It's really all about them.
They are told from an early age being gay is a horrible sin. Deep down they know themselves to be gay and it conflicts with their upbringing. So outwardly they become the flagbearers of the fight against homosexuality because internally they are full of self-loathing and guilt.
They project their internal feelings onto faceless gays because it's easier than facing the truth and going against the conservative crowd.
They need to be true to themselves.

An honest religious conservative might say that homosexuality is a sin.
However, there's something fishy about guys who try to make opposing homosexuality as a main tennet of Christianity or who somehow turn any Biblical discussion of ANY sin into a speech on homosexuality.
Going by a pretty strictly literal view of the Bible in its more accepted translations, homosexuality is wrong. It's not really analogous to eating shellfish as some people claim because of its New Testament reiterations.
But it's not the focus of the religion. I mean, any sex outside of marriage is wrong. Tax evasion is a sin. So is retaliating in a fight. And harboring hate for homosexuals (or anyone else) is a sin on par with murder.
So foaming at the mouth over that one issue and trying to turn the whole religion into that one issue shows a peculiar obsession.

Good cartoon. :D
Somehow I don't think the people it lampoons will get it. Willful ignorance.
Does anybody find it bizzare that some people who often stress high morals really don't belive what their selling?

I don't question whether they believe it.
A person can believe it's wrong to steal and do it all the time.
I bet most people on Death Row feel that killing them in response is wrong too.
These people either believe that their moral code applies to everyone else or, more often I'd imagine, believe that they are guilty of heinous sins and therefore have to compensate by loudly condemning their actions in public screams of subversive self-loathing.
It's not ALWAYS that clergy who opposite homosexuality are necessarily gay but sometimes that self-loathing gay men turn to the clergy as a means of expressing self-hatred.

I also think it's possible that some gays with a very low sense of pride become Republicans because because their politics appeal to them (the old "because I'm in a high tax bracket" line the gay Republican in Doonesbury gave). Then, when they start rising through the ranks, they fear that their party and their voters will drop them like a hot potato when they find out they're gay, and they've tasted the sweet blood of power by now, so they will do anything to distract from the fact that they're homosexuals, including becoming more homophobic in their policies than many straight conservatives.

I see your point. That's some deep seeded self-loathing if you can spread hate like that. Its not just closeted clergy though. I have known people into an out of churches who literally lead two lives: The one the presented on Sundays as the devout Christian, and the other six days where they were the party animals.
Some people swear in their love of Christ, and will sing you song after song, and quotation after quotation. They will chastise ANY soul they feel who have strayed from the righteous path (and most of the time condemn). Pardon the pun, but many do lord their appearance of faith over others.
I have found the most sanctified to be the worst offenders. Somehow, when they are busted, they use the lord as a shield. It turns me off.

The homophobia goes too far. I don't want to be in someone's bedroom, I want to know about their policies. Putting the focus on sex and sexuality is a dangerous game. It backfires all the time, as so many politicians and religious leaders have discovered.

I thought this thread was about Hawkman.
It can't be about Zemo because Helmut is CLEARLY gay.

Wait a second.
Zemo is clearly gay, and yet the barechested guy in the chest harness isn't?
I mean, we know he pings Damon's (from Manhunter) gaydar.

Zemo has a male life partner in Fixer and wears a golden tiara, a fur-trimmed pink (er, “magenta”) and purple costume, and yellow boots. Not only is he gay but he’s gay with lousy taste.
Hawkman just seems to have an S&M fetish and a stalker-like fixation on a barely legal superheroine. Seriously, who would fall for “Have we mated in several past lives?” as a pickup line?

Some people have so much hate for themselves that there's plenty left to spread around.
Gay. Straight. Black. White. Rich. Poor. Christian. Jew. Muslim. Atheist.
I generally tend to believe that people have a great potential for good. And it isn't evil that leads the world astray. It's misdirected self-hatred.
You want to be a Christian, you have to accept grace and strive for a better life.
But the same is true of ANY lifestyle. You have to come to terms with your inadequencies and focus on being better without lashing out at people for their own inadequacies. Offer an open hand and not a fist.
Matthew 7 WEB
1 "Don't judge, so that you won't be judged.
2 For with whatever judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with whatever measure you measure, it will be measured to you.
3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but don't consider the beam that is in your own eye?
4 Or how will you tell your brother,'Let me remove the speck from your eye;' and behold, the beam is in your own eye?
5 You hypocrite! First remove the beam out of your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck out of your brother's eye.
6 "Don't give that which is holy to the dogs, neither throw your pearls before the pigs, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.
7 "Ask, and it will be given you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and it will be opened for you.
8 For everyone who asks receives. He who seeks finds. To him who knocks it will be opened.
9 Or who is there among you, who, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?
10 Or if he asks for a fish, who will give him a serpent?
11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
12 Therefore whatever you desire for men to do to you, you shall also do to them; for this is the law and the prophets.
13 "Enter in by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter in by it.
14 How narrow is the gate, and restricted is the way that leads to life! Few are those who find it.
15 "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravening wolves.
16 By their fruits you will know them. Do you gather grapes from thorns, or figs from thistles?
17 Even so, every good tree produces good fruit; but the corrupt tree produces evil fruit.
This isn't just good advice for Christians although considering who said it, it should go double for them.

Okay. Assume Hawkman were an equally attractive woman...
I have to say that line or one close to it not only would win me over but that lines like it have gone a long way towards winning me over before...

Or...
"The demogog doth protest too much, methinks."
Part of why I'm convinced that Fred Phelps was molested or raped by a man, molested or raped a man or has homosexual leanings himself.
For that man, Christianity isn't about sheep and goats or grace or tradition; it's all about tab A going into slot B.
