Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Reflected in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you
Think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
Once the world was new
Our bodies felt the morning dew
That greets the brand new day
We couldn't tear ourselves away
I wonder if you care
I wonder if you still remember
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
And when the music plays
And when the words are
Touched with sorrow
When the music plays
I hear the sound
I had to follow
Once upon a time
Once beneath the stars
The universe was ours
Love was all we knew
And all I knew was you
I wonder if you know
I wonder if you think about it
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
And when the music plays
And when the words are
Touched with sorrow
When the music plays
And when the music plays
I hear the sound
I had to follow
Once upon a time
Once upon a time
Once when you were mine
I remember skies
Mirrored in your eyes
I wonder where you are
I wonder if you
Think about me
Once upon a time
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams
In your wildest dreams

It's scary as hell when you've had a long day and round the last flight of stairs to see a German Shepherd running at you, though. (But it's so much cooler than going to your parent's house.)
And I'm up to 3!
It's just one of those days.

Yeah, that's pretty much my reaction. They also have shit like GHOST on DVD. Who on earth would want to watch that at this point in time?
The VHS collection - still by far larger than the DVD collection - is almost as bad in its own way. Mostly collections of ancient PBS series and the sort of boring documentary shows they show at odd hours on the History Channel.

I wish I was, but sadly, no, I'm not kidding. The DVD and VHS collections look like they decided to get the most things they could with the smallest amount of money, and with no thought whatsoever given to actual quality or interest. I doubt anyone has rented out any of those tapes of I, CLAUDIUS in over a decade.

Seagal reminds me of a cross between John Wayne and Billy Jack.
Though I will say that I enjoy some of his early movies (up to & including Under Siege).
My aikido class got together and rented out a theatre when Fire Down Below was first released....and made shameless fun of it.
Kind of our own, personal, MST3K episode.

If their system is anything like ours, the majority of feature films (not classics) are from donations; so Ghost and the like are in the collection. Up until 10 years ago the lion's share of our collection was PBS, Masterpiece Theatre, and documentaries. The shift occurred after we got money. Now we have the HBO and Showtime series, BBC series, and a far better selection of non-fiction and documentaries than the "Meet the Author" VHS that clog the shelves at Central.

The cat finished her four days of food some time ahead of schedule. I think it will be at least four more days before she forgives me.

Ashy & Grand.
I'm going to a party tonight (probably pretty soon, its already 10 wowza). But a lot of the folks there will be co-workers. Just about all of my co-workers are pretty kickass, but just being in an environment where I feel I can be the "real" me around co-workers who aren't co-workers but "real" people, will be interesting.
I've already had three beers. I'm wondering if I should just keep drinking and forget the party thing....it should be a good party (as I said, most of the folks I work with are pretty hip and dig a good party), but I don't know if I'd be comfortable in that kind of environment. I know, lame. But hmm. Maybe I should just get high and go.

So, apparently I have no ability to read people whatsoever.
Emily told me that her brothers think I'm cool. These are the same kids who whined at me every time they talked to me, mostly about not having anything to do, called me "dude" repeatedly despite my asking them not to do that every time they did it, laughing at their rudeness the more often it happened, who seemed unable to fix themselves something to eat which they seemed to need some six to eight times a day, and generally seemed to make it their duty to come find me and bug me four or five times a day. Usually while calling me "Dude", fighting with each other, whining about having nothing to do and asking what there was to eat.
So either I'm terrible at reading their attitude, Em is bad at reading them, or they were lying to her for some reason. I have to assume Em is better at this than I am, so that leaves my not understing things well or them pulling an Eddie Haskell on Emily.
Whatever it is, it should be at least three more years before we get Thanksgiving again, so this will likely be the last time I have to deal with this. They'll have to be better behaved at 17 and 18 than at 14 and 15, right?

This is a rant.
Man I am getting to hate where I live. Tonight I hit one of the local bars and a few Latinos came in. They were the talk of the bar. They got the treat of racism in many ways.
1.) they had a few locals make fun of their citizenship
2.) the bartender called down her big boyfriend because she was nervous
3.) Jokes about the Mexican language ran all nite long.
4.) In general no one talked the group without an attitude.
I just hate the intolerance of my area. They where judged by race not action. It just sickens me. You would think I would be use to it my now.

So, in other words, they behaved like typical teen-aged boys. Yeah, if they didn't like you at all, they'd probably just ignore you and give each other "the look" (the eye-rolling "how could anyone be so stupid" look) every time you said something. The fact that they were whining about having nothing to do to you, kind of indicates that they thought you might actually know of something cool they might like to do.

They are from Southern California and are not, so far as I know, stoners. Regardless of the intent, I think it would have been more polite for them to stop calling me "dude" after I told them I'd prefer they didn't call me that and used my name instead. I'm not sure it counts as a term of endearment if the person being addressed doesn't like the term being used and has said so.
Heh, given the next paragraph, I kinda concur.
Yeah, I doubt it comes as a surprise to anyone :).

Emily said they'd come to her a couple of times and her response had been something like "And how, exactly, did this become my problem?" She said they kept coming to me because I was paying attention to them and taking their concerns seriously.
We TOLD ya to take 'em out to the hoop!

11-26-2006, 07:09 AM
Question, Gilda. Do the boys know about your gender situation? If so do you think the "dude" was a "shot"? Or could it have been one of those male bonding things we talked about in the opposite sex question thread? Frankly, coming from my generation, I have no idea about how today's teens might react to you. The very concept would have scared us a little in real life, but for all I know, today's kids might only be "so, like do we treat her like a guy or a girl? Or can we do both?"
And part of the cool just might BE that you didn't just blow them off like Emily, but treated them as people. Whiny people, but people just the same.
But I was more than a little kidding. Teen-agers are hard to read for anyone, because their hormones make them totally unpredictable. Manic and joyful one second, angry and belligerent the next and sullen and mopey by the next tick.

Morna and I sat near a young couple who were dining with what appeared to be one of their grandmothers in a restaurant a couple of nights ago and I heard the guy call her "dude" a couple of times. He had a very surfer dude manner of talking all around and it struck me as disrespectful to the elderly woman that he didn't modify his speech patterns when spoke with her.

Well they are from SoCal, but if you told them to stop calling you that, and they didn't, that sucks.

They definitely don't have to be stoners to use the word. And it's definitely usually complimentary when used with non-peers, particularly women. Because they're saying they're seeing you as a near-peer instead of those other roles. (Not everyone finds that appealing, of course, and you may be one of those "I'd rather be respected than liked" folks like some of my relations, but the point here is their intent.)
Meyers and Paradox have pretty much nailed it. I will just add that with many teenagers, manners and respect have nothing to do with their opinion of people. Not least because of the wide range of informality out there these days. And they're still asserting their independence. So yeah, impersonal rebellion rather than any sort of dislike.

Gus's grandfather knows the guy who came up with the software, and I think he said some of the family ended up investing. He was telling us about it at breakfast yesterday.
Two of Gus's cousins -- brother and sister -- tried it independently but at about the same time and got matched with each other.

Everyone was very hospitable. I'm pretty much from a different planet, but it's not like they haven't seen that before. And actually, the spouse of the only grandchild to marry so far has even less in common with them than I do.
They do think Gus has a grander destiny ahead of him than North Dakota, though. Go figure.

Question, Gilda. Do the boys know about your gender situation? If so do you think the "dude" was a "shot"?
Yeah, they know; the whole family does. It's difficult for me not to interpret that as a shot from someone who knows better, especially when they know how much I dislike it.
(Not everyone finds that appealing, of course, and you may be one of those "I'd rather be respected than liked" folks like some of my relations, but the point here is their intent.)
Yeah, I definitely don't want to be thought of as a peer or near-peer to a 15-year-old-boy, but I don't see being liked and being respected as something that should be a choice. I'd prefer both, but in the long term respect is more important to me. I would have thought that pretty common.
I've spent the last decade making sure I don't get treated like one of the guys and I don't plan to start undoing that now.

I went home for Thanksgiving; have mixed feelings about the trip
pros:
Grandma made pumpkin pie
egg nog from Mitchell's
saw friends and family
talked with old college teachers
sale at local comic store; filled in back issues
cons:
lost important textbook
too many dogs whine too often
visits with friends too crammed in to the point where they seem perfunctory (when are we both free? 1 am. Fine. Grab some beers and catch up on life. How about you. Lunch Friday during your break from work. Next.)
Trip back(details below*)
I don't actually like turkey all that much
*On freeway my gas pedal stopped working completely for a brief time; it seeemed to correct itself and I continue undeterred; while stopped at McDonalds about midway between San Francisco and Santa Barbara, my car refused to start; I was about to call AAA when it finally started; I decided to just drive straight home without stopping, quite concerned about whether my gas would last.

The sloppy joes in the cafeteria here have a much more bbq-y taste than what I grew up with back west, so the recipes could vary by region.
Also, they're the standard thing they sell at fundraiser outdoor cookouts or any other sort of community picnic here. Instead of hamburgers/hotdogs. Which seems really really weird. Safer, I guess. But weird!

Kinky - old siamese with issues; again, Mom named this one. Lived to be 14.
Tucker - my first named cat. 26lbs, lived to be 12 (obesity and cats, not a good thing), he was such a Buddha kitty.
Murphy - my little one, lived to be 15.
Precious - named by my husband's ex-girlfriend (long before we were married), lived 15 years. Aggressive minx, think LoTR.

I've never had this problem with my students, though little ones do tend to be quite a bit more respectful towards adults than teens. It's a big part of the reason I don't teach high school.Well, context is important too. To your students, you're an authority figure, taking the place of their parents for most of the day. Especially with the first couple grades, you're the lady who has all the answers and knows everything.
There's a big difference between that and your wife's brothers. You aren't their parent or taking the symbolic place of their parents. You are presented, to some extent and whether you like it or not, as a peer by way of your their sister's relationship with you. Your relationship with her and their relationship with her links the three of you. They're acknowledging that link.
I suppose you could press the issue and cause bad blood and create problems and drama in the future, or you could take this for what it is: Teenage boys accepting you as a member of their family and using a term of some endearment to relate to you in a more affectionate way. This is a good thing.

I don't mean to single anybody out with this, but I just noticed I have a tendency to dislike posters who use the Joker as their avatar. It's almost a kneejerk reaction now. I can remember at least one Joker-avatar-using poster who was banned, but aside from that I'm not sure if it's just me.
I'm pretty sure it's not the avatar.

Doin' well, thanks. Just got back tonight from a party weekend for a friend of mine.
Exafuckinlent.
I wish I could say the same, but I totally dorked up last night. I was planning on:
1.) Hitting up a buddies house to play some buzzed Halo with a group of about 12 people, then taking off before it got too geeklame to...
2.) Bar downtown where some (from what I've heard) kickass flamenco band was playing for a couple hours, then...
3.) Arrive at a friends party and finish off the night with more alcohol, Other Substances and sexual energyies and sleep off the after-effects Sunday morning before heading into work.
But what happened? I drank too much at #1, realized I couldn't drive, and then when I got sober enough to where I could ended up just heading home and crashing.
LAME.
But, hey, there's always next weekend.
But, I'm glad you, at least, had a kickass weekend.

You shoulda left the car home and skipped the Halo altogether.

You shoulda left the car home and skipped the Halo altogether.
I know, I really should have, but I hadn't seen the Halo-friend in weeks, and I felt bad, so I had to stop by. And who can say no to a friends offered brewskies. Then the chant, of "just one more game!" as I proclaim my need to take off.
It just happened. Looking back, I should have just skipped it and hooked up with the dude this week sometime. But I wasn't thinking about that then, I was just wanting to enjoy my weekend, but I ended up enjoying it took quick.
What made it worse is when I finally got home, I got a drunken voicemail from the friends at the kewl party asking me to be there and stuff which made it extra worse.
But, there's always forever. Like I said, I'll make up for it.
But, anyway. Sunday night, tomorrow is Monday, ugh. But its just a day. No biggie. It is possible to inject Good Times into Mondays, despite its reputation.

Well I go the call this morning I have a 3rd interview now at the exchange, this time to meet the CTO and get a final say-so from him.

Third day in a row with no paper. Third day I called to have them re-deliver (which of course, they don't). Finally spoke to a customer service rep, got the usual promise "the carrier and route manager are being notified and you will receive your paper shortly". BULLSHIT. I live on the main road, I have a newspaper tube with the paper's name on it, and I've been getting this paper for five years. Every frickin' time the regular carrier goes on vacation/is sick/quits, this shit happens and do they credit my account? no.
