Yeah, I hate holiday shipping delays. Make sure they don't try to fuck you on the extra freight time.

("Pullmann, party of one, your flaming pit is ready...")

Nah, shipping char- er, the escort fee is a flat rate. The foster parents are paid out of our agency fee. We're going to send her a couple of gifts for her first Christmas because we won't be there to share it with her. Not that it'll matter much; it's not like a 6-month-old is going to remember anything.

While I'm at it, I would like to present my rules for determining what units a person's age is measure in. How do you know which unit to use? How long do you use minutes? I developed a formula. It works like this. The initial unit is minutes, and you measure in one unit until the child is two of the next higher unit in age. In other words, it's minutes until the child is two hours old, hours until you reach two days, days until you reach two weeks, weeks until you reach two months, and months until you reach two years. You can fudge a little bit with almost and will be, but that's how it usually works.

I call it the rule of 2. Which isn't related to the rule of 2 in natural science, which says it's reasonable to assume that anything that is only known to have occurred once may have occurred exactly once and be a unique event, but once you have a second incident, it's no longer reasonable to assume that there are exactly two because you've established a pattern. The best example of this is intelligent life. We know of one planet that has developed intelligent life, so the unique event theory is viable; the discovery of a second would imply that there were more that are unknown to us.

I am such a nerd that I find stuff like this entertaining.

Oh, and thank you all. I have my fingers crossed that the last little bit goes well.

Congratulations, btw.

If you're talking about a baby, you need to know whether to call her, in the case of my daughter, five months old or 21 weeks. The correct answer, of course, is five months, because once you pass the two mark for a unit, that becomes the preferred unit. This is why a child is as likely to be called 18 months as a year and a half.

In science it helps for establishing patterns. Once might be a fluke, but two tells you to look for more.

It depends on how much damage you need to do in order to gain entrance. If you just need to swipe a plastic card through to bypass the lock, then go for it. If you need a hammer or crowbar, well, it's probably not a good idea.

I get the science part. The baby thing, I don't. Must be an aesthetic.

It's something I came up with in college after hearing a comedian make a joke about reporting a child's age in months rather than years, and doing a routine about being x months old or y days and so forth. So I started paying attention, and noticed the units used were minutes for newborns, hours, days, sometimes weeks, months, and years. I developed the rule of 2 to explain it.

You measure age in a unit until you reach two of the next larger unit. In other words, you use minutes, rounded to the nearest ten until you reach two hours, the next higher unit. You then use hours until you reach two of the next higher unit, days. Days gets promoted to weeks, then months, the years at two years old. We never need anything larger because years make for the best discrete units for measuring age.

It even works in theory for decades. Single year differences are significant early on, but become less so with age. The difference between two and three is huge; between 21 and 22 negligible. There are significant differences between 20 and 30 and so forth up to about 6O or 70, beyond which differences start to diminish again.

I also developed a theory of how to describe broad age categories--there are four broad categories, each divided into roughly 20 year spans. Childhood, young adulthood, middle adult, elderly, getting us to roughly the end of human life expectancy. Because childhood is a time of much greater change, I subdivided that one in to four categories, baby, early childhood (little kid), childhood (big kid) and adolescence, producing seven broad stages.

I'm into language and words and stuff. I like to define things and dig the way people talk apart and try to figure out how it works. I was a strange kid.

Just found this on IMDB.

Loken and Rodriguez in Lesbian Relationship?
Terminator 3 star Kristanna Loken has given her biggest hint yet she is dating Lost actress Michelle Rodriguez. Loken was recently interviewed by gay publication The Advocate, where she was asked about stories linking her with her sexy co-star on the set of BloodRayne. When asked about rumours that the two hooked up during the shoot, Loken laughed and took a deep breath before replying, "There is the $64,000 question. Um...I don't even know how to answer that." She was then asked if the two had fun partying together, Loken replied, "Uh-huh," while smiling slyly. When the interviewer said her silence "said volumes," the actress replied, "Just don't look upstairs, OK?" The couple have been frequently photographed together with their arms around each other in Los Angeles.

This year's appears to be 'moving the goalposts'.
'Straw man' was a big one a couple of months ago, and keeps going strong.
And we went through a round of 'realpolitik' about a year ago.

We have one on a hose now. When we buy a place I want a two-headed one.

Speaking of buying, the Multiple Listing site has a house for $209,900 that proports to not be a knock-down (in my area, they have knock-downs for 270k. It's insane!). It says "needs some work" but honestly, that's in our budget, so if it's not something on the level of "needs all plumbing replaced", then we may look into it further.

Yes, I know we just moved. What can I say, we have the wanderlust.

I'm looking over my bills (And cussing for not realizing I'd gone over minutes last cycle, watching veeeery carefully this one) and I'm finding most the calls are to or from Tadhg, my folks, and my best friend. I'm currently on the Get More 600 minutes (free nights and weekends) plan for $39.99/month, plus the $5 text message add on. They have a unlimited calls to 5 Favorite thing with 300 additional minutes + free nights and weekends for the same price, and if I go through Amazon I can get a free RAZR phone or Nokia 6103.. I've been wanting bluetooth capabilities (for a headset) and camera phone thing for a while now. If I order it through TMobile's website I could get the dragon tattoo design RAZR, but it'd be $60 and I can just get faceplates for cheaper.

The Get More plan I'm on is past contract, so there's not a severance fee, I don't think. It's under my father in law's name. Just looks like I'd have the $35 line start fee and the minor hassel of changing my phone number.

And it's not with rebates, though there is apparently a rebate on the RAZR that would then give me $74.99. They're $0.01 with contract, which is what I'm looking to do so it's all nice and under my name and saves me $200 on a phone...

I guess my big issue with it is that up until 5 years ago I drank Oklahoma river water. I led a very My Side Of The Mountain style life before moving here.

