I almost posted this in the homosexuality thread as it serves of an example of the mentality that Joe Rice beautifully spoke against, and the stereotype that is too often associated with Christians. I disagree with the stereotype and feel these women are not as representative of the religious as people think.

Two women, one about 50, another at least 70, behind me talked through all of mass. When the priest was talking, during singing, constantly. Forget that their should be some sense of reverence and solemnity. It would be equally annoying in a movie theatre or classroom. But I was in church, and I know better than to be judgmental, so I ignored them and enjoyed the service.

Then a cell phone rang across the room, and the complained to each other about how annoying and disrespectful this was. The hypocrisy amused me.

Then someone laughed louder than most at a joke the priest made. They complained about how loud that person laughed and how it was annoying.

They complained about how disruptive crying babies were.

I know I'm being judgmental myself here, and what they do and think is between them and God, but they could conceivably stand to turn their criticism inwards a little.

It was annoying, and the way I was viewing them reminded me of how I sometimes feel a lot of anti-religious folks view all religious types.

But basically this post was to vent at them (should it be in the out-of-context angry rant thread; if so, sorry, but I'm not that angry)

(So there's no confusion, anyone is free to respond, even if they just want to tell me I'm stupid for going to mass in the first place)

Well, I think your reaction to them is quite understandable. It is annoying to see people lacking respect to others, no matter what the circumstances are.

As for these ladies' criticizing cell phones and crying babies, it fits right under the "And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?" section. Whch applies to believers and nonbelievers alike, I would add.

They must have been those two famous old ladies.

"The food here is awful!"

"Yes, and such small portions!"

Personally, I think in such situations you have every right to politely ask them to be a little quit since you're trying to concentrate. That's not being judgemental, that's being assertive.

I suppose turning around to them and asking, in the loudest voice possible, if it were at all possible for either of the hypocritical old bints to shut their big, fat fucking yaps at any point in the near future would be a little too much in a house of God?

Whereas a subtle yet stern approach would be more effective.

I did that before!

I was at a Church memorial service and one young lady stood up to talk about her friend she lost to "anorexia". As she was speaking and reading journal entries from the deceased, this "goth" girl was sitting behind me saying, "Yeah, right", "Bullshit", "How stupid. Get over it" in stage whispers.

I, an adult, leaned back, smiled at her and whispered in her ear, "Why don't you do us a little favor and shut your fucking mouth? Thanks."

No more was heard except when I saw her outdoors later she said I was a hypocrite for cussing in "God's house".

Most older women have predictable patterns when it comes to church, both location and mass time. I would check to see if they do exhibit similar patterns and then, if so, buy and use one of these:
