Basically Peter reject's his inner spider side and cause of this he remains dead and still cooked up in that coocoon under the bridge. Cause of this the symbiote felt it and wanted to merge with Peter (Peter was the only one it really wanted to bond) and so left Mac Gorgan, stold a secruity guy for a host and went to the bridge to be with peter.

Months on ahead, Peter's will is struggling to resist the symbiote but failed in the end and emerged a twisted looking version of venom. He arives at the Avenger's headquaters wanting Mary Jane to be with him and be like a symbiote but she rejected him and after much resistence he left after he pierced luke cage with a stinger of his and threw wolverine out of the side (Not really a fight and it sucked).

Peter left to find the one true female host he ever loved and so went to dig up Gwen stacy's grave and let her to rejevenate in the spider-webs coccoon (seem's the enhance spidey power's along with the symbiote gave him that ability) after as such a red symbotic like arm burst's out. Deju vu from Ultimate marvel

It was an ok issue, but expected alot more out of it.

That I don't know but I do know there will be more What If? issues coming. Next one I believe is what if wolverine was never caught by shield during the Enemy of the state storyline and continued working for Hydra. That would be pretty cool.

I don't think my local comic store sells this though =( is there going to be more to come? There'll be more issues of the "What If" comic, but there's no gurantee that they'll continue this storyline. But if you like The Other, and anything symbiote related, it's well worth you're money to pick this one up, you'll love it. I think Peter David said in an interview that depending on fan reaction, there might be a chance that there could be a continuation of this story in the 616 universe, or perhaps in another issue of "What If" (don't quote me on that as I'm not sure exactly what he said in that interview).

But yeah, just finished reading this one and I very much enjoyed it, and I loved the ending. I almost hope things play out in a similar fashion in the 616 universe, if / when everybody gets around to addressing the unresolved plotlines from The Other.

I bought this to see if it would help me understand what they were going for in "The Other," but no dice.

I don't look back fondly on "The Other." It was a vague, meandering story that repackaged the Morlun "Mystic Spider" jazz, gave Spidey more powers (To be ignored in supsequent comics) and wasn't worth the fuss IMHO.

I figured maybe there was something I missed to the story, and this "What If?" would make me see a side of it I hadn't. Nope.

Not a bad little yarn, but doesn't add much to The Other.

As for following up on this storyline...yikes! Gwen Stacy already sired a litter of brats from beyond the grave, now they literaly want to dig her mouldy bones up and have her fight peter? Geeze, Marvel, leave the poor woman some peace for corn's sake!

Bleh. Le Garbage.

I liked the OTHER...but this kind of left me with "so what". Much was made of Peter's strength of will, yet he ended up looking like an exact knockoff of Venom, teeth tongue and all.

And what kind of crappy stuff with Gwen...she's just gonna be a puppet, since all Peter is doing is building over dead tissue. Bleh again. Two symbiotic koo koos running the night. I can see it now, a twelve ish series. don't tell me, let me guess...GWENAGE!

Meanwhile, in the real verse, I'm waiting to see the more cosmic aspect of Pete's enhanced powers. Looks like he'll need them with all the borg weirdos being pumped out in CW.

I like the structure a lot. Finally a writer stopped trying to tell stories which have few or nothing to do with the actual event and focused on the differences between the worlds, with The Watcher explaining the main points, has he used to. The story itself was nothing extraordinary, but was cool anyway.

Update: just finished my copy along with cw5. I really like the concept alot...and i thought the design was a good mix of symbiote and peter. I loved how evil he was towards MJ...you dont see that ever so it was a good addition. All i can say is that im gonna pick up the rest of these...can't wait to see what Gwen looks like with a red symbiote =D

All i can say is that im gonna pick up the rest of these...can't wait to see what Gwen looks like with a red symbiote =DWell, chances are you won't actually see what Gwen looks like as there's no guarantee, and a strong likelihood that the story won't be continued. Most "What If" storylines are one issue stand alones, and I'm pretty certain that's what this one is as of right now. Pretty sure next issue is a "What If" featuring Wolverine. As said, I think Peter David said he'd be interested in continuing the story in some form if there was enough fan interest, but that's certainly no guarantee that we'll be getting it. So chances are we aren't gonna be getting a glimpse of the Other-Gwen-Symbiote.

Didn't Peter accept the spider side of himself before he died?

Didn't Peter accept the spider side of himself before he died? No, I don't think so. If you're referring to when he attacked Morlun in the hospital, I believe at that point all that was left was the spider side. I believe there was a caption saying "the man is gone... all that remains is the spider," or something to that effect.

I just checked Wiki. I was thinking about the spider side taking over after he "died".

This What If? sounds odd and, due to that, not to my tastes. From the cover I was actually imagining they'd do a What If? where he was bonded with the symbiote at the start of The Other storyline.

Oh i hadn't realised Cody that this would be a one off man =( i assumed this would play out for atleast a couple more issues...it'll be a real shame if it doesnt imo. I found this on Mark Brooks (The artist who did the cover) Deviantart page:
"I'm really proud of this one because Peter David is the writer of the issue and he didn't know what story to write until he saw my cover. Apparently it inspired him to write, what he calls, the creepiest story he's ever written so I'm very flattered." -

I just gotta say i agree...digging up gwens corpse to make her be a female host for a symbiote and make her his dead girlfriend...man this really is dark =D

I thought this was just an ok story. The "show, don't tell" bit seemed like sort of a cop out. The Gwen aspect of the story worked well with the first love theme introduced at the beginning, but the similarity to the Ultimate continuity is pretty glaring. And not to nitpick, but it seems unlikely that the symbiote would give itself such a human name. I understand that it's become sort of linked to a human mindset because of all these years on Earth with various hosts, but it just seemed a little contrived. I liked it as a one off. In fact I would have liked it if they'd run with this in the 616 books, but we really don't need another alternate Spidey continuity that really won't be doing anything that exciting. With Gwen as Carnage in the Ultimate line, Mac Gargan as Venom in the Thunderbolts, Peter getting back in the black, and the Venom movie coming out next summer, I think the symbiote stuff needs a little bit of a breather.

This is the first time I've seen Uatu refer to the MU as "616". I was very happy with that.

I liked the story. I'd be interrested in seeing it continued. Poison looked really cool.

the only thing missing was a dying scream from peter just as he is helplessly taken by the symbiote. that would have clenched the deal for me.

hey, i just thought of something. at the end of the "the other" storyline, there was some kind of creature in stasis. the creature claimed that it was allowed to enter the world if peter parker was allowed to enter too. could that creature be poison? i know it's a long shot, but...

Woohoo. Symbiotes, Uatu and realtionships disturbingly close to being of a necrophiliac nature. What's not to love?

This was a great book. I love the dark side that it showed. With this attitude I guess it's all out justice Punisher style. But It's a great read with a different look and I hope they finish the story....

Whoa! This is one of the best !What If?"s I've ever read. This was a cool and dark story. Six months; that's a long time. I'd given up at that point too. Poison looked really cool too and what a way to end it. I hope they do let Peter David do a continuation of this story next year.