RAZRs suck though. Nokia's are okay. Personally I love Sonys.

The 209k house is 4 houses outside the Shabbat boundry.

Darn.

If we bought it, we would not be able to carry any objects outside of the house on the Sabbath.

I grew up that way, but Suzannah'd hate it.

The only downside is you have to have a specific phone to use MyFaves.. why do you think the RAZR sucks? That's actually the one I'm most strongly leaning toward at the moment.

Oh, PS3... :(

I can't wait for the price reduction. Or an interesting game.

Heh, it's schadenfreude for me, because I'm a little bit more of a Nintendo and Microsoft fan than I am of Sony. That's not to say I hate Sony or the Playstation brand (My PS2 gets love from Xenosaga and FFX-2 fairly often)... I'm just not fond of their PR. 'Giant enemy crab', anyone?

(Yeah, the Wii lacks horsepower, but dang am I ever hot for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Day of Disaster.)

But hey, if one wants a PS3, I say go for it. Just don't spend more than you have to (http://www.joystiq.com/2006/11/17/100-million-for-a-ps3-what-a-bargain/).

If cell phones are illegal, only criminals will have cell phones. And since criminals are idiots (I base this on nothing more than a need to move the argument along), that means only idiots will have cell phones. Therefore, more cell phone legislation would lead to more annoying walkie-talkies, at least as a proportion of overall population.

It's funny, I went to Borat opening night specifically because I figured it would be SANS idiots, because none of them would know about it. :)

The idiots are the ones who go to opening night of a film not because they really want to see the film, but because it's the "thing to do."

So films that build with word of mouth are always good to go to opening night.

"Office Space," for instance, had about five people in the theater on opening night!

On the bright side, it doesn't appear that the cancer has spread (but we're still waiting for some further test results). The downside is that the kind of cancer he has never actually "goes away." If they think chemotherapy is the best way to go, we'll have to take him to see a veterinary cardiologist, as they think they heard a heart murmer--but that could also be from the very high stress level he had at the time, what with the Hannibal Lecter mask he had to wear and all. So, as of right now, it looks like it'll be a course of chemotherapy, chemotherapy and steroids, or just steroids. I'm voting for the last two options, as the steroids would also likely help his arthritis.

"The Carl Barks Library" collected pretty much everything, but it's out of print.

Recently, Gemstone's released two volumes of "Carl Barks' Greatest Ducktales Stories," featuring stories that were later adapted into episodes of the cartoon. Those are pretty darn good.

Hi, I'm Ray Rivard and I'm a Carl Barks geek.

"HI, RAY."

There are a couple of ways to do this. There's the completist, and probably most expensive way, or there's the pick the best stories when available route.

I assume you're going with the latter.

If so, you might want to create a "Carl Barks" search on eBay using the search function in the "Collectibles" category.

As was mentioned by Michael, there is a complete ten slipcase volume set of ALL of Carl Barks' works, from Donald Duck to Uncle Scrooge to Walt Disney's Comics & Stories. These were published by Another Rainbow in the mid- to late eighties. You can usually pick up Volume I or Volume III, which cover the early Donald Duck one-shots and Uncle Scrooge's first thirty issues for anywhere between $75 and $125. Other volumes go up in price from there, with Volume V, VI, IX, and X, often hitting the $350 mark. I was lucky to buy the whole ten slipcase volume set for $100 each.

But that's, again, the completist approach.

There are various compilations, including Abbeville Press' oversized books, and in particular Gladstone and Another Rainbow's compilation sets.

Gladstone reprinted quite a few of the classic Duck stories, both as comics and as oversized squarebound sets containing two or three stories an issue. Again, as I mentioned in the other thread, you might want to concentrate on the Duck One-Shots from the Dell Four Color Series and the Uncle Scrooge series. Gemstone reprints the occasional Barks story, as well as Don Rosa stories (he's the inheritor of the Duck crown from Barks), but they tend to concentrate more on new material, and their comics go for $6.95 a pop on average.

Use eBay. There's a ton of stuff out there. Let me know if you want a list of the best issues. I know there's a thread or two in "Classics" about it.

Good luck.

It shouldn't, really. Just whatever it costs for the extra piping. Maybe plumbers don't know how tall the average person is? Bugs the hell outta me though.

Standard height for a shower head connection is currently an even 6 feet. For much of the 20th century it was a bit lower, 68-70", so if the building was built awhile back, it may have been built to those standards. When you take into account that the typical shower head hangs down a few inches, you're most likely going to find most older shower heads at about 66".

The idea was to put it at a nice median height where the shower head is high enough to cover the body for most men, but low enough to be easily adjustable for most women. In other words, it's a compromise to make it usable and adjustable for people anywhere from 5 to 6 feet.

When we had our home built, we had the main shower head connection put in at 68", with a separate shower head directly above and a bar at body level. 68" works well when the tallest person in your home is 65" tall.

The guest room is at 6 feet, with the adjustable height shower head, and the kid's bathroom is at 66", but the fixture is easily adjusted down or up about 6-8".

Y'know, I'm seriously considering getting a new TMobile contract under my own name..

Hmmmm.

Huh. I use 37 minutes on my cell last billing period. I can't imagine using 600. Not that it matters, because we don't pay (it's a perk from Emily's job--a paid family plan with up to 2000 shared minutes); I just can't imagine talking on the phone that much away from home. Then again, I don't like the phone, so that might have an impact on things.

Whats become kind of funny to me is the amount of kids these days that are getting cavities because their mommies insist on them drinking bottled water instead of tap water and the bottled water has no fluoride in it.

Yes, but what they obviously don't realize is that public water supply treatment plants don't remove the environmental estrogenic compounds and this is going to turn your kids gay. Well, just the boys.
