times I won't go and borrow from my friends. Because I'm afraid I'll be one of these stories being told.

Now onto something funny. I allowed my cousin to borrow my old Peyton Manning Tennese Volunteers jersey. I never got it back sad to say. Of course he let me borrow the DVD of Waiting and I went ahead and kept it as well for what he owed me on my old football jersey.

Was it wrong ? Well the moment my jersey returns he can get his DVD back. ;)
